Build steps
- 1
Confirm installation location and cat traffic flow
≈ 15 minDecide the installation location for the freestanding cat tower (600×600×1600mm). Ideal spot is by a window or along a wall where the cat can easily jump onto it. Choose a location where the tower can be secured to the wall to prevent tipping.
MeasureW 600 mmMeasureSTEP 1 / 11Tip
- Keep at least 300mm distance from the ceiling to prevent the cat from pushing and climbing onto it.
- Installing by a window is preferred as a sunbathing and viewing spot for cats.
- For multiple cats, choose a height of 1600mm+ to provide escape routes.
Watch out
- Avoid placing directly under air conditioners to prevent cats from disliking direct drafts.
- Avoid structures where high places are inaccessible to cats; ensure base boards are arranged stepwise.
- 2
Cut and prepare materials
≈ 25 minCut Lauan plywood 15mm thick into five base boards (15×600×600mm). Prepare two hemp rope-wrapped poles φ90×1600mm and two 2×4 lumber (38×89×1600mm) as posts. Prepare 4.8m of φ8mm hemp rope, 40 pieces of 50mm coarse-thread screws, and four pieces of boa material carpet (600×600mm).
CutUse the in-store cut serviceCutSTEP 2 / 11Tip
- Lauan plywood 15mm balances strength and lightness well. 12mm thickness can't support the weight.
- It's quicker to buy premade hemp rope-wrapped poles, available at DIY stores.
- Thin carpets are easier to adhere; thick carpets make it harder for cats to scratch.
Watch out
- Using thin plywood may crack under the impact of cats jumping.
- Posts made of soft material are unstable; choose hardwood cores wrapped with hemp rope.
- 3
Sand all parts
≈ 25 minSand Lauan plywood and 2×4 lumber using #120 then #240 grit. Since cats may lick or scratch, no splinters are allowed. Pay special attention to chamfering edges carefully.
Sand#120SandSTEP 3 / 11Tip
- Make all cat-contact surfaces smooth; verify by running your fingertip over them.
- Plywood edges (end grain) are rougher than face sides; sand these areas thoroughly.
- Perform sanding in an indoor or well-ventilated area to avoid dust accumulation.
Watch out
- A single splinter can injure cat's tongue or paw pads.
- Dust sticking to carpet is hard to remove; separate work areas accordingly.
- 4
Mark post positions on base boards
≈ 20 minMark with pencil the attachment positions for posts on four base boards. On base board 1 (bottom), arrange two posts in a square shape. On base boards 2 to 4, position them at different heights (e.g., 300mm, 600mm, 900mm). Slightly offset from the center line left or right for better cat walking balance.
Mark a lineUse a try squareMarkSTEP 4 / 11Tip
- If the base board's center of gravity is uneven, it may tip; a square base with four posts is basic.
- Staggering the base boards by height like stairs makes it easier for cats to climb.
- Use a punch to clarify hole centers for easier drilling.
Watch out
- Placing post positions too close to board edges causes splitting when screwing.
- Uneven post positions on all boards cause distortion; transfer marks accurately by stacking.
- 5
Drill pilot holes in base boards and posts
≈ 20 minDrill φ5mm pilot holes in base boards and 2×4 lumber posts. For base boards, use a countersink bit to recess screw heads flush with the surface. For hemp rope-wrapped poles, use the metal bracket included with the product for screw fixing.
Drill a holeφ5mmDrillSTEP 5 / 11Tip
- Countersinking creates a clean finish and prevents cats from catching claws on screw heads.
- Use a drill stopper to control hole depth to avoid through holes.
- Keep pilot holes in 2×4 lumber at least 20mm from edges to prevent splitting.
Watch out
- Without pilot holes, 50mm screws can split 2×4 lumber.
- If countersinking is too deep, screws may not hold firmly.
- 6
Assemble bottom board and posts
≈ 30 minStand two posts (hemp rope-wrapped pole and 2×4 lumber) vertically on the bottom board (450×450). Drive three 50mm coarse-thread screws into each post (6 screws total) from the back of the base board. Confirm with a square and level that posts are vertical. Use more screws here since this supports the most weight.
Build the frameTighten joints firmlyAssembleSTEP 6 / 11Tip
- Verify post verticality in two directions (front and side) using a level; aim for zero tilt.
- Apply wood glue at joints for added rigidity when screwing.
- The underside of the base board is hidden, so increasing screw count is fine.
Watch out
- Any tilt in posts causes upper boards to be uneven and unstable for cats.
- Too few screws cause posts to wobble under cat movement.
- 7
Attach mid and upper boards to posts
≈ 30 minAttach mid-level boards (300–900mm heights) horizontally to posts. From board undersides, drill φ5mm pilot holes and drive 50mm coarse-thread screws into posts (6 screws per board; 2 posts × 3 screws each). Ensure boards are level with level tool. Secure tightly to withstand cat jumping impact.
Build the frameTighten joints firmlyAssembleSTEP 7 / 11Tip
- If boards are not level, cats feel discomfort.
- Screw placement should be on post centerline to prevent splitting.
- For balance, consider making upper boards smaller.
Watch out
- Screwing impact can tilt lower boards; check all levels after all 3 boards installed.
- Insufficient screws risk falls; consider 10kg cat plus dynamic loads.
- 8
Wrap hemp rope (scratch post function)
≈ 30 minIf not using premade hemp rope-wrapped poles, tightly wrap φ8mm hemp rope (4.8m) around 2×4 lumber posts from bottom to top. Secure both ends with a staple gun or screws. Keep wraps tight and close with no gaps.
Build the frameTighten joints firmlyAssembleSTEP 8 / 11Tip
- Start by drilling a hole in the post, anchoring the rope end with wood glue inside the hole to prevent loosening.
- Fix rope periodically with staples while wrapping to maintain tightness.
- Hide end by threading into the last hole for neat finish.
Watch out
- Loose rope unravels from cat pulling; wrap tightly and fix often.
- Avoid synthetic ropes; cats may chew and ingest harmful fibers.
- 9
Attach boa material carpet
≈ 25 minAttach carpet pieces on top surfaces of three boards (top, middle and base) using double-sided tape or wood glue. Cut corners with a utility knife to match base board shape. Adhesion should be strong enough to resist cats scratching and pulling.
Fix to the wallAnchor to studsInstallSTEP 9 / 11Tip
- Use strong double-sided tape; normal tape peels off under cat claws.
- Align carpet nap direction for better appearance.
- Leave slight excess at edges, folding under to prevent lifting.
Watch out
- Weak adhesion causes carpets to peel off and risk ingestion
- Avoid carpets with latex backing that crumbles into powder.
- 10
Install anti-tip to wall
≈ 20 minFix the top part of the tower to the wall with L-brackets and anti-seismic belts to prevent tipping. Confirm wall stud locations with stud finder before installation to secure into framing.
Fix to the wallAnchor to studsInstallSTEP 10 / 11Tip
- Wall fastening is essential for safety; a 1200mm high tower can easily tip when cats jump.
- Anti-seismic belts are available at 100-yen shops, but specialized ones (~1000 yen) at hardware stores offer more reliability.
- Do not rely on drywall alone; always anchor to studs.
Watch out
- Skipping wall fastening risks tower collapse in earthquakes, potentially injuring cats.
- Confirm bracket load capacity to support total tower weight plus cat and seismic forces.
- 11
Final check and introduce cat
≈ 15 minCheck all screws are tight, carpets adhered, and posts steady. Place tower at installation site and verify level horizontally. If wobbling occurs, adjust by adding felt pads under feet. Before letting cats onto it, strongly shake to verify stability.
Done!Done — nice work!DoneSTEP 11 / 11Tip
- Place treats on base boards initially to encourage cats to approach without fear.
- Do not force cats onto tower on first day; let them explore naturally.
- Placing other furniture nearby to create 'stairs' helps cats climb up gradually.
Watch out
- Neglecting final checks risks cat injury due to assembly defects.
- If cats avoid the tower, consider poor location or unsuitable scent; observe for some time.
Warnings
- ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
- ⚠️Tighten all joints securely to withstand the cat's weight.
