Confirm Installation Location and Cat's Pathway
≈ 15 minDecide the installation location for the suspension bridge style catwalk (900×200×100mm). Ideally near a window or along a wall where the cat can easily jump on. Choose a place where it can be fixed to the wall to prevent tipping.
MeasureW 900 mmMeasureSTEP 1 / 11Tip
- Leave at least 300mm clearance from the ceiling to prevent cats from pushing up and climbing the ceiling.
- Installing near a window is preferred as it provides a sunny spot and a view outside.
- If you have multiple cats, create escape routes by increasing the height by 100mm or more.
Watch out
- Avoid installing directly under an air conditioner to prevent cats from disliking the direct airflow.
- Avoid structures where cats climb high but cannot get down; stepwise arranged platform boards prevent this.
- 2
Cut and Prepare Components
≈ 25 minCut one platform board (15×200×900mm) from 15mm thick Lauan plywood. Prepare one hemp rope wrapped pole (φ90×100mm), one 2x4 lumber (38×89×100mm), 1m of 8mm hemp rope, forty 50mm coarse-thread screws, and one carpet (fleece material) (200×900mm).
CutUse the in-store cut serviceCutSTEP 2 / 11Tip
- 15mm Lauan plywood balances strength and lightness well; 12mm may not support the weight.
- Purchasing a ready-made hemp rope wrapped pole is faster and available at hardware stores.
- Thin carpets are easier to attach; very thick ones make it harder for cats’ claws to catch.
Watch out
- Using thin plywood may crack under the impact of cats jumping on.
- Poles made of soft material are unstable; even if wrapped with hemp rope, choose one with a hardwood core.
- 3
Sand All Components
≈ 25 minSand the Lauan plywood and 2x4 lumber in order from #120 to #240 grit. There must not be any splinters, as cats lick and scratch them. Pay close attention to chamfering the corners carefully.
Sand#120SandSTEP 3 / 11Tip
- Make all cat-contact areas smooth; check by stroking with your fingertip.
- The plywood edge (end grain) is rougher than the face; focus sanding here.
- Perform sanding indoors or in a ventilated area to control dust.
Watch out
- Even a single splinter can injure the cat’s tongue or paw pads.
- Dust sticking to carpet is hard to remove; separate sanding area from carpet application area.
- 4
Mark Support Post Positions on Platform Boards
≈ 20 minMark the attachment positions of support posts on all four platform boards using a pencil. Arrange two posts in a square on platform board 1 (base board). For boards 2 to 4, arrange them at different heights (e.g. 300mm, 600mm, 900mm). Offsetting slightly from the center line improves cat walkability.
Mark a lineUse a try squareMarkSTEP 4 / 11Tip
- An unbalanced center of gravity tends to tip; use a square base with four posts as standard.
- Stepped arrangement with varying heights makes it easier for cats to climb.
- Using an awl to mark hole centers makes drilling easier.
Watch out
- Placing support posts too close to platform edges risks splitting when screwing.
- Misaligned post positions across boards cause distortion; overlay and transfer markings accurately.
- 5
Drill Pilot and Countersink Holes on Platform Boards and Support Posts
≈ 20 minDrill φ5mm pilot holes on platform boards and 2x4 lumber supports. Countersink the pilot holes on the platform boards with a countersink bit to recess screw heads flush. For hemp rope wrapped poles, use the included metal brackets to screw in.
Drill a holeφ5mmDrillSTEP 5 / 11Tip
- Countersinking creates a clean finish and prevents cats from snagging on screw heads.
- Use a drill stopper to control depth and prevent through holes.
- Keep pilot holes at least 20mm from the edge on 2x4 lumber to avoid splitting.
Watch out
- Driving 50mm screws without pilot holes causes 2x4 lumber to split.
- Too deep countersinking reduces fixing strength and may loosen screws.
- 6
Assemble Base Board and Support Posts
≈ 30 minStand two posts (hemp rope wrapped pole and 2x4 lumber) vertically on the base board (450×450). Drive three 50mm coarse-thread screws into each support post from under the board (total 6 screws). Use a square to confirm verticality during assembly. Use more screws on the base as it supports most weight.
Build the frameTighten joints firmlyAssembleSTEP 6 / 11Tip
- Check post verticality with a level from two directions (front and side) aiming for zero tilt.
- Apply wood glue on joint surfaces in addition to screws to increase rigidity.
- The backside of the base board is hidden, so screw heads can be numerous without concern.
Watch out
- Any tilt in support posts causes upper boards to tilt, making cats feel unstable.
- Too few screws cause posts to wobble with cat movement.
- 7
Attach Middle and Upper Platform Boards
≈ 30 minAttach middle and upper platform boards horizontally to the support posts at heights from 300 to 900mm. From under the boards, drill φ5mm pilot holes and drive 50mm coarse-thread screws into the posts (6 screws per platform: 2 posts × 3 screws each). Use a level to ensure each board is horizontal and securely fixed to withstand cats jumping.
Build the frameTighten joints firmlyAssembleSTEP 7 / 11Tip
- Uneven platform boards make cats uncomfortable.
- Drive screws along the post centerline to prevent splitting.
- Consider making upper platform boards smaller to balance the center of gravity.
Watch out
- Screw impact may shift lower platform boards; check level again after assembling all three.
- Insufficient screws risk fall accidents; design for cat weight + dynamic load up to 10kg.
- 8
Wrap Hemp Rope (Scratch Post Function)
≈ 30 minIf not using a ready-made hemp rope wrapped pole, tightly wrap 1m of φ8mm hemp rope around the 2x4 support post from bottom to top. Fix both ends with staples or screws. Wrap tightly leaving no gaps.
Build the frameTighten joints firmlyAssembleSTEP 8 / 11Tip
- Starting the wrap by inserting the rope into a hole drilled in the post and fixing it with wood glue prevents loosening.
- Fixing with staples during wrapping ensures tightness.
- Hiding the end by inserting it back into the start hole gives a clean finish.
Watch out
- Loose wrapping leads to cats pulling and unraveling the rope; wrap tightly and fix frequently.
- Avoid synthetic fiber ropes which cats may chew and ingest.
- 9
Attach Carpet (Fleece Material)
≈ 25 minAttach carpet to the top surfaces of three platform boards (upper, middle, base) using double-sided tape or wood glue. Trim corners with a cutter to fit the board shapes. Ensure attachment strength resists clawing.
Fix to the wallAnchor to studsInstallSTEP 9 / 11Tip
- Use strong double-sided tape that resists cats’ claws.
- Align carpet nap uniformly for better appearance.
- Leave a bit of excess at edges, fold under at the back for stronger adhesion.
Watch out
- Weak adhesion risks cats peeling off carpet during play and ingesting pieces.
- Avoid cheap carpets with latex backing that degrades to powder.
- 10
Fix to Wall to Prevent Tipping
≈ 20 minSecure the top of the tower to the wall using L-brackets and seismic straps to prevent tipping. Confirm stud locations with a stud sensor before fixing. Ensure brackets attach firmly to studs behind the drywall.
Fix to the wallAnchor to studsInstallSTEP 10 / 11Tip
- Wall fixation is essential for safety; a 1200mm tower easily tips when cats jump on.
- Seismic straps are available at discount stores but dedicated hardware from home centers offers better safety.
- Do not rely only on drywall; always fix to studs.
Watch out
- Omitting wall fixation risks tip-over during earthquakes, injuring cats.
- Confirm the bracket’s load capacity supports total tower weight, cats, and seismic forces.
- 11
Final Inspection and Introducing Cats
≈ 15 minCheck all screws are tight, carpet is well attached, and posts do not wobble. Place the tower at the installation site and confirm horizontal level. If wobbly, apply felt pads to the feet to adjust. Before introducing cats, shake the structure to confirm stability.
Done!Done — nice work!DoneSTEP 11 / 11Tip
- Placing cat treats on platform boards after assembly reduces cats’ wariness and encourages use.
- Do not force cats onto the tower on day one; allow natural exploration.
- Place other furniture nearby as 'stairs' to help cats climb during initial days.
Watch out
- Incomplete checks may lead to assembly defects causing injury.
- If cats don't climb, consider relocating or scents; observe for a while.
Warnings
- ⚠️Please drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
- ⚠️Make sure to tighten all joints securely to support the cat's weight.
