Build steps
- 1
Confirm Installation Location and Site Boundaries
≈ 30 minMeasure the planned installation line for the flower bed fence (1200×60×600mm). Clearly identify property boundaries, check distances to neighboring houses, existing structures, and the location of underground utilities such as pipes and electrical wiring.
MeasureW 1200 mmMeasureSTEP 1 / 9Tip
- Keep at least 50mm inside the property boundary for safety to avoid boundary disputes.
- Confirm the location of underground water and gas pipes with local authorities in advance to prevent accidents during post hole digging.
- Notify neighbors beforehand about the construction to explain noise and traffic effects.
Watch out
- Misunderstanding boundaries may cause disputes with neighbors; confirm with survey maps before work.
- Damaging underground pipes incurs liability; always confirm beforehand.
- 2
Cut Lumber and Prepare Stainless Steel Screws
≈ 45 minPrepare 2 posts (4x4 lumber 89×89×1200mm), 2 horizontal rails (2x4 lumber 38×89×1200mm), 7 boards (SPF lumber 1x4 19×89×600mm), 42 stainless steel coarse-thread screws 75mm, 3 bags of quick-setting mortar, and 2 cans of outdoor wood preservative (e.g. Xyladecor).
CutUse the in-store cut serviceCutSTEP 2 / 9Tip
- The post length of 2400mm includes 1800mm above ground and 600mm buried, which is the minimum depth to resist wind pressure.
- Stainless steel screws are essential for outdoor use; iron screws rust and weaken within a year.
- Choose quick-setting mortar so it hardens on the day and work can progress.
Watch out
- Insufficient burial depth of posts risks collapse in strong winds.
- Using iron screws causes rust stains on boards and damages the coating.
- 3
Dig Post Holes and Lay Gravel
≈ 90 minDig three holes for posts measuring 200mm diameter and 600mm deep. Space posts 900mm apart (for a 1200mm wide fence, one centered and two at ends). Lay 100mm thickness of gravel at the hole bottom to ensure drainage.
Drill a hole下穴 φ3.5mmDrillSTEP 3 / 9Tip
- Using a post hole digger reduces work time to one-third.
- Hole diameter ideally twice the post thickness (200mm) to allow mortar thickness to hold posts securely.
- Gravel layer prevents post bottoms from being submerged in water.
Watch out
- Insufficient hole depth risks collapse in strong winds; 600mm depth must be observed.
- Poor drainage holes cause post bottom decay; always include a gravel drainage layer.
- 4
Erect Posts and Fix with Mortar
≈ 120 minSet posts vertically into holes, check vertical alignment with a level and temporarily fix using stakes and wire. Mix quick-setting mortar and pour into holes to fix posts. Build mortar slightly higher than ground to prevent water pooling. Allow 24 hours for curing.
Build the frameTighten joints firmlyAssembleSTEP 4 / 9Tip
- Mix mortar with less water (stiff mix) for higher post-hardening strength.
- Check vertical alignment from two directions (front-back and left-right) with a level.
- Finish mortar surface about 10mm above ground to block water infiltration.
Watch out
- Strong wind before mortar cures can tilt posts; choose a calm day.
- Incorrect vertical alignment results in horizontal rails not being level.
- 5
Attach Horizontal Rails
≈ 60 minAfter mortar cures, attach two horizontal rails (38×89×1200mm) to the exterior (garden side) of the three posts at approximately 200mm, 900mm, and 1700mm above ground. Drill φ5mm pilot holes from the post side and drive two 75mm stainless steel coarse-thread screws per joint.
Build the frameTighten joints firmlyAssembleSTEP 5 / 9Tip
- Attach horizontal rails on the garden side of posts so that boards conceal rails from the road side for aesthetics.
- Use a level to confirm horizontal alignment before fastening.
- Drive screws from the post side; rails will be hidden behind boards, maintaining appearance.
Watch out
- Misaligned posts affect rail fit; measure actual post spacing before cutting rails.
- Driving screws without pilot holes may split 4x4 posts.
- 6
Attach Boards (1x4 Lumber)
≈ 90 minAttach twenty 1x4 SPF boards vertically to the horizontal rails. Leave about 5mm (about one finger width) gap between boards to allow wind pressure relief and ventilation. Fasten each board to upper, middle, and lower rails with one screw each (total 3 screws per board).
Build the frameTighten joints firmlyAssembleSTEP 6 / 9Tip
- Do not fit boards tightly; spacing relieves wind pressure, improves ventilation, and adds visual rhythm.
- Use chopsticks or 5mm spacers to keep intervals uniform.
- Keep bottom edges of boards 50mm above ground to avoid water exposure.
Watch out
- Tightly fitted boards increase risk of collapse from wind pressure.
- Boards touching the ground absorb water and rot; always elevate them.
- 7
Sanding and Preparing for Painting
≈ 60 minSand the entire assembled fence first with #120, then #240 grit sandpaper. Pay special attention to board surfaces, end grain, and corners. Remove all dust thoroughly before painting to improve adhesion of outdoor paint.
Sand#120SandSTEP 7 / 9Tip
- End grain is a water entry route; sanding prepares for paint to penetrate well.
- An orbital sander is convenient for large surfaces; consider rental services.
- Wear mask and protective glasses as dust will be generated.
Watch out
- Insufficient sanding results in poor paint adhesion and premature peeling outdoors.
- Painting over dust causes rough surface texture.
- 8
Apply First Coat of Outdoor Wood Preservative
≈ 90 minBrush on outdoor wood preservative (e.g. Xyladecor) evenly over entire fence, including both sides of boards, horizontal rails, and posts. Apply extra generously on end grain. Allow to dry naturally for 24 hours.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 8 / 9Tip
- Preservative penetration into end grain is critical for durability.
- For large areas, rolling is acceptable; use a brush to finish edges.
- Avoid painting under direct sunlight to prevent surface drying while inside remains wet; choose shade or cloudy weather.
Watch out
- Rain before drying causes streaking; check weather forecast before painting.
- Thick, gloppy paint causes uneven coverage; apply thin and uniform.
- 9
Second Coat and Final Inspection
≈ 90 minAfter the first coat is fully dry, apply a second coat thinner than the first. After drying at least 24 hours, inspect entire fence for protruding screw heads, uneven painting, and post stability.
Done!Done — nice work!DoneSTEP 9 / 9Tip
- Two coats greatly enhance outdoor durability; do not skip the second coat.
- Lightly sand with #240 grit before annual repainting to extend life over 10 years.
- Check post bases (ground level) twice a year as water tends to accumulate there.
Watch out
- Skipping the second coat causes peeling and wood decay within 2-3 years.
- Neglecting annual repainting leads to needing replacement in 10 years.
Warnings
- ⚠️For outdoor use, wood preservative treatment is essential (reapply annually recommended).
- ⚠️Use stainless steel screws (iron screws will rust).
- ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
