Build steps

  1. 1

    Confirm Location and Site Boundaries

    ≈ 30 min

Measure the planned line for installing the garden gate (900×100×900mm). Clearly identify the site boundaries and check distances to neighboring houses, existing structures, and underground installations (pipes and wiring).

    Measure
    W 900 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 9

    Tip

    • Keep at least 50mm inside the boundary line to avoid encroachment disputes.
    • Confirm positions of underground water and gas pipes with local authorities in advance to prevent accidents during post hole digging.
    • Notify neighbors beforehand about noise and traffic impact during construction.

    Watch out

    • Misunderstanding boundaries can lead to disputes; verify with survey maps before starting work.
    • Damaging underground piping incurs liability; always confirm beforehand.
  2. 2

Cut Components and Prepare Stainless Steel Screws

    ≈ 45 min

Cut two posts (4x4 lumber 89×89×2400mm), two horizontal rails (2x4 lumber 38×89×900mm), and twenty boards (SPF lumber 1x4 19×89×900mm). Prepare 120 stainless steel coarse-thread screws (75mm), three bags of quick-setting mortar, and two cans of outdoor wood preservative (e.g., Xyladecor).

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 2 / 9

    Tip

    • Post length 2400mm equals 1800mm above ground plus 600mm embedded depth, necessary for wind pressure resistance.
    • Stainless steel screws are a must for outdoor use; iron screws will rust within a year and lose strength.
    • Select quick-setting mortar to fix posts; it hardens on the day, enabling further work.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient embedment length risks collapse in strong winds.
    • Using iron screws causes rust stains on boards and damages paint film.
  3. 3

Dig Post Holes and Lay Gravel

    ≈ 90 min

Dig three holes for the posts, each 200mm diameter and 600mm deep. Posts should be spaced 900mm apart (center and ends of the 900mm fence width). Lay 100mm thick gravel at the bottom of holes to ensure drainage.

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 3 / 9

    Tip

    • Using a post hole digger reduces digging time to one third.
    • Hole diameter twice the post width (200mm) is ideal for mortar thickness to secure posts.
    • Gravel layer prevents the post bottoms from being submerged in water.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient hole depth risks collapse in strong winds; strictly follow 600mm depth.
    • Poor drainage causes post bottoms to rot; always ensure drainage layer with gravel.
  4. 4

Set Posts and Fix with Mortar

    ≈ 120 min

Erect posts vertically in holes, temporarily fixing with wooden stakes and wire while verifying verticality with a level. Mix quick-setting mortar and pour into holes to fix posts. Build mortar slightly higher than ground level to prevent water accumulation. Leave undisturbed for 24 hours until hardened.

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 4 / 9

    Tip

    • Mix mortar with less water (stiff consistency) for better final strength.
    • Check verticality in two directions (front/back and left/right) using a level.
    • Finish mortar surface 10mm above ground to prevent water ingress.

    Watch out

    • Strong winds before mortar sets may tilt posts; choose calm weather.
    • If posts are not vertical, horizontal rails will not be level.
  5. 5

    Attach Horizontal Rails

    ≈ 60 min

After mortar hardens, attach two horizontal rails (38×89×900mm) to the outside (garden side) of the three posts at approximately 200mm, 900mm, and 1700mm above ground. Drill 5mm pilot holes from the post side and fix with two stainless steel coarse-thread screws (75mm) per joint.

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 5 / 9

    Tip

    • Attach rails on the garden side of posts so that the boards hide rails from road view for aesthetics.
    • Confirm rails are horizontal with a level before fixing.
    • Drive screws from the post side; rails will be concealed by boards, maintaining appearance.

    Watch out

    • Post misalignment affects horizontal rail fit; measure actual post spacing before cutting rails.
    • Driving screws without pilot holes can split even 4x4 posts.
  6. 6

    Attach Boards (1x4 lumber)

    ≈ 90 min

Attach twenty SPF lumber 1x4 boards vertically to horizontal rails. Leave 5mm gaps (equivalent to one finger width) between boards to reduce wind pressure and allow ventilation. Secure each board with one screw into each horizontal rail (top, middle, bottom), totaling three screws per board.

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 6 / 9

    Tip

    • Avoid butting boards tightly; gaps relieve wind pressure, improve ventilation, and create visual rhythm.
    • Use chopsticks or 5mm spacers to keep consistent gaps.
    • Keep board bottoms 50mm above ground to prevent water contact.

    Watch out

    • Tight board placement increases risk of collapse from wind pressure.
    • Boards in direct ground contact absorb water and rot; always elevate.
  7. 7

    Sanding and Preparing for Painting

    ≈ 60 min

Sand the entire assembled fence with #120 grit followed by #240 grit sandpaper. Pay special attention to board surfaces, end grain, and corners. Remove all dust thoroughly before painting to improve adhesion of outdoor paint.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 7 / 9

    Tip

    • Sand end grain carefully as it is a primary water entry point; this helps the preservative penetrate well.
    • An orbital sander is convenient for large areas; consider rental services.
    • Wear mask and safety glasses due to dust generation.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient sanding results in poor paint adhesion and early peeling outdoors.
    • Painting over dust causes rough surfaces.
  8. 8

First Coat of Outdoor Wood Preservative

    ≈ 90 min

Apply an outdoor wood preservative such as Xyladecor over all surfaces (boards front and back, horizontal rails, and posts) using a brush. Apply more thoroughly on end grain to ensure absorption. Let dry naturally for 24 hours.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 8 / 9

    Tip

    • Penetration into end grain is critical for durability.
    • For large surfaces, rollers can be used, finishing edges with a brush.
    • Avoid direct sunlight during application to prevent surface drying before interior dries; choose shaded or cloudy conditions.

    Watch out

    • Rain before drying will cause the paint film to run.
    • Thick, uneven preservative leads to blotchy finish; apply thinly and evenly.
  9. 9

    Second Coat and Final Inspection

    ≈ 90 min

After the first coat fully dries, apply a second, slightly thinner coat. Allow at least 24 hours drying. Inspect the entire gate for protruding screw heads, uneven paint, and any instability in posts.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 9 / 9

    Tip

    • Two coats greatly improve outdoor durability; do not skip.
    • Annual maintenance sanding with #240 grit followed by reapplication extends life beyond 10 years.
    • Check post bases twice yearly as water tends to accumulate there.

    Watch out

    • Skipping the second coat causes paint to peel in 2-3 years, leading to wood decay.
    • Neglecting annual reapplication reduces wood lifespan to about 10 years, necessitating replacement.

Warnings

  • ⚠️For outdoor use, applying wood preservative is essential (reapplication recommended annually).
  • ⚠️Use stainless steel screws (iron screws will rust).
  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before screwing to prevent wood splitting.
