Build steps

  1. 1

Confirm installation location and property boundaries

    ≈ 30 min

Measure the planned installation line for the balcony privacy panel (1200×40×1500mm). Clearly identify property boundaries, confirm distances to neighboring houses, existing structures, and underground utilities (pipes, wiring).

    Measure
    W 1200 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 9

    Tip

    • Stay at least 50mm inside property boundaries for safety to prevent boundary disputes.
    • Confirm locations of underground water and gas pipes with local authorities beforehand to prevent accidents when digging post holes.
    • Notify neighbors in advance to explain noise and traffic impacts during construction.

    Watch out

    • Misunderstanding boundaries can lead to disputes with neighbors; verify survey maps before construction.
    • Damaging underground utilities may cause liability; always confirm location in advance.
  2. 2

Cut parts and prepare stainless steel screws

    ≈ 45 min

Prepare two posts (4x4 lumber 89×89×2100mm), two horizontal rails (2x4 lumber 38×89×1200mm), seventeen boards (SPF lumber 1x4 19×89×1500mm), 102 stainless steel coarse-thread screws 75mm, three bags of quick-setting mortar, and two cans of outdoor wood preservative (such as Xyladecor).

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 2 / 9

    Tip

    • Post length 2400mm = 1800mm above ground + 600mm buried; burial depth is the minimum to withstand wind pressure.
    • Stainless steel screws are essential for outdoor use; iron screws will rust within a year and lose strength.
    • Choose quick-setting mortar to set and allow work to proceed on the same day.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient burial depth of posts risks collapse from strong winds.
    • Using iron screws causes rust stains on boards and damages paint film.
  3. 3

Dig post holes and lay gravel

    ≈ 90 min

Dig three post holes 200mm diameter and 600mm deep. Space posts 900mm apart (center + ends of 1200mm fence width). Lay 100mm thick gravel at hole bottoms for drainage.

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 3 / 9

    Tip

    • Using a post hole digger reduces work to one-third.
    • Hole diameter ideal at twice post width (200mm) allows mortar thickness to fix posts.
    • Gravel layer prevents post bottoms from standing in water.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient hole depth risks collapse from strong winds; 600mm depth is mandatory.
    • Poor drainage causes post base rot; always create drainage layer with gravel.
  4. 4

Set posts vertically and fix with mortar

    ≈ 120 min

Set posts vertically in holes, confirm verticality with level, and temporarily fix with stakes and wire. Mix quick-setting mortar and pour into holes to fix posts. Build mortar slightly higher than ground to prevent water accumulation. Leave to cure undisturbed for 24 hours.

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 4 / 9

    Tip

    • Mix mortar with minimal water (firm consistency); too soft reduces strength after curing.
    • Confirm verticality in two directions (front-back and left-right) with level.
    • Finish mortar surface 10mm above ground to prevent water ingress.

    Watch out

    • Strong wind before mortar cures can tilt posts; choose wind-free day.
    • If posts are not vertical, horizontal rails will not align level.
  5. 5

    Attach horizontal rails

    ≈ 60 min

After mortar cures, attach two horizontal rails (38×89×1200mm) outside of the three posts (garden side) at upper, middle, and lower positions. Heights approximately 200mm, 900mm, and 1700mm from ground. Drill φ5mm pilot holes from post side, then drive two stainless steel coarse-thread screws 75mm at each joint.

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 5 / 9

    Tip

    • Attach rails to garden side of posts; when viewed from road side, boards hide rails for aesthetics.
    • Confirm rails are level with a level before fastening.
    • Drive screws from post side; rails will be concealed by boards, preserving appearance.

    Watch out

    • Post misalignment affects rails; measure post spacing before cutting rails.
    • Without pilot holes, 4x4 posts may split when screwing.
  6. 6

    Attach boards (1x4 lumber)

    ≈ 90 min

Attach 20 SPF lumber 1x4 boards vertically to horizontal rails. Leave 5mm gaps (about one finger width) between boards to release wind pressure and ensure ventilation. Attach with three screws each (one screw each on upper, middle, and lower rails).

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 6 / 9

    Tip

    • Do not tightly pack boards; gaps allow wind pressure relief, ventilation, and visual rhythm.
    • Use chopsticks or 5mm spacers to keep gap uniform.
    • Keep board bottoms 50mm above ground to avoid water contact.

    Watch out

    • Tightly nailed boards increase risk of collapse from wind pressure.
    • Boards contacting ground absorb water and rot; always keep elevated.
  7. 7

    Sanding and surface preparation

    ≈ 60 min

Sand entire assembled fence starting with #120 grit then #240 grit. Especially sand board surfaces, ends, and corners carefully. Remove dust completely before painting to ensure outdoor paint adhesion.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 7 / 9

    Tip

    • Wood ends are water entry points; sand thoroughly to prepare for paint penetration.
    • Orbital sander is convenient for large areas; consider rental services.
    • Wear mask and safety glasses due to dust.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient sanding reduces paint adhesion and leads to early outdoor paint peeling.
    • Painting over dust causes rough surface.
  8. 8

Apply first coat of outdoor wood preservative

    ≈ 90 min

Brush on outdoor wood preservative (such as Xyladecor) over entire surface. Apply on front and back of boards, horizontal rails, and posts. Apply more on wood ends to soak in. Dry naturally for 24 hours.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 8 / 9

    Tip

    • Penetration into wood ends is key for preservation; focus on these areas.
    • For large areas, rollers can be used; finish edges with brush.
    • Avoid direct sunlight during painting which causes surface drying but inner moisture remains; aim for shade or cloudy days.

    Watch out

    • Rain before drying causes paint to run; check weather forecast before painting.
    • Thick or heavy paint causes uneven coating; apply thin and even.
  9. 9

Apply second coat and final inspection

    ≈ 90 min

After first coat dries completely, apply second coat thinner than the first. After drying at least 24 hours, inspect entire fence. Check that screw heads are not protruding, no paint irregularities, and posts are stable without wobble.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 9 / 9

    Tip

    • Two coats greatly improve outdoor durability; do not skip second coat.
    • Annual maintenance with light sanding (#240 grit) and recoating extends lifespan beyond 10 years.
    • Check post bases (ground interface) twice yearly as water tends to accumulate.

    Watch out

    • Skipping second coat causes paint peeling and wood rot within 2-3 years.
    • Neglecting annual recoating leads to replacement within 10 years.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Use wood preservative coating if the panel is used outdoors (reapply annually recommended).
  • ⚠️Use stainless steel screws (iron screws will rust).
  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
