Build steps

  1. 1

    Measure and Confirm Installation Environment

    ≈ 15 min

Measure the installation place for the garden table (1200×700×720mm). Check the space required in front and back to pull out the chair (chair depth plus at least 400mm) and the movement line for serving dishes.

    Measure
    W 1200 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 12

    Tip

    • For a standard dining style, allocate about 600mm width × 400mm depth per person.
    • Table height of 720mm assumes a standard dining chair seat height (420mm) plus 300mm clearance.
    • Maintain at least 800mm distance to the wall so chairs can be pulled out.

    Watch out

    • A 1200×700mm tabletop fits four people but may feel cramped if large serving dishes are common.
    • Failing to account for chair backs during measurement can result in a configuration that restricts chair access.
  2. 2

Create Cutting List and Order Materials at Home Center

    ≈ 40 min

Prepare nine pieces of 2x6 lumber (38×140×1200mm) for the tabletop; four legs (38×89×682mm), two long aprons (38×89×1124mm), and two short aprons (38×89×1124mm) from 2x4 lumber. Prepare 60 pieces of 75mm coarse-thread screws. Using the home center's paid cutting service is convenient.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 2 / 12

    Tip

    • Note that 2x6 lumber actual dimensions are 38×140mm; nominal and actual sizes differ.
    • Lining up 9 boards of 140mm width yields 1260mm total; with 3mm gaps between each board, total width becomes 1284mm.
    • Effective tabletop width is 9×140 + 8×3 = 1284mm, exceeding the target width of 1200mm, so adjust the board count or width accordingly.

    Watch out

    • Selecting warped or twisted 2x6 boards will cause a wavy tabletop; visually inspect boards one by one at purchase.
    • Leg length 682mm equals total height 720mm minus tabletop thickness 38mm; specify actual dimensions when ordering cuts to avoid mistakes.
  3. 3

    Sand All Components

    ≈ 50 min

Sand with sandpaper in the order #120 → #180 → #240. Sand the 2x6 boards for the tabletop especially carefully. After raising the grain by wiping with a damp cloth and complete drying, finish with #240 to make the surface less likely to absorb stains during meals.

    Sand
    #120 → #180 → #240
    SandSTEP 3 / 12

    Tip

    • No splinters allowed where food touches; verify by stroking with fingertips.
    • The wetting-drying sanding (water raising fiber) process reduces fuzziness after finishing.
    • Using an orbital sander shortens time; consider rental services.

    Watch out

    • Forgetting to chamfer edges causes snagging of clothes and skin; especially watch at child's face height.
    • Sanding generates much dust; perform in a ventilated space like a balcony or garage.
  4. 4

Temporary Assembly of Legs and Aprons (Frame Construction)

    ≈ 45 min

On each of the four legs, measure 50mm down from the top edge and position the long and short aprons. Attach aprons on the outer side of the legs and drive two 75mm coarse-thread screws each for joints. Confirm that a rectangular frame is formed. Check right angles at all corners with a carpenter's square.

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 4 / 12

    Tip

    • Strength varies whether aprons are attached inside or outside the legs; outside mounting looks better, inside gives stronger contact with the tabletop.
    • Drill φ5mm pilot holes on apron side before screwing to prevent splitting legs.
    • Right angles at joints directly affect tabletop fit.

    Watch out

    • Driving 75mm screws without pilot holes easily splits 2x4 lumber.
    • Assemble legs with consistent grain and knot direction; mismatched orientation looks untidy.
  5. 5

Check Frame Right Angles and Diagonal Lengths

    ≈ 15 min

Place the assembled frame on a flat floor and check all four legs contact the floor (wobble check). Measure inner diagonal lengths with tape; confirm difference is within 2mm. If not, loosen screws, adjust frame by clamping diagonally, and re-tighten.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 5 / 12

    Tip

    • Measurement should be done on a flat surface to avoid errors.
    • If diagonal difference exceeds 5mm, the tabletop will sit askew; keep under 2mm.
    • A wobble means one leg is lifted; adjust until all legs touch the floor.

    Watch out

    • Ignoring frame distortion and proceeding causes warped tabletop and ill-fitting edges.
    • The carpenter's square must be accurate; cheaper ones can be off by more than 0.5 degrees.
  6. 6

    Assemble the Tabletop

    ≈ 40 min

Lay out nine 2x6 boards for the tabletop on a workbench with grain direction aligned. Insert 3mm-thick chopstick spacers between boards to allow wood breathing. Attach two reinforcing 2x4 battens underneath, secured with wood glue and 45mm coarse-thread screws, to unify the tabletop.

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 6 / 12

    Tip

    • Alternate growth ring directions of boards to counteract warping and reduce cracking.
    • Position battens 200mm in from the tabletop edges for aesthetics.
    • 45mm screws are shorter than 38mm board thickness and won't penetrate through; verify actual length.

    Watch out

    • Tight joints without gaps cause swelling and warping of the tabletop due to moisture.
    • Slanted batten attachment distorts the entire tabletop; verify right angles with carpenter's square.
  7. 7

    Secure Tabletop to Frame

    ≈ 30 min

Place tabletop on the frame and check balanced overhang of about 30mm on all sides. Drill φ5mm pilot holes from apron to tabletop underside and drive 75mm coarse-thread screws—4 from each long apron and 2 from each short apron, totaling 12 screws.

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 12

    Tip

    • 30-50mm overhang prevents interference during dining motions.
    • Drive screws toward inside of aprons, not at the center, to reduce splitting.
    • Screw length must not penetrate tabletop; keep length within apron thickness plus 20mm.

    Watch out

    • Driving 75mm screws directly can cause screw heads to protrude from tabletop surface; use pilot holes and countersink.
    • Too large overhang (over 50mm) causes tabletop flexing; approx. 30mm is ideal.
  8. 8

    Pre-Coating Surface Preparation

    ≈ 20 min

Lightly sand entire surface again with #240 sandpaper and remove dust with a damp cloth before coating. Use water-based urethane varnish, xyladecor, or Osmo Color for outdoor use. For food contact surfaces, use coatings labeled compliant with Food Sanitation Law for safety.

    Sand
    #240
    SandSTEP 8 / 12

    Tip

    • Water-based urethane varnish (matte or semi-gloss) is highly water and heat resistant, suitable for dining tables.
    • Xyladecor retains natural wood texture with a soft finish.
    • Always test paint on scrap wood to confirm color before final application.

    Watch out

    • Glue residue repels coating; sand with #240 to remove.
    • Applying paint over residual dust causes rough surface; clean thoroughly.
  9. 9

    First Coat of Finish

    ≈ 40 min

Brush paint evenly over all surfaces in order of tabletop, aprons, legs, then underside. Apply along wood grain in one direction avoiding brush marks. For water-based urethane varnish, wait about 3 hours, and for xyladecor, allow 15-20 minutes soaking then wipe off excess and dry 2 hours.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 9 / 12

    Tip

    • Apply thin coats twice for urethane varnish; thick coating causes bubbles and shrinkage.
    • Wipe excess xyladecor to prevent stickiness after drying.
    • Place in dust-free area while drying.

    Watch out

    • Applying thick or dripping paint causes uneven drying and blemishes.
    • Drying under direct heater airflow causes surface drying and internal semi-wetness; wait for natural drying.
  10. 10

    Intermediate Sanding and Second Coat

    ≈ 40 min

After the first coat is fully dry, lightly sand surface with #400 ultra-fine sandpaper (intermediate sanding). Remove dust and apply the second thinner coat. For enhanced durability, add a third coat with another intermediate sanding in between.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 10 / 12

    Tip

    • Intermediate sanding with #400 lightly smooths raised fibers.
    • Two coats significantly improve water and abrasion resistance; essential for dining tables.
    • Three coats yield a harder, glossier finish like commercial tables.

    Watch out

    • Excessive sanding after first coat can peel finish.
    • Touching before drying leaves fingerprints and dust; strictly observe 24-hour drying time.
  11. 11

    Allow Finish to Fully Cure

    ≈ 10 min

After painting, wait at least 72 hours before placing heavy objects; water-based urethane varnish takes one week to fully cure. Avoid using the table for dining or work and lightly cover with cloth to prevent dust.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 11 / 12

    Tip

    • Cure time varies by coating type; strictly follow label instructions.
    • Confirm full cure by pressing surface lightly with fingernail leaving no mark.
    • Cure times vary by temperature: summer 3-4 days, winter up to 1 week.

    Watch out

    • Placing hot pots before cure melts coating causing marks.
    • Dropping dishes can chip the finish; be careful until fully cured.
  12. 12

Attach Leg Pads and Final Checks

    ≈ 20 min

Stick felt pads to the bottom of all four legs to prevent floor damage. Move table to installation location and check horizontality with a level. Adjust pad thickness if wobbling occurs. Test sitting; ensure knees don't hit the apron.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 12 / 12

    Tip

    • Felt pads 10mm thick absorb floor unevenness.
    • Use felt pads for hard floors, rubber pads for tatami mats.
    • If wobble persists, adjust one pad thickness for balance.

    Watch out

    • Using table without pads damages floor due to table weight.
    • Incorrect chair-table height difference (270-300mm) causes poor dining posture.

Warnings

  • ⚠️When used outdoors, applying wood preservative coating is essential (recoating annually is recommended).
  • ⚠️Use stainless steel screws (iron screws will rust).
  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
