Measure and confirm installation environment
≈ 15 minMeasure the installation area for the camping roll table (900×600×600mm). Confirm clearance in front and back when a chair is pulled out (chair depth plus at least 400mm) and check the flow for placing dishes.
MeasureW 900 mmMeasureSTEP 1 / 12Tip
- For standard dining style, allocate 600mm width × 400mm depth per person.
- Table height 720mm assumes a typical dining chair seat (420mm) plus 300mm clearance.
- Maintain at least 800mm distance to the wall to allow pulling out the chair.
Watch out
- 1200×700mm tabletop is standard for 4 people but may feel cramped in households with many large dishes.
- Overlooking chair backrest thickness during measurement can cause impossible seating arrangements.
- 2
Prepare cut list and order at home center
≈ 40 minPrepare seven 2×6 boards (38×140×900mm) for the tabletop, four 2×4 legs (38×89×662mm), two long aprons (38×89×824mm), and two short aprons (38×89×824mm). Prepare 60 pieces of 75mm coarse-thread screws. Paid cutting service at home centers is convenient.
CutUse the in-store cut serviceCutSTEP 2 / 12Tip
- 2×6 lumber actual size is 38×140mm; nominal and actual sizes differ, so be careful.
- Arranging nine tabletop boards results in 140×9=1260mm length; with 3mm gaps between boards totaling 24mm, overall length becomes 1284mm.
- Actual effective tabletop width is 9×140 + 8×3 = 1284mm which exceeds target 900mm, so adjust board count or width accordingly.
Watch out
- Selecting warped or twisted 2×6 lumber causes uneven tabletop; visually check each board at purchase.
- Leg length 682mm = table height 700mm minus tabletop thickness 38mm; give actual measurements when ordering to avoid mistakes.
- 3
Sand all parts
≈ 50 minSand with #120, then #180, and finally #240 grit sandpaper. Sand the 2×6 tabletop boards meticulously — wet wipe repeatedly to raise the grain, completely dry, then finish with #240 to reduce stain absorption during meals.
Sand#120SandSTEP 3 / 12Tip
- No splinters allowed on dining surfaces; check by running fingertips over surfaces.
- Wet wiping, drying, and re-sanding ('water popping') reduces raised grain after use.
- Using an orbital sander shortens sanding time; consider rental services if available.
Watch out
- Failure to chamfer edges can cause snags on clothing or skin, especially near children's face height.
- Sanding produces large amounts of dust; perform in ventilated areas such as balconies or garages.
- 4
Temporary assembly of legs and aprons (frame construction)
≈ 45 minPlace the four legs, marking 50mm down from the top end to mount long and short aprons. Attach aprons on the outside of legs using two 75mm coarse-thread screws per joint. Confirm right angles at corners with a carpenter's square; completion of rectangular frame means success.
Build the frameTighten joints firmlyAssembleSTEP 4 / 12Tip
- Apron placement outside or inside legs affects strength; outside looks better but inside supports tabletop better.
- Drill φ5mm pilot holes in aprons before screwing to prevent leg splitting.
- Right angle at joints directly impacts accurate tabletop fitting.
Watch out
- Driving in 75mm screws without pilot holes splits 2×4 lumber easily.
- Assembling legs without aligning knots and grain direction results in inconsistent appearance.
- 5
Check frame right angles and diagonals
≈ 15 minPlace the assembled frame on a flat floor and verify all four legs contact the floor (check for wobble). Measure two diagonal inner lengths with tape measure; confirm difference within 2mm. If misaligned, loosen screws, clamp from diagonal direction to adjust, then retighten.
InspectNo wobble ✓InspectSTEP 5 / 12Tip
- Use a flat surface for measurement to avoid skewed results.
- Diagonal difference over 5mm causes tilted tabletop; keep within 2mm.
- Correct any leg wobble until all legs firmly touch floor.
Watch out
- Proceeding with frame warpage leads to tabletop gaps or lifting.
- Inexpensive carpenter's squares may have >0.5° error, compromising accuracy.
- 6
Assemble tabletop
≈ 40 minLay nine 2×6 boards side by side on a workbench, aligning grain direction. Insert 3mm thick chopsticks between boards to create expansion gaps (wood breathing space). Attach two reinforcing 2×4 battens underneath with wood glue and 45mm coarse-thread screws, integrating the tabletop into one unit.
Build the frameTighten joints firmlyAssembleSTEP 6 / 12Tip
- Alternate growth ring direction between boards to compensate warping (crack prevention).
- Place battens 200mm inside from tabletop edges to enhance appearance.
- 45mm screws must not penetrate 38mm thickness; verify length by measuring.
Watch out
- Butting boards without gaps causes swelling and warping from moisture; always leave 3mm breathing spaces.
- Battens attached at an angle warp entire tabletop; confirm right angles with square.
- 7
Fix tabletop to frame
≈ 30 minPlace the tabletop on the frame and adjust front-back and left-right balance with about 30mm equal overhang on each side. Drill φ5mm pilot holes from aprons into tabletop underside and drive 75mm coarse-thread screws: four from each long apron and two from each short apron, total 12 screws.
Build the frameTighten joints firmlyAssembleSTEP 7 / 12Tip
- 30-50mm overhang avoids disturbance to dining actions.
- Drive screws slightly inside rather than in the center of aprons to reduce wood splitting.
- Screw length should not exceed apron thickness plus 20mm to avoid passing through tabletop bottom.
Watch out
- Driving 75mm screws without pilot holes and countersinking may cause screw heads to protrude on tabletop surface.
- Overhang exceeding 50mm causes tabletop sagging; around 30mm is ideal.
- 8
Prepare surface for painting
≈ 20 minLightly sand the entire piece again with #240 sandpaper before painting and wipe off dust with a damp cloth. Use water-based urethane varnish, wood preservatives such as Xyladecor or Osmo Color for outdoor use. Use coatings labeled ‘Food Sanitation Law compliant’ on surfaces contacting food for safety.
Sand#240SandSTEP 8 / 12Tip
- Water-based urethane varnish (matte or semi-gloss) provides strong water and heat resistance, ideal for dining tables.
- Xyladecor preserves natural wood texture for a softer finish.
- Always test paint on scrap wood first to check color and finish.
Watch out
- Glue residues repel paint; always sand these areas with #240.
- Painting over dust causes rough surface; clean thoroughly before painting.
- 9
First coat painting
≈ 40 minApply paint evenly with a brush over all surfaces in order: tabletop, aprons, legs, then undersides. Brush along wood grain in one direction to avoid streaks. For water-based urethane varnish, allow about 3 hours drying; for Xyladecor, let penetrate 15-20 minutes then wipe off excess and dry 2 hours.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 9 / 12Tip
- Apply thin coats in two layers for urethane varnish; thick coats form bubbles or shrink.
- Wipe off excess Xyladecor to prevent sticky residue after drying.
- Keep painted pieces in low dust environment during drying.
Watch out
- Applying thick varnish leads to dripping and uneven finish.
- Drying under heater's hot air flow may cause surface to dry prematurely, leaving the inside semi-wet; natural drying preferred.
- 10
Intermediate sanding and second coat
≈ 40 minAfter the first coat fully dries, lightly sand surface using #400 ultrafine sandpaper (intermediate sanding). Remove dust and apply the second coat thinner than the first. For dining purposes, applying three coats with another intermediate sanding is advised to increase film thickness.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 10 / 12Tip
- #400 intermediate sanding just smooths raised fibers gently.
- Two coats significantly improve water resistance and abrasion resistance, essential for dining tables.
- Applying three coats yields a hard glossy finish similar to professional tables.
Watch out
- Excessive sanding can peel off the first coat.
- Touching surface before full drying causes fingerprints and dust adherence; observe 24-hour drying period.
- 11
Wait for paint film to fully cure
≈ 10 minAfter painting, wait at least 72 hours before placing heavy objects to allow complete curing. Water-based urethane varnish fully cures in one week. During this period, avoid eating or working on the table and lightly cover it to prevent dust accumulation.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 11 / 12Tip
- Curing times vary by paint type; always follow manufacturer instructions.
- Check curing by pressing lightly with a fingernail; no indent indicates readiness.
- Drying varies with temperature: 3-4 days in summer, more than a week in winter.
Watch out
- Placing hot pots before curing melts and damages the finish.
- Dropping dishes can chip cured but still vulnerable coating; handle carefully until fully cured.
- 12
Attach leg pads and final checks
≈ 20 minAttach felt pads at the bottom of all four legs to prevent floor damage. Move the table to its placement, verify levelness with a level. Adjust pad thickness if wobble exists. Sit on the chair positioned under the table and check that knees do not hit aprons.
Done!Done — nice work!DoneSTEP 12 / 12Tip
- Use 10mm thick felt pads to absorb floor unevenness.
- Use felt pads for hard floors and rubber pads for tatami mats.
- If wobble remains, adjust by replacing one pad with a thinner one.
Watch out
- Using without pads damages the floor under weight.
- If height difference between chair and table (difference between seat and apron) is not 270-300mm, dining posture worsens.
Warnings
- ⚠️Apply wood preservative for outdoor use (recommended to repaint yearly).
- ⚠️Use stainless steel screws (iron screws will rust).
- ⚠️Drill pilot holes before screwing to prevent wood splitting.
