Confirm Measurements and Usage Environment
≈ 15 minMeasure the installation location for the round garden table (900×900×720mm). Confirm space behind and in front for chair movement (chair depth + at least 400mm) and the serving flow for dishes.
MeasureW 900 mmMeasureSTEP 1 / 12Tip
- Standard dining space per person is about 600mm width × 400mm depth.
- Table height 720mm assumes a typical dining chair seat height of 420mm plus clearance of 300mm.
- Maintain at least 800mm distance from the wall to allow chair pulling out.
Watch out
- A tabletop of 1200×700mm is standard for four people but may feel cramped with many large dishes.
- Neglecting to account for chair backrest space may cause difficult entry and exit.
- 2
Create Cutting List and Order Lumber from Home Center
≈ 40 minPrepare seven pieces of 2x6 lumber for the tabletop (38×140×900mm), four legs of 2x4 lumber (38×89×682mm), two long side aprons (38×89×824mm), and two short side aprons (38×89×824mm). Prepare 60 coarse-thread screws 75mm. Using the home center's paid cutting service is convenient.
CutUse the in-store cut serviceCutSTEP 2 / 12Tip
- 2x6 lumber actual size is 38×140mm; note the nominal vs actual size difference.
- Nine 2x6 boards 140mm wide equal 1260mm. Even with 3mm gaps between boards, total width reaches 1284mm, exceeding 900mm, so adjust number or width of boards accordingly.
- Effective tabletop width is 9×140 + 8×3mm gaps =1284mm, larger than 900mm; review plans accordingly.
Watch out
- Selecting warped or twisted 2x6 boards causes uneven tabletop surface. Inspect each board visually during purchase.
- Leg length 682mm = desired table height 720mm minus tabletop thickness 38mm. Specify actual sizes precisely to avoid cutting errors.
- 3
Sand All Parts
≈ 50 minSand with #120, then #180, and finish with #240 grit sandpaper. Carefully sand the tabletop 2x6 boards — repeatedly wipe with a damp cloth to raise the grain, let dry completely, then finish with #240. This process reduces stain absorption during meals.
Sand#120SandSTEP 3 / 12Tip
- No splinters on dining surfaces are critical; check smoothness with the pad of your finger.
- The wetting and drying sanding process ('water popping') reduces raised grain after finishing.
- Using an orbital sander speeds sanding; consider rental services.
Watch out
- Forgetting to chamfer edges causes clothes or skin to catch, especially at children's face height.
- Sanding produces a lot of dust; perform outdoors or in a well-ventilated garage or balcony.
- 4
Assemble Legs and Aprons Temporarily (Frame Construction)
≈ 45 minPosition the long and short aprons on the legs, 50mm down from the top end of the legs. Attach aprons on the exterior side of legs using two 75mm coarse-thread screws each joint. Confirm right angles at all frame corners using a carpenter's square; a rectangular frame indicates success.
Build the frameTighten joints firmlyAssembleSTEP 4 / 12Tip
- Attaching aprons outside the legs improves appearance, but inside provides stronger contact with the tabletop.
- Drill φ5mm pilot holes in the apron side before screwing to prevent splitting the legs.
- Accurate right angles at joints are critical for tabletop fitting later.
Watch out
- Driving 75mm screws without pilot holes easily splits 2x4 lumber.
- If leg grain direction or knots are inconsistent, appearance will look uneven.
- 5
Check Frame Right Angles and Diagonal Lengths
≈ 15 minPlace the assembled frame on a flat floor, check that all four legs contact the floor with no wobbling. Measure inside diagonal lengths at two corners using a tape measure; confirm they match within 2mm. If skewed, loosen screws and use clamps to correct, then retighten.
InspectNo wobble ✓InspectSTEP 5 / 12Tip
- Measurements are invalid on uneven floors; work on a flat surface.
- If diagonal difference exceeds 5mm, the tabletop will sit tilted; keep within 2mm.
- Wobble occurs if any one leg is lifted; adjust so all legs are in contact.
Watch out
- Ignoring distortion before proceeding causes tabletop edge misalignment.
- Low-quality carpenter's squares may have inaccuracies over 0.5 degrees, causing assembly errors.
- 6
Assemble Tabletop
≈ 40 minLay the nine 2x6 tabletop boards side by side on a workbench, aligning the wood grain direction. Insert 3mm thick chopsticks between boards to allow wood movement (breathing space). Attach two 2x4 reinforcing battens to the underside using wood glue and 45mm coarse-thread screws to unify the tabletop.
Build the frameTighten joints firmlyAssembleSTEP 6 / 12Tip
- Alternating heartwood ray directions of boards helps counter warping and cracking.
- Place battens 200mm inside from the tabletop edges for aesthetics.
- Confirm 45mm screws do not penetrate the 38mm thick tabletop by measuring length.
Watch out
- Tight butt joints without gaps cause tabletop swelling and warping from moisture.
- Battens installed askew cause overall tabletop distortion; verify right angles with a carpenter's square.
- 7
Attach Tabletop to Frame
≈ 30 minPlace the tabletop on the frame, confirming equal overhang of about 30mm on all sides. Drill φ5mm pilot holes from the aprons upwards into the tabletop underside, then secure using 75mm coarse-thread screws: 4 screws from each long apron and 2 from each short apron, total 12 screws.
Build the frameTighten joints firmlyAssembleSTEP 7 / 12Tip
- Overhang (tabletop beyond apron edge) of 30-50mm avoids interference during use.
- Screws placed toward the inside rather than the apron center reduce wood splitting.
- Screw length should be no longer than apron thickness plus 20mm to avoid penetrating tabletop surface.
Watch out
- Driving 75mm screws directly without pilot holes and countersinking may cause screw heads to protrude on tabletop surface.
- Excessive overhang (over 50mm) causes tabletop flex; about 30mm is optimal.
- 8
Prepare Surface for Painting
≈ 20 minLightly sand the entire surface again with #240 grit sandpaper before painting, then wipe off dust with a damp cloth. Use water-based urethane varnish, or wood preservatives like Xyladecor or Osmo Color suited for outdoor use. For food contact surfaces, use paint labeled 'compliant with food sanitation law.'
Sand#240SandSTEP 8 / 12Tip
- Water-based urethane varnish (matte or semi-gloss) offers strong water and heat resistance, ideal for dining tables.
- Xyladecor preserves natural wood texture with a soft finish.
- Always test paint on scrap wood to verify color before main application.
Watch out
- Glue residues repel paint; remove them by sanding with #240 grit.
- Painting over dust results in rough surfaces; clean thoroughly before coating.
- 9
First Coat of Paint
≈ 40 minApply paint evenly over entire surface using a brush, working in order: tabletop, aprons, legs, then underside. Brush along grain in one direction avoiding brush marks. For water-based urethane varnish, dry about 3 hours; for Xyladecor, penetrate 15-20 minutes, wipe excess, then dry 2 hours.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 9 / 12Tip
- Apply thin coats of urethane varnish twice; thick coats cause bubbles and shrinkage.
- Always wipe off excess Xyladecor to avoid sticky finish after drying.
- Dry in a low-dust environment.
Watch out
- Applying varnish too thick leads to dripping and uneven drying.
- Direct heating or forced drying causes surface dry but underdry inside, causing defects.
- 10
Intermediate Sanding and Second Coat
≈ 40 minOnce the first coat is fully dry, gently abrade the surface with very fine #400 sandpaper (intermediate sanding). Remove dust and apply the second coat more thinly. For a thicker film (3 coats) typical for dining tables, repeat intermediate sanding again between coats.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 10 / 12Tip
- #400 sanding lightly smooths raised grain without removing paint film.
- Two coats significantly improve waterproof and abrasion resistance, essential for dining tables.
- Three coats provide a hard, glossy finish like professional tables.
Watch out
- Overzealous intermediate sanding can expose the first coat.
- Touching surface before full cure leaves fingerprints and dust marks; follow 24-hour drying strictly.
- 11
Wait for Complete Paint Cure
≈ 10 minAfter finishing painting, wait at least 72 hours without placing heavy objects to allow full curing. Water-based urethane varnish fully cures in one week. During this period, avoid using the table even for meals or work and lightly cover with a cloth to keep dust off.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 11 / 12Tip
- Cure times vary by paint; strictly follow instructions on can.
- Check cure by lightly pressing surface with fingernail; no indentation indicates cure.
- Summer curing takes 3-4 days; winter can exceed one week due to temperature.
Watch out
- Placing hot pots directly before full cure melts the paint.
- Dropping dishes causes paint chipping; handle carefully until cure is complete.
- 12
Attach Leg Pads and Final Checks
≈ 20 minStick felt pads to the bottom of all four legs to prevent floor damage. Move the table to its location, check horizontality using a level. Adjust pad thickness to eliminate wobble. Place chairs and sit to confirm knees do not hit aprons.
Done!Done — nice work!DoneSTEP 12 / 12Tip
- 10mm thick felt pads absorb floor unevenness.
- Use felt pads on hard floors and rubber pads on tatami mats.
- If wobble persists, adjust with a thinner pad on one leg.
Watch out
- Not using pads causes floor scratches from table weight.
- Improper chair-to-table height clearance (270-300mm) results in poor dining posture.
Warnings
- ⚠️For outdoor use, applying a wood preservative is essential (reapplication recommended annually).
- ⚠️Use stainless steel screws (iron screws will rust).
- ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
