   Measurement and Environmental Check

   Measure the installation location for the folding garden table (900×600×720mm). Confirm the space required in front and behind the chair for sitting (chair depth + 400mm or more), and check the dish serving flow.

   Creating Cut List and Ordering at Home Center

   Prepare 7 pieces of 2×6 lumber for the tabletop (38×140×900mm), 4 pieces of 2×4 lumber for legs (38×89×682mm), 2 long side apron boards (38×89×824mm), 2 short side apron boards (38×89×524mm). Prepare 60 pieces of 75mm coarse-thread screws. Using home center cutting service is convenient.

   Tip

   • 2×6 lumber actual size is 38×140mm; note difference from nominal size.
   • Nine 140mm boards side by side total 1260mm; even with 3mm gaps between, total width is 1284mm exceeding 900mm — adjust number or width accordingly.
   • Actual effective tabletop width is 9×140 + 8×3mm gaps = 1284mm, over 900mm, requiring adjustment of number or width of boards.

   Watch out

   • Select 2×6 boards without warping or twisting, or the tabletop will be uneven; visually inspect each board on purchase.
   • Leg length 682mm = table height 720mm minus tabletop thickness 38mm; give actual measurements to avoid cutting errors.

   Sanding All Components

   Sand in order #120 → #180 → #240 grit sandpaper. For 2×6 boards used as the tabletop, sand especially carefully — repeatedly dampen surface to raise grain, dry completely, then finish with #240 to reduce staining when eating.

   • No splinters allowed on dining surfaces; check by running fingertip skin over surface.
   • Dampening then drying and re-sanding (wetting process) reduces raised grain after finishing.
   • Using an orbital sander saves time; consider rental services.

   • Omitting edge rounding causes fabric or skin snags, especially at child face height.
   • Sanding produces a lot of dust; do it in ventilated places like balconies or garages.
4. 4

   Pre-Assembly of Legs and Aprons (Frame Construction)

   Attach long and short apron boards on the outside of four legs, positioned 50mm down from the top end of the legs. Fix with two 75mm coarse-thread screws per joint. Confirm right angles at all four corners using a carpenter's square. A rectangular frame indicates success.

   Tip

   • Apron placement outside or inside the legs affects strength; outside looks better, inside gives sturdier tabletop contact.
   • Drill φ5mm pilot holes in apron boards before screwing to avoid leg splitting.

   • Driving 75mm screws without pilot holes easily splits 2×4 lumber.
   • Uneven grain or knot direction among legs causes inconsistent appearance.

   Frame Right Angle and Diagonal Check

   Place assembled frame on a flat floor, confirm all four legs touch the floor (check for wobble). Measure both inner diagonal lengths with tape measures and verify error within 2mm. If off, loosen screws then adjust frame by clamping along diagonal, retighten screws.

   Tabletop Assembly

   Arrange nine 2×6 boards for tabletop on a workbench, aligning wood grain direction. Insert 3mm thick chopsticks between boards to create gaps (allow wood expansion). Attach two 2×4 reinforcing rails underneath with wood glue and 45mm coarse-thread screws to unify tabletop.

   Tip

   • Alternate core directions (growth rings) of boards to counter warp and cracking.
   • Rails positioned 200mm inside from tabletop edges; attaching at edges looks bad.
   • 45mm screws shorter than 38mm thickness to avoid penetration; confirm length with measurement.

   • Butting boards without gaps causes tabletop swelling and warping from moisture; always allow 3mm breathing space.
   • Misaligned rails cause warped tabletop; check right angles with a carpenter's square.
7. 7

   Fixing Tabletop to Frame

   Place tabletop on frame, check uniform overhang about 30mm on all sides. Drill φ5mm pilot holes from apron boards into tabletop underside, then drive 75mm coarse-thread screws. Fix with 4 screws on long aprons and 2 on short aprons (12 total).

   Tip

   • Overhang of 30-50mm won't obstruct dining actions.
   • Insert screws slightly towards apron inner edge, not centered, to reduce wood splitting.
   • Screw length limited to apron thickness plus 20mm to avoid penetrating tabletop.

   • Without pilot hole and countersink, 75mm screws may protrude on tabletop surface.
   • Overhang exceeding 50mm causes tabletop flex; ~30mm is ideal.

   Pre-Painting Surface Preparation

   Lightly sand entire table again with #240 sandpaper, remove dust with damp cloth before painting. For outdoor use, use water-based urethane varnish or wood preservatives like Xyladecor or Osmo Color. Use paints labeled 'Food Sanitation Law Compliant' for food-contact surfaces.

   First Coat Application

   Apply paint over entire table with brush in order: tabletop → aprons → legs → underside. Paint along the wood grain in one direction to prevent brush marks. For water-based urethane varnish, dry about 3 hours; for Xyladecor, soak 15-20 min and wipe off excess, dry 2 hours.

   • Apply thin coats twice with urethane varnish; thick coats cause bubbles and shrinkage.
   • For Xyladecor, wipe excess after soaking to avoid sticky finish after drying.

   • Drying near heating vents causes surface-dry but partially wet interiors; wait for natural drying.
10. 10

    Sanding Between Coats and Second Coat

    After first coat fully dries, gently sand surface with very fine #400 sandpaper (intermediate sanding). Remove dust then apply second coat, slightly thinner than first. For three coats to thicken film, repeat intermediate sanding before final coat.

    • #400 sanding only lightly buffs raised grain.
    • Two coats greatly improve waterproof and abrasion resistance; essential for dining tables.

    • Touching surface before drying causes fingerprints and dust inclusion; observe 24 hour drying.
11. 11

    Waiting for Complete Curing of Finish

    After painting is done, wait at least 72 hours without placing heavy items for complete curing. Water-based urethane varnish fully cures in about 1 week. Avoid meals or projects on table and lightly cover with cloth to prevent dust.

    • Curing times differ by paint type; follow can instructions precisely.
    • Check curing by lightly pressing surface with fingernail; no indentation indicates done.
    • Drying time varies with temperature: 3-4 days in summer, over a week in winter.

    • Placing hot pots prematurely melts finish and leaves marks.
    • Dropping dishes chips finish; be careful until full curing.
12. 12

    Attaching Leg Pads and Final Inspection

    Attach felt pads on bottoms of all four legs to prevent floor damage. Move table to installation site and check level with a level tool. Adjust pad thickness if wobble detected. Place chairs and sit to confirm knees do not hit apron boards.

    Tip
