Build steps

  1. 1

Final Check of Materials and Tools

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare two side boards of SPF lumber 1x10 (19×350×800mm), six shelf boards (19×350×500mm), one plywood back board (4mm thick, 500×800mm), sixteen 38mm coarse-thread screws, four 50mm L-shaped brackets. Tools required are electric driver, saw, measuring tape, carpenter's square, #120 and #240 sandpaper, level, two F-shaped clamps, brush and paint tray, stapler or finishing nails.

    Measure
    W 500 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 20

    Tip

    • SPF lumber tends to warp easily. Check each board for warp at purchase and select those with warp under 1mm.
    • L-shaped brackets and screws are the lifeline for preventing tipping. Do not omit them under any circumstances.

    Watch out

    • Check each SPF lumber board individually for warp, cracks, and knots before purchase. Using boards warped over 1mm causes shelf distortion.
    • The 4mm plywood back board is thin and easily damaged during moving. Stand it upright and store immediately after cutting.
  2. 2

    Securing the Workspace

    ≈ 10 min

Secure a workspace where an 800mm tall bookshelf can be assembled standing up. Ensure ceiling height is over 2200mm and floor area is approximately 1500×1200mm. Lay a blue tarp and use two sawhorses to support long materials.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 2 / 20

    Tip

    • Assembly is done lying on the floor; standing the shelf up only at the final step. This allows work even in narrow rooms.

    Watch out

    • Standing up the assembled bookshelf alone is difficult. Two people are safer.
    • If ceiling height is below 2000mm, the shelf will hit the ceiling when standing up. Check beforehand.
  3. 3

    Creating Cut List and Cutting

    ≈ 20 min

Submit the cut list to the home center: two side boards at 800mm, six shelf boards at 500mm, one back board at 500×800mm. If cutting by yourself, support the long lumber (800mm) on two sawhorses and cut by pulling the saw. Aim for cut accuracy within ±2mm.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 3 / 20

    Tip

    • Cutting fee is 30-50 yen per cut. Ordering all cuts costs around 1000 yen and reduces cutting time from 30 minutes to immediate.
    • Bundling the six same-dimension shelf boards for one cut yields the best accuracy.

    Watch out

    • 19mm thick SPF lumber warps easily even with straight cuts. Use guides to cut straight.
    • The 4mm plywood is soft and warps upward if unsupported during cutting. Support underneath.
  4. 4

    Sanding All Parts (#120 → #240)

    ≈ 40 min

Sand all parts first with #120 then with #240 sandpaper. Pay special attention to the shelf support surfaces on side boards, top and bottom surfaces of shelf boards, and end grain. Round shelf edges slightly for better handling. Vacuum to remove wood dust after sanding.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 4 / 20

    Tip

    • Finish shelf board surfaces smoothly for easy book handling.
    • End grain tends to raise fibers; start with #120 sandpaper carefully.

    Watch out

    • SPF lumber is soft; sanding too much distorts dimensions. Use #120 mainly and #240 only for finishing.
    • Rounding edges too much looks crude. Keep radius to about 2mm.
  5. 5

Marking Shelf Positions on Side Boards

    ≈ 15 min

Place two side boards side-by-side and mark pencil positions for six shelf levels. Shelf intervals are typically 300mm per level from bottom up (total 1800mm), or wider spacing at the top for decoration as per design. Clamp the boards together before marking to ensure identical shelf positions.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 5 / 20

    Tip

    • Clamp side boards together before marking for perfectly matching shelf positions.
    • Using common book sizes such as A4 (297mm), A5 (210mm), and bunko (150mm) as references simplifies shelf spacing.

    Watch out

    • Shelf positions on left and right sides misaligned cause slanted shelves. Clamping and marking together is essential.
    • Forgetting to account for 19mm shelf thickness results in narrower actual gaps.
  6. 6

    Preparing Pilot Holes

    ≈ 20 min

Drill 3mm diameter pilot holes at the marked positions. Drill from the outside of the side boards inward through the side board into the shelf board end grain. Use masking tape on the drill bit to mark depth. Aim to drill through the 19mm side board plus 10mm into the shelf board, totaling 29mm depth.

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 6 / 20

    Tip

    • 3mm pilot hole corresponds to approximately 70% of the 4.2mm shank diameter of 38mm coarse-thread screws, preventing wood splitting.
    • Check that each shelf has 2 pilot holes on left and right side boards, totaling 24 holes for 6 shelves.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient pilot hole depth prevents screws from penetrating fully; drill slightly deeper for safety.
    • Avoid drilling completely through the shelf board; use tape depth marker to prevent over-penetration.
  7. 7

Temporarily Attaching Shelf Boards to One Side Board

    ≈ 20 min

Lay one side board on the floor, stand the six shelf boards upright aligned at marked positions, and temporarily fix with F-clamps. Use a carpenter's square to confirm right angles between side board and shelf boards. Where the square cannot fit, visually confirm right angles.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 20

    Tip

    • Attach shelf boards from the bottom up for better stability.
    • One clamp per shelf board is ideal. If only two clamps available, clamp and fix shelves sequentially.

    Watch out

    • Fixing at incorrect right angles causes the bookshelf to become a parallelogram. Always check with carpenter's square.
    • If shelf boards protrude beyond the side board edges, fitting the back board later becomes impossible.
  8. 8

    Screwing One Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes from the outside of the side board into each shelf board end grain. Use two screws per shelf per side (12 screws total for six shelves). Screw heads should be flush with or recessed up to 0.5mm below the side board surface. Use moderate torque on the impact driver and finish by tightening by hand about a quarter turn.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 8 / 20

    Tip

    • Slightly stagger the two screws vertically to increase withdrawal strength.
    • If screw heads are visible, optionally fill with wood dowels to hide.

    Watch out

    • Over-tightening screws in 19mm thick SPF lumber causes end grain splitting. Use moderate torque.
    • When screws enter at an angle and protrude on the other side, remove and fill with wood putty before re-screwing at a correct position.
  9. 9

Preparing to Attach Opposite Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Stand the partially assembled bookshelf and position the second side board on the opposite side. Align the opposite ends of the six shelf boards to the marking on the side board and clamp temporarily. Confirm right angles in an upright position.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 9 / 20

    Tip

    • This step is recommended to be done by two people: one holds the assembly, the other clamps.
    • No re-marking of the side board lines is needed; original markings are sufficient.

    Watch out

    • Attempting alone risks shelf boards detaching and falling. Use two people or lean assembly against a wall during work.
  10. 10

    Screwing the Opposite Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes from the outside of the opposite side board into shelf board ends. Use two screws per shelf per side (12 screws total). Completing both sides secures all shelf boards and side boards, finishing the main bookshelf structure.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 10 / 20

    Tip

    • After both sides are fixed, check all shelf boards with a level for horizontality. If any shelf is tilted, loosen screws and adjust.
    • Screw one side fully per shelf level first, then the opposite side; avoid screwing both sides simultaneously to prevent distortion.

    Watch out

    • Screwing both sides simultaneously can cause distortion. Fix one side completely before the opposite.
  11. 11

Check Overall Level and Diagonal Measurements

    ≈ 15 min

Place the assembled bookshelf on the floor and use a level to check horizontality of each shelf board. Measure diagonals (top left to bottom right, top right to bottom left) from the front; confirm difference is within 5mm. If distorted, loosen clamps, adjust, and add screws to fix.

    Check level
    Level ✓
    LevelSTEP 11 / 20

    Tip

    • Diagonal difference over 5mm indicates parallelogram distortion. Correct before attaching back board.
    • Back board increases rigidity. Fix distortions before mounting back board.

    Watch out

    • Shelf boards sagging in center worsens under books' weight. Shelf length around 600mm is acceptable; consider reinforcement if exceeding 1000mm.
  12. 12

    Preparing to Attach Back Board

    ≈ 10 min

Place the 4mm plywood back board (500×800mm) on the back of the bookshelf and align corners. Confirm diagonal measurements match those of the bookshelf to finalize position (the back board corrects final distortion). Temporarily fix back board with masking tape.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 12 / 20

    Tip

    • Back board is crucial for rigidity. Attaching at a slight angle reduces strength.
    • The 4mm plywood can be easily fixed by stapler. If using nails, drill pilot holes beforehand.

    Watch out

    • If back board is larger than frame, cut off excess. If smaller, leave uniform gaps under 5mm around edges.
  13. 13

    Stapling Back Board

    ≈ 20 min

Fix the back board to side boards and shelf boards using a stapler (approximately 15mm staples) or fine nails. Attach staples/nails every 100-150mm around the perimeter and along shelf board positions. Start at corners and staple along diagonals sequentially to prevent distortion.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 13 / 20

    Tip

    • Staplers cost between 1500-2500 yen at home centers and are faster than nails; worthwhile investment for bookshelf making.
    • Mark back board at shelf positions with pencil before fixing to avoid missing staple/nail positions on shelf boards.

    Watch out

    • Staples that protrude inside the bookshelf can damage books. 15mm staples are suitable for 19mm thick lumber.
    • Stapling only around the back board perimeter without shelf positions causes the back board to lift if sagging occurs.
  14. 14

    Preparing to Attach L-shaped Brackets

    ≈ 15 min

Attach four 50mm L-shaped metal brackets: two on each side at the upper back of the bookshelf. One side attaches to the bookshelf top edge, the other side will be fixed to the wall. Use a stud sensor to locate wall studs before installation.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 14 / 20

    Tip

    • 100 yen shop stud sensors have low accuracy; a 1000-2000 yen version from a home center is recommended.
    • Wall studs are usually spaced at 455mm intervals; once one is found, estimate adjacent stud positions accordingly.

    Watch out

    • Drywall only without studs does not hold screws and cannot prevent tipping. Must fix into studs.
    • If bracket positions do not align with studs, shift brackets sideways to align screws with stud centers.
  15. 15

    Attaching L-shaped Brackets to Bookshelf

    ≈ 10 min

Attach four L-shaped brackets to the outside of the bookshelf upper side boards using 38mm coarse-thread screws in the bracket's standard screw holes. Fix brackets flush or with less than 5mm gap from the side board, ensuring brackets project perpendicularly to the wall side.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 15 / 20

    Tip

    • Install brackets so that the bent part faces the wall and screw holes face the bookshelf.
    • Use the level to ensure brackets are not installed at an angle to avoid gaps with the wall.

    Watch out

    • If brackets are installed crookedly, gaps may form between bracket and wall upon fixing. Check with level.
  16. 16

Setting Up Bookshelf and Securing to Wall

    ≈ 20 min

Move the bookshelf to its location standing up (recommended two people). Push firmly against the wall. Drive 45-50mm coarse-thread screws (included or separately obtained) through L-shaped bracket holes into wall studs. Secure all four locations to complete tipping prevention.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 16 / 20

    Tip

    • Use longer 45-50mm screws for wall side as 38mm screws are too short to reach studs.
    • Wall fixing is the most critical step for the bookshelf. Do not neglect to avoid injury or fatality during earthquakes.

    Watch out

    • Drywall anchors alone are insufficient for strength. Always screw into studs.
    • If gap between bookshelf and wall exceeds 5mm, insert shims before screw fixing. Gaps result in ineffective brackets.
  17. 17

    Pre-Finish Cleaning

    ≈ 10 min

Clean the entire bookshelf using a vacuum and dry cloth to remove wood dust, oils, and fingerprints completely. Cleaning quality before finishing affects final appearance greatly. Optionally, mask plywood back board before finishing as it absorbs stains quickly.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 17 / 20

    Tip

    • Wipe before finishing with a sequence: dry wipe, damp wipe, dry wipe for perfect cleaning.

    Watch out

    • Remaining wood dust causes rough finish surface. Check using directed lighting.
  18. 18

    First Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 40 min

Apply oil stain (such as Watco Oil or Kinura) evenly with a brush on all surfaces: side boards outside, shelf board tops, shelf board undersides, then back board. After 10-15 minutes, wipe off excess with a dry cloth. Use about 60-70% of total oil for this first coat as absorption is high.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 18 / 20

    Tip

    • Oil stain application sequence: apply, wait 10-15 minutes, then wipe off. Not wiping leaves sticky residue.
    • Brush widths of 30-50mm are suitable for bookshelf application; larger brushes do not reach detail areas.

    Watch out

    • Failure to wipe off causes stickiness lasting over a week; always wipe off.
    • Plywood back board absorbs quickly and tends to blotch; apply thinly and wipe carefully.
  19. 19

    Second Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 25 min

After drying 24 hours from the first coat, apply the second coat using about one-third to one-half the amount of the first. Wipe off excess as before. Two coats deepen color and enhance protection. Allow 24-48 hours for full drying.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 19 / 20

    Tip

    • Second coat corrects blotchiness of the first. Apply thinly and evenly.
    • Apply a third coat if deeper color is desired.

    Watch out

    • Do not skip wiping on second coat; thick layers cause blotches.
    • During drying, keep indoors to avoid dust and insects adhering.
  20. 20

    Completion, Use, and Inspection

    ≈ 15 min

After full drying (48 hours), place books and begin use. Heavy books should be placed on the bottom shelves and lighter ones on higher shelves for stability. After one week of use, recheck screws and L-bracket fixing and tighten as needed.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 20 / 20

    Tip

    • Concentrate heavy books such as encyclopedias on the lowest two shelves; use lightweight paperbacks higher up.
    • Reapply oil every 3-5 years to restore gloss and protective effect.

    Watch out

    • Placing books before 48 hours drying causes oil transfer to books; ensure full drying.
    • Books absorb moisture; place dehumidifiers during rainy season. Bookshelf materials may also warp from humidity.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
