Measure and Check Installation Location
≈ 15 minMeasure the installation space for the balcony planter stand (900×200×450mm). Confirm width of the space, ensure at least 600mm passage clearance, and verify door swing range.
MeasureW 900 mmMeasureSTEP 1 / 13Tip
- Position so it is not directly under rain gutters or over drainage areas.
- Maintain at least 20mm gap between wall and furniture for easier cleaning.
- Avoid placing on the edge between wooden decks or soil and the ground, as it causes instability.
Watch out
- Installation is impossible if space width is less than 900mm. Measuring beforehand is crucial.
- Outdoor installation locations often have heavy foot traffic. Protruding placements pose tripping hazards.
- 2
Create Cutting List for Components
≈ 30 minCut cedar 19mm thick into front and back boards (19×120×900mm) ×8 each, side boards (19×120×200mm) ×8 each. Prepare one bottom board of Lauan plywood 12mm (12×162×862mm). Cut four corner posts from 2x4 lumber (38×89×450mm). Utilizing a home center cutting service is convenient.
CutUse the in-store cut serviceCutSTEP 2 / 13Tip
- Cedar boards vary significantly due to knots and warping; select each board individually.
- The 450mm length for corner posts includes height for stacking four front/back boards (120×4=480mm) plus 20mm allowance.
- When using cutting services, you can align the wood grain direction for better appearance.
Watch out
- Cut edges of cedar absorb water easily. Apply more wood preservative in later steps.
- 2x4 lumber's actual dimension is 38×89mm; specify these dimensions clearly when requesting cuts (nominal vs actual size differs).
- 3
Sand All Components
≈ 40 minSand all parts starting with #120 then #240 grit sandpaper. Cedar is soft and prone to warping and splinters, so carefully sand ends and surfaces. Chamfer corner posts to avoid catching shoes or injuries by making edges smooth.
Sand#120SandSTEP 3 / 13Tip
- Cedar grain is coarse; sand along grain to prevent raising splinters.
- Sand cut ends flat with #120 first, then smooth with #240. Skipping this causes uneven paint absorption.
- Using an orbital sander can reduce sanding time to one-third; rental services are available.
Watch out
- Sanding produces a lot of dust; perform outdoors like on balcony or garage with ventilation.
- Do not paint before removing dust thoroughly; otherwise paint will feel rough. Use air duster or damp cloth to clean.
- 4
Stand Up and Temporarily Fix Corner Posts
≈ 25 minStand the four 2x4 posts vertically and position at four corners of the workbench. Clamp them temporarily for leveling, and check verticality with a level. Measure spacing to maintain 600mm front-to-back and 300mm left-to-right inner dimensions with a measuring tape.
Build the frameTighten joints firmlyAssembleSTEP 4 / 13Tip
- Check verticality using a level on two faces (front and side) aiming both at zero deviation.
- Use plywood sheets on uneven concrete floor or cushioned floor to create a flat work surface.
- Align the knots on all four posts in the same direction for a better look; rotate posts during arrangement.
Watch out
- If even one post is not vertical, front, back, and side boards will be tilted when finished.
- Be consistent measuring inner or outer edges of posts for spacing; a difference of 5–10mm can occur if mixed.
- 5
Attach Front and Back Boards (From Bottom)
≈ 40 minPlace the first cedar board horizontally at the bottom front side, apply wood glue on the two corner posts, and fix with 65mm coarse-thread screws — two per post (four screws per board). For following boards, insert 5mm ventilation gaps (about the thickness of one chopstick) between boards. Mount 5 boards on the front and 5 on the back, total 10.
Build the frameTighten joints firmlyAssembleSTEP 5 / 13Tip
- 5mm ventilation gaps prevent shoe moisture buildup; sealing boards causes mold.
- Use chopsticks to maintain even gaps.
- Drill 4mm pilot holes near corner posts before screwing to avoid wood splitting.
Watch out
- Without pilot holes, 65mm screws can split the cedar boards; always pre-drill.
- Do not overdrive screws; screw heads should be flush with the wood surface.
- 6
Attach Side Boards (Left and Right)
≈ 35 minAttach the side boards (19×120×200mm) on both sides similarly with ventilation gaps. Attach five boards per side. Adjust front and back board positions first to ensure side boards meet corners flush. Measure diagonals of the box and make sure both diagonals are equal for squareness, adjusting while fixing.
Build the frameTighten joints firmlyAssembleSTEP 6 / 13Tip
- If diagonal lengths differ, the frame becomes a parallelogram and is distorted; use clamps to correct until equal.
- Side boards sit inside the front and back boards; offset pilot holes slightly inward from front/back board edges.
- For neat corners, cutting corner material at 45 degrees prior to fixing can improve finish.
Watch out
- Mismatched ventilation slit alignment between side and front/back boards looks untidy.
- More than 5mm diagonal difference causes difficulty fitting storage items.
- 7
Process and Attach Bottom Board
≈ 25 minDrill nine equally spaced 20mm ventilation holes (3 rows × 3 columns) into the 12mm Lauan plywood bottom board. Keep holes at least 50mm away from edges and at least 100mm apart. Insert the bottom board under the box and fix with 45mm coarse-thread screws to the four posts.
Drill a hole下穴 φ3.5mmDrillSTEP 7 / 13Tip
- Ventilation holes are important for shoe moisture escape; do not reduce hole count.
- Use a hole saw for neat holes; wood drill bits are also acceptable.
- Since the bottom faces the ground and is not visible, edge tapes are not necessary.
Watch out
- If bottom board is warped, it won't rest properly against posts. Confirm flatness first. If warped, reverse orientation and screw to flatten.
- Drilling holes too close (less than 50mm) to edge reduces board strength.
- 8
Final Check of Right Angles and Diagonal Lengths
≈ 15 minCheck the assembled box's right angles and diagonal lengths. Measure all four internal corners with a carpenter's square and verify deviation from 90°. Measure both diagonals with a tape measure, ensuring difference is within 2mm. If misaligned, loosen screws, clamp to correct, then tighten screws again.
InspectNo wobble ✓InspectSTEP 8 / 13Tip
- Diagonal difference indicates assembly accuracy; within 2mm is acceptable for practical use.
- Level floor is necessary to get accurate measurements.
- Check all screws by hand to confirm that none are loose or partially inserted.
Watch out
- Ignoring frame distortion causes hindered door (lid) operation.
- Loose screws risk wobbling or structural failure under shoe weight.
- 9
Prepare Surface and Sand Lightly Before Painting
≈ 15 minBefore painting, lightly sand entire surface with #240 grit sandpaper and remove dust with a damp cloth. Smooth out unevenness around screw heads and cut ends. For outdoor use, preservatives like Xyladecor or Osmo Color are practical options.
Sand#240SandSTEP 9 / 13Tip
- Cedar absorbs paint heavily; two coats are necessary.
- Apply extra paint to cut ends as fibers are exposed and absorbent.
- Apply Xyladecor by rubbing with cloth instead of brushing for uniform finish.
Watch out
- Rough sanding leads to paint streaks and raised fibers.
- Painting without dust removal causes rough surface.
- 10
First Coat of Paint
≈ 30 minApply Xyladecor or water-based paint evenly over entire surface. Paint along wood grain in one direction using a brush or rag, let it penetrate for 15-20 minutes, then wipe off excess with a dry cloth. Paint ventilation gaps by angling brush to avoid missing areas. Let dry naturally for at least 2 hours.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 10 / 13Tip
- The 'coat and wipe' method of Xyladecor enhances wood texture.
- Paint accumulation in ventilation gaps slows drying; wipe off excess.
- For outdoor painting, ensure good ventilation; open windows to reduce vapors.
Watch out
- Omitting wiping leaves tackiness for several days.
- Applying thick coats causes uneven drying and later peeling; thin two-coat applications are key.
- 11
Intermediate Sanding and Second Coat
≈ 25 minAfter the first coat dries, lightly sand the surface with #320 grit sandpaper (intermediate sanding). Remove dust, then apply the second coat thinner than first. Wipe off excess similarly. Allow 24 hours to fully cure.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 11 / 13Tip
- Intermediate sanding smooths paint fuzz without removing the coat.
- Two coats greatly improve wood preservative effect; do not skip.
- Keep drying area dust-free.
Watch out
- Over-sanding can remove first coat.
- Skipping second coat halves preservative protection, especially important for outdoor exposure.
- 12
Apply Leg Pads and Waterproofing Measures
≈ 15 minAttach felt pads or anti-slip rubber pads to bottom ends of corner posts. When placing directly on the ground, elevate by 10cm using bricks or blocks. For tile surfaces, select silicone pads to prevent slipping.
Fix to the wallAnchor to studsInstallSTEP 12 / 13Tip
- Felt pads absorb water and get dirty; rubber or silicone is recommended for outdoor spots.
- Pads on all four corner posts are essential; omitting in the center causes tilting.
- Observe for one week after installation; continue ventilating to dissipate paint vapors.
Watch out
- Without pads, floors can get scratched and wet floors become slippery.
- Some silicone pads have weak adhesive; use strong double-sided tape for security in commercially available products.
- 13
Final Inspection and Shoe Storage
≈ 15 minCheck tightness of all screws, uniformity of ventilation slits, and paint finish. Use a level to inspect any wobble; adjust pad thickness as needed for leveling. Avoid placing heavy objects for a week until paint fully cures. Store shoes only when dry.
Done!Done — nice work!DoneSTEP 13 / 13Tip
- Wipe wet shoes dry with cloth before storing to prevent moisture buildup.
- Store shoes up to 80% of capacity; overcrowding impedes ventilation.
- Monthly airing (remove all shoes and dry with fan) prolongs furniture life.
Watch out
- Placing wet shoes before paint cures leaves shoe-shaped marks.
- Overloading and forcing shoes in deforms boards.
Warnings
- ⚠️When used outdoors, wood preservative coating is essential (reapply annually recommended).
- ⚠️Use stainless steel screws (iron screws will rust).
- ⚠️Drill pilot holes before screwing to prevent wood splitting.
