Build steps

  1. 1

Final Check of Materials and Tools

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare two side panels (SPF lumber 1x10, 19×300×1800mm), six shelf boards (19×300×1200mm), one 4mm plywood back panel (1200×1800mm), 48 coarse-thread screws 38mm, and four 50mm L-shaped brackets. Tools include electric driver, saw, measuring tape, carpenter's square, #120 and #240 sandpaper, level, two F-type clamps, brush and paint tray, and a stapler or fine nails.

    Measure
    W 1200 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 20

    Tip

    • SPF lumber tends to warp. Inspect each piece at purchase and select those with warping under 1mm.
    • L-shaped brackets and screws are crucial for preventing tipping. Do not omit them.

    Watch out

    • Check each SPF board for warping, cracks, and knots before purchase. Using lumber with more than 1mm warp will cause shelf distortion.
    • The 4mm plywood back panel is thin and fragile; handle carefully after cutting to avoid bending or breaking.
  2. 2

    Securing the Workspace

    ≈ 10 min

Ensure a workspace tall enough (ceiling height 2200mm or more) to stand the 1800mm bookshelf upright. Prepare floor space approximately 1500×1200mm. Lay a blue sheet and use two saw horses to support long materials.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 2 / 20

    Tip

    • Assembly is done with the bookshelf laid flat on the floor; standing it upright is the final step. Even small rooms can be used for assembly.

    Watch out

    • Standing the assembled bookshelf upright is difficult for one person. Two people are recommended for safety.
    • Ceilings under 2000mm height may obstruct standing the bookshelf up. Verify beforehand.
  3. 3

Create Cutting List and Submit Cutting Request

    ≈ 20 min

Submit a cutting list to the home center for two side panels (1800mm), six shelf boards (1200mm), and one back panel (1200×1800mm). If cutting yourself, support long lumber on two saw horses and cut with a push cut. Aim for cutting tolerance within ±2mm.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 3 / 20

    Tip

    • Cutting fees range from 30-50 yen per cut. Having all cuts done can save about 30 mins of your time, completing immediately.
    • Bundle the six shelf boards for a single cut to maximize accuracy.

    Watch out

    • SPF lumber 19mm thick warps easily even with straight cuts; use a guide to cut straight.
    • 4mm plywood is soft and bends during cutting if not well supported underneath.
  4. 4

    Sanding All Components (#120 → #240)

    ≈ 40 min

Sand all components starting with #120 grit then finishing with #240 grit. Pay special attention to shelf support surfaces on side panels, both faces and edges of shelf boards, and cut edges. Rounding shelf edges improves usability. Vacuum thoroughly to remove sawdust after sanding.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 4 / 20

    Tip

    • A smooth shelf surface makes placing and removing books easier.
    • Cut edges raise wood fibers; start sanding these areas with #120 grit carefully.

    Watch out

    • SPF is soft; excessive sanding alters dimensions. Use #120 for basic sanding and #240 only for finishing.
    • Over-rounding edges looks clumsy; limit rounding radius to about 2mm.
  5. 5

Mark Shelf Positions on Side Panels

    ≈ 15 min

Place the two side panels side by side and mark with pencil the positions for six shelves. Use 300mm intervals from bottom upwards (6 tiers for total height 1800mm) or design with wider upper decorative spacing. Clamp the two panels together and mark simultaneously to ensure identical shelf positions.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 5 / 20

    Tip

    • Clamping both side panels before marking ensures perfect alignment of shelf positions.
    • Use standard book heights—A4 (297mm), A5 (210mm), bunkobon (150mm)—to decide shelf spacing suitable for storage.

    Watch out

    • Misaligned shelves cause shelf boards to tilt. Mark together with side panels clamped.
    • Ignoring the 19mm shelf board thickness when calculating spacing results in narrower actual space.
  6. 6

    Prepare Pilot Holes

    ≈ 20 min

Drill 3mm diameter pilot holes at marked positions, from outside of side panel towards shelf board edges, passing through the side panel and about 10mm into the shelf board (total depth about 29mm). Use masking tape on drill bit as depth stop.

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 6 / 20

    Tip

    • 3mm pilot hole diameter is about 70% of the coarse-thread screw 38mm (4.2mm shaft), effectively preventing wood splitting.
    • Each shelf board requires four pilot holes (two on each side panel) × 6 shelves = 24 holes. Check to avoid omissions.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient pilot hole depth causes screws not to reach properly; drill slightly deeper for safety.
    • Avoid drilling completely through the shelf board by limiting depth with tape stops.
  7. 7

Temporarily Fix Shelf Boards to One Side Panel

    ≈ 20 min

Lay one side panel flat on floor, stand six shelf boards aligned to pencil marks, and temporarily clamp them with F-type clamps. Use a carpenter's square to confirm side panel and shelf boards are at right angles. Visually check areas where square cannot be inserted.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 20

    Tip

    • Start fixing shelves from the bottom up for stability.
    • Ideally use six clamps (one per shelf); if limited to two clamps, proceed sequentially.

    Watch out

    • Fixing without ensuring right angles causes the structure to skew into a parallelogram. Always check with square.
    • Shelf boards protruding beyond the side panel edge prevent proper back panel fitting.
  8. 8

Drive Screws on One Side Panel

    ≈ 15 min

Drive coarse-thread screws 38mm into pilot holes from outside of side panel to shelf board edges—two screws per shelf board position for six shelves (12 screws total). Screw heads should be flush or recessed 0.5mm into side panel. Use medium torque on impact driver and finish tightening manually with quarter turn.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 8 / 20

    Tip

    • Offsetting two screws slightly vertically improves pull-out strength.
    • If screw head holes are conspicuous, optionally fill with wood dowels later.

    Watch out

    • Over-tightening screws may split 19mm SPF lumber at edges; use medium torque.
    • If screws enter at an angle and protrude, remove, fill hole with wood putty, and re-screw in a new position.
  9. 9

Prepare to Attach Opposite Side Panel

    ≈ 15 min

With shelf boards fixed to one side panel and structure upright, position the second side panel aligning shelf board ends to pencil marks, and clamp temporarily. Confirm right angle while the assembly is vertical.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 9 / 20

    Tip

    • Two-person operation recommended: one holds assembly, one clamps for accuracy.
    • Pencil lines on the second side panel were marked earlier; do not redraw.

    Watch out

    • Working alone risks shelf boards falling off and damaging floor; always work with two people or lean the assembly against a wall.
  10. 10

Drive Screws on Opposite Side Panel

    ≈ 15 min

Drive coarse-thread screws 38mm through pilot holes from outside of the opposite side panel into shelf boards—two screws per shelf board position for six shelves (12 screws total). This completes the main structural assembly of side panels and shelf boards.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 10 / 20

    Tip

    • After both sides are fixed, check shelf boards level with a level. If any shelf is tilted, loosen screws and adjust before retightening.

    Watch out

    • Driving screws simultaneously on both sides causes distortion; fully screw one side first, then the other.
  11. 11

Check Overall Level and Diagonal Measurements

    ≈ 15 min

Place the assembled bookshelf on the floor and check shelf boards for level using a level. Measure diagonal distances (top-left to bottom-right and top-right to bottom-left) to confirm the difference is within 5mm. Adjust distortion by loosening clamps and adding screws as needed.

    Check level
    Level ✓
    LevelSTEP 11 / 20

    Tip

    • Diagonal difference over 5mm indicates a parallelogram shape. Correct before attaching back panel.
    • Back panel increases rigidity; fix all distortions before back panel installation.

    Watch out

    • Shelf board sag (center dip) may worsen under book weight. Shelf length up to 600mm is acceptable; for over 1000mm consider reinforcement.
  12. 12

    Prepare for Back Panel Installation

    ≈ 10 min

Place the 4mm plywood back panel on the backside of the bookshelf, aligning corners and confirming diagonal lengths match the bookshelf. Fix the panel temporarily with masking tape. Proper back panel fitting corrects residual distortion.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 12 / 20

    Tip

    • Back panel is critical for rigidity; misaligned installation reduces strength.
    • Staples or fine nails easily fix 4mm plywood. Drill pilot holes when using nails.

    Watch out

    • If back panel is larger than bookshelf, trim excess; if smaller, maintain uniform 5mm or less gap around edges.
  13. 13

    Staple Back Panel in Place

    ≈ 20 min

Fasten the back panel to side panels and shelf boards using a stapler (15mm staples) or fine nails at intervals of 100-150mm around perimeter and at shelf board locations. Start from corners and proceed along diagonals to minimize distortion.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 13 / 20

    Tip

    • Staplers costing 1500-2500 yen are faster than nails and worth the investment for bookshelf project.
    • Mark shelf locations on back panel with pencil before fastening to avoid missing spots.

    Watch out

    • Staples piercing through the back side may scratch books; 15mm staples suit 19mm boards.
    • Fasten only along edges and shelf locations to prevent back panel sagging.
  14. 14

    Prepare to Attach L-shaped Brackets

    ≈ 15 min

Attach four 50mm L-shaped brackets at upper back left and right corners (two per side). One side brackets attach to shelf top edge, the other side to wall studs, which should be located using a stud finder beforehand.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 14 / 20

    Tip

    • Cheap stud finders from 100 yen stores lack accuracy; home center models (1000-2000 yen) are recommended.
    • Wall studs typically spaced at 455mm increments; detecting one helps approximate neighboring stud locations.

    Watch out

    • Drywall alone cannot hold screws firmly; always mount into studs for tipping prevention.
    • If bracket positions do not align with studs, adjust brackets laterally to center screws on studs.
  15. 15

    Attach L-shaped Brackets to Bookshelf

    ≈ 10 min

Fix four L-shaped brackets to the bookshelf's upper side panels’ outer surfaces using coarse-thread screws 38mm through bracket holes. Brackets should be flush or slightly (<5mm) offset and protrude perpendicularly for wall attachment.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 15 / 20

    Tip

    • Ensure the bracket bend faces the wall with screw holes facing bookshelf side.
    • Use a level to avoid attaching brackets at an angle.

    Watch out

    • Tilted bracket installation creates gaps against the wall, reducing effectiveness.
  16. 16

Set Up Bookshelf and Secure to Wall

    ≈ 20 min

Move the bookshelf into position (two people recommended). Place it flush against the wall. Secure the L-shaped brackets to wall studs using 45-50mm coarse-thread screws through bracket wall-side holes. Secure all four points to complete tipping prevention.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 16 / 20

    Tip

    • Wall-side screws should be longer (45-50mm) than bookshelf screws (38mm) to reach studs.
    • Wall securing is the most critical step for earthquake safety; do not compromise.

    Watch out

    • Drywall anchors alone lack strength. Always fix into studs.
    • If there is more than 5mm gap between wall and bookshelf, insert shims before fixing to avoid ineffective brackets.
  17. 17

    Clean Before Painting

    ≈ 10 min

Thoroughly clean the entire bookshelf with a vacuum and dry cloth to remove wood dust, oils, and fingerprints. Cleaning quality significantly affects the finish. Optionally mask the plywood back panel before painting as it absorbs paint quickly.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 17 / 20

    Tip

    • Clean by wiping in the order: dry wipe → wet wipe → dry wipe for best results.

    Watch out

    • Remaining dust causes uneven surface texture after finishing. Inspect with proper lighting.
  18. 18

Apply First Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 40 min

Brush Watco Oil or similar oil stain evenly across the bookshelf: side panel outer surfaces, shelf board fronts, shelf board undersides, then back panel. After 10-15 minutes, wipe off excess with dry cloth. Use about 60-70% of total oil amount on first coating.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 18 / 20

    Tip

    • The process is brush oil → wait 10-15 minutes → wipe off excess. Leaving oil un-wiped causes stickiness.
    • Brush width between 30-50mm is ideal for bookshelf work; bigger brushes miss details.

    Watch out

    • Forgetting to wipe causes stickiness lasting over a week.
    • Plywood back panel absorbs quickly and tends to blotch; apply thinly and wipe carefully.
  19. 19

Apply Second Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 25 min

After the first coat dries 24 hours, apply a second coat with 30-50% of the first coat’s amount, then wipe off excess. Two coats deepen color and improve protection. Allow 24-48 hours for final drying.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 19 / 20

    Tip

    • Second coat evens out color variegation from the first coat; apply thin and uniform layers.
    • Apply a third coat if a darker finish is desired.

    Watch out

    • Forgetting to wipe on second coat causes blotchy finish.
    • Keep drying bookshelf indoors to avoid dust and insects during curing.
  20. 20

    Completion, Start Use, and Inspection

    ≈ 15 min

After fully drying the oil (48 hours), place books and begin use. Place heavy books on bottom shelves and lighter ones on upper shelves for stability. After one week of use, recheck screw tightness and L-shaped bracket fixings and retighten if necessary.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 20 / 20

    Tip

    • Concentrate heavy books like encyclopedias on the bottom two shelves; use paperback novels on top to reduce weight.
    • Recoat with oil every 3-5 years to refresh gloss and protection.

    Watch out

    • Placing books immediately after finish may transfer oil to books. Always dry at least 48 hours.
    • Books absorb moisture; use dehumidifiers during rainy season to avoid bookshelf warping due to humidity.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
