Build steps

  1. 1

Final check of lumber and tools

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare two side boards of SPF lumber 1x10 (19×300×2100 mm), six shelf boards (19×300×1200 mm), one plywood back panel (4 mm thick, 1200×2100 mm), 56 coarse-thread screws 38 mm, four L brackets 50 mm. Tools include an electric screwdriver, saw, measuring tape, carpenter's square, #120/#240 sandpaper, level, two F clamps, paintbrush and paint tray, and a stapler or fine nails.

    Measure
    W 1200 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 20

    Tip

    • SPF lumber tends to warp; check each piece upon purchase visually and select ones with warping within 1 mm.
    • L brackets and screws are crucial safety components to prevent tipping over; do not omit them.

    Watch out

    • Check each SPF board carefully for warp, cracks, and knots before purchase; assembling warped lumber (>1 mm) will cause shelf distortion.
    • The 4 mm plywood back panel is thin and easily breaks when moved; stand it upright immediately after cutting to manage.
  2. 2

    Secure work space

    ≈ 10 min

Prepare a work area where you can stand the 2100 mm tall bookshelf upright. Ceiling height should be 2200 mm or more, and floor space about 1500×1200 mm is sufficient. Lay a blue sheet and place two sawhorses to support long lumber.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 2 / 20

    Tip

    • Assembly is performed lying on the floor; raising it upright is the final step. Can work even in small rooms.

    Watch out

    • Standing the finished bookshelf upright is difficult alone; two people for safety.
    • If ceiling height is less than 2000 mm, the top will hit the ceiling when standing it up; check beforehand.
  3. 3

Create cut list and request cutting

    ≈ 20 min

Submit a cut list for two side boards (2100 mm), six shelf boards (1200 mm), and one back panel (1200×2100 mm) to the home center. If cutting yourself, support the 2100 mm lumber on two sawhorses for straight cuts aiming for ±2 mm accuracy.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 3 / 20

    Tip

    • Cutting costs about 30-50 yen per cut; total around 1000 yen and reduces cutting time from 30 minutes to immediate.
    • Since six shelf boards are the same length, bundling them for a single cut yields greatest accuracy.

    Watch out

    • SPF lumber 19 mm thick warps easily even on straight cuts; use a guide to cut straight.
    • 4 mm plywood is soft and warps during cutting if not supported from below.
  4. 4

Sand all lumber (#120 then #240)

    ≈ 40 min

Sand all lumber starting with #120 then finishing with #240 sandpaper. Be especially thorough on side boards at shelf support areas, both surfaces of shelf boards, and cut ends. Round shelf edges that contact hands slightly for ease of use. After sanding, vacuum completely to remove sawdust.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 4 / 20

    Tip

    • Smooth shelf board surfaces enable easy book insertion/removal.
    • Cut ends have raised fibers; begin sanding from #120 grit.

    Watch out

    • SPF lumber is soft; sanding too much alters dimensions. Use #120 mainly and #240 only for finishing.
    • Over-rounding edges looks crude; keep the radius around 2 mm.
  5. 5

Mark shelf positions on side boards

    ≈ 15 min

Place the two side boards together and mark pencil lines for six shelf positions. Shelf spacing is typically 300 mm per shelf from bottom for a total height of 1800 mm or can vary at top for decorative wider spacing. Mark both side boards simultaneously so positions exactly match.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 5 / 20

    Tip

    • Clamp the two side boards together before marking to ensure shelf positions align perfectly.
    • Set shelf intervals based on common book heights: A4 (297 mm), A5 (210 mm), Bunkobon size (150 mm) for practical storage.

    Watch out

    • Mismatched shelf positions cause shelves to be crooked; marking both boards together is essential.
    • Not accounting for shelf board thickness (19 mm) in spacing will make the actual usable space narrower.
  6. 6

    Prepare pilot holes

    ≈ 20 min

Drill 3 mm pilot holes at the marked shelf board positions. Drill from the outside of the side board toward the shelf board end grain, passing through the 19 mm side board and 10 mm into the shelf board for a total depth around 29 mm. Use masking tape on drill bit to set depth.

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 6 / 20

    Tip

    • 3 mm pilot hole is about 70% diameter of the coarse-thread 38 mm screw’s shaft (4.2 mm), preventing wood splitting.
    • Each shelf uses 4 holes on both side boards (2 per side) totaling 24 holes; check none are missed.

    Watch out

    • If pilot holes are not deep enough, screws won’t fully drive in; drill slightly deeper to be safe.
    • Avoid drilling clear through shelf boards' opposite side; use tape to limit drill depth.
  7. 7

Temporarily attach shelf boards to one side board

    ≈ 20 min

Lay one side board flat, stand six shelf boards at marked positions, and clamp them using F clamps. Use a carpenter's square to confirm right angles between side board and shelves, visually check areas where square can't reach.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 20

    Tip

    • Assemble from bottom shelf upwards for stability.
    • One clamp per shelf board is ideal (6 total) for easier work; if limited, clamp sequentially in sets of two.

    Watch out

    • If angle is incorrect when clamping, the entire frame will become a parallelogram; always check with a carpenter's square.
    • Shelf boards extending beyond side board edges prevent attachment of back panel later.
  8. 8

Screw shelf boards on one side board

    ≈ 15 min

Drive coarse-thread 38 mm screws through pilot holes from outside side board into shelf board ends. Use 2 screws per shelf position for all 6 shelves (12 screws). Screw heads should be flush or recessed 0.5 mm below side board surface. Use medium torque on impact driver; finish tightening by hand with a quarter turn.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 8 / 20

    Tip

    • Offset the two screws slightly vertically to increase pull-out strength.
    • If screw holes are visible, wood dowels can later fill and hide screw heads (optional).

    Watch out

    • Over-tightening screws in 19 mm SPF lumber can split the wood; stop at medium torque.
    • If screw drives in crooked and pierces opposite side, remove, fill with wood filler, and re-screw at a different spot.
  9. 9

Prepare for attachment of opposite side board

    ≈ 15 min

Stand the partial assembly upright, hold the second side board against the opposite shelf board sides aligning pencil marks, and clamp temporarily. With the bookshelf fully upright, check right angles thoroughly.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 9 / 20

    Tip

    • This step is recommended for two-person work: one holds position, one clamps for accuracy.
    • The opposite side board’s pencil marks were made earlier; do not redraw.

    Watch out

    • Forcing this step alone risks dropping shelves; always use two people or support assembly against wall.
  10. 10

Screw shelf boards to opposite side board

    ≈ 15 min

Drive coarse-thread 38 mm screws through pilot holes from outside of the other side board into shelf board ends, using 2 screws per shelf position for all 6 shelves (12 screws). This completes the main structure fixing.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 10 / 20

    Tip

    • After both sides are fixed, check shelf level with level. If any shelf is tilted, loosen screws and adjust.
    • Do not screw both sides simultaneously to avoid distortion; fix one side fully before the other.

    Watch out

    • Screwing both sides simultaneously causes warping.
  11. 11

Check overall level and diagonal measurements

    ≈ 15 min

Place the assembled bookshelf on the floor and check level of each shelf with a level. Measure diagonals (top left to bottom right and top right to bottom left) with a tape measure and confirm differences within 5 mm. If distorted, loosen clamps, adjust frame, and add screws to fix.

    Check level
    Level ✓
    LevelSTEP 11 / 20

    Tip

    • Diagonal difference over 5 mm indicates parallelogram distortion; correct before attaching back panel.
    • Back panel adds rigidity; fix distortions before installation.

    Watch out

    • Shelf boards sagging in center worsens under books’ weight; shelf length 600 mm is acceptable, longer than 1000 mm may require reinforcement.
  12. 12

    Prepare to attach back panel

    ≈ 10 min

Position 4 mm plywood back panel (1200×2100 mm) against bookshelf back aligning all corners and verifying diagonals match, allowing final distortion correction. Temporarily secure back panel lightly with masking tape.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 12 / 20

    Tip

    • Back panel is critical for resistance to deformation; if mounted slightly skewed, rigidity drops.
    • 4 mm plywood is easily fixed using a stapler; when using fine nails, drill pilot holes first.

    Watch out

    • If back panel is larger than bookshelf, trim excess; if smaller, allow uniform 5 mm gaps at edges.
  13. 13

    Staple back panel

    ≈ 20 min

Attach back panel to side boards and shelves using a stapler with 15 mm staples or fine nails. Space staples or nails every 100-150 mm along perimeter and shelf positions. Start at corners and work diagonally to avoid distortion.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 13 / 20

    Tip

    • Staplers cost 1500-2500 yen at hardware stores, faster than nails; worth investing for bookshelf making.
    • Mark shelf positions on back panel with pencil before fastening to avoid missing spots.

    Watch out

    • Staple legs protruding inside bookshelf can scratch books; 15 mm length staples suit 19 mm lumber.
    • Fasten only the back panel edges and shelf board lines; otherwise back panel may warp when bowed.
  14. 14

    Prepare to install L brackets

    ≈ 15 min

Attach four 50 mm L brackets to the upper rear corners of side boards (two each side). One bracket side attaches to bookshelf top edge, other side to wall. Confirm wall stud positions with a stud sensor.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 14 / 20

    Tip

    • Cheap stud sensors from 100-yen shops lack accuracy; hardware store models (1000-2000 yen) are recommended.
    • Studs are usually spaced at 455 mm centers; finding one helps locate adjacent studs.

    Watch out

    • Fixing only to drywall without studs won’t prevent tipping.
    • Adjust bracket lateral position so screws hit stud center if brackets don't align initially.
  15. 15

    Attach L brackets to bookshelf

    ≈ 10 min

Fix four L brackets to bookshelf side boards at the top rear using coarse-thread 38 mm screws in bracket holes. Brackets should be flush or up to 5 mm raised from side board, extending perpendicularly for wall fixing.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 15 / 20

    Tip

    • Ensure bracket bend faces wall side, screw holes face bookshelf side.
    • Use a level to avoid brackets fastening at an angle causing gaps at wall.

    Watch out

    • Brackets installed crooked cause gaps between wall and bracket when fixing wall.
  16. 16

Set up bookshelf and secure to wall

    ≈ 20 min

Two-person lift and place bookshelf at its location, snug against wall. Using coarse-thread 45-50 mm screws (included or purchased) screw through L bracket wall side holes into studs. Secure all four points to complete tip-over prevention.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 16 / 20

    Tip

    • 38 mm screws are too short to reach studs; use 45-50 mm screws for wall attachment.
    • Securing bookshelf to wall is the most important step; skip at your own risk of injury during earthquakes.

    Watch out

    • Drywall anchors alone lack strength; always screw into wall studs.
    • If gaps larger than 5 mm exist between bookshelf and wall, use shims before fixing; loose gaps render brackets ineffective.
  17. 17

    Clean before finishing

    ≈ 10 min

Vacuum bookshelf thoroughly and wipe with dry cloth to remove all sawdust, oil, and fingerprints before finishing. Cleanliness greatly affects finish quality. Optionally mask plywood back panel due to its high paint absorption.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 17 / 20

    Tip

    • For perfect cleaning, wipe sequence: dry wipe, damp wipe, dry wipe again.

    Watch out

    • Remaining sawdust causes rough finish surface; check by shining a light onto wood.
  18. 18

Apply first coat of oil stain

    ≈ 40 min

Brush oil stain (Watco Oil, Kinura, etc.) evenly over entire bookshelf: side board outsides, shelf board tops, shelf board undersides, back panel in that order. After 10-15 minutes, wipe away excess with dry cloth. Use about 60-70% of total (first application absorbs more).

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 18 / 20

    Tip

    • Oil stain application steps: apply, wait 10-15 minutes, wipe off excess to avoid tackiness.
    • Use 30-50 mm wide brush for bookshelf work; too large prevents detail coverage.

    Watch out

    • Failure to wipe excess leaves stickiness lasting over a week.
    • Plywood back panel absorbs rapidly and unevenly; thin coats and careful wiping needed.
  19. 19

Apply second coat of oil stain

    ≈ 25 min

After 24 hours drying of first coat, apply second coat with 1/3 to 1/2 quantity of first. Remember to wipe off excess as before. Two coats deepen color and improve protection. Dry completely 24-48 hours.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 19 / 20

    Tip

    • Second coat corrects uneven colors from first; apply thin, even layer across all surfaces.
    • Add a third coat if a darker color is desired.

    Watch out

    • Do not forget to wipe off excess again; heavy layers cause uneven finish.
    • Keep indoors dust- and insect-free during drying.
  20. 20

    Completion, start use, and inspection

    ≈ 15 min

After full oil dry time of 48 hours, place books and start use. Arrange heavy books on lower shelves, lighter on upper shelves for balance and stability. After one week of use, inspect screws for looseness and retighten brackets as needed.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 20 / 20

    Tip

    • Place heavy books (encyclopedias, etc.) mainly on bottom two shelves.
    • Reapply oil every 3-5 years to restore gloss and protection.

    Watch out

    • Putting books on immediately can transfer oil to them; wait full 48 hours drying.
    • Books absorb moisture, so place dehumidifiers in humid seasons. Wood may warp with humidity.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
