Build steps

  1. 1

Final Confirmation of Materials and Tools

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare two side boards of SPF lumber 1x8 (19×150×1800mm), six shelf boards (19×150×400mm), one 4mm plywood back panel (400×1800mm), 48 coarse-thread screws 38mm, and four 50mm L-shaped brackets. Tools include an electric screwdriver, handsaw, tape measure, carpenter's square, #120/#240 sandpaper, level, two F-type clamps, paintbrush and paint tray, stapler or small nails.

    Measure
    W 400 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 20

    Tip

    • SPF lumber tends to warp. Check each piece for warp by sight at purchase, selecting boards with less than 1mm warp.
    • L-shaped brackets and screws are the lifeline for tipping prevention. Do not omit.

    Watch out

    • Confirm each SPF board for warp, cracks, and knots before purchase. Assembling boards with warp exceeding 1mm leads to crooked shelves.
    • The 4mm thick plywood back panel is thin and fragile; after cutting, store it upright immediately to prevent breakage.
  2. 2

    Securing a Workspace

    ≈ 10 min

Secure a workspace where you can set up the 1800mm high bookshelf vertically. A ceiling height over 2200mm and floor area about 1500×1200mm is sufficient. Lay blue tarps and support long boards on two sawhorses.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 2 / 20

    Tip

    • Assembly is done lying on the floor; raising the bookshelf is only the final step. Even small rooms can be accommodated.

    Watch out

    • Standing the assembled bookshelf alone is difficult; two-person work is safer.
    • If ceiling height is below 2000mm, the bookshelf will hit the ceiling when raised. Confirm beforehand.
  3. 3

Creating the Cut List and Ordering Cuts

    ≈ 20 min

Submit a cut list to the home center for two side boards (1800mm), six shelf boards (400mm), and one back panel (400×1800mm). When cutting yourself, support long boards (1800mm) on two sawhorses and crosscut carefully. Aim for cutting tolerance within ±2mm.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 3 / 20

    Tip

    • Cutting fees are about 30-50 yen per cut. Ordering all cuts costs about 1000 yen and saves 30 minutes, providing instant cutting.
    • Bundling six shelf boards of identical size for a single cut yields the best precision.

    Watch out

    • 19mm thick SPF boards tend to warp even when cut straight; use a guide for perfectly straight cuts.
    • 4mm plywood is soft and distorts if not supported underneath during cutting.
  4. 4

Sanding All Components (#120 then #240)

    ≈ 40 min

Sand all components starting with #120 grit and finish with #240 grit sandpaper. Pay special attention to side boards' shelf support surfaces, shelf boards' top, bottom, and edges. Rounding shelf edges where hands touch improves usability. After sanding, thoroughly remove wood dust with a vacuum.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 4 / 20

    Tip

    • Sanding shelf boards to a smooth finish allows easy book insertion and removal.
    • Edges (cut ends) raise fibers; sand these carefully starting with #120 grit.

    Watch out

    • SPF is soft; sanding too much alters dimensions. Use #120 for basic sanding, #240 only for finishing.
    • Over-rounding corners looks clumsy; maintain about a 2mm radius.
  5. 5

Marking Shelf Positions on Side Boards

    ≈ 15 min

Place two side boards side by side and mark shelf positions with a pencil for six shelf levels. Shelf spacing is 300mm each from the bottom (total 1800mm for six levels) or adjusted per design, such as wider spacing near the top for display. Align the two side boards completely and mark simultaneously.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 5 / 20

    Tip

    • Clamp the two side boards together before marking to ensure shelf positions match exactly.
    • Use standard heights for A4 (297mm), A5 (210mm), or paperback (150mm) books to determine shelf spacing for convenient storage.

    Watch out

    • If shelf positions on left and right side boards are misaligned, shelf boards will fit at an angle. Mark both simultaneously with boards clamped.
    • Forgetting the shelf board thickness of 19mm when calculating spacing results in narrower real intervals.
  6. 6

    Preparing Pilot Holes

    ≈ 20 min

Drill 3mm diameter pilot holes at marked positions. Drill from the outside of the side boards toward the shelf board edges, penetrating the side board and entering the shelf board 10mm deep (total of 29mm). Use masking tape on the drill bit for depth guidance.

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 6 / 20

    Tip

    • 3mm pilot holes are about 70% of the diameter of the 38mm coarse-thread screws (4.2mm shaft), reliably preventing wood splitting.
    • Each shelf board requires two pilot holes on each side board (4 screws per shelf), for a total of 24 holes to prevent omission.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient pilot hole depth prevents screws from fully seating; drill slightly deeper for safety.
    • Avoid drilling completely through the shelf board by using tape depth stops.
  7. 7

Temporarily Fix Shelf Boards to One Side Board

    ≈ 20 min

Lay one side board flat on the floor; stand the six shelf boards aligned to the marks. Temporarily clamp using F-type clamps and verify that the side board and shelf boards form right angles with a carpenter's square. For areas where the square cannot fit, check visually.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 20

    Tip

    • Assemble shelf boards from the bottom upwards for greater stability.
    • One clamp per shelf board is ideal; having six clamps eases work. If only two clamps are available, proceed sequentially.

    Watch out

    • Fixing while out of right angle causes overall skew. Always check with a square.
    • Shelf boards protruding beyond the side board edge prevent later back panel attachment.
  8. 8

    Screw Fixing One Side

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes from the outside of the side board into the shelf board edges, securing each shelf at two points, totaling 12 screws. The screw heads should be flush or slightly countersunk (0.5mm). Use medium torque on an impact driver; finish tightening by hand with a quarter turn.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 8 / 20

    Tip

    • Offsetting the two screws vertically slightly increases withdrawal strength.
    • If the screw heads are visible, they can be optionally filled and hidden with wood dowels later.

    Watch out

    • Over-tightening screws in 19mm SPF boards can cause splitting; use medium torque only.
    • Screws driven at an angle that protrude through the other side should be removed, filled with wood filler, and reinstalled at a correct position.
  9. 9

Preparation for Attaching Opposite Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

With shelf boards fixed to one side board and the assembly stood upright, fit the other side board to align shelf ends with marked positions on it. Temporarily clamp and check right angles with the assembly vertical.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 9 / 20

    Tip

    • This step is best done by two people: one to hold and one to clamp, improving accuracy.
    • Markings on the opposite side board were made previously; do not rewrite.

    Watch out

    • Attempting this alone risks shelves dropping; always work with two persons or lean the assembly against a wall.
  10. 10

    Screw Fixing Opposite Side

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes from the outside of the opposite side board into shelf boards, two screws per shelf, totaling 12 screws. This completes fixing of both side boards and shelf boards, forming the main bookshelf structure.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 10 / 20

    Tip

    • After fixing both sides, use a level to confirm each shelf is horizontal. If any shelf is tilted, loosen and adjust.

    Watch out

    • Driving screws on both sides at the same time causes distortion. Fix all screws on one side completely before the other.
  11. 11

Confirming Overall Level and Diagonal Check

    ≈ 15 min

Place assembled bookshelf on the floor. Use a level to confirm each shelf is horizontal. Measure diagonal lengths (top left to bottom right and top right to bottom left) using a tape measure; the difference should be within 5mm. If distorted, use clamps to loosen, adjust, and add screws to fix.

    Check level
    Level ✓
    LevelSTEP 11 / 20

    Tip

    • A diagonal difference over 5mm indicates a parallelogram shape; correct before attaching back panel.
    • The bookshelf's rigidity increases greatly after back panel attachment; fix distortions beforehand.

    Watch out

    • Shelf boards sagging at centers worsen under book load. Shelves up to 600mm length are acceptable; consider reinforcement if over 1000mm.
  12. 12

    Preparing to Attach Back Panel

    ≈ 10 min

Place the 4mm plywood back panel (400×1800mm) against the bookshelf rear. Align corners and confirm diagonal match with the bookshelf (the back panel corrects final distortions). Lightly tape the back panel to the bookshelf with painter’s tape.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 12 / 20

    Tip

    • The back panel is a critical structural component to prevent distortion; attaching it crookedly reduces rigidity.
    • 4mm plywood can be easily attached with a stapler. For small nails, drill pilot holes beforehand.

    Watch out

    • If the back panel is larger than the bookshelf, trim protruding parts. If smaller, maintain uniform gaps within 5mm around edges.
  13. 13

    Stapling Back Panel

    ≈ 20 min

Attach the back panel to side boards and shelves using a stapler (15mm staples) or small nails, spacing about every 100-150mm around edges and shelf lines. Start from corners and proceed along diagonals sequentially to minimize distortion.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 13 / 20

    Tip

    • A stapler costs 1500-2500 yen at home centers but speeds assembly compared to small nails. Worth investing for bookshelf making.
    • Mark shelf positions on the back panel with pencil before stapling to avoid missing attachment points on shelves.

    Watch out

    • Staples protruding into the inside can damage books; 15mm staples suit 19mm thickness appropriately.
    • If staples are only around the edges and not on shelf lines, the back panel may warp under load.
  14. 14

    Preparation for Installing L-Shaped Brackets

    ≈ 15 min

Attach four 50mm L-shaped brackets on upper back left and right sides (two each side). One side attaches to bookshelf top edge; the other side attaches to wall. Confirm wall stud positions with a stud sensor beforehand.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 14 / 20

    Tip

    • Cheap stud sensors from 100-yen shops lack accuracy; a home center model (1000-2000 yen) is recommended.
    • Wall studs are typically spaced at 455mm; after finding one, guessing neighbors is easier.

    Watch out

    • Drywall alone cannot support screws for tipping prevention; always secure into studs.
    • If bracket positions do not align with studs, adjust brackets left or right to center screws into studs.
  15. 15

Installing L-Shaped Brackets on Bookshelf Side

    ≈ 10 min

Install the four L-shaped brackets on the bookshelf upper side board exterior. Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through the bracket screw holes. Brackets should be flush with the side board or have less than 5mm gap, projecting perpendicular to the wall attachment surface.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 15 / 20

    Tip

    • Ensure brackets are oriented so the bent part faces the wall side and screw holes face the bookshelf side.

    Watch out

    • If brackets are installed crookedly, gaps appear between bracket and wall when fixed. Confirm with a level.
  16. 16

Setting Up Bookshelf and Wall Fixing

    ≈ 20 min

Move the bookshelf to its intended location and stand it upright (two people recommended). Place snug against the wall. Through bracket holes on the wall side, drive 45-50mm coarse-thread screws (included or separately purchased) into wall studs. Fix all four points to complete tipping prevention.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 16 / 20

    Tip

    • Screws into the wall should be longer than 38mm to reach studs, using 45-50mm screws.
    • Wall fixing is the most critical step; skipping it risks injury or death from tipping during earthquakes.

    Watch out

    • Using only drywall anchors is insufficient strength; always screw into studs.
    • If gaps over 5mm exist between wall and bookshelf, insert shims before fixing. Brackets not flush cannot prevent tipping.
  17. 17

    Cleaning Before Painting

    ≈ 10 min

Thoroughly vacuum and wipe the entire bookshelf with a dry cloth to remove all wood dust, oils, and fingerprints. Pre-paint cleaning quality greatly impacts finish. Optionally mask the plywood back panel as it absorbs paint quickly.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 17 / 20

    Tip

    • Wiping procedure of dry wipe → damp wipe → dry wipe ensures perfect cleaning.

    Watch out

    • Remaining wood dust causes rough paint surfaces; check with directed lighting.
  18. 18

    Applying Oil Stain: First Coat

    ≈ 40 min

Using a brush, apply oil stain (e.g., Watco Oil, Kinura) to all surfaces in order: side board exterior, shelf board tops, shelf board undersides, then back panel. After 10-15 minutes, wipe excess with a dry cloth. Use about 60-70% of total amount on this first coat.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 18 / 20

    Tip

    • Oil stain application requires brush on → wait 10-15 minutes → wipe off excess to avoid stickiness.
    • Brush width of 30-50mm suits bookshelf work; larger brushes miss details.

    Watch out

    • Omitting wiping leaves stickiness for over a week; always wipe off excess.
    • Plywood back panel absorbs quickly and can blotch; apply thin coats and wipe carefully.
  19. 19

    Applying Oil Stain: Second Coat

    ≈ 25 min

After 24 hours drying of first coat, apply the second coat with 1/3 to 1/2 amount of first, wiping off excess as before. Two coats deepen color and improve protection. Allow 24-48 hours for full drying.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 19 / 20

    Tip

    • Second coat corrects color unevenness from the first; apply thin and evenly.
    • Apply a third coat if a deeper color is desired.

    Watch out

    • Do not forget wiping excess on second coat; thick layers cause blotches.
    • Keep painted parts indoors during drying to prevent dust and insects sticking.
  20. 20

    Completion, Use Start, and Inspection

    ≈ 15 min

After full oil curing (48 hours), place books and start use. Place heavy books on lower shelves and lighter ones above for balance and stability. Check screw looseness and bracket fixation after one week and tighten if needed.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 20 / 20

    Tip

    • Concentrate heavy books (encyclopedias, etc.) in bottom two shelves; use lighter paperbacks above.
    • Reapply oil every 3-5 years to restore sheen and protective effect.

    Watch out

    • Do not place books immediately after completion; oil may transfer to books before 48 hours drying.
    • Books absorb moisture; use dehumidifiers during rainy season. Moisture causes bookshelf warping.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Always drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
