   Prepare two side boards of SPF lumber 1x10 (19×300×2400mm), six shelf boards (19×300×2400mm), one 4mm plywood back panel (2400×2400mm), sixty-four coarse-thread screws 38mm, and four 50mm L-shaped brackets. Tools include electric driver, saw, measuring tape, carpenter's square, #120/#240 sandpaper, level, two F clamps, brush and paint tray, and a stapler or fine nails.

   Tip

   • SPF lumber tends to warp. Inspect each board visually upon purchase, selecting pieces warped less than 1mm.
   • L-shaped brackets and screws are critical for tip-over prevention. Never omit them.

   • Check each SPF board for warp, cracks, and knots before buying. Using boards warped more than 1mm causes shelf warping.
   • The 4mm plywood back panel is thin and fragile; avoid breakage during movement by standing it upright immediately after cutting.

   Securing the Workspace

   Secure a work area where a 2400mm tall bookshelf can be assembled upright. Ceiling height should be at least 2200mm, and floor space around 1500×1200mm is sufficient. Lay down a blue tarp and support long boards with two sawhorses.

   • Assembly is done lying on the floor; stand up the bookshelf only in the final step, making it possible to work even in small rooms.

   Watch out

   • Erecting the finished bookshelf alone is difficult. Two people are recommended for safety.
   • If ceiling height is below 2000mm, the bookshelf may hit the ceiling when standing it upright. Confirm beforehand.

   Creating Cut List and Requesting Cuts

   Submit a cut list to a home center for two side boards (2400mm), six shelf boards (2400mm), and one back panel (2400×2400mm). If cutting yourself, support long boards on two sawhorses and perform pull cuts. Aim for cutting accuracy within ±2mm.

   • Even straight cuts on 19mm SPF lumber may warp. Use a guide to ensure straight cuts.
   • 4mm plywood is soft and will warp upward if unsupported from below during cutting.
4. 4

   Sanding All Components (#120 then #240)

   Sand all parts with #120 then #240 grit sandpaper. Pay special attention to shelf support surfaces on side boards, upper and lower surfaces of shelf boards, and cut edges. Rounding edges where hands touch the shelves improves usability. After sanding, vacuum completely to remove sawdust.

   Tip

   • A smooth shelf surface facilitates easy handling of books.
   • Cut edges have raised fibers and require careful sanding starting with #120 grit.

   Watch out

   • SPF lumber is soft; oversanding can alter dimensions. Use #120 mainly and #240 only for finishing.
   • Rounding edges excessively produces a clumsy look. Keep radius around 2mm.
5. 5

   Marking Shelf Positions on Side Boards

   Place two side boards side by side and mark shelf positions with pencil for six shelves. Shelf intervals are 300mm from the bottom up (using total 1800mm), or spaced wider at top for display per design. Clamp the two boards together and mark simultaneously to make shelf positions exactly equal.

   Tip

   • Clamping both side boards together before marking ensures perfect alignment of shelf positions.
   • Set shelf spacing according to common book sizes: A4 (297mm height), A5 (210mm), Bunkobon size (150mm) for convenient storage.

   • Mismatched shelf positions cause shelves to be angled. Clamping and simultaneous marking is essential.
   • Forgetting shelf board thickness (19mm) when calculating intervals results in narrowed actual shelf spaces.

   Preparing Pilot Holes

   Drill 3mm pilot holes at marked positions. Drill through from the outside of the side board toward the shelf board edge so the pilot hole passes through side board outer face and into shelf board 10mm (total 29mm depth with 19mm side board thickness). Use masking tape as depth gauge.

   Tip

   • 3mm pilot holes are about 70% of the 4.2mm diameter coarse-thread screw shaft, effectively preventing wood splitting.
   • Each shelf board requires pilot holes on both sides of the side boards, two screws per side per shelf, total 24 holes for six shelves. Check carefully for no omissions.

   Watch out

   • Insufficient pilot hole depth prevents screws from seating fully; drill slightly deeper for safety.
   • Avoid piercing the pilot hole completely through the shelf board by limiting drill depth with tape.
7. 7

   Temporarily Fixing Shelf Boards to One Side Board

   Lay one side board flat and stand six shelf boards upright at marked positions. Clamp temporarily with F clamps and use carpenter's square to verify right angles between side board and shelf boards. If square doesn't fit fully, verify visually.

   • Start from the bottom shelf up when standing shelf boards for stability.
   • One clamp each per shelf board is ideal (six clamps total). Without six clamps, use two clamps in sequence.

   • Fixing with incorrect right angle causes the entire structure to become parallelogram-shaped. Always check with a square.
   • Shelf boards protruding beyond side board edges prevents back panel installation.
8. 8

   Screwing One Side

   Drive coarse-thread 38mm screws through pilot holes from side board outside into shelf board edge. Two screws per position, 12 screws total for six shelves. Screw heads flush or countersunk slightly (0.5mm). Use medium torque on impact driver and tighten last quarter turn by hand.

   Tip

   • Slightly offsetting screws vertically increases withdrawal strength.
   • Visible screw holes can be concealed by wooden dowels optionally.

   Watch out

   • Over-tightening screws splits the 19mm thick SPF lumber edges. Use medium torque.
   • If screws insert crookedly and protrude through shelf board, remove, fill with wood putty, and re-screw in a different position.

   Preparing Attachment of Opposite Side Board

   Stand the partly assembled bookshelf and position the second side board against the opposite ends of the six shelf boards, aligning shelf marks. Temporarily clamp in place, checking that the entire unit stands upright with right angles.

   • Two-person work is recommended: one holds while the other clamps, yielding precise positioning.
   • Opposite side board shelf marks are made at the beginning; no need to remark.

   Watch out

   • Forcing this step alone may cause shelf boards to fall and damage the floor. Always have two people or lean against a wall.

    Screwing the Opposite Side

    Drive coarse-thread 38mm screws into pilot holes from the opposite side board's outside through to shelf boards: two screws per shelf per side, 12 screws total. This completes securing both side boards and six shelf boards, forming the main structure.

    Tip

    • After securing both sides, check all shelf boards with a level. If any shelf tilts, loosen screws, adjust, then retighten.

    Watch out

    • Driving screws on both sides simultaneously causes distortion. Complete screws on one side before the other.

    Checking Overall Level and Diagonal Measurement

    Place assembled bookshelf on the floor and check each shelf board level using a level tool. From front view, measure diagonals (top-left to bottom-right and top-right to bottom-left) with a tape measure; difference should be within 5mm. If distorted, loosen clamps, make adjustments, and add screws to fix.

    • Diagonal difference over 5mm indicates parallelogram distortion. Correct before attaching back panel.
    • Bookshelf rigidity increases after back panel installation; correct warping before mounting back panel.

    • Shelf board sagging (center dropping) worsens under book weight. Shelf length of 600mm is acceptable; longer shelves require reinforcement considerations.

    Preparing Back Panel Installation

    Place the 4mm plywood back panel (2400×2400mm) against the bookshelf’s back. Align corners and check that diagonals match to correct remaining distortion. Once positioned, lightly fix back panel to bookshelf with masking tape.

    • The 4mm plywood can be easily fixed with a stapler. When using fine nails, pre-drill pilot holes.

    Stapling Back Panel

    Attach back panel to side boards and shelf boards using a stapler (15mm staples) or fine nails, spaced every 100-150mm around all edges and along shelf board lines. Start at corners and proceed along diagonal lines to minimize distortion.

    • A stapler costs around 1500-2500 yen from home centers and is faster than nails; a good investment for bookshelf construction.
    • Mark shelf positions on back panel before stapling to avoid missed fixing points at shelves.

    • Staple only on all four edges plus along shelves; omitting these causes back panel to bubble when sagging.

    Preparing to Attach L-shaped Brackets

    Install four 50mm L-shaped brackets at the top back, two on each side. One side attaches to bookshelf top edge, the other fixes to wall studs. Use a stud finder to determine stud locations on the wall beforehand.

    • Budget stud finders from 100 yen stores have low accuracy; home center models (1000-2000 yen) are recommended.
    • Wall studs commonly have 455mm spacing; once one stud is located, nearby stud positions can be estimated.

    • Attaching screws only to drywall does not prevent tip-over. Always screw into studs.
    • If bracket positions do not align with studs, shift brackets horizontally so screws hit stud centers.

    Attaching L-shaped Brackets to Bookshelf

    Attach four L-shaped brackets to the outside of the top side boards using coarse-thread 38mm screws through bracket mounting holes. Fix brackets flush or within 5mm from side boards, oriented so brackets protrude perpendicular to the wall.

    • Bracket orientation matters: the bend faces wall, screw holes face bookshelf.

    Watch out

    • Misaligned brackets cause gaps between bracket and wall when fixed; use a level to ensure correct alignment.
16. 16

    Placing Bookshelf and Wall Attachment

    Two people lift and place the bookshelf in its designated location against the wall. Position flush with wall. Insert coarse-thread screws 45-50mm long (included screws or purchased separately) through the L-shaped bracket holes into wall studs, securing four points for tip-over prevention.

    • Wall screws need to be 45-50mm long to reach the studs, 38mm screws are too short.
    • Wall attachment is the most important step; cutting corners risks injury or death during earthquakes.

    • If gap between wall and bookshelf exceeds 5mm, shim before fixing; otherwise brackets will be ineffective.

    Pre-painting Cleaning

    Thoroughly vacuum and wipe the entire bookshelf with a dry cloth to remove sawdust, oils, and fingerprints. Cleaning quality greatly affects finish appearance. The plywood back panel absorbs paint quickly; masking it beforehand is optional.

    Applying First Coat of Oil Stain

    Apply oil stain (such as Watco Oil or Kinura) over all surfaces with a brush in order: outside of side boards, shelf board tops, shelf board undersides, and back panel. After 10-15 minutes, wipe off excess with a dry cloth. Use about 60-70% of total oil on the first coat, as absorption is high.

    Applying Second Coat of Oil Stain
