Build steps

  1. 1

Final confirmation of parts and tools

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare two side boards of SPF lumber 1x10 (19×250×900mm), six shelf boards (19×250×900mm), one veneer back panel (900×900mm, 4mm thick), 24 coarse-thread screws 38mm, and four 50mm L-brackets. Tools include electric driver, handsaw, tape measure, carpenter's square, #120 and #240 sandpaper, level, two F-type clamps, brush and paint tray, and stapler or small nails.

    Measure
    W 900 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 20

    Tip

    • SPF lumber tends to warp. Inspect each board visually when purchasing and select those with warp of less than 1mm.
    • L-brackets and screws are critical 'lifelines' for preventing overturning. Never omit them.

    Watch out

    • Check each SPF board for warp, splits, and knots before purchasing. Using boards warped over 1mm causes shelf distortion.
    • 4mm thick veneer back panels are thin and easily broken when moving. Store upright immediately after cutting.
  2. 2

    Securing the workspace

    ≈ 10 min

Secure a workspace where the 900mm tall bookshelf can be assembled upright. A ceiling height over 2200mm and floor space about 1500×1200mm is sufficient. Spread a blue sheet and support long boards on two saw horses.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 2 / 20

    Tip

    • Assembly is performed lying on the floor; standing the bookshelf upright is the final step. Even narrow rooms are workable.

    Watch out

    • Standing the assembled bookshelf upright alone is difficult. Two-person operation is safer.
    • If ceiling height is below 2000mm, the bookshelf will hit the ceiling when standing it up. Confirm beforehand.
  3. 3

Create cut list and request cutting

    ≈ 20 min

Submit a cut list for two side boards (900mm), six shelf boards (900mm), and one back panel (900×900mm) to the home center. If cutting yourself, support long boards (900mm) on two saw horses while cross-cutting. Aim for cutting tolerance within ±2mm.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 3 / 20

    Tip

    • Cutting fee per cut is 30-50 yen. Getting all cuts done onsite reduces time from 30 minutes to immediate.
    • Six shelf boards are identical; bundling them for one-time cutting improves accuracy.

    Watch out

    • 19mm thick SPF is prone to warp even in straight cuts. Use guides for straight cuts.
    • 4mm veneer is soft and warps if unsupported underneath when cutting.
  4. 4

Sanding all parts (#120 then #240)

    ≈ 40 min

Sand all parts first with #120, then #240 grit sandpaper. Pay special attention to the shelf support surfaces on side boards, upper and lower surfaces of shelf boards, and wood ends. Rounding shelf edges improves handling. After sanding, vacuum thoroughly to remove dust.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 4 / 20

    Tip

    • Sanding shelf surfaces smooth makes book handling easier.
    • Wood ends (cut surfaces) have raised fibers; sand these carefully starting from #120.

    Watch out

    • SPF is soft; sanding too much alters dimensions. Use #120 primarily, #240 only for finishing.
    • Over-rounding edges looks unsightly; keep radius to around 2mm.
  5. 5

Mark shelf positions on side boards

    ≈ 15 min

Place both side boards together and mark the positions for six shelves with pencil. Shelf spacing can be 300mm per shelf from bottom up (total 1800mm) or designed with wider top spacing for display. Mark both boards simultaneously ensuring identical positions.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 5 / 20

    Tip

    • Clamp the two side boards together before marking to ensure shelf positions align perfectly.
    • Use approximate standard book heights A4 (297mm), A5 (210mm), and bunkobon size (150mm) to set shelf spacing for better storage.

    Watch out

    • If shelf positions on left and right boards differ, shelves will be crooked. Simultaneous marking is essential.
    • Remember shelf thickness (19mm) when calculating spacing to avoid narrow actual gaps.
  6. 6

    Prepare pilot holes

    ≈ 20 min

Drill 3mm diameter pilot holes at marked positions. Drill from outside of side board inward toward shelf board edges, so holes pass through side board and penetrate 10mm into shelf boards. Use masking tape to mark drill depth, aiming for total 29mm depth (19mm side board plus 10mm shelf).

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 6 / 20

    Tip

    • 3mm pilot holes correspond to about 70% of 4.2mm diameter coarse-thread screws, ensuring split prevention.
    • Each shelf requires 2 screws on each side board, totaling 24 pilot holes (6 shelves × 4 screws). Double-check no holes are missed.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient pilot hole depth causes screws not to seat fully; drill slightly deeper for security.
    • Prevent drill bits from passing completely through shelf board by using tape as depth stop.
  7. 7

Temporary attachment of shelf boards to one side board

    ≈ 20 min

Lay one side board flat on the floor. Stand six shelf boards upright aligned with marks. Clamp with F-type clamps for provisional fixation. Confirm right angles between side board and shelves using a carpenter's square and visually where square can’t fit.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 20

    Tip

    • Install shelves starting from bottom for stability.
    • One clamp per shelf board is ideal (6 clamps total). If only two clamps available, work sequentially.

    Watch out

    • Fixing with incorrect right angles causes parallelogram deformation; always check with carpenter's square.
    • Shelves protruding beyond side board edges prevent back panel installation later.
  8. 8

    Screw fastening on one side

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes from outside of side board into shelf board edges, two screws per location, total of 12 screws for 6 shelves. Screw heads should be flush or recessed up to 0.5mm with side board surface. Use medium torque on impact driver and finish tightening by hand turning 1/4 turn.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 8 / 20

    Tip

    • Slight vertical offset of two screws improves pull-out strength.
    • If screw holes are visible later, optionally fill with wood dowels to hide.

    Watch out

    • Over-tightening screws in 19mm SPF can cause splits; use medium torque only.
    • If screws enter at an angle and protrude opposite side, remove, fill with wood putty, and re-screw at correct position.
  9. 9

Preparation to attach opposite side board

    ≈ 15 min

Stand the partially assembled bookshelf upright. Position the other side board on the opposite ends of shelf boards, aligning with marks. Temporarily clamp. Check the entire structure is perpendicular in upright position.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 9 / 20

    Tip

    • This step is recommended as a two-person task: one to hold, one to clamp for best accuracy.
    • Opposite side board markings were made earlier; do not re-mark.

    Watch out

    • Attempting alone can cause shelves to fall off. Always work with two people or lean against wall securely.
  10. 10

    Screw fastening on opposite side

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes from outside on the opposite side board into shelf board edges. Two screws per point, total 12 screws. This completes fixing of side boards and shelf boards, forming the main bookshelf structure.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 10 / 20

    Tip

    • After securing both sides, check shelf horizontality with a level. If any shelf is tilted, loosen screws and adjust.
    • Do not screw both sides simultaneously; fix all screws on one side first, then the other to avoid distortion.

    Watch out

    • Simultaneous screwing on both sides may cause warping.
  11. 11

Overall leveling and diagonal measurement check

    ≈ 15 min

Place the assembled bookshelf on the floor. Use a level to verify each shelf board is horizontal. Measure diagonals from left upper to right lower and right upper to left lower corners with tape measure, ensuring difference is within 5mm. If warped, loosen clamps to adjust, then add screws to secure.

    Check level
    Level ✓
    LevelSTEP 11 / 20

    Tip

    • Diagonal difference over 5mm indicates a parallelogram distortion. Correct before attaching back panel.
    • Back panel enhances rigidity; correct distortions before installing it.

    Watch out

    • Shelf sagging (center bending downward) worsens with book weight. Shelf length around 600mm is acceptable; above 1000mm requires reinforcement consideration.
  12. 12

    Preparation for back panel attachment

    ≈ 10 min

Fit 4mm veneer back panel (900×900mm) on the bookshelf's rear. Align corners and confirm diagonal matches to correct final warp. Lightly tape the back panel to the main body with masking tape after positioning.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 12 / 20

    Tip

    • Back panel is key to preventing structural distortion. Attaching it skewed reduces strength.
    • 4mm veneer can be fixed easily with stapler. If using small nails, pre-drilling pilot holes is recommended.

    Watch out

    • If back panel is larger than bookshelf, trim excess. If too small, maintain even gap within 5mm to edges.
  13. 13

    Stapler fixing of back panel

    ≈ 20 min

Attach back panel to side boards and shelf boards with 15mm staples from a stapler or with small nails. Staple spacing should be 100-150mm all around and along shelf board positions. Begin at corners and proceed along diagonals to reduce warping.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 13 / 20

    Tip

    • Staplers cost 1500-2500 yen at home centers and are faster than nails; good investment for bookshelf making.
    • Mark shelf positions lightly on back panel with pencil prior to stapling to avoid missing shelf board fixes.

    Watch out

    • If staples penetrate inside too far, they can damage books. 15mm staples are appropriate for 19mm thickness.
    • Stapling only on four edges without shelf board lines may cause back panel to bulge when sagging occurs.
  14. 14

    Preparation for L-bracket attachment

    ≈ 15 min

Attach four 50mm L-brackets at the top rear corners (two on each side). One side fixed on bookshelf upper end; other will be fixed on wall. Use a stud finder to locate wall studs for bracket mounting points.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 14 / 20

    Tip

    • Cheap stud finders from 100 yen shops have low accuracy; home center models (1000-2000 yen) are recommended.
    • Wall studs generally spaced at 455mm intervals; once one found, nearby ones are easier to estimate.

    Watch out

    • Drywall only walls don't hold screws well; secure brackets to studs to prevent tipping.
    • If bracket position does not coincide with studs, shift bracket horizontally to align screw holes with stud centers.
  15. 15

    Attach L-brackets on bookshelf side

    ≈ 10 min

Attach four 50mm L-brackets to the outer sides of bookshelf upper side boards with 38mm coarse-thread screws through bracket holes. Fix brackets flush with side board surface or with up to 5mm gap, with bracket extruding perpendicular from wall.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 15 / 20

    Tip

    • L-brackets must be oriented so the bent bracket part faces the wall and screw holes face the bookshelf.

    Watch out

    • If brackets are mounted crookedly, gaps form between wall and bracket during wall fixing; verify with level.
  16. 16

    Bookshelf placement and wall fixation

    ≈ 20 min

Carry bookshelf to installation site (two persons recommended). Set it close to the wall and screw coarse-thread screws 45-50mm long (included or separate) through L-bracket holes into wall studs from the wall side. Secure all four brackets to complete overturn prevention.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 16 / 20

    Tip

    • Wall screws must be 45-50mm to reach studs; 38mm screws are too short.
    • Wall fastening is the most critical step; neglecting it risks injury or suffocation in earthquakes.

    Watch out

    • Drywall anchors alone lack sufficient strength; screws must hit studs.
    • If gap between bookshelf and wall is more than 5mm, shim to ensure tight bracket contact.
  17. 17

    Cleaning before painting

    ≈ 10 min

Clean the entire bookshelf with vacuum and dry cloth to fully remove dust, oils, and fingerprints. Clean surface quality heavily affects finishing. Optionally mask back panel as it absorbs paint quickly.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 17 / 20

    Tip

    • Cleaning involves 'dry wipe → wet wipe → dry wipe' for perfect finishing.
    • Inspect with light to ensure no residual dust.

    Watch out

    • Residual sawdust causes rough paint surfaces.
  18. 18

First coat of oil stain application

    ≈ 40 min

Using brush, evenly apply oil stain (such as Watco oil or Kinura) all over side boards outer surfaces, shelf tops, shelf undersides, then back panel. After 10-15 minutes, wipe off excess with dry cloth. First coat usually consumes 60-70% of total amount owing to absorption.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 18 / 20

    Tip

    • The procedure is apply → wait 10-15 minutes → wipe; wiping prevents sticky residue.
    • Brush widths of 30-50mm work best for bookshelf; too wide misses detailed spots.

    Watch out

    • Failure to wipe leaves stickiness for over a week.
    • Veneer back panel absorbs quickly and can cause unevenness; apply thinly and wipe carefully.
  19. 19

    Second coat of oil stain

    ≈ 25 min

After drying 24 hours from first coat, apply a second coat at 30-50% of first coat's volume. Wipe off excess again. Two coats deepen color and improve protection. Allow 24-48 hours for full drying.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 19 / 20

    Tip

    • Second coat corrects unevenness from first coat; apply thin and even coverage.
    • Additional coats can be applied for deeper color.

    Watch out

    • Do not forget wiping after second coat; thick layers cause blotches.
    • During drying, keep indoors to avoid dust or insects attaching.
  20. 20

Completion, start of use, and inspection

    ≈ 15 min

After full drying for 48 hours post final coat, place books and start use. Place heavy books on lower shelves and lighter books above to maintain balance and stability. After one week of use, check screws and L-bracket fixation, retighten if needed.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 20 / 20

    Tip

    • Concentrate heavy books (encyclopedias etc.) on lower two shelves; upper shelves for light paperbacks or novels.
    • Reapplying oil every 3-5 years restores gloss and protection.

    Watch out

    • Placing books immediately after finishing risks oil staining books; wait at least 48 hours dry time.
    • Books absorb moisture; use dehumidifiers in rainy season to prevent shelf warping.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before screwing to prevent wood splitting.
