Build steps

  1. 1

Final Check of Materials and Tools

    ≈ 15 min

Gather 2 side boards of SPF lumber 1×8 (19×200×1800mm), 6 shelf boards (19×200×300mm), 1 plywood back panel (4mm thick, 300×1800mm), 48 coarse-thread screws 38mm, and 4 L-brackets 50mm. Tools include electric driver, saw, measuring tape, carpenter's square, #120/#240 sandpaper, level, two F-type clamps, brush and paint tray, and a stapler or small nails.

    Measure
    W 300 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 20

    Tip

    • SPF lumber warps easily. Check each piece's warp by eye when purchasing; select lumber with warp under 1mm.
    • L-brackets and screws are the lifeline for tip-over prevention. Do not omit them.

    Watch out

    • Check each SPF lumber piece for warp, cracks, and knots before purchase. Using lumber warped over 1mm causes shelf boards to twist.
    • Plywood back panel is thin and easily breaks during movement. Store it vertically immediately after cutting.
  2. 2

    Securing Work Space

    ≈ 10 min

Secure a workspace where the 1800mm tall bookshelf can be stood up. A ceiling height of 2200mm or more and a floor area about 1500×1200mm allow ample space. Lay a blue sheet and support long materials on two saw horses.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 2 / 20

    Tip

    • Perform assembly lying on the floor; stand up bookshelf only at final step. Can work in small rooms.

    Watch out

    • It is difficult for one person to stand up assembled bookshelf safely. Use two persons.
    • If ceiling height is less than 2000mm, bookshelf will hit ceiling when standing up. Check in advance.
  3. 3

Creating Cut List and Ordering Cuts

    ≈ 20 min

Submit cut list to home center: 2 side boards (1800mm), 6 shelf boards (300mm), back panel (300×1800mm). If cutting yourself, support 1800mm long lumber on two saw horses and cut with pull stroke. Aim for cut tolerance within ±2mm.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 3 / 20

    Tip

    • Cutting at home center costs 30-50 yen per cut; total about 1000 yen for all cuts, reducing 30 minutes to instant.
    • Bundle 6 shelf boards and cut all at once for best accuracy.

    Watch out

    • 19mm thick SPF bends even with straight cuts. Use guides to cut perfectly straight.
    • 4mm plywood bends easily without support below when cutting.
  4. 4

Sanding All Parts (#120 to #240)

    ≈ 40 min

Sand all parts starting with #120 grit, finishing with #240 grit. Especially sand the shelf support surfaces on side boards, top and bottom surfaces and edges of shelf boards thoroughly. Round shelf edges to ease handling. Vacuum all sawdust completely after sanding.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 4 / 20

    Tip

    • Sanding shelf surfaces smooth facilitates smooth book placement.
    • Edges are rough and fibers raise; sand carefully starting with #120.

    Watch out

    • SPF lumber is soft. Avoid over-sanding to keep dimensions. Use #120 mainly, #240 only for finishing.
    • Over-rounding edges looks clumsy; keep radius about 2mm.
  5. 5

Marking Shelf Positions on Side Boards

    ≈ 15 min

Place 2 side boards side by side and mark pencil lines for 6 shelf positions. Shelf spacing: 6 shelves at 300mm intervals from bottom (total 1800mm) or design with wider top shelf for display. Align left and right side boards perfectly to mark simultaneously.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 5 / 20

    Tip

    • Clamp side boards together before marking to ensure identical shelf positions.
    • Use book sizes A4 (297mm), A5 (210mm), and bunko (150mm) as reference for shelf spacing.

    Watch out

    • Mismatch in shelf positions causes shelf boards to insert crookedly; simultaneous marking is essential.
    • Do not forget 19mm shelf board thickness when calculating spacing, otherwise actual gaps shrink.
  6. 6

    Preparing Pilot Holes

    ≈ 20 min

Drill 3mm diameter pilot holes at marked positions. Drill from outside surface of side board through to shelf board end grain. Use masking tape on drill bit to mark depth. Drill through 19mm side board plus 10mm into shelf board for total 29mm depth.

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 6 / 20

    Tip

    • 3mm holes correspond to 70% diameter of 4.2mm coarse-thread screws, preventing splitting.
    • Each shelf board needs 4 pilot holes (2 per side board)×6 shelves = 24 holes. Check no holes missed.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient hole depth causes screws not to seat fully; drill slightly deeper for safety.
    • Avoid drilling too far to prevent bit protruding on opposite side; use tape to limit depth.
  7. 7

Temporarily Fixing Shelf Boards to One Side Board

    ≈ 20 min

Lay first side board flat on floor. Stand 6 shelf boards aligned to marked positions. Use F-type clamps to temporarily hold. Check shelf boards and side board meet at right angles with carpenter's square or by eye where square cannot fit.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 20

    Tip

    • Set shelf boards starting from bottom up for stability.
    • Ideally use one clamp per shelf board (6 clamps total); if fewer clamps, proceed sequentially.

    Watch out

    • Fixing out of square causes assembly to become parallelogram shaped; always check right angles.
    • Shelf board edges protruding beyond side board prevent back panel installation.
  8. 8

    Screwing One Side

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes from side board to shelf board end grain, 2 screws per joint, total 12 screws for 6 shelves. Screw heads flush or recessed 0.5mm into side board surface. Use medium torque on impact driver and finish tightening by hand another quarter turn.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 8 / 20

    Tip

    • Offset 2 screws vertically slightly to increase withdrawal strength.
    • If screw heads show visibly, optionally fill with wood dowels later.

    Watch out

    • Over-tightening screws splits 19mm SPF end grain; stop at medium torque.
    • If screw enters at angle and protrudes the other side, remove screw, fill hole with wood putty, and re-screw at corrected position.
  9. 9

Preparing to Attach Opposite Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Stand assembly with one side board fixed. Position second side board on opposite shelf board ends aligning to marked lines. Temporarily clamp. Confirm vertical and right-angle positioning while the assembly stands.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 9 / 20

    Tip

    • Recommend two-person work: one holding assembly, another clamping, to improve accuracy.
    • Do not re-mark lines on opposite side board; lines already marked during initial marking.

    Watch out

    • One person trying this risks shelves falling; always have two people or lean against wall during work.
  10. 10

    Screwing Opposite Side

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes from opposite side board, 2 screws per shelf board per side (12 screws total). This completes fixing both side boards to all 6 shelf boards, finishing primary bookshelf frame.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 10 / 20

    Tip

    • After both sides fixed, check all shelf boards with level for horizontality. Adjust loosened screws if any shelf tilts.

    Watch out

    • Do not screw both sides simultaneously; fixing one side fully before the other prevents distortion.
  11. 11

    Checking Overall Horizontality and Diagonals

    ≈ 15 min

Place assembled bookshelf on floor. Use level to check each shelf board is horizontal. Measure diagonal distances (top left to bottom right and top right to bottom left) and ensure difference is within 5mm. If warped, loosen clamps and adjust, then add screws again.

    Check level
    Level ✓
    LevelSTEP 11 / 20

    Tip

    • Diagonal difference over 5mm causes parallelogram shape. Correct before attaching back panel.
    • Back panel adds rigidity; fix distortions before installing it.

    Watch out

    • Shelf board sagging under heavy books worsens deformation. Shelf length 600mm acceptable; consider reinforcement for over 1000mm.
  12. 12

    Preparing to Attach Back Panel

    ≈ 10 min

Position 4mm plywood back panel on bookshelf rear. Align all corners and ensure diagonals match the main frame. This alignment further corrects any warp. Lightly fix panel and bookshelf with protective tape.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 12 / 20

    Tip

    • Back panel is important for preventing distortion. Misaligned or tilted installation reduces rigidity.
    • 4mm plywood easily attaches with stapler; small nails require pilot holes.

    Watch out

    • If back panel is larger than frame, trim protruding parts. If smaller, leave consistent gaps within 5mm around edges.
  13. 13

    Stapling Back Panel

    ≈ 20 min

Fix back panel to side boards and shelf boards using stapler staples (about 15mm length) or small nails every 100-150mm around edges and at shelf positions. Start stapling at corners and proceed along diagonals to prevent distortion.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 13 / 20

    Tip

    • Stapler costs 1500-2500 yen at home centers and is faster than nails; worthwhile investment for bookshelf assembly.
    • Mark shelf board positions on back panel with pencil before stapling to avoid omissions.

    Watch out

    • Staples protruding inside frame may scratch books. 15mm staples suit 19mm thick material.
    • Stapling only edges without shelf positions causes back panel to lift if shelves sag.
  14. 14

    Preparing L-Bracket Attachment

    ≈ 15 min

Attach four 50mm L-brackets at upper rear, two on each side. One side attaches to bookshelf top edge, other side attaches to wall studs. Use stud finder to locate wall studs.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 14 / 20

    Tip

    • 100-yen shop stud finders are inaccurate; recommend home center variety (1000-2000 yen).
    • Wall studs typically spaced at 455mm. Once one stud found, approximate location of others can be estimated.

    Watch out

    • If wall is only drywall, screws won't hold and tip-over prevention fails. Always screw into studs.
    • If bracket position doesn't align with studs, adjust bracket position sideways to center screws on studs.
  15. 15

    Attaching L-Brackets to Bookshelf

    ≈ 10 min

Fix four L-brackets to outside upper side boards of bookshelf with coarse-thread screws 38mm via bracket screw holes. Attach bracket flush or with less than 5mm gap, projecting perpendicular from side board for wall mounting.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 15 / 20

    Tip

    • Ensure bracket bend faces wall side and screw holes face bookshelf side for correct orientation.

    Watch out

    • Slanted bracket attachment causes gaps between bracket and wall when mounted; use level to check alignment.
  16. 16

    Placing Bookshelf and Wall Mounting

    ≈ 20 min

Carry bookshelf to desired location (two people recommended). Push tightly to wall, drive coarse-thread screws 45-50mm (provided or separately purchased) through bracket holes into wall studs at all four points to complete tip-over prevention.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 16 / 20

    Tip

    • 38mm screws too short for wall mounting; use 45-50mm screws to reach studs.
    • Wall mounting is critical for safety to prevent injury or death in earthquakes; do not neglect.

    Watch out

    • Drywall anchors alone are insufficient; always screw into studs.
    • If gap between bookshelf and wall exceeds 5mm, insert shim before fastening; unsecured gaps reduce bracket effectiveness.
  17. 17

    Cleaning Before Painting

    ≈ 10 min

Clean entire bookshelf with vacuum and dry cloth to remove all sawdust, oils, and fingerprints. Cleaning quality affects finish quality. Optionally mask plywood back panel since it absorbs paint quickly.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 17 / 20

    Tip

    • Wiping sequence before painting: dry wipe → damp wipe → dry wipe for perfect cleaning.

    Watch out

    • Sawdust left behind causes rough paint surface; check under lighting.
  18. 18

First Coat of Oil Stain Application

    ≈ 40 min

Apply oil stain (Watco Oil, Kinura, etc.) evenly with brush starting from outside of side boards, shelf board tops, shelf board undersides, and back panel in order. After 10-15 minutes, wipe excess stain with dry cloth. Use about 60-70% of total stain in first coating due to absorption.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 18 / 20

    Tip

    • Oil stain application procedure: apply → wait 10-15 min → wipe excess to avoid tacky finish.
    • Brush width 30-50mm optimal for bookshelf work; larger brushes don't reach detailed areas.

    Watch out

    • Skipping wiping leaves tackiness for over a week; always wipe.
    • Plywood back panel absorbs quickly and may cause unevenness; apply thinly and wipe carefully.
  19. 19

    Second Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 25 min

After 24 hours drying from first coat, apply second coat using 1/3 to 1/2 of first coat amount. Also wipe off excess. Two coats deepen color and increase protection. Allow another 24-48 hours for full drying.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 19 / 20

    Tip

    • Second coat corrects unevenness from first coat; apply thinly and evenly.
    • Apply third coat if darker color desired.

    Watch out

    • Do not skip wiping after second coat; thick layers cause blotches.
    • Dry indoors to prevent dust and insects from sticking during drying.
  20. 20

Completion, Start of Use, and Inspection

    ≈ 15 min

After oil is fully dry (48 hours), place books and commence use. Place heavy books on lower shelves and lighter ones on upper shelves for balance and stability. After one week of use, recheck screws and L-bracket fittings and retighten if necessary.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 20 / 20

    Tip

    • Concentrate heavy books (encyclopedias, etc.) on lower two shelves; keep upper shelves light with paperbacks.
    • Reapply oil every 3-5 years to restore sheen and protective effect.

    Watch out

    • Do not place books immediately after finishing; oil can transfer to books. Always wait over 48 hours to dry.
    • Books absorb moisture; use dehumidifier during rainy season. Bookshelf may warp from humidity.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
