Build steps

  1. 1

Confirm installation location and cat traffic flow

    ≈ 15 min

Decide the installation location of the wall-mounted integrated cat tower (400×300×1800mm). Ideally near a window or along a wall where the cat can easily jump on. Choose a place where it can be fixed to the wall to prevent tipping over.

    Measure
    W 400 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 11

    Tip

    • Keep at least 300mm distance from the ceiling to prevent the cat from pushing and climbing the ceiling.
    • Installation near a window is preferred as a sunbathing and viewing spot for cats.
    • If multiple cats are kept, create escape routes by having a height of 1800mm or more.

    Watch out

    • Avoid placing directly under an air conditioner as cats dislike direct airflow.
    • Avoid structures where cats cannot get down after climbing high. Lower base boards should be arranged stepwise.
  2. 2

    Cut and prepare parts

    ≈ 25 min

Cut 5 base boards (15×300×400mm) from 15mm thick Lauan plywood. Prepare 2 hemp rope wrapped poles (φ90×1800mm) and 2 pieces of 2x4 lumber posts (φ90×1800mm). Prepare 5.4m of φ8mm hemp rope, 40 pieces of 50mm coarse-thread screws, and 4 sheets of boa material carpet (300×400mm).

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 2 / 11

    Tip

    • 15mm thick Lauan plywood offers a good balance between strength and lightness; 12mm is not sufficient to support weight.
    • It's faster to buy pre-made hemp rope wrapped poles from DIY stores.
    • Use thin carpets for easy application; thick carpets make it harder for claws to catch.

    Watch out

    • Using thin plywood can cause cracking from impact when cats jump on.
    • Soft core poles cause instability; select poles with hardwood core even if wrapped with hemp rope.
  3. 3

    Sand all parts

    ≈ 25 min

Sand Lauan plywood and 2x4 lumber in order from #120 to #240 grit. Since cats will lick or scratch, no splinters are allowed. Especially bevel all edges carefully.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 3 / 11

    Tip

    • Make all cat-contact surfaces smooth, check by stroking with fingertip.
    • Wood end grain of plywood is rougher than finished surfaces; focus sanding there.
    • Perform sanding indoors or in a well-ventilated area to manage dust.

    Watch out

    • Even a single splinter can injure cat's tongue or paw pads.
    • Dust sticking to carpet is hard to remove; separate sanding location from carpet gluing area.
  4. 4

Mark post positions on base boards

    ≈ 20 min

Mark post attachment positions with pencil on four base boards. Arrange 2 posts in square on bottom base board. Set middle boards at different heights (e.g., 300mm, 600mm, 900mm). Offset slightly from centerline to facilitate cat walking.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 4 / 11

    Tip

    • Uneven base board center of gravity leads to tip over risk; basic setup is a square base with 4 posts.
    • Arrange boards stepwise at different heights to ease cat climbing.
    • Punch center points for holes to ease drilling.

    Watch out

    • Positioning posts too close to board edges risks splitting during screw driving.
    • Misaligned post positions on base boards cause overall distortion; ensure accurate transfer by stacking.
  5. 5

Drill pilot holes in base boards and posts

    ≈ 20 min

Drill φ5mm pilot holes in base boards and 2x4 posts. Use countersink bit on base boards to recess screw heads flush. For hemp rope wrapped poles, attach with supplied metal brackets.

    Drill a hole
    φ5mm
    DrillSTEP 5 / 11

    Tip

    • Countersinking screw heads results in a neat finish and prevents cats catching claws.
    • Use drill stoppers to control hole depth and avoid through drilling.
    • Keep at least 20mm from edges on 2x4 lumber to prevent cracking.

    Watch out

    • Driving 50mm screws without pilot holes splits 2x4 lumber.
    • Excessive countersink depth reduces screw holding strength.
  6. 6

    Assemble bottom board and posts

    ≈ 30 min

Stand two posts (hemp rope wrapped pole and 2x4 lumber) vertically on the bottom board (450×450). Secure from board underside with three 50mm coarse-thread screws per post (6 screws total). Check verticality with carpenter's square during assembly. Use more screws on bottom board as it bears most weight.

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 6 / 11

    Tip

    • Verify post verticality with level in two directions (front and side) aiming for zero deviation.
    • Apply wood glue on joints to increase rigidity when screwing from bottom board.
    • As the bottom board's underside is hidden, increase screw count without worry about appearance.

    Watch out

    • Even slight leaning of posts makes upper boards tilt, causing instability for cats.
    • Insufficient screw count causes post wobble due to cat movement.
  7. 7

Attach middle and upper base boards

    ≈ 30 min

Mount middle boards (300-900mm height) horizontally on posts. From board underside, drill φ5mm pilot holes and drive 50mm coarse-thread screws into posts (6 screws per board: 2 posts x 3 screws each). Check each board's levelness. Secure fixing strength to withstand cat's jumping impact.

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 11

    Tip

    • Uneven boards cause discomfort to cats.
    • Drive screws along the post centerline; driving near edges risks splitting.
    • Consider decreasing board size with height for center of gravity.

    Watch out

    • Screwing impact can shift lower board levels; recheck levelness after installing all three boards.
    • Insufficient screws increase risk of falling; design for 10kg cat plus dynamic load.
  8. 8

Wrap hemp rope on post for scratching function

    ≈ 30 min

If not using pre-made hemp rope wrapped poles, tightly wind φ8mm hemp rope (5.4m) on 2x4 lumber post. Fix both ends with staples or screws. Wrap from bottom to top, tightly without gaps.

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 8 / 11

    Tip

    • Start by drilling a hole in post and inserting rope end fixed with wood glue to prevent slipping.
    • Fix with staples frequently during winding to prevent loosening.
    • Hide ending by inserting rope end into the same hole as start for neat finish.

    Watch out

    • Loose rope will unravel when cats pull; wind tight and fix during wrapping.
    • Avoid synthetic fiber ropes as cats may chew and ingest hazardous materials.
  9. 9

    Attach carpet (boa material)

    ≈ 25 min

Attach carpet sheets on top surfaces of three boards (upper, middle, base) using double-sided tape or wood glue. Cut corners to match board shape with cutter. Ensure adhesion strength resists cat claws pulling.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    InstallSTEP 9 / 11

    Tip

    • Use strong double-sided tape as regular tape peels off under cat claws.
    • Align carpet pile direction for better appearance.
    • Leave some excess on edges and fold underneath to prevent peeling.

    Watch out

    • Weak adhesion causes carpets to peel during play creating ingestion risk.
    • Avoid cheap carpets with latex backing that decomposes to powder.
  10. 10

Fix tower to wall to prevent tipping

    ≈ 20 min

Secure tower top to wall with L-brackets and seismic belts to prevent tipping. Attach firmly into wall studs identified by stud finder. Ensures stability during earthquakes or vigorous cat activity.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    InstallSTEP 10 / 11

    Tip

    • Wall fixation is essential for safety; 1200mm height towers easily fall when cats jump.
    • Seismic belts can be bought cheaply or higher quality ones at home centers for better assurance.
    • Do not rely on drywall only; always fix to studs.

    Watch out

    • Omitting wall fixation risks tower collapse injuring cats during earthquakes.
    • Confirm hardware load capacity to support tower weight, cat load, and seismic forces.
  11. 11

    Final check and introduce cat

    ≈ 15 min

Check all screws are tight, carpet adhesion is secure, and posts have no wobble. Place tower at installation spot and check levelness with level. If wobbly, adjust feet with felt pads. Shake tower strongly to confirm stability before introducing cat.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 11 / 11

    Tip

    • Placing cat treats on boards immediately after completing helps reduce cat caution when climbing.
    • Do not force cat onto tower on first day; allow them to explore naturally.
    • Place adjacent furniture as 'stairs' to help cats climb over a few days.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient checks can cause assembly defects leading to cat injury.
    • If cat refuses to climb, location or scent may be unsuitable; observe for a while.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
  • ⚠️When fixing to the wall, be sure to locate studs (attachment to drywall only is not allowed).
  • ⚠️Tighten all joints securely to withstand the cat's weight.
