Build steps

  1. 1

    Check Parts and Tools

    ≈ 15 min

Gather 20 cedar boards (19×120×450mm), 4 corner posts (38×89×600mm), 1 bottom board (12×412×412mm), and 60 coarse-thread screws 65mm. For earthworm composting, moderate ventilation holes and light shielding are important, so also add 1 can of black waterproof wood preservative and a thin rubber mat (can use scrap) for light blocking. Required tools: electric driver, circular saw, tape measure, carpenter's square, sandpaper, clamps, level.

    Measure
    W 450 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 20

    Tip

    • Earthworms (Eisenia fetida) can be purchased for about 1,000 yen per 100g at gardening stores or online.
    • Due to its compact size (450×450×600mm), few parts are needed making it beginner-friendly.

    Watch out

    • Earthworms are vulnerable to direct sunlight and high temperatures. Decide installation location before starting to reduce waste.
    • 60 screws are more than needed; about 20 will remain unused and can be used for other DIY projects.
  2. 2

    Prepare Workspace

    ≈ 10 min

Clear a flat workspace of 1.5m×1.5m. Since this project is small, one workbench is sufficient. Spread a blue sheet to handle wood chips. Earthworm composters ideally are placed in outdoor shaded areas, so also inspect the intended installation site before assembly.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 2 / 20

    Tip

    • 450mm length parts are manageable and one person can complete the work alone.
    • Shaded outdoor locations (north side, under eaves, etc.) are best for installation. Secure space beforehand.

    Watch out

    • Direct sunlight causes earthworm death from high heat. Shade is essential.
    • Indoor setup risks odors and fruit flies. Outdoor setup is recommended.
  3. 3

    Marking Cut Lines on Parts

    ≈ 20 min

Using pencil and carpenter's square, mark cut lines on all parts. Front and back boards (450mm) 10 pieces and side boards (450mm) 10 pieces are of equal length; mark 'Front' and 'Side' on back sides to record orientation during assembly. Mark up and down on 4 posts. For earthworm composting, also mark ventilation hole positions (top of side boards and bottom board).

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 3 / 20

    Tip

    • 450×450mm squares have minimal distinction between front/back/left/right, so errors are less likely.
    • Ventilation holes should be designed to prevent earthworm escape (Φ5mm or smaller). Note this design.

    Watch out

    • If ventilation holes are too large, earthworms may escape. Strictly keep Φ5mm or less.
    • Use a 2B pencil for marking lines; mechanical pencils may smudge.
  4. 4

Cut Front and Back Boards and Side Boards (20 Cedar Boards)

    ≈ 30 min

Cut 20 cedar boards to 19×120×450mm. Home center cutting service costs about 30-50 yen per board, totaling under 1,000 yen. If cutting yourself, use a circular saw with a right-angle guide. 450mm length is easy to handle and precise. Cutting in bundles (4 boards clamped together) saves time.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 4 / 20

    Tip

    • 450mm length is short and manageable for one person without wobbling.
    • Cutting bundles (clamped 4 boards) saves time and equalizes dimensions.

    Watch out

    • Stop immediately if saw blade jams during bundle cutting to avoid kickback.
    • No allowance for mistakes as exactly 20 boards of 450mm are needed; cut carefully.
  5. 5

    Cut Posts and Bottom Board

    ≈ 20 min

Cut 2×4 lumber (38×89mm) into 600mm lengths, 4 pieces. Cut bottom board lauan plywood 12mm to 412×412mm (internal size calculated as 450 - 19×2 = 412). Being square, no orientation marking needed. Clamp posts together to cut all 4 at once for uniform length.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 5 / 20

    Tip

    • Clamp 4 posts together and cut once for precise identical length.
    • Orientation of bottom board is not a concern (square).

    Watch out

    • If one post is cut at an angle, adjust others to match the same angle.
    • Cutting bottom board larger than 412mm causes fit problems; smaller cuts waste material.
  6. 6

Sand All Parts (#120 then #240)

    ≈ 50 min

Remove burrs from all parts using #120 grit sandpaper, then finish with #240 grit. Since earthworms have delicate skin, sand interiors carefully. Orbital sander takes about 30 minutes; sanding by hand takes about 60 minutes. Wipe off dust and dry.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 6 / 20

    Tip

    • Smooth interior surfaces for earthworm safety.
    • Perform #120 and #240 sanding consecutively for efficient workflow.

    Watch out

    • Sharp burrs on interior surfaces can injure earthworms; verify by touch.
    • Wear a mask to avoid inhaling dust.
  7. 7

Temporary Assembly of Posts and Check Right Angles

    ≈ 15 min

Stand 4 corner posts on workbench forming a 450×450mm square. Use carpenter's square to confirm each corner is 90°. Temporarily fix with F-clamps. The diagonal theoretical length is 636mm (450√2). Acceptable deviation is ±2mm. Small size makes maintaining precision easier.

    Level the ground
    FoundationSTEP 7 / 20

    Tip

    • Small size reduces warping making assembly easier.
    • Mark post positions on workbench with pencil to reposition if moved.

    Watch out

    • Proceeding with incorrect right angles causes lid misfit.
    • Check verticality front and back and side to side using level.
  8. 8

    Drill Pilot Holes

    ≈ 20 min

Use 3.5mm drill bit to create pilot holes for all screws. Each post has 5 rows × 2 faces = 10 holes, total 40 holes. Drill depth is 30mm; mark depth with masking tape on bit. Few pilot holes due to small size; task takes about 20 minutes.

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 8 / 20

    Tip

    • Wrap tape on bit at 30mm to maintain uniform depth.
    • Drill all holes before assembly for smooth workflow.

    Watch out

    • Screwing without pilot holes will split 2×4 lumber; this step is mandatory.
    • Keep drill bit perpendicular to avoid angled holes.
  9. 9

Attach First Layer of Front and Back Boards

    ≈ 20 min

Fix the bottom row of front and back boards (450mm) to the 4 corner posts with coarse-thread screws 65mm. Align bottom edge of boards with post bottoms, sandwiched between end posts. Use 2 screws per connection for total 8 screws. 450mm length is manageable solo.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 9 / 20

    Tip

    • One person can handle 450mm boards without clamps.
    • After loosely fixing first screw, recheck right angle before driving the second screw.

    Watch out

    • If screws are driven at an angle, remove and fill holes with wood filler, then move screw about 5mm and retry.
    • Wood end splitting should be filled with wood filler; does not affect strength.
  10. 10

Attach Front and Back Boards Layers 2 to 5 (Limited Ventilation Slits)

    ≈ 30 min

Stack layers 2 and up on top of first layer. To prevent earthworm escape, keep ventilation slits narrow at 2-3mm (unlike 5mm in compost-1/2). Five layers give 600mm height (120×5). Use 2mm thick spacers such as cardboard as substitutes.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 10 / 20

    Tip

    • Ventilation slits limited to 2-3mm to prevent earthworm escape, narrower than typical compost bins.
    • 2mm thick spacer can be cardboard or thick paper.

    Watch out

    • If slits exceed 5mm, earthworms escape; keep strictly at 2-3mm.
    • No slits causes anaerobic fermentation and bad odor; maintain at least 2mm ventilation.
  11. 11

Attach Side Boards (Both Left and Right Sides)

    ≈ 30 min

Attach 10 side boards (450mm) same method as front and back boards on both left and right sides. Boards overlap front and back board edges. Maintain 2-3mm slit per layer. Small size speeds assembly (about 30 minutes).

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 11 / 20

    Tip

    • 450mm side boards are short and easy to handle; assemble both sides at once.
    • Apply small amount of glue at joining edges with front/back boards for improved airtightness.

    Watch out

    • If pilot hole positions for side boards are off, redrill.
    • If side boards protrude, plane post sides to adjust.
  12. 12

    Diagonal Measurement Check

    ≈ 10 min

After all wall boards are attached, measure diagonals on top surface. The theoretical value is 636mm (450√2). Acceptable deviation ±2mm. Small size results in minimal distortion; earthworm composters benefit from precise fit for stable temperature control.

    Check level
    Level ✓
    LevelSTEP 12 / 20

    Tip

    • Small size generally results in no distortion; often this is just a confirmation step.
    • Distortion within 2mm does not affect earthworm growth.

    Watch out

    • Though rare, distortion over 5mm requires clamp adjustment.
    • Temperature control becomes unstable with large distortion; keep distortion minimal.
  13. 13

Drill Ventilation Holes in Bottom Board (Limited)

    ≈ 20 min

Drill sixteen Φ5mm small ventilation holes arranged in 4×4 grid on bottom board (412×412mm). To prevent earthworm escape, strictly maintain Φ5mm hole diameter. Additionally, drill four Φ10mm drainage holes at corners. Drainage holes are essential as excess moisture kills earthworms.

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 13 / 20

    Tip

    • Φ5mm is for ventilation; Φ10mm holes are drainage with distinct functions.
    • Place drainage holes at corners to prevent water accumulation.

    Watch out

    • Ventilation holes larger than Φ5mm cause earthworm escape.
    • Omitting drainage holes leads to water accumulation and earthworm drowning.
  14. 14

    Attach Bottom Board

    ≈ 20 min

Drop bottom board (412×412mm) inside box bottom, fix with coarse-thread screws 65mm at 4 points around post bases. Adjust post height so tray (plastic or similar) can be placed under to collect worm liquid (vermicompost tea).

    Lay the top board
    5mm 間隔
    Top boardSTEP 14 / 20

    Tip

    • Leaving clearance under bottom board allows collection of valuable worm liquid fertilizer.
    • Apply wood preservative coating to top of bottom board before attaching.

    Watch out

    • Seal gaps between bottom and side boards with glue to prevent worm escape.
    • If bottom board warps, liquid will pool unevenly; support center with L-bracket.
  15. 15

Make Lid Board (Focus on Light Blocking)

    ≈ 35 min

Line up 4 spare cedar boards at 450mm width to make a 450×480mm lid, reinforce on back. Earthworms dislike light, so attach black rubber mat or thick paper under lid for shading. Ensure 5mm slope to drain rainwater.

    Lay the top board
    5mm 間隔
    Top boardSTEP 15 / 20

    Tip

    • Use black mat for lid underside to block light and reduce earthworm stress.
    • Diagonal reinforcement helps prevent warping.

    Watch out

    • Without light-blocking underlay, worms will burrow when lid is opened, complicating work.
    • If lid warps, flatten by applying moisture and weighted objects.
  16. 16

    Attach Hinges and Lid

    ≈ 20 min

Attach 2 stainless steel hinges onto lid and top board of main body. Pre-drill pilot holes φ2mm before screwing tight. Since earthworm composters open frequently, hinges must be securely fixed and movements checked. Adding a lid stopper is recommended.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 16 / 20

    Tip

    • Earthworm composters are opened 1-2 times per week; use durable hinges.
    • Use stopper (chain) to prevent lid from falling backward.

    Watch out

    • If hinge position is off, fill holes with wood filler and reposition.
    • Damaged screw holes can be repaired with toothpick and glue.
  17. 17

1st Coat of Wood Preservative (Black Recommended)

    ≈ 45 min

Apply one coat of outdoor wood preservative (e.g., Xyladecor) black on all inside and outside surfaces. Black color recommended to increase light shielding. Brush carefully into wood ends and corners; first coat should be thin to soak in. Coverage approx. 2㎡; 500ml can sufficient. Dry for 24 hours.

    Waterproof
    Two coats required
    WaterproofSTEP 17 / 20

    Tip

    • Black absorbs sunlight and promotes fermentation, but placement in shade is assumed to avoid overheating.
    • Wait until inside coating is fully dry before adding earthworms; solvent odors harm worms.

    Watch out

    • Adding worms immediately after painting causes gas poisoning; wait minimum 2 weeks.
    • Wipe off any drips on ground before drying.
  18. 18

    2nd Coat of Wood Preservative

    ≈ 40 min

After 1st coat dries completely, apply a second, slightly thicker coat. Apply 3 coats to wood ends if desired. Dry 24 hours. For outdoor rain-exposed use, 3 coats recommended for longer lifespan.

    Waterproof
    Two coats required
    WaterproofSTEP 18 / 20

    Tip

    • 3 coats extend lifespan significantly in shaded outdoor installation.
    • Choose days above 15℃ and humidity below 70% for coating.

    Watch out

    • Failure to cover with tarp during rain causes whitening.
    • Clean brushes with thinner as they harden.
  19. 19

    Prepare for Earthworm Introduction

    ≈ 30 min

After minimum 2 weeks drying, place 5cm thick bedding material (moistened newspaper strips or leaf mold). Add 100-200g of earthworms (Eisenia fetida), and start feeding small amounts of vegetable scraps. Avoid adding large amounts in first week to allow adaptation.

    Level the ground
    FoundationSTEP 19 / 20

    Tip

    • Shredded newspaper moistened with water is cost-effective bedding.
    • Cut vegetable scraps into small pieces for easier consumption.

    Watch out

    • Residual solvent odors from coating cause worm death; ensure >2 weeks drying.
    • Adding excessive vegetable scraps at once causes rot and fruit fly infestation.
  20. 20

    Installation and Final Check

    ≈ 20 min

Place finished earthworm composter in shaded area (north side, under eaves, etc.). Lightweight enough for one person to move. Ensure level ground. Place a tray under bottom board to collect worm liquid. Check lid operation, tighten all screws, confirm no wobbling. Completion.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 20 / 20

    Tip

    • Worm liquid accumulates in about 1 month; dilute 10x to use as valuable fertilizer.
    • Earthworms burrow 2-3cm deep daily; do not cover them forcibly.

    Watch out

    • Exposure to direct sunlight and temperatures over 30℃ kills worms; shade mandatory.
    • Cover exterior with styrofoam in winter; worms inactive below 5℃.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Wood preservative coating is essential for outdoor use (recommend re-coating annually).
  • ⚠️Use stainless steel screws (iron screws will rust).
  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before screwing to prevent wood splitting.
