Build steps
- 1
Measure and confirm installation location
≈ 15 minMeasure the installation location for the wooden dog house for small dogs (600×500×600mm). Confirm the width of the installation space, ensure a corridor of at least 600mm, and check the door-opening range.
MeasureW 600 mmMeasureSTEP 1 / 13Tip
- Place so it is not directly under gutters or above drainage.
- Leave at least 20mm gap between house and wall or furniture for easier cleaning.
- Avoid boundary between wooden deck or soil and ground level to prevent instability.
Watch out
- Insufficient width less than 600mm makes installation impossible; prior measurement is important.
- Outdoor installation sites with frequent foot traffic; protruding placement risks tripping.
- 2
Create material cutting list
≈ 30 minCut cedar boards 19mm thick into front and rear panels (19×120×600mm) ×10 pieces each, side panels (19×120×500mm) ×10 pieces, bottom board from lauan plywood 12mm (12×462×562mm) ×1 piece, and corner posts from 2×4 lumber (38×89×600mm) ×4 pieces. Using a paid cutting service at a home center is convenient.
CutUse the in-store cut serviceCutSTEP 2 / 13Tip
- Cedar boards vary greatly in knots and warping; inspect and select each piece individually.
- The 600mm length for corner posts includes the height of front and rear panels (120×4=480mm) plus 20mm allowance.
- Request cutting service to align wood grain for better appearance if desired.
Watch out
- Cut ends of cedar boards absorb water easily; apply wood preservative thoroughly in later steps.
- 2×4 lumber actual size is 38×89mm; specify '38×89' when ordering cuts due to difference between nominal and actual sizes.
- 3
Sand all parts
≈ 40 minSand with #120 grit followed by #240 grit sandpaper. Cedar boards are soft and prone to warping and splinters; carefully sand ends and surfaces. Chamfer the edges of 2×4 corner posts to create smooth corners to avoid catching shoes or bumping feet.
Sand#120SandSTEP 3 / 13Tip
- Cedar grain is coarse; sand with the grain to prevent splintering.
- Sand ends smooth with #120 first, then #240; skipping this leads to uneven paint finish.
- Using an orbital sander can reduce time to one-third; consider renting one.
Watch out
- Sanding produces much dust; perform in ventilated locations like balconies or garages.
- Do not paint before removing dust; leftover dust causes rough surface. Use air duster or damp cloth to clean.
- 4
Stand and temporarily fix corner posts
≈ 25 minErect four 2×4 posts vertically and arrange at the four corners of the workbench. Clamp temporarily to workbench to keep level top and bottom. Use a level to check verticality. Measure the spacing between posts to be 600mm front to back and 300mm side to side (inside dimensions).
Build the frameTighten joints firmlyAssembleSTEP 4 / 13Tip
- Check verticality on two faces (front and side) with level aiming for zero offset.
- Uneven concrete or cushioned flooring can be leveled by placing plywood as a flat work surface.
- Align knots on posts in the same direction for better appearance; rotate posts before positioning.
Watch out
- If even one post is off vertical, assembled panels will be tilted.
- Be consistent when measuring inside or outside of posts; inconsistency may cause 5-10mm error.
- 5
Attach front and rear panels (starting from bottom)
≈ 40 minPlace first cedar board horizontally at bottom front, apply wood glue to left and right corner posts, then fasten with 65mm coarse-thread screws—2 screws per side (4 total) per board. Subsequent boards are stacked with 5mm ventilation gap (about thickness of one chopstick). Attach 5 boards each on front and rear.
Build the frameTighten joints firmlyAssembleSTEP 5 / 13Tip
- 5mm ventilation gaps prevent moisture buildup in shoes; closing the gaps leads to mold.
- Use chopsticks to maintain consistent spacing of slits.
- Drill 4mm pilot holes on corner post side before screwing to avoid splitting.
Watch out
- Screwing 65mm coarse-thread screws without pilot holes causes cedar to split; always drill pilot holes.
- Driving screws too deep causes surface indentation; stop flush with board surface.
- 6
Attach side panels (left and right)
≈ 35 minAttach ten side panel boards (19×120×500mm) with ventilation slits on both sides, five per side, similar to front and rear panels. Side panels fit inside front and rear panel edges. Adjust front and rear panels’ positions to align edges before attaching side panels. Measure diagonal lengths front-to-back with tape measure, adjust clamps until diagonals are equal for square assembly.
Build the frameTighten joints firmlyAssembleSTEP 6 / 13Tip
- Unequal diagonal lengths distort shape into a parallelogram; use clamps to straighten until equal.
- Side panels are set inside front and rear; offset pilot holes slightly from board edges.
- Cutting corner posts at 45 degrees and mitering corners gives cleaner finish if desired.
Watch out
- Mismatched ventilation slit alignment between side and front/rear panels looks uneven.
- More than 5mm diagonal length error hampers smooth fitting of stored items.
- 7
Process and install bottom board
≈ 25 minDrill nine 20mm diameter ventilation holes evenly on lauan plywood 12mm bottom board (3 rows × 3 columns). Position holes at least 50mm from edges and 100mm apart. Insert bottom board into bottom frame, then secure with 45mm coarse-thread screws to the four corner posts.
Drill a hole下穴 φ3.5mmDrillSTEP 7 / 13Tip
- Vent holes are essential to release moisture from shoe soles; do not reduce number.
- Hole saw drills provide cleaner holes; wood spade drill bits are acceptable.
- Bottom board edges facing ground are not visible from outside so edge tape is unnecessary.
Watch out
- Warped bottom board prevents close fit to posts; check flatness prior and reverse board if warped, fixing with screws to flatten.
- Drilling holes too close to edges weakens strength; keep at least 50mm from edges.
- 8
Final check of right angles and diagonal lengths
≈ 15 minCheck assembled box for right angles and diagonal lengths. Use carpenter’s square to measure all four internal corners, noting deviation from 90 degrees. Measure two diagonal lengths with tape and confirm difference is within 2mm. If misaligned, loosen screws and use clamps to correct before tightening again.
InspectNo wobble ✓InspectSTEP 8 / 13Tip
- Diagonal length difference indicates assembly error; within 2mm is acceptable.
- Measure on level floor to avoid inaccurate readings.
- Check all screws are fully tightened by finger pressure.
Watch out
- Ignoring warping causes doors (lids) to operate poorly.
- Loose screws risk future wobbles or structural collapse under shoe load.
- 9
Surface preparation and sanding before painting
≈ 15 minLightly sand entire unit with #240 grit sandpaper, remove dust with damp cloth. Smooth uneven spots around screw heads and board edges. For outdoor use, easy-to-apply paints like wood preservatives such as Keshiradeccol or Osmo Color are recommended.
Sand#240SandSTEP 9 / 13Tip
- Cedar absorbs paint heavily; plan for two coats.
- Apply extra paint on cut ends as fibers are exposed and absorbent.
- Apply Keshiradeccol by rubbing with cloth for even finish rather than brush.
Watch out
- Rough sanding before painting causes uneven paint and fuzz.
- Painting without removing dust causes rough surface texture.
- 10
First coat of paint
≈ 30 minApply Keshiradeccol or water-based paint evenly on all surfaces. Use brush or rag and paint along wood grain in one direction. Allow to penetrate 15-20 minutes, then wipe excess with dry cloth. Paint ventilation slits by angling brush to avoid misses. Let dry naturally for at least 2 hours.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 10 / 13Tip
- Wiping after painting with Keshiradeccol enhances wood texture.
- Paint accumulating in ventilation slits slows drying; wipe thoroughly.
- For outdoor work, ensure good ventilation and open windows to dissipate fumes.
Watch out
- Skipping wiping causes stickiness lasting days; always wipe dry.
- Thick coats cause drying irregularities and eventual peeling; apply thin coats twice.
- 11
Intermediate sanding and second coat of paint
≈ 25 minAfter first coat dries, lightly sand surface with #320 grit sandpaper. Remove dust, then apply second coat thinner than first and wipe excess similarly. Let cure fully for 24 hours.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 11 / 13Tip
- Light sanding removes paint fuzz without removing film.
- Two coats significantly increase wood preservative effect; don't skip second.
- Keep drying area clean of dust.
Watch out
- Over-sanding removes first paint coat.
- Skipping second coat halves preservative effect, especially outdoors where moisture is present.
- 12
Attach foot pads and waterproofing measures
≈ 15 minAttach felt pads or non-slip rubber to bottom ends of corner posts. When setting directly on ground, raise by 10cm using bricks or blocks. For tile floors, silicone pads are recommended to prevent slipping.
Fix to the wallAnchor to studsInstallSTEP 12 / 13Tip
- Felt pads absorb water and get dirty; rubber or silicone recommended outdoors.
- Pads are essential on all four corner posts; omitting center causes tilting.
- Observe for one week after installation; ventilate until paint fumes dissipate.
Watch out
- No pads cause floor damage and slipping on wet surfaces.
- Silicone pads may have weak adhesive; use strong double-sided tape for secure attachment.
- 13
Final inspection and shoe storage
≈ 15 minCheck all screws tightened, ventilation slits evenly spaced, and paint finish uniform. Use level to check wobble; adjust pad thickness if necessary to level. Avoid placing heavy items for one week until paint fully cures. Store shoes dry inside.
Done!Done — nice work!DoneSTEP 13 / 13Tip
- Wipe wet shoes before storing to prevent moisture.
- Ideal storage volume is 80% capacity; overcrowding blocks ventilation.
- Monthly airing (empty, then dry with fan) prolongs durability.
Watch out
- Storing wet shoes before paint cures leaves shoe-shaped marks on paint.
- Overfilling causes deformation of boards.
Warnings
- ⚠️When used outdoors, application of wood preservative is essential (recommend repainting once a year).
- ⚠️Use stainless steel screws (iron screws will rust).
- ⚠️Drill pilot holes before screwing to prevent wood splitting.
- ⚠️Use paint that is safe if licked by pets (water-based urethane paint recommended).
