Build steps
- 1
Measure and Confirm Installation Location
≈ 15 minMeasure the installation space for the insulated pet house (700×600×700mm). Check the width of the space, ensure a walkway clearance of at least 600mm, and confirm the door opening range.
MeasureW 700 mmMeasureSTEP 1 / 13Tip
- Position so that it is not directly under rain gutters or over drainage.
- Leave at least a 20mm gap between walls and furniture for easier cleaning.
- Avoid border areas between wooden decks or soil and ground; these cause instability.
Watch out
- Cannot install if installation space is less than 700mm width; prior measurement is essential.
- Installation outdoors in high traffic areas may pose a trip hazard if parts protrude at foot level.
- 2
Create Parts Cutting List
≈ 30 minCut cedar board 19mm thick into front/rear boards (19×120×700mm) × 12 pieces each, and side boards (19×120×700mm) × 12 pieces each. Bottom board is 12mm Lauan plywood (12×562×662mm) × 1 piece. Corner posts are 2x4 lumber (38×89×700mm) × 4 pieces. Using paid cutting services at hardware stores is convenient.
CutUse the in-store cut serviceCutSTEP 2 / 13Tip
- Cedar boards vary greatly in knots and warps; select by hand individually.
- The 700mm corner posts length covers front and rear side boards height (120×4=480) plus 20mm margin.
- Cutting service allows specifying board grain alignment for better appearance.
Watch out
- Cut ends of cedar boards absorb water easily; prioritize applying wood preservative in later steps.
- 2x4 lumber actual size is 38×89mm; specify '38×89' explicitly when ordering cuts (nominal vs actual size differs).
- 3
Sand All Parts
≈ 40 minSand with #120 grit followed by #240 grit sandpaper. Cedar boards are soft and prone to warping and splinters; sand cut ends and surfaces carefully. Chamfer the edges of the 2x4 corner posts to prevent snagging shoes or injury.
Sand#120SandSTEP 3 / 13Tip
- Cedar grain is coarse; always sand along the wood grain to avoid raising splinters.
- Use #120 grit to smooth cut ends flat, then finish with #240; skipping this causes uneven paint absorption.
- Using an orbital sander reduces sanding time to one-third; consider renting one.
Watch out
- Sanding produces large amounts of dust; perform in ventilated areas such as balconies or garages.
- If dust isn't removed before painting, surface will feel rough. Use air duster or damp cloth to clean.
- 4
Stand Up and Temporarily Fix Corner Posts
≈ 25 minVertically stand four 2x4 posts and place at the four corners of the workbench. Temporarily clamp to the workbench to keep top and bottom level. Use a level to check verticality. Measure inside spacing so front to back is 600mm and side to side is 300mm using a tape measure.
Build the frameTighten joints firmlyAssembleSTEP 4 / 13Tip
- Check verticality on two faces (front and side) with the level aiming for zero.
- Concrete floors or cushioned vinyl have unevenness; place plywood to create a flat work surface.
- Align knots facing the same direction on all posts for better appearance and rotate during placement to adjust.
Watch out
- If even one post is not vertical, the final front and rear boards will incline.
- Be consistent measuring inside or outside edges of posts; inconsistency causes 5-10mm dimension errors.
- 5
Attach Front and Rear Boards (Starting from Bottom)
≈ 40 minPlace the first cedar board horizontally at the lowest front position. Apply wood glue to the corner posts on left and right sides, then fasten with 65mm coarse-thread screws: two screws per side (total of four). For subsequent boards, stack with 5mm ventilation slits (about the thickness of one chopstick) between each. Of 10 boards, 5 form the front and 5 form the rear.
Build the frameTighten joints firmlyAssembleSTEP 5 / 13Tip
- 5mm ventilation slits help prevent moisture in shoes; tightly joining boards causes dampness and mold.
- Use chopsticks to maintain uniform spacing for the slits.
- Drill pilot holes (4mm diameter) near corner posts before screwing to prevent splits.
Watch out
- Screwing 65mm screws without pilot holes splits cedar boards; always drill pilot holes.
- Overdriving screws causes surface indentation; stop flush with board surface.
- 6
Attach Side Boards (Left and Right)
≈ 35 minAttach left and right side boards (19×120×700mm) × 12 pieces similarly, inserting 5mm slits. Attach 5 per side. Adjust front and rear board positions to align edges for a tight corner joint before fixing side boards. Measure diagonal lengths (front to rear diagonals) and ensure equal lengths while fastening.
Build the frameTighten joints firmlyAssembleSTEP 6 / 13Tip
- Unequal diagonal lengths cause parallelogram distortion; use clamps to correct until equal.
- Side boards fit inside front and rear boards; pilot holes should be offset slightly from front/rear board edges.
- If corner gaps are a concern, trim corner posts at 45 degrees before attaching for a neat finish.
Watch out
- If side board ventilation slit positions don't match front/rear, appearance is inconsistent.
- Diagonal measurement error over 5mm hinders smooth shoe storage.
- 7
Process and Attach Bottom Board
≈ 25 minDrill nine φ20mm ventilation holes evenly spaced in the 12mm Lauan plywood bottom board (262×562mm). Position holes at least 50mm from board edges and at least 100mm apart. Insert bottom board under the box frame and fix to four posts with 45mm coarse-thread screws.
Drill a holeφ20mmDrillSTEP 7 / 13Tip
- Ventilation holes allow shoe sole moisture to escape; do not reduce hole count.
- Use a hole saw for clean holes; wood drill bits are also acceptable.
- No edge tape is needed on bottom board as ground side is not visible from outside.
Watch out
- Warped bottom board may not touch posts evenly; check flatness first, and if warping is severe, orient board reversed and fix with screws to correct.
- Positioning holes too close to edges reduces structural strength; keep 50mm minimum distance.
- 8
Final Check of Right Angles and Diagonals
≈ 15 minConfirm right angles and diagonal lengths of the assembled box. Use a carpenter's square to measure all four inside corners and check deviation from 90 degrees. Measure two diagonals with a tape measure and confirm the difference is within 2mm. If skewed, loosen screws and use clamps to correct before retightening.
InspectNo wobble ✓InspectSTEP 8 / 13Tip
- Diagonal difference indicates assembly accuracy; within 2mm is acceptable for practical use.
- Measurement should be performed on a level surface to avoid false results.
- Check all screws by hand to ensure none are loose or improperly inserted.
Watch out
- Ignoring distortion causes lids/doors to not open/close smoothly later.
- Loose screws risk wobbling or structural failure under shoe load.
- 9
Prepare Surface and Sand Lightly Before Painting
≈ 15 minLightly sand the entire surface with #240 sandpaper before painting, then remove dust with a damp cloth. Even out gaps around screw heads and cut edges. Since it will be outdoors, wood preservatives like Xyladecor or Osmo Color are suitable.
Sand#240SandSTEP 9 / 13Tip
- Cedar absorbs paint heavily; plan for two coats.
- Apply extra paint to cut ends as fibers are exposed and absorbent.
- Apply Xyladecor by rubbing in with cloth for a more uniform finish than brushing.
Watch out
- Coarse sanding before painting causes uneven paint and fuzziness.
- Applying paint without removing dust results in rough texture.
- 10
First Coat of Paint
≈ 30 minApply Xyladecor or water-based paint over the entire surface. Use a brush or rag to paint in one direction along the grain. Let sit for 15-20 minutes to penetrate, then wipe excess with a dry cloth. Paint ventilation slits by brushing in diagonal strokes to avoid missing spots. Let dry naturally for at least 2 hours.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 10 / 13Tip
- The 'paint and wipe' method enhances wood texture with Xyladecor.
- Removing paint buildup in ventilation slits prevents delayed drying; wipe gently.
- For outdoor work, ensure good ventilation and open windows to avoid fumes.
Watch out
- Failing to wipe off excess leaves tacky spots for days; always wipe with dry cloth.
- Applying thick coats causes uneven drying and later peeling; thin two coats are key.
- 11
Light Sanding and Second Coat
≈ 25 minAfter the first coat dries, lightly sand with #320 sandpaper (scuff sanding). Remove dust, then apply a slightly thinner second coat and wipe off excess similarly. Let cure fully for 24 hours.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 11 / 13Tip
- Scuff sanding removes only fuzzy raised paint without removing the film.
- Two coats greatly increase wood preservation; do not skip second coat.
- Place painted parts in dust-free areas during drying.
Watch out
- Too aggressive sanding removes first paint film.
- Skipping second coat halves preservation effect, especially important for wet outdoor locations.
- 12
Attach Foot Pads and Waterproofing
≈ 15 minAttach felt pads or anti-slip rubber pads to the bottom of corner posts. If placing directly on the ground, raise on bricks or blocks 10cm. For tile surfaces, use silicone pads to prevent slipping.
Fix to the wallAnchor to studsInstallSTEP 12 / 13Tip
- Felt absorbs water and stains; rubber or silicone recommended outdoors.
- Pads are essential on all four corner posts; omitting center causes tilting.
- Ventilate for one week after installation until paint fumes dissipate.
Watch out
- No pads cause floor damage and slipping on wet floors.
- Some silicone pads have weak adhesive; using strong double-sided tape is recommended.
- 13
Final Inspection and Shoe Storage
≈ 15 minCheck that all screws are tightened, ventilation slits are uniform, and paint has no unevenness. Use a level to check for wobbling, correct with changing pad thickness if necessary. Avoid placing heavy items for one week until paint fully hardens. Store only dry shoes.
Done!Done — nice work!DoneSTEP 13 / 13Tip
- Wipe wet shoes before storing to prevent moisture buildup.
- Ideal storage capacity is 80% full to maintain ventilation.
- Ventilate monthly by removing contents and drying with a fan to prolong life.
Watch out
- Storing wet shoes before paint cures leaves shoe shape impressions on paint film.
- Overfilling forcibly deforms boards.
Warnings
- ⚠️If used outdoors, applying wood preservative paint is essential (recoating once a year recommended).
- ⚠️Use stainless steel screws (iron screws will rust).
- ⚠️Drill pilot holes before screwing to prevent wood splitting.
- ⚠️Use paint that is safe for pets to lick (water-based urethane paint recommended).
