Measure and Confirm Installation Location
≈ 15 minMeasure the installation space for the dog house with veranda (1200×700×750mm). Confirm the width of the space, ensure a passage clearance of 600mm or more, and check the door opening range.
MeasureW 1200 mmMeasureSTEP 1 / 13Tip
- Arrange so as not to be directly under rain gutters or overdrainage.
- Leave at least a 20mm gap between walls and furniture for easier cleaning.
- Avoid the boundary between wood decking or soil and ground to prevent wobbling.
Watch out
- If the installation space is less than 1200mm wide, installation is impossible; pre-measuring is important.
- Outdoor installation spots with heavy foot traffic pose tripping risks if placed protruding on the floor.
- 2
Create Cut List for Materials
≈ 30 minCut 19mm-thick cedar boards into front and back boards (19×120×1200mm) ×14 pieces, side boards (19×120×700mm) ×14 pieces. The bottom board is a single piece of 12mm Lauan plywood (12×662×1162mm). Prepare 2×4 lumber corner posts (38×89×750mm) ×4 pieces. Using a home center's paid cutting service is convenient.
CutUse the in-store cut serviceCutSTEP 2 / 13Tip
- Cedar boards vary greatly in knots and warping; select each board individually.
- The corner post length of 750mm includes the height of four stacked front/back boards (120×4=480mm) plus a 20mm margin.
- When using cutting services, specify aligning wood grain directions for better appearance.
Watch out
- Cut ends (wood ends) of cedar boards absorb water readily; apply wood preservative thoroughly in later steps.
- The 2x4 lumber's actual size is 38×89mm. Specify “38×89” when requesting cuts, as nominal and actual sizes differ.
- 3
Sand All Materials
≈ 40 minSand with #120 grit, then #240 grit sandpaper in sequence. Cedar boards are soft and prone to warping and splinters; pay special attention to wood ends and surfaces. The 2x4 corner posts should have chamfered edges to prevent shoes catching or injury, making surfaces smooth.
Sand#120SandSTEP 3 / 13Tip
- Cedar grain is coarse; sand along the grain direction to avoid splinters.
- Sand wood ends flat with #120 first, then smooth with #240. Skipping this causes uneven paint adhesion.
- Using an orbital sander reduces sanding time to one-third; consider tool rental services.
Watch out
- Sanding produces large amounts of dust; work in ventilated areas such as balconies or garages.
- If dust is not removed before painting, surfaces feel rough; remove with air duster or damp cloth.
- 4
Set Up Corner Posts Vertically and Temporarily Fix
≈ 25 minStand four 2×4 posts vertically and arrange them at the four corners of the workbench. Temporarily clamp them to the bench to level top and bottom. Use a level to confirm verticality. Measure spacing so that the inner distances are 600mm front-to-back and 300mm side-to-side with a measuring tape.
Build the frameTighten joints firmlyAssembleSTEP 4 / 13Tip
- Check verticality on two planes (front and side) with a level aiming for zero on both.
- Concrete or cushioned floors have unevenness; place plywood to make a flat working surface.
- Arrange to have knots oriented the same on all four posts for better appearance. Rotate as needed.
Watch out
- If even one post is not vertical, front, back, left and right boards will be tilted after assembly.
- Inconsistent measuring reference (inside or outside edges) when measuring spacing causes 5-10mm errors.
- 5
Attach Front and Back Boards (from bottom layer)
≈ 40 minPlace the first cedar board horizontally at the bottom front, apply wood glue on the left and right corner posts and fix with 65mm coarse-thread screws: 2 screws per side (4 total). Stack subsequent boards leaving a 5mm ventilation slit (spaced using a chopstick) between boards. Out of 10 boards, attach 5 on the front and 5 on the back.
Build the frameTighten joints firmlyAssembleSTEP 5 / 13Tip
- The 5mm ventilation slit prevents shoe moisture buildup; no sealing to avoid mold.
- Use a chopstick between boards to keep slits even.
- Drill φ4mm pilot holes on the corner post side before screwing to prevent splitting.
Watch out
- Screwing 65mm screws without pilot holes splits cedar boards; always drill pilot holes.
- Driving screws too deep dents the board surface; stop flush with the surface.
- 6
Attach Side Boards (left and right)
≈ 35 minAttach both side boards (19×120×700mm) ×14 pieces similarly, spacing with slits. Attach 5 boards on each side. Adjust the position of front and back boards first so the wood ends meet tightly at corners, then attach side boards. Measure the front-to-back diagonal lengths with tape measure and proceed fixing while making both diagonals equal.
Build the frameTighten joints firmlyAssembleSTEP 6 / 13Tip
- Mismatch in diagonal lengths causes parallelogram distortion; clamp and adjust until equal.
- Side boards fit inside the front/back boards, so offset pilot holes a bit from the ends of front/back boards.
- If corner fit is difficult, cutting corner posts at 45 degrees before fastening gives a better finish.
Watch out
- If ventilation slits on side boards do not match front/back boards, appearance is inconsistent.
- More than 5mm error in diagonals prevents smooth storage fit.
- 7
Process and Attach Bottom Board
≈ 25 minUsing a φ20mm drill bit, drill nine evenly spaced ventilation holes (3 rows of 3) on the 12mm Lauan plywood bottom board (262×562mm). Holes must be at least 50mm from board edges and at least 100mm apart. Slide the bottom board into the box bottom and fix with 45mm coarse-thread screws to the four corner posts.
Drill a holeφ20mmDrillSTEP 7 / 13Tip
- Ventilation holes allow shoe sole moisture to escape; do not reduce their number.
- If available, use a hole saw for clean holes; a woodworking drill bit is acceptable.
- Since the bottom faces the ground and is not visible externally, wood edge tape is unnecessary.
Watch out
- If the bottom board is warped, it won't fit snugly to posts; confirm flatness first. For significant warp, orient board reverse side up and clamp during screwing to correct.
- Placing holes too close to board edges weakens strength; keep holes at least 50mm from edges.
- 8
Final Check of Right Angles and Diagonals
≈ 15 minConfirm right angles and diagonal lengths of the assembled box. Measure four internal corners with a carpenter's square and check deviation from 90°. Measure both diagonals with tape measure and ensure difference is within 2mm. If misaligned, loosen screws, use clamps to adjust, then re-tighten screws.
InspectNo wobble ✓InspectSTEP 8 / 13Tip
- Diagonal difference indicates assembly error; within 2mm is acceptable for practical use.
- Measurements can be distorted if floor is not level; check on a level surface.
- Check all screws for looseness by hand.
Watch out
- Ignoring distortion causes door/lid malfunction.
- Loose screws risk wobbling and structural failure under shoe load over time.
- 9
Painting Prep and Sanding
≈ 15 minBefore painting, lightly sand the entire surface with #240 grit sandpaper and remove dust with a damp cloth. Even out screw heads and wood end level differences. For outdoor use, wood preservatives like Xyladecor or Osmo Color are user-friendly.
Sand#240SandSTEP 9 / 13Tip
- Cedar absorbs paint heavily; two coats are assumed.
- Apply extra paint on wood ends; cut surfaces expose fibers and absorb well.
- Xyladecor is applied by rubbing with cloth, which yields more even finish than brushing.
Watch out
- Coarse sanding before painting causes paint unevenness and fuzziness.
- Painting over remaining dust results in rough texture.
- 10
First Coat of Paint
≈ 30 minApply Xyladecor or water-based paint over entire surface. Use a brush or cloth, paint in one direction along the grain, let it penetrate for 15-20 minutes, then wipe off excess with a dry cloth. Paint ventilation slits by brushing diagonally to avoid misses. Allow natural drying for over 2 hours.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 10 / 13Tip
- The 'paint and wipe' method of Xyladecor accentuates the wood grain texture.
- Paint pooling slows drying in ventilated slits; wipe carefully.
- For outdoor work, ensure ventilation and open windows to manage fumes.
Watch out
- Not wiping off causes stickiness for several days; always wipe with dry cloth.
- Over-thick coats cause uneven drying and subsequent peeling; apply two thin coats.
- 11
Intermediate Sanding and Second Coat
≈ 25 minAfter the first coat dries, lightly sand the surface with #320 sandpaper (intermediate sanding). Remove dust and apply the second coat thinner than the first, wiping similarly. Allow 24 hours for full curing.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 11 / 13Tip
- Intermediate sanding smooths paint fuzz without removing the coating.
- Two coats greatly increase wood preservation; do not skip.
- Keep drying area free of dust.
Watch out
- Excessive sanding removes first coat paint film.
- Skipping second coat halves protective effect, especially critical for outdoor installations.
- 12
Foot Pads and Waterproofing Measures
≈ 15 minAttach felt pads or non-slip rubber pads to the bottom of the corner posts. When placing directly on the ground, raise the dog house 10cm on bricks or blocks. For tile floors, silicon pads are recommended to prevent slipping.
Fix to the wallAnchor to studsInstallSTEP 12 / 13Tip
- Felt absorbs water and gets dirty; rubber/silicone pads are preferred outdoors.
- Pads on all four corner posts are essential; omitting the center causes tilting.
- After installation, monitor for a week while ventilation continues until paint fumes dissipate.
Watch out
- Without pads, floors get scratched and slippery when wet.
- Some silicone pads have weak adhesion; combining with strong double-sided tape is safer.
- 13
Final Inspection and Shoe Storage
≈ 15 minCheck all screw tightness, uniformity of ventilation slits, and paint uniformity. Use a level to verify no wobbling; if adjustment is needed, vary pad thickness for leveling. Avoid placing heavy objects for one week until paint fully cures. Store shoes dry.
Done!Done — nice work!DoneSTEP 13 / 13Tip
- Wipe off water from shoes if wet before storage to prevent moisture build-up.
- Store up to 80% of capacity; full load impairs ventilation.
- Ventilate monthly by emptying entirely and use a fan to dry for longevity.
Watch out
- Storing wet shoes before paint curing leaves shoe-shaped marks on paint.
- Overfilling forces deformation of boards.
Warnings
- ⚠️For outdoor use, applying wood preservative is essential (annual reapplication recommended).
- ⚠️Use stainless steel screws (iron screws will rust).
- ⚠️Drill pilot holes before screwing to prevent wood splitting.
- ⚠️Use paint safe if licked by pets (water-based urethane paint recommended).
