Final Confirmation of Materials and Tools
≈ 15 minPrepare two side boards of SPF lumber 1×10 (19×300×1800mm), six shelf boards (19×300×700mm), one 4mm plywood back panel (700×1800mm), 48 pieces of 38mm coarse-thread screws, and four 50mm L-brackets. Tools include an electric driver, saw, measuring tape, carpenter's square, #120/#240 sandpaper, level, two F-type clamps, brush and paint tray, and a stapler or small nails.
MeasureW 700 mmMeasureSTEP 1 / 20Tip
- SPF lumber tends to warp. Check each piece's warp by eye when purchasing and select those with warp within 1mm.
- The L-brackets and screws are essential safety measures against tipping. Do not omit them.
Watch out
- When purchasing SPF lumber, inspect each piece for warp, cracks, and knots. Incorporating lumber warped over 1mm causes shelf boards to distort.
- The 4mm plywood back panel is thin and prone to breaking during transport. Store it upright immediately after cutting.
- 2
Securing the Work Space
≈ 10 minEnsure a workspace where an 1800mm tall bookshelf can be assembled upright. Ceiling height should be 2200mm or higher, with a floor area about 1500×1200mm for comfortable work. Lay a blue tarp and support long pieces on two saw horses.
InspectNo wobble ✓InspectSTEP 2 / 20Tip
- Assembly is performed with the bookshelf lying on the floor; standing it up is the final step. Even small rooms can accommodate this process.
Watch out
- It is difficult for one person to stand up the assembled bookshelf safely. Two people are recommended.
- If ceiling height is below 2000mm, the bookshelf will hit the ceiling when stood up. Check dimensions beforehand.
- 3
Creating a Cut List and Cutting Request
≈ 20 minSubmit a cut list for two side boards (1800mm), six shelf boards (700mm), and one back panel (700×1800mm) to the home center. If cutting yourself, support the long lumber with two saw horses and cut with a pulling stroke. Aim for cutting tolerance within ±2mm.
CutUse the in-store cut serviceCutSTEP 3 / 20Tip
- Cutting fee is about 30-50 yen per cut. Having all cuts done costs around 1000 yen and reduces cutting time from 30 minutes to instant.
- Since the six shelf boards share the same dimensions, bundling them and cutting all at once yields best accuracy.
Watch out
- SPF lumber of 19mm thickness warps easily even with straight cuts. Use guides to ensure straight cuts.
- The 4mm plywood is soft and warps upward during cutting if not properly supported underneath.
- 4
Sanding All Materials (#120 then #240)
≈ 40 minSand all parts first with #120 then #240 grit sandpaper. Pay special attention to the shelf support surfaces of side boards, the top and bottom of shelf boards, and the cut edges. Rounding shelf edges where hands touch improves handling. Clean all wood dust thoroughly with a vacuum after sanding.
Sand#120SandSTEP 4 / 20Tip
- Smooth finish on shelf board surfaces allows easy placement and removal of books.
- Cut edges' wood fibers tend to raise; begin sanding #120 grit carefully there.
Watch out
- SPF lumber is soft; excessive sanding changes dimensions. Use #120 grit chiefly, #240 only for finishing.
- Over-rounding edges looks unsightly; limit radius to about 2mm.
- 5
Marking Shelf Positions on Side Boards
≈ 15 minPlace the two side boards side-by-side and mark the positions for six shelf boards with a pencil. The space between shelves can be 300mm evenly up to total 1800mm, or adjust upper section wider for decoration per design. Align the left and right side boards carefully and mark both simultaneously.
Mark a lineUse a try squareMarkSTEP 5 / 20Tip
- Clamp the two side boards together before marking to ensure exact alignment of shelf positions.
- Plan shelf spacing based on book sizes like A4 (297mm), A5 (210mm), and Bunkobon (150mm) for easy storage.
Watch out
- Mismatched shelf positions cause angled shelf boards. Always clamp and mark simultaneously.
- Ignoring the 19mm thickness of shelf boards when calculating spacing results in shelves fitting too snugly.
- 6
Preparing Pilot Holes
≈ 20 minDrill 3mm diameter pilot holes at marked positions. Drill from the outside face of side boards through into the shelf board ends. Use masking tape on the drill bit as a depth guide. Depth should be 29mm total: 19mm side board thickness plus 10mm into shelf board.
Drill a hole下穴 φ3.5mmDrillSTEP 6 / 20Tip
- A 3mm pilot hole matches about 70% of the 4.2mm screw shaft diameter, effectively preventing wood splitting.
- For each shelf board, drill two pilot holes on each side board, total 24 holes for six shelves; use a checklist to avoid missing any.
Watch out
- Insufficient pilot hole depth prevents screw from fully seating; drill slightly deeper than calculated for safety.
- Avoid drilling fully through the shelf board; the masking tape depth guide prevents this.
- 7
Temporarily Fixing Shelf Boards to One Side Board
≈ 20 minLay one side board flat on the floor and stand the six shelf boards upright at marked positions. Temporarily fix with F-clamps and check right angles between side and shelf boards using a carpenter's square. Where square cannot be inserted, check visually.
Build the frameCheck for squareAssembleSTEP 7 / 20Tip
- Assemble shelves sequentially from bottom to top for stability.
- One clamp per shelf board is ideal; having six clamps speeds work, but two clamps used in sequence also suffice.
Watch out
- Fixing with incorrect right angles results in parallelogram distortion. Always verify with a carpenter's square.
- Shelf boards protruding beyond side board edges prevent later back panel installation.
- 8
Screwing Shelves on One Side
≈ 15 minDrive 38mm coarse-thread screws through the pilot holes from the outside of the side board into the shelf board ends. Use two screws per location, two locations per shelf, twelve screws total. Countersink screw heads flush or about 0.5mm below side board surface. Set electric driver torque to medium; finish tightening by hand with quarter turn.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 8 / 20Tip
- Offset pairs of screws slightly vertically to increase holding strength.
- If screw holes are conspicuous, they can be concealed later with wood dowel plugs (optional).
Watch out
- Over-tightening causes 19mm SPF lumber ends to split; use medium torque.
- Screws entering angled and protruding from the opposite side must be removed, hole filled with wood filler, and re-driven in a new location.
- 9
Preparing to Attach the Opposite Side Board
≈ 15 minStand the partially assembled shelf upright and position the other side board on the opposite side. Align the opposite ends of shelf boards with marked lines on side boards and clamp temporarily. Confirm all right angles while the assembly is standing straight.
Build the frameCheck for squareAssembleSTEP 9 / 20Tip
- Two-person work recommended: one holds while the other clamps for accuracy.
- Markings on the opposite side board are pre-made; do not re-mark.
Watch out
- Trying to do this step alone risks shelf boards falling to the ground. Always have two people or rested against a wall.
- 10
Screwing Opposite Side Board
≈ 15 minDrive 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes from the outside of the opposite side board side into shelf board ends. Use two screws per location, twelve screws total for six shelves. This completes fixing of side boards and shelf boards, completing main bookshelf structure.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 10 / 20Tip
- After securing both sides, use a level to check each shelf is horizontal. If any shelf is tilted, loosen screws to adjust then retighten.
Watch out
- Driving screws on both sides simultaneously causes distortion. Always fix one side completely before the other.
- 11
Checking Overall Level and Diagonal Measurements
≈ 15 minPlace the assembled bookshelf on the floor and check each shelf's level with a level. Measure diagonals from left top to right bottom and right top to left bottom; the difference should be within 5mm. If distorted, loosen clamps and adjust, then add screws to secure.
Check levelLevel ✓LevelSTEP 11 / 20Tip
- Diagonal difference larger than 5mm indicates parallelogram distortion; correct before attaching back panel.
- Back panel enhances rigidity; fix distortions before installing it.
Watch out
- Shelf boards sagging in the center worsens with book weight. Length up to 600mm is acceptable; longer than 1000mm may need reinforcement.
- 12
Preparing to Attach Back Panel
≈ 10 minPlace the 4mm plywood back panel (700×1800mm) on the bookshelf back matching corners. Confirm diagonal lengths of back panel and bookshelf match to ensure final correction of distortions. Once positioned, secure temporarily with painter's tape.
Build the frameCheck for squareAssembleSTEP 12 / 20Tip
- Back panel is critical for preventing distortion. Installing crookedly reduces stiffness.
- The thin plywood can be easily stapled; if using nails, pilot holes are recommended.
Watch out
- If back panel is larger, trim excess. If smaller, leave a uniform gap within 5mm at edges.
- 13
Stapling Back Panel
≈ 20 minAttach back panel to side and shelf boards with 15mm staples from a stapler or fine nails. Staple spacing should be 100-150mm around the perimeter and over shelf positions. Start stapling at corners then diagonally to prevent warping.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 13 / 20Tip
- A stapler costs 1500-2500 yen at home centers but greatly speeds this step, worth investing for bookshelf making.
- Mark shelf board positions on back panel with pencil to avoid missing staples.
Watch out
- Staples protruding inside may damage books; use 15mm staples which are suitable for 19mm lumber thickness.
- Staples only along four edges without staples near shelf positions cause back panel to bow.
- 14
Preparing for L-bracket Installation
≈ 15 minPrepare four 50mm L-brackets: two for each side at the upper back area. One side attaches to bookshelf top edge, the other to wall studs. Locate wall studs with a stud finder before installation.
Fix to the wallAnchor to studsWall mountSTEP 14 / 20Tip
- Low-cost stud finders from 100-yen stores have low accuracy; home center models priced 1000-2000 yen are recommended.
- Studs are usually spaced at 455mm; spotting one helps locate others.
Watch out
- Drywall only walls do not provide secure anchorage; screws must enter studs to prevent tipping.
- If bracket position conflicts with studs, adjust position to align bracket screw holes with stud centers.
- 15
Attaching L-brackets to Bookshelf
≈ 10 minAttach the four L-brackets to the outside upper portions of side boards. Use 38mm coarse-thread screws through the bracket screw holes. Position brackets flush or within 5mm inset from side board surface and ensure they project perpendicularly to the wall side.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 15 / 20Tip
- Ensure bracket bend faces the wall and screw holes face the bookshelf for correct orientation.
Watch out
- Misaligned brackets cause gaps between bracket and wall upon fixing. Use a level to verify alignment.
- 16
Bookshelf Installation and Wall Fixing
≈ 20 minCarry the bookshelf upright to the installation location (two people recommended). Push the bookshelf tightly against the wall, drive 45-50mm coarse-thread screws through L-bracket wall-side holes into studs. Secure all four points to complete tipping prevention.
Fix to the wallAnchor to studsWall mountSTEP 16 / 20Tip
- Screws 38mm long are too short for studs; use 45-50mm screws either included or purchased separately.
- Wall fixing is the most critical step; neglecting it risks injury or suffocation during earthquakes.
Watch out
- Drywall anchors alone lack sufficient strength; screws must penetrate studs.
- If gaps exceed 5mm between bookshelf and wall, insert shims before screwing. Leaving gaps disables bracket effectiveness.
- 17
Cleaning Before Painting
≈ 10 minVacuum and wipe the entire bookshelf with dry cloth to remove all wood dust, oil, and fingerprints. Cleanliness before painting significantly impacts finish quality. Optionally, mask the plywood back panel as it absorbs paint quickly.
InspectNo wobble ✓InspectSTEP 17 / 20Tip
- Perform a three-step wiping: dry cloth, damp cloth, then dry cloth for perfect cleanliness.
Watch out
- Residual wood dust causes rough paint surfaces; check under light thoroughly.
- 18
First Coat of Oil Stain
≈ 40 minApply oil stain (Watco Oil, Kinura, etc.) evenly with a brush in the order: outer side of side boards, shelf board front, shelf board backs, then back panel. After 10-15 minutes, wipe off excess with a dry cloth. The first coat consumes 60-70% of total oil stain amount.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 18 / 20Tip
- Apply oil stain, wait 10-15 minutes, then wipe off to prevent tackiness.
- Use 30-50mm wide brush optimal for bookshelf; overly large brushes fail to reach details.
Watch out
- Skipping wiping causes sticky surfaces for over a week; always wipe off.
- Plywood back panel absorbs quickly and can become blotchy; apply thinly and wipe carefully.
- 19
Second Coat of Oil Stain
≈ 25 minAfter drying first coat for 24 hours, apply second coat in a thinner layer (about one-third to half the amount used first). Wipe off excess oil stain. Two coats deepen color and increase protection. Allow full drying for 24-48 hours.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 19 / 20Tip
- The second coat corrects color unevenness. Apply evenly and thinly.
- An optional third coat can be added for darker color.
Watch out
- Wiping is still necessary to avoid blotches.
- Keep drying area clean and indoors to prevent dust and insects attaching.
- 20
Completion, Use, and Inspection
≈ 15 minAfter full drying for 48 hours, place books and start use. Place heavy books on lower shelves and light books on upper shelves for stability. After one week in use, recheck screw tightness and L-bracket fixes; retighten if necessary.
Done!Done — nice work!DoneSTEP 20 / 20Tip
- Place heavy books (encyclopedias etc.) on the bottom two shelves. Use light paperback and manga on top shelves.
- Reapply oil every 3-5 years to restore gloss and protection.
Watch out
- Placing books immediately after finishing risks staining them with oil. Wait at least 48 hours.
- Books absorb moisture; use dehumidifiers during rainy seasons to prevent bookshelf warping.
Warnings
- ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
