Build steps

  1. 1

Final Check of Materials and Tools

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare two side boards of SPF lumber 1x10 (19×400×1800mm), six shelf boards (19×400×900mm), one plywood back board (4mm thick, 900×1800mm), forty-eight 38mm coarse-thread screws, and four 50mm L-shaped brackets. Tools include electric screwdriver, saw, tape measure, carpenter's square, #120 and #240 sandpaper, level, two F-clamps, brush and paint tray, and a stapler or small nails.

    Measure
    W 900 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 20

    Tip

    • SPF lumber tends to warp. Check each board visually when purchasing, select boards warped less than 1mm.
    • L-shaped brackets and screws are essential for preventing tipping. Do not omit them.

    Watch out

    • Check each SPF board for warping, cracks, and knots before purchase. Using boards warped more than 1mm causes shelf distortion.
    • The 4mm plywood back board is thin and fragile; handle carefully and store upright right after cutting to avoid breakage.
  2. 2

    Securing the Workspace

    ≈ 10 min

Secure a workspace to stand a 1800mm tall bookshelf. Ensure ceiling height above 2200mm and floor space about 1500×1200mm. Lay a blue tarp and support long lumber on two sawhorses.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 2 / 20

    Tip

    • Assemble laying the bookshelf on the floor; stand it up only at the last step. This allows assembly even in narrow rooms.

    Watch out

    • It is difficult for one person to stand the assembled bookshelf safely; two-person work is recommended.
    • If ceiling height is under 2000mm, the bookshelf will hit the ceiling when standing; check beforehand.
  3. 3

Create Cut List and Request Cutting

    ≈ 20 min

Submit cut list to home center: two side boards (1800mm), six shelf boards (900mm), one back board (900×1800mm). If cutting yourself, support long boards with two sawhorses and use push cuts. Aim for cut tolerance within ±2mm.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 3 / 20

    Tip

    • Cutting service costs about 30-50 yen per cut; total about 1000 yen, reducing time from 30 minutes to immediate.
    • Bundle six identical shelf boards and cut all at once for best accuracy.

    Watch out

    • 19mm thick SPF lumber warps easily even with straight cuts; use a guide for straight cuts.
    • 4mm plywood is soft; support underneath during cutting to prevent warping and distortion.
  4. 4

Sanding All Components (#120 then #240)

    ≈ 40 min

Sand all parts starting with #120 then finishing with #240 sandpaper. Pay special attention to the shelf support surfaces on side boards, upper and lower surfaces of shelf boards, and the cut edges. Rounding the edges of shelves makes handling easier. Vacuum wood dust completely after sanding.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 4 / 20

    Tip

    • A smooth shelf surface facilitates smooth book handling.
    • Cut edges have raised fibers; sand carefully starting with #120 grit.

    Watch out

    • SPF lumber is soft; avoid over-sanding which changes dimensions. Use #120 for most sanding and #240 only for finishing.
    • Over-rounding corners looks clumsy; keep radius around 2mm.
  5. 5

Mark Shelf Positions on Side Boards

    ≈ 15 min

Place the two side boards side-by-side and mark positions for six shelf boards with a pencil. Shelf spacing from bottom is 300mm intervals for six shelves (total 1800mm), or adjust with wider decorative spacing at top as designed. Clamp the two side boards together and mark simultaneously to ensure perfect matching positions.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 5 / 20

    Tip

    • Clamping the two side boards together before marking ensures shelf positions line up perfectly.
    • Use heights of A4 (297mm), A5 (210mm), and Bunko (150mm) books as reference for shelf spacing for convenient storage.

    Watch out

    • Mismatched shelf positions cause shelves to be installed askew; simultaneous marking while clamped is mandatory.
    • Do not forget to include the 19mm shelf board thickness when calculating spacing; otherwise actual space is too narrow.
  6. 6

    Prepare Pilot Holes

    ≈ 20 min

Drill 3mm diameter pilot holes at the marked positions. The pilot holes go through the side board from outside toward the shelf board's end grain. Apply masking tape on the drill bit to mark depth; drill through the 19mm side board and insert 10mm into shelf board (total 29mm depth).

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 6 / 20

    Tip

    • 3mm pilot holes correspond to about 70% of the 4.2mm coarse-thread screw shaft diameter, preventing wood splitting.
    • For each shelf board, drill 2 pilot holes on both side boards = 6 shelves × 4 holes = 24 total; double-check to avoid omissions.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient pilot hole depth prevents the screw from fully seating; drill slightly deeper for safety.
    • Avoid drilling entirely through the shelf board; use tape depth marker to limit penetration.
  7. 7

Temporarily Fix Shelf Boards to One Side Board

    ≈ 20 min

Lay one side board flat on the floor and stand the six shelf boards at the marked positions. Use F-clamps to temporarily fix them. Check that side board and shelf boards form right angles with carpenter's square. For areas where square cannot fit, verify visually.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 20

    Tip

    • Start from lower shelves upwards to maintain stability.
    • One clamp per shelf board is ideal (6 clamps). If fewer clamps, work sequentially with 2 clamps.

    Watch out

    • If right angles are incorrect during fixing, the entire structure becomes a parallelogram; always verify with square.
    • Shelf boards protruding beyond the edge of the side board prevents back board installation later.
  8. 8

    Screw Fix One Side

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes, two screws per shelf position, total 12 screws (6 shelves × 2). Screw heads should be flush with or recessed about 0.5mm into side board. Set electric screwdriver torque to medium and finish tightening by hand with quarter turn.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 8 / 20

    Tip

    • Slightly offset two screws vertically on each shelf joint to increase withdrawal strength.
    • If screw heads are visually prominent, optionally fill with wood dowels afterwards.

    Watch out

    • Over-tightening screws in 19mm thick SPF lumber causes end grain cracking; stop at medium torque.
    • If screws enter at an angle and protrude through opposite side, remove, fill holes with wood filler, and redo at different position.
  9. 9

Prepare to Attach Opposite Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Stand up the assembly with one side fixed, and position the other side board against the opposite ends of the shelf boards. Align the shelf board ends with the marked positions on this side board and clamp temporarily. Verify the entire unit is plumb and square.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 9 / 20

    Tip

    • This step is best done with two people: one holding the assembly and one clamping for accuracy.
    • The marked lines on the opposite side board were done earlier; no need to remark.

    Watch out

    • Attempting this alone may cause shelf boards to fall off and damage the floor; always work with two people or brace against a wall.
  10. 10

    Screw Fix Opposite Side

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes on the opposite side board, two screws per shelf, total 12 screws. This completes fixing six shelf boards between both side boards, forming the main bookshelf structure.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 10 / 20

    Tip

    • After both sides are fixed, check level of each shelf with a level. If any shelf tilts, loosen screws, adjust, and re-fix.

    Watch out

    • Do not screw both sides simultaneously; fix one side completely before fixing the other to avoid distortion.
  11. 11

Check Overall Level and Diagonal Measurements

    ≈ 15 min

Place assembled bookshelf on the floor and check each shelf level with a level. Measure diagonal distances (top-left to bottom-right, top-right to bottom-left) with tape measure, ensuring difference within 5mm. If distorted, loosen clamps, adjust, and add screws to fix.

    Check level
    Level ✓
    LevelSTEP 11 / 20

    Tip

    • If diagonal difference exceeds 5mm, the structure is a parallelogram; correct before attaching back board.
    • Back board increases rigidity; fix distortion before attaching it.

    Watch out

    • Shelf sagging (center drooping) worsens with book weight. Shelf length of 600mm is acceptable; consider reinforcement if over 1000mm.
  12. 12

    Prepare to Attach Back Board

    ≈ 10 min

Place 4mm plywood back board (900×1800mm) against bookshelf back, align corners and verify diagonal matches bookshelf's diagonals. The back board helps correct any remaining distortion. Lightly tape back board to bookshelf with masking tape once positioned.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 12 / 20

    Tip

    • Back board is crucial for rigidity; slight misalignment reduces strength.
    • Use a stapler for fastening plywood back board; if using small nails, pre-drill pilot holes.

    Watch out

    • If back board is larger than bookshelf, trim protruding parts.
    • If smaller, keep even gaps about 5mm around edges.
  13. 13

    Staple Back Board in Place

    ≈ 20 min

Attach back board to side and shelf boards using a stapler (15mm staples) or small nails every 100-150mm around perimeter and at shelf positions. Start at corners and proceed along diagonals to minimize distortion.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 13 / 20

    Tip

    • Staplers costing 1500-2500 yen at home centers speed work compared to nails; worthwhile for bookshelf building.
    • Mark shelf positions on back board with pencil before stapling to avoid missing fastening at shelves.

    Watch out

    • Staples protruding inside can scratch books; 15mm staple length is appropriate for 19mm lumber.
    • Only fastening on four edges without stapling at shelf positions allows back board to bow and lift.
  14. 14

    Prepare to Attach L-Shaped Brackets

    ≈ 15 min

Plan to attach four 50mm L-shaped brackets at top rear of bookshelf: two on each side. One side fixed to bookshelf top edge; the other side to wall studs. Confirm wall stud locations with a stud finder beforehand.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 14 / 20

    Tip

    • Cheap stud finders from 100 yen shops are less accurate; home center models (1000-2000 yen) are recommended.
    • Wall studs are usually spaced 455mm on center; once one is found, approximate neighbor locations.

    Watch out

    • Screw fixation only on drywall is insufficient to prevent tipping; must fix into studs.
    • If bracket position does not align with studs, adjust bracket laterally so screws hit stud center.
  15. 15

    Attach L-Brackets to Bookshelf

    ≈ 10 min

Attach four L-shaped brackets to bookshelf upper side boards on outside face using 38mm coarse-thread screws through bracket holes. Fix brackets flush or recessed within 5mm, projecting perpendicularly for wall attachment.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 15 / 20

    Tip

    • Ensure bracket bends face wall and screw holes face bookshelf.
    • Maintain correct orientation.

    Watch out

    • Bracket installed crookedly creates gaps when fixing to wall; check level carefully.
  16. 16

Set Up Bookshelf and Secure to Wall

    ≈ 20 min

Carry the bookshelf to installation site (two people recommended), place tight against wall, and screw L-bracket wall-side holes into wall studs using 45-50mm coarse-thread screws (provided or separate). Secure all four points to complete tipping prevention.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 16 / 20

    Tip

    • 38mm screws are too short for wall fixing; use 45-50mm screws to reach studs.
    • Wall fixing is the most critical step; skipping risks injury or fatality in earthquakes.

    Watch out

    • Drywall anchors alone have insufficient strength; always screw into studs.
    • If gap between bookshelf and wall exceeds 5mm, insert shim before screwing; loose brackets reduce effectiveness.
  17. 17

    Clean Before Painting

    ≈ 10 min

Vacuum and wipe the entire bookshelf with a dry cloth to remove wood dust, oils, and fingerprints thoroughly. Clean surfaces significantly affect finish quality. Optionally, mask plywood back board due to its rapid absorbency.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 17 / 20

    Tip

    • Wipe before painting using sequence: dry wipe → damp wipe → dry wipe for perfect cleaning.

    Watch out

    • Remaining wood dust causes rough painted surfaces; check with lighting.
  18. 18

    First Coat Oil Stain Application

    ≈ 40 min

Using brush, apply oil stain (e.g., Watco Oil or Kinura) over entire bookshelf: outside of side boards, shelf board tops, shelf board undersides, then back board. After 10-15 minutes, wipe off excess with a dry cloth. First coat uses about 60-70% of total amount due to high absorption.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 18 / 20

    Tip

    • Apply oil stain, wait 10-15 minutes, then wipe off; skipping wiping leaves stickiness.
    • Brush width of 30-50mm is optimal for bookshelf; too large brushes miss detailed areas.

    Watch out

    • Not wiping off causes sticky surfaces lasting over a week.
    • Plywood back board absorbs stain quickly and unevenly; apply thinly and wipe carefully.
  19. 19

    Second Coat Oil Stain Application

    ≈ 25 min

After first coat dries for 24 hours, apply second coat in thinner layer using about 30-50% of first coat amount. Wipe off excess as before. Two coats deepen color and improve protection. Allow 24-48 hours to fully dry.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 19 / 20

    Tip

    • Second coat corrects unevenness from first coat; apply evenly and thinly.
    • Add a third coat if you prefer deeper color.

    Watch out

    • Do not forget to wipe off second coat; thick application causes uneven coloration.
    • Keep drying area indoors free of dust and insects.
  20. 20

Completion, Start of Use, and Inspection

    ≈ 15 min

After full drying of oil for 48 hours, place books and begin use. Arrange heavy books on lower two shelves, lighter books on upper shelves for balanced stability. Check screws and L-bracket fixings after one week from starting use, and re-tighten if needed.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 20 / 20

    Tip

    • Place heavy books (encyclopedias etc.) on lower two shelves; upper shelves with lighter paperback and hardcover books.
    • Reapply oil every 3-5 years to restore gloss and protection.

    Watch out

    • Do not place books immediately after finishing as oil may transfer to them; wait 48 hours or more.
    • Books absorb moisture; use dehumidifiers during rainy season to prevent bookshelf warping due to humidity.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
