Build steps

  1. 1

Final Check of Materials and Tools

    ≈ 15 min

Gather 2 side boards of SPF lumber 1x10 (19×350×900mm), 6 shelf boards (19×350×800mm), one 4mm plywood back board (800×900mm), 24 coarse-thread screws 38mm, 4 L-brackets 50mm. Tools include electric screwdriver, saw, measuring tape, carpenter's square, #120 and #240 sandpaper, level, two F-clamps, brush and paint tray, stapler or small nails.

    Measure
    W 800 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 20

    Tip

    • SPF lumber tends to warp. Visually check each board for warp when purchasing and choose those within 1mm warp.
    • L-brackets and screws are the lifesaving measures against overturning. Do not omit.

    Watch out

    • Inspect warp, cracks, and knots per board before purchase. Installing boards warped over 1mm causes distorted shelves.
    • 4mm plywood back board is thin and easily broken during handling. After cutting, store it upright immediately.
  2. 2

    Securing a Workspace

    ≈ 10 min

Secure a workspace where the 900mm tall bookshelf can be assembled. A ceiling height of over 2200mm and floor area about 1500×1200mm is ample. Lay a blue sheet and use two sawhorses for supporting long lumber.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 2 / 20

    Tip

    • Assembly is done lying on the floor; stand up the shelf only in the final step. This allows work in confined rooms.

    Watch out

    • Standing the assembled shelf alone is difficult; two people recommended for safety.
    • If ceiling height is under 2000mm, the bookshelf may hit the ceiling when standing it up. Confirm before starting.
  3. 3

Creating Cut List and Requesting Cuts

    ≈ 20 min

Submit the cut list to the home center for 2 side boards (900mm), 6 shelf boards (800mm), back board (800×900mm). If cutting yourself, support long lumber (900mm) with two sawhorses and perform push cuts. Aim for cutting errors within ±2mm.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 3 / 20

    Tip

    • Cutting cost is 30–50 yen per cut; full cutting requests cost about 1000 yen and reduce time from 30 minutes to immediate.
    • Since the 6 shelf boards have the same dimension, bundling them for a single cut yields highest accuracy.

    Watch out

    • 19mm thick SPF lumber easily warps even with straight cuts. Use a guide for straight cutting.
    • 4mm plywood is soft; if unsupported underneath during cutting, it warps and distorts.
  4. 4

    Sanding All Materials (#120→#240)

    ≈ 40 min

Sand all materials starting with #120 grit, then #240. Particularly sand the shelf support surfaces on side boards, top and bottom surfaces and edges of shelf boards thoroughly. Rounding the shelf edges improves usability. After sanding, vacuum completely to remove sawdust.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 4 / 20

    Tip

    • Make shelf board surfaces smooth so books slide in and out easily.
    • Edges (cut sections) tend to have raised fibers; carefully sand starting from #120 grit.

    Watch out

    • SPF lumber is soft; excessive sanding distorts dimensions. Use #120 for primary sanding and #240 only for finishing.
    • Rounding corners excessively looks clumsy. Keep edge radius about 2mm.
  5. 5

Marking Shelf Positions on Side Boards

    ≈ 15 min

Place two side boards side by side and mark shelf positions for 6 shelves with pencil. Shelf spacing can be 300mm each from bottom up (total 1800mm for 6 shelves) or designed with wider decorative top spacing. Align both side boards exactly and mark simultaneously.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 5 / 20

    Tip

    • Clamp two side boards together before marking lines to ensure shelf positions are identical on both sides.
    • Use heights of A4 (297mm), A5 (210mm), and bunko size (150mm) books as references for shelf spacing to fit storage.

    Watch out

    • If shelf positions differ left to right, shelf boards will be installed at an angle. Marking simultaneously with clamped boards is essential.
    • Forget shelf board thickness (19mm) when calculating gaps leads to narrower actual spacing.
  6. 6

    Preparing Pilot Holes

    ≈ 20 min

Drill 3mm diameter pilot holes at marked positions. Pilot holes are drilled from outside faces of side boards inward to shelf board edges, passing through the 19mm side board and into the shelf board 10mm deep, totaling 29mm. Use masking tape as depth marker.

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 6 / 20

    Tip

    • 3mm pilot hole diameter is approximately 70% of the 4.2mm shaft of 38mm coarse-thread screws, which prevents wood splitting.
    • Each shelf board has 2 pilot holes on each side board, totaling 24 holes (6 shelves × 4 screws). Check no holes are missed.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient pilot hole depth prevents screws from fully seating; drill slightly deeper than nominal depth for safety.
    • Prevent drill bit from passing entirely through the shelf board by using tape as a depth limiter.
  7. 7

Temporarily Fixing Shelf Boards on One Side

    ≈ 20 min

Lay one side board flat and stand 6 shelf boards upright at their marked positions. Temporarily fix each shelf board with F-clamps. Use a carpenter's square to confirm right angles between side board and shelf boards. Where square does not fit, visually check alignment.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 20

    Tip

    • Install shelves sequentially from bottom to top for better stability.
    • One clamp per shelf board is ideal. Having 6 clamps eases work; if fewer, proceed sequentially.

    Watch out

    • If right angles are incorrect when fixed, the entire assembly becomes a parallelogram. Always confirm with carpenter's square.
    • If shelf boards protrude beyond edges of side boards, the backboard cannot be installed later.
  8. 8

    Screwing One Side

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws via pilot holes from the outside of the side board into shelf board edges, two screws per position, totaling 12 screws for 6 shelves. Screw heads must be flush or sunk about 0.5mm below surface. Use medium torque then finish tightening by hand with a quarter turn.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 8 / 20

    Tip

    • Offset the two screws very slightly vertically to increase withdrawal strength.
    • If screw heads are visible and undesirable, holes can be optionally plugged with wooden dowel later.

    Watch out

    • Over-tightening screws can split 19mm thick SPF lumber edges. Use medium torque only.
    • If screws go in angled and protrude the opposite side, remove, fill with wood putty, and re-screw in different location.
  9. 9

Preparing Installation of Opposite Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Stand the assembly fixed on one side upright. Position the second side board so that shelf boards fit according to the pencil markings on the side board edges. Temporarily clamp all shelves in place. Confirm right angles with the entire assembly upright.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 9 / 20

    Tip

    • Two-person work is recommended. One to hold, one to clamp fixes accuracy.
    • The opposite side board markings were done initially and do not need redrawing.

    Watch out

    • Forcing this step alone may cause shelf boards to fall off. Use two people or rest assembly against wall during work.
  10. 10

    Screwing Opposite Side

    ≈ 15 min

From outside of the opposite side board, drive 38mm coarse-thread screws via pilot holes two per shelf location, total of 12 screws. This completes fixation of side boards and shelf boards, forming main bookshelf structure.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 10 / 20

    Tip

    • After both sides are fixed, check horizontality of all shelf boards with a level. If any shelf tilts, loosen screws and adjust as needed.

    Watch out

    • Installing screws on both sides simultaneously can cause distortion. Fully screw one side first, then the opposite.
  11. 11

    Overall Level and Diagonal Check

    ≈ 15 min

Place the assembled bookshelf on the floor. Check levelness of each shelf with a level. From front, measure diagonals (top left to bottom right and top right to bottom left) with a measuring tape, ensuring difference is within 5mm. If distortion exists, loosen clamps to adjust, then fix with additional screws.

    Check level
    Level ✓
    LevelSTEP 11 / 20

    Tip

    • Diagonal difference over 5mm indicates a parallelogram shape. Correct it before attaching the back board.
    • Back board enhances rigidity; fix distortion before back board attachment.

    Watch out

    • Shelf sagging (central droop) may worsen with books’ weight. Shelf length of 600mm is acceptable; over 1000mm requires reinforcement.
  12. 12

    Preparation for Back Board Attachment

    ≈ 10 min

Fit the 4mm plywood back board (800×900mm) to the bookshelf's back. Align four corners and confirm diagonals match the main body to achieve final correction of distortion. Lightly tape back board to main body for temporary fixation.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 12 / 20

    Tip

    • Back board is a crucial component to suppress distortion. Slight misalignment reduces rigidity.
    • 4mm plywood can be easily fixed with a stapler. Pre-drill pilot holes when using small nails.

    Watch out

    • If back board is larger than main body, trim protruding parts. If smaller, maintain even gaps of about 5mm around edges.
  13. 13

    Stapling Back Board

    ≈ 20 min

Staple the back board to side boards and shelf boards with 15mm staples from a stapler or small nails. Staple intervals are 100-150mm all around and at shelf board positions. Begin at corners and follow diagonals sequentially to reduce distortion.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 13 / 20

    Tip

    • Stapler costs about 1500-2500 yen and is faster than nails. Worth investing for bookshelf building.
    • Mark shelf positions on back board with pencil beforehand to avoid missing fastening at shelf boards.

    Watch out

    • Stapler staples protruding inside can damage books. 15mm staples are suitable for 19mm thickness.
    • Stapling only the four edges and not at shelf positions causes back board to lift if sagging occurs.
  14. 14

    Preparation for L-Bracket Installation

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare 4 L-brackets 50mm to attach two each on upper rear sides of bookshelf. One side attaches to top of bookshelf side boards; the opposite side attaches to wall. Locate wall studs with a stud sensor beforehand.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 14 / 20

    Tip

    • 100 yen shop stud sensors are less accurate; home center ones costing 1000-2000 yen are recommended.
    • Studs are usually spaced at 455mm intervals; finding one helps estimate positions of adjacent studs.

    Watch out

    • Fixing only to drywall without studs does not prevent overturning. Always mount into studs.
    • If L-bracket positions do not align with studs, adjust bracket laterally for screw placement into stud centers.
  15. 15

    Installing L-Brackets on Bookshelf Side

    ≈ 10 min

Fasten 4 L-brackets to the bookshelf’s upper side board exterior with 38mm coarse-thread screws in the provided holes. Fix brackets flush or within 5mm gap, oriented so bent side faces wall straight out.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 15 / 20

    Tip

    • Ensure L-brackets are installed with bracket bend facing wall and screw holes facing bookshelf side board.

    Watch out

    • If brackets are angled, gaps form between bracket and wall at fixing. Confirm level before fixing.
  16. 16

Setting Up Bookshelf and Wall Mounting

    ≈ 20 min

Carry the bookshelf upright to installation location (two people recommended). Place it flush against the wall. Using the L-brackets' holes on the wall side, drive 45-50mm coarse-thread screws into the wall studs. Fix all four positions securely to prevent overturning.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 16 / 20

    Tip

    • Wall screws must be longer than 38mm to reach studs; use 45-50mm screws.
    • Wall mounting is the most critical step. Neglecting it risks injury or death during earthquakes.

    Watch out

    • Drywall anchors alone lack strength. Always screw into studs.
    • If gap exceeds 5mm between shelf and wall, insert shims before fixing. Floating brackets reduce effectiveness.
  17. 17

    Pre-Painting Cleaning

    ≈ 10 min

Thoroughly clean the bookshelf with a vacuum and dry cloth to remove sawdust, oils, and fingerprints. Surface cleanliness greatly influences paint finish quality. Masking the plywood back board before painting is optional as it absorbs paint quickly.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 17 / 20

    Tip

    • Wipe in sequence: dry wipe → damp wipe → dry wipe to ensure complete cleaning.

    Watch out

    • Residual sawdust causes rough paint surfaces. Illuminate surface to check cleanliness.
  18. 18

Applying First Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 40 min

Brush oil stain (e.g. Watco Oil or Kinura) onto all surfaces in order: outside sides of side boards, shelf top surfaces, shelf undersides, then back board. After 10-15 minutes, wipe off excess with a dry cloth. Use around 60-70% of total amount for first coat.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 18 / 20

    Tip

    • Oil stain application procedure: apply → wait 10-15 minutes → wipe off excess to avoid tackiness.
    • 30-50mm wide brushes are optimal; too wide brushes do not reach detailed areas easily.

    Watch out

    • Failing to wipe excess results in stickiness lasting over a week.
    • Plywood back boards absorb faster and prone to blotches; apply thinly and wipe carefully.
  19. 19

    Second Oil Stain Coat

    ≈ 25 min

After drying 24 hours from the first coat, apply a second coat with 1/3 to 1/2 amount of the first coat. Again, wipe off after 10-15 minutes. Two coats deepen color and enhance protection. Complete drying takes 24-48 hours.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 19 / 20

    Tip

    • Second coat fixes any color unevenness from first coat. Apply thinly and evenly.
    • Add a third coat if deeper color is desired.

    Watch out

    • Do not skip wiping after second coat or thick patches cause blotching.
    • Keep painted furniture indoors during drying to prevent dust and insects attaching.
  20. 20

    Completion, First Use and Inspection

    ≈ 15 min

After oil fully dries (48 hours), arrange books and begin use. Place heavy books on lower shelves and lighter ones on upper shelves for better balance and stability. After one week of use, recheck screws and L-bracket fixings and tighten if needed.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 20 / 20

    Tip

    • Place heavy books like encyclopedias concentrated on the bottom two shelves; lighter paperbacks higher up.
    • Reapply oil every 3-5 years to restore gloss and protection.

    Watch out

    • Placing books before full drying may transfer oil marks to books; wait at least 48 hours.
    • Books absorb moisture; during rainy season place dehumidifiers. Bookshelf may warp from humidity.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
