Build steps

  1. 1

Confirm Installation Location and Property Boundary

    ≈ 30 min

Measure the planned installation line for the Asian Style Bamboo Fence (1800×60×1500mm). Clearly identify the property boundary and check distances to neighboring houses, existing structures, and locations of underground utilities (pipes, electric wires).

    Measure
    W 1800 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 9

    Tip

    • Keep at least 50mm inside the property boundary for safety, preventing boundary disputes.
    • Confirm locations of underground water and gas pipes with local authorities beforehand to prevent accidents during post hole digging.
    • It is important to greet neighbors beforehand to explain noise and passage impacts during construction.

    Watch out

    • Misunderstanding property boundaries can cause disputes with neighbors; verify with survey maps before construction.
    • Damaging underground utilities can lead to compensation liabilities; always confirm locations beforehand.
  2. 2

Cut Materials and Prepare Stainless Steel Screws

    ≈ 45 min

Prepare three posts (89×89×2100mm) cut from 4x4 lumber, three rails (38×89×1500mm) cut from 2x4 lumber, seventeen boards (19×89×1500mm) cut from SPF 1x4 lumber. Also prepare 102 stainless steel coarse thread screws 75mm, three bags of quick-curing mortar, and two cans of outdoor wood preservative (e.g., Xyladecor).

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 2 / 9

    Tip

    • Post length from 4x4 lumber is 2400mm = 1800mm above ground + 600mm buried. Burial depth is minimal dimension to withstand wind pressure.
    • Stainless steel screws are essential for outdoor use. Iron screws will rust and weaken within one year.
    • Choose quick-curing mortar. It hardens the same day, allowing work to proceed.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient burial depth of posts risks collapse in strong wind.
    • Using iron screws causes rust stains on boards and damages the paint film.
  3. 3

Dig Post Holes and Lay Gravel

    ≈ 90 min

Dig three holes for posts with a diameter of 200mm and a depth of 600mm. Space posts 900mm apart (center + both ends of 1800mm fence width). Lay 100mm thick gravel at hole bottoms for drainage.

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 3 / 9

    Tip

    • Using a post hole digger can reduce work time to one third.
    • Ideal hole diameter is twice the post thickness (200mm) to leave mortar thickness holding the post.
    • Gravel layer keeps post bottoms from soaking in water.

    Watch out

    • Hole depth less than 600mm risks collapse in strong wind.
    • Poor drainage holes cause posts to rot from water. Always create drainage layers with gravel.
  4. 4

Set Posts Upright and Fix with Mortar

    ≈ 120 min

Set posts vertically in holes and use a level to confirm verticality while temporarily securing them with wooden stakes and wire. Mix quick-curing mortar and pour into holes to fix posts, mound mortar slightly above ground to prevent water pooling. Let cure undisturbed for 24 hours.

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 4 / 9

    Tip

    • Mix mortar with less water (firm mix); too soft reduces strength after curing.
    • Check post verticality with level in both front-back and side-side directions.
    • Finish mortar surface 10mm above ground to prevent water ingress.

    Watch out

    • Strong winds before mortar cures can tilt posts; choose a calm day.
    • Misaligned verticality affects horizontal placement of rails.
  5. 5

    Attach Rails

    ≈ 60 min

After mortar cures, attach three rails (38×89×1500mm) on the outside (garden side) of the three posts at approximately 200mm, 900mm, and 1700mm above ground. Drill ø5mm pilot holes from the post side and drive two stainless steel coarse thread screws 75mm at each joint.

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 5 / 9

    Tip

    • Attach rails on the garden side of posts, so rails are hidden by boards when viewed from the road side.
    • Use a level to confirm rails are horizontal before fastening.
    • Drive screws from post side; boards will hide rails for aesthetics.

    Watch out

    • Post misalignment affects rail placement. Measure actual distances before cutting rails.
    • Driving screws without pilot holes can split 4x4 posts.
  6. 6

    Attach Boards (1x4 Lumber)

    ≈ 90 min

Attach twenty SPF 1x4 boards vertically to the rails. Leave a 5mm gap (width of one finger) between boards to relieve wind pressure and allow ventilation. Fix each board with one screw on upper, middle, and lower rails (3 screws total).

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 6 / 9

    Tip

    • Do not fit boards tightly; gaps help relieve wind pressure, improve ventilation, and provide visual rhythm.
    • Use chopsticks or 5mm spacers for consistent gaps.
    • Keep board bottom 50mm above ground to prevent water contact.

    Watch out

    • Tightly fitting boards increase risk of collapse from wind pressure.
    • Boards contacting the ground absorb water and rot; always keep elevated.
  7. 7

    Sanding and Surface Preparation

    ≈ 60 min

Sand the entire assembled fence with #120 and then #240 sandpapers, focusing on board surfaces, ends, and corners. Remove all dust completely before coating to enhance outdoor coating adhesion.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 7 / 9

    Tip

    • Board ends are water entry points; sand thoroughly to promote coating absorption.
    • An orbital sander is convenient for large areas; consider rental services.
    • Wear mask and safety glasses to protect from dust.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient sanding reduces coating adhesion, causing early peeling outdoors.
    • Coating over dust creates rough surface.
  8. 8

Apply First Coat of Outdoor Wood Preservative

    ≈ 90 min

Apply an outdoor wood preservative such as Xyladecor over all surfaces with a brush: both sides of boards, rails, and posts. Apply extra preservative to board ends (cut surfaces) for deep penetration. Let dry naturally for 24 hours.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 8 / 9

    Tip

    • Penetration into board ends is key to preservative effectiveness; focus here.
    • For large surfaces, rollers can be used; finish edges with a brush.
    • Avoid applying in direct sunlight to prevent surface drying while interior remains damp; choose shade or cloudy weather.

    Watch out

    • Rain before drying causes coating to run.
    • Thick paste-like coats cause uneven application; apply thin, uniform layers.
  9. 9

Apply Second Coat and Final Inspection

    ≈ 90 min

After the first coat fully dries, apply a second, slightly thinner coat. After more than 24 hours drying, inspect the entire fence for protruding screw heads, coating unevenness, and post stability.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 9 / 9

    Tip

    • Two coats significantly improve outdoor durability; do not skip.
    • Lightly sand with #240 and recoat annually to extend lifespan beyond 10 years.
    • Check post bases around ground twice a year as water tends to accumulate there.

    Watch out

    • Skipping the second coat leads to peeling and wood decay within 2–3 years.
    • Neglecting annual recoating results in replacement needed within 10 years.

Warnings

  • ⚠️For outdoor use, wood preservative coating is mandatory (recoat once a year recommended).
  • ⚠️Use stainless steel screws (iron screws will rust).
  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
