Materials
Build steps
- 1
Measurement and installation location confirmation
≈ 15 minMeasure the installation location for the Window Flower Box (800×200×200mm). Check the window frame size, water splash paths during watering, and sunlight direction (southeast-facing ideal).
MeasureW 800 mmMeasureSTEP 1 / 10Tip
- Make the box width 50mm smaller than the window frame for easier installation.
- Structure it to keep 20-30mm distance from the wall to prevent water stains on the wall or window from watering drainage.
- If attaching to balcony railing, measure the railing width beforehand.
Watch out
- Measure the interior dimensions of the window frame, not the exterior. Overlooking frame thickness can prevent fitting.
- Plants will not grow well if installed on a north-facing location with poor sunlight. Confirm sunlight duration at installation spot.
- 2
Cutting and preparation of materials
≈ 20 minCut SPF 1x6 lumber (12×140mm) to: front and back boards (12×140×800mm) × 2, side boards (12×140×200mm) × 2, bottom boards (12×140×776mm) × 2. Prepare 38mm coarse-thread screws × 30 pieces. Also prepare one can of water-based outdoor wood preservative.
CutUse the in-store cut serviceCutSTEP 2 / 10Tip
- SPF 1x6 boards may warp significantly as they are thin. Check straightness by viewing from the end at purchase.
- Bottom boards are 776mm long × 2 pieces, matching inner dimension 776mm of front/back boards 800mm.
- Using home center cutting service ensures accuracy. Cost per cut is around 30-50 yen.
Watch out
- Thin boards easily split if screws are driven without pilot holes.
- If stainless steel screws are not used, iron screws will rust within one year outdoors.
- 3
Sanding
≈ 25 minSand all parts in order with #120, then #240 grit sandpaper. Since plants will be planted, carefully bevel inside corners to avoid damaging roots. Pay special attention to sanding wood ends (cross-sections) as they absorb water easily.
Sand#120SandSTEP 3 / 10Tip
- Wood ends expose fibers and are entry points for water. Proper sealing with preservative here is key to longevity.
- Sand both exterior and interior well to avoid roots catching.
- Beveling edges protects plants from injury.
Watch out
- Do sanding outdoors to avoid bringing dust inside.
- Painting over leftover sanding dust results in rough finish.
- 4
Assembling front/back boards and side boards
≈ 30 minAttach side boards inside both ends of front/back boards. Apply a thin layer of wood glue on edges, then drill φ3mm pilot holes from front/back boards and drive two 38mm coarse-thread screws at each joint point (total 8 screws for 4 points). Use a carpenter's square to confirm right angles during assembly.
Build the frameTighten joints firmlyAssembleSTEP 4 / 10Tip
- 1x6 lumber is 12mm thick and thin. 38mm screws appropriately cover two boards plus glue (12+12+glue).
- Always drill pilot holes first. 12mm thick boards split easily.
- Wipe off excess glue immediately with damp cloth.
Watch out
- Driving 38mm screws without pilot holes will split the boards. Pilot holes are essential for 12mm thickness.
- Excessive glue inside will prevent paint adhesion.
- 5
Attaching bottom boards and processing drainage holes
≈ 25 minPlace two bottom boards (140×776mm) inside the box side by side, leaving a 5mm gap between them for better drainage. Drill 4-6 drainage holes of 8mm diameter in the center area. Fix bottom boards to side and front/back boards by pilot holes and driving two 38mm coarse-thread screws at each fixing point.
Drill a hole下穴 φ3.5mmDrillSTEP 5 / 10Tip
- Drainage holes are essential. Without them, soil becomes waterlogged causing root rot.
- Leaving a 5mm gap between bottom boards improves drainage; use chopsticks to keep uniform spacing.
- Laying lightweight lava rock on bottom boards helps prevent drainage hole clogging.
Watch out
- Forgetting drainage holes will kill plants. Always drill holes.
- If bottom boards are fixed without gaps, moisture accumulates causing wood rot.
- 6
Checking right angles and surface preparation for painting
≈ 15 minMeasure both diagonal lengths of the assembled box with a measuring tape, confirming difference is within 2mm. If misaligned, correct with clamps. Then sand the entire surface lightly with #240 grit and remove dust.
InspectNo wobble ✓InspectSTEP 6 / 10Tip
- Large diagonal difference may cause pots not to fit; aim for within 2mm.
- Glue spots repel paint; remove by sanding.
- Treat interior with equal care.
Watch out
- Neglecting distortion will prevent fitting in window frame.
- Painting over dust results in rough texture.
- 7
Applying first coat of outdoor wood preservative
≈ 30 minApply water-based outdoor wood preservative (e.g. Xyladecor, Osmo Color) evenly on all surfaces (front, back, interior, and wood ends) with a brush. Soak wood ends particularly well. Let dry naturally for 2-3 hours.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 7 / 10Tip
- Penetration of preservative into wood ends is crucial for protection.
- Water-based preservatives allow brush cleaning with water, beginner-friendly.
- Applying preservative inside protects wood from moisture of planting soil.
Watch out
- Over-thick application causes uneven drying and peeling later; two thin coats recommended.
- Do not paint before rain; wet paint will run off. Check weather forecast before application.
- 8
Applying second coat
≈ 30 minAfter first coat is dry, lightly sand surface with #400 grit, then apply second coat more thinly than first. Since used outdoors, forming a solid protective film is important. Let dry fully for at least 24 hours before use.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 8 / 10Tip
- Two coats greatly increase protection; mandatory for outdoor use.
- Light sanding with #400 is only to smooth fuzz raised after first coat.
- Keep drying area free of dust.
Watch out
- Rain before full drying causes coating to run off. Mandatory 24-hour drying.
- Excessive sanding may remove first coat film.
- 9
Attaching to window frame
≈ 30 minAttach the box to the window frame using L-brackets or dedicated brackets. Ensure brackets are firmly fixed into the wall structural base (wood framing or studs). After installation, gently shake the box to check for stability and no wobble.
Fix to the wallAnchor to studsInstallSTEP 9 / 10Tip
- Empty box is light but soil plus water plus plants weigh over 10kg; use strong brackets.
- Locate studs with a stud sensor before screwing brackets.
- Hanging type brackets allow easy removal for watering and cleaning.
Watch out
- Exceeding bracket load capacity risks fall accidents. Calculate box plus full weight.
- Drywall alone is insufficient for anchoring; always fix to structural base.
- 10
Planting and final check
≈ 25 minLine the inside with root barrier sheet or nonwoven fabric (prevents direct contact between soil and wood). Spread 2cm lightweight lava rock above, then add soil and plants. Water thoroughly and confirm water drains from drainage holes. Monitor daily for several days after installation.
Done!Done — nice work!DoneSTEP 10 / 10Tip
- Root barrier sheet extends wood life by 3-5 years; available at 100-yen shops.
- Lava rock prevents drainage holes from clogging.
- First watering should be generous, confirming drainage function.
Watch out
- Without root barrier sheet, wood will rot from moisture due to direct soil contact.
- Water dripping underneath can stain surfaces; prepare drainage catch under box.
Warnings
- ⚠️Wood preservative treatment is essential for outdoor use (reapplication once a year recommended).
- ⚠️Use stainless steel screws (iron screws will rust).
- ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
