Build steps

  1. 1

Measuring and verifying the installation location

    ≈ 15 min

Measure the installation location for the Antique Wooden Flower Box (500×300×250mm). Check the window frame size, splash path from watering, and sunlight (ideally southeast-facing).

    Measure
    W 500 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 10

    Tip

    • Make the box width 50mm smaller than the window frame for easier installation.
    • Leave 20-30mm gap from the wall so water drainage does not dirty the wall or window.
    • If attaching to balcony railing, measure railing width first.

    Watch out

    • Measure inside dimensions of the window frame, not outside. Ignoring frame thickness causes fitting problems.
    • Plants won't thrive facing north with poor sunlight. Check sunlight duration at installation site.
  2. 2

    Cutting and preparing materials

    ≈ 20 min

Cut SPF 1×6 lumber (12×140mm) into front and back boards (12×140×500mm) ×3, side boards (12×140×300mm) ×3, and bottom boards (12×140×476mm) ×3. Prepare 30 coarse-thread screws 38mm. Also prepare one can of water-based wood preservative for outdoor use.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 2 / 10

    Tip

    • SPF 1×6 lumber can be warped; check straightness by viewing the end during purchase.
    • Bottom boards length is 776mm ×3, matching internal length of front/back boards (800mm outside).
    • Cutting at home center is accurate; cost is 30-50 yen per cut.

    Watch out

    • Without pilot holes, thin boards crack easily when screwing.
    • Non-stainless screws rust outdoors within a year.
  3. 3

    Sanding

    ≈ 25 min

Sand all parts in order #120 then #240 grit. Carefully bevel inner corners so plant roots are not damaged. Edges (wood ends) absorb water easily, so sand these thoroughly.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 3 / 10

    Tip

    • Edges expose fibers inviting water ingress; sealing with preservative is key for durability.
    • Sand both exterior and interior surfaces to avoid roots snagging.
    • Bevel corners to protect plants.

    Watch out

    • Do sanding outdoors to prevent dust indoors.
    • Painting over leftover dust causes rough finish.
  4. 4

Assembling front, back, and side boards

    ≈ 30 min

Attach side boards to inner ends of front and back boards. Apply a thin layer of wood glue to wood ends. Drill φ3mm pilot holes into front and back boards and drive two 38mm coarse-thread screws at each joint (4 locations ×2 screws = 8 screws total). Use a carpenter's square to verify right angles at corners.

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 4 / 10

    Tip

    • SPF 1×6 is only 12mm thick; 38mm screws are appropriate length accounting for two boards plus glue.
    • Pilot holes are essential; 12mm boards split easily without them.
    • Wipe excess glue immediately with a damp cloth.

    Watch out

    • No pilot holes cause splitting when driving 38mm screws into 12mm boards.
    • Excess glue inside box blocks paint adhesion.
  5. 5

Attaching bottom boards and processing drainage holes

    ≈ 25 min

Place two bottom boards (140×776mm) inside the box with a 5mm gap between them to improve drainage. Drill 4-6 drainage holes 8mm diameter in centers of bottom boards. Drill pilot holes then secure with two 38mm screws each into side and front/back boards.

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 5 / 10

    Tip

    • Drainage holes are mandatory; without them soil gets waterlogged causing root rot.
    • Leaving 5mm slit between bottom boards improves drainage; insert chopsticks and clamp to keep spacing.
    • Place pumice on bottom boards to prevent drainage holes clogging.

    Watch out

    • Omitting drainage holes kills plants.
    • Closing bottom boards tightly traps moisture causing wood decay.
  6. 6

Right angle check and surface preparation for painting

    ≈ 15 min

Measure both diagonal lengths of assembled box with tape; ensure difference is within 2mm. If misaligned, adjust with clamps. Lightly sand entire box with #240 grit to remove dust and glue residues.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 6 / 10

    Tip

    • Large diagonal difference may prevent fitting plant pots. Aim for within 2mm.
    • Sanded glue spots ensure paint adheres.
    • Treat interior similarly for protection.

    Watch out

    • Ignoring distortion prevents fitting in window frames.
    • Painting over dust causes rough texture.
  7. 7

Applying the first coat of outdoor wood preservative

    ≈ 30 min

Use a brush to apply water-based outdoor wood preservative (e.g. Xyladecor, Osmo Color) thoroughly to all surfaces including front, back, sides, inside, and especially wood ends. Let dry naturally for 2-3 hours.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 7 / 10

    Tip

    • Preservative penetration into wood ends is crucial.
    • Water-based preservatives wash brushes easily and are beginner-friendly.
    • Coating interior protects wood from moisture in planting soil.

    Watch out

    • Applying thick coats causes uneven drying and peeling later.
    • Do not paint if rain is expected before drying; wet paint runs off.
  8. 8

    Applying the second coat

    ≈ 30 min

After the first coat dries, lightly sand with #400 grit, then apply a thinner second coat. Building a strong paint film is essential for outdoor use. Let dry for at least 24 hours until fully cured.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 8 / 10

    Tip

    • Two coats greatly improve protection; essential for outdoor use.
    • Light sanding lightly smooths surface; don’t overdo.
    • Keep drying area dust-free.

    Watch out

    • Exposure to rain before full cure causes paint to run.
    • Excessive sanding removes first coat layer.
  9. 9

    Attaching to the window frame

    ≈ 30 min

Fix the box to the window frame using L-shaped brackets or specialized mounts. Ensure brackets are securely attached to structural wood framing. After installation, gently shake box to confirm no wobble.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    InstallSTEP 9 / 10

    Tip

    • Empty box is light but soil plus water plus plants weigh over 10kg; use strong brackets.
    • Locate studs with a stud sensor before screwing.
    • Removable hanging options exist for ease of watering and cleaning.

    Watch out

    • Exceeding bracket load capacity risks falling accidents. Calculate total weight including wet soil.
    • Drywall alone cannot support weight; fasten into studs.
  10. 10

    Planting and final checks

    ≈ 25 min

Line interior with root barrier sheet or nonwoven fabric to avoid direct soil-wood contact. Spread 2cm of pumice, then add soil and plants. Water thoroughly and confirm drainage from holes. Monitor condition daily for several days.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 10 / 10

    Tip

    • Root barrier sheets extend wood life by 3-5 years; available even at 100-yen stores.
    • Pumice prevents drainage holes clogging.
    • First watering is thorough to test drainage.

    Watch out

    • Soil directly contacting wood causes decay from moisture.
    • Water dripping below requires drip tray to protect walls.

Warnings

  • ⚠️When using outdoors, applying wood preservative is essential (reapplication recommended annually).
  • ⚠️Use stainless steel screws (iron screws will rust).
  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before screwing to prevent wood splitting.
