Measuring and confirming installation location
≈ 15 minMeasure the installation location of the Mini Herb Garden Box (600×200×200mm). Check the window frame size, water splash path during watering, and sun exposure (southeast-facing is ideal).
MeasureW 600 mmMeasureSTEP 1 / 10Tip
- Make the box width 50mm smaller than the window frame for easier installation
- Design to keep 20-30mm distance from the wall so water drainage after watering doesn't stain the wall or window
- If attaching to balcony railing, measure the railing width first
Watch out
- Measure the inner dimensions of the window frame, not the outer. Overlooking frame thickness may cause it not to fit
- Plants won't grow if facing north with poor sunlight. Check the sunlight duration of the installation location
- 2
Cutting and preparing materials
≈ 20 minCut SPF lumber 1x6 (12×140mm) into front and back boards (12×140×600mm)×2, side boards (12×140×200mm)×2, and bottom boards (12×140×576mm)×2. Prepare 30 pieces of 38mm coarse-thread screws. Also prepare one can of water-based outdoor wood preservative.
CutUse the in-store cut serviceCutSTEP 2 / 10Tip
- SPF 1x6 lumber is thin and may be warped; check straightness from the ends before purchase
- Bottom boards are 776mm length×2 pieces, matching the inner dimension 776mm of 800mm front and back boards
- Cutting at home center is accurate; each cut costs 30-50 yen
Watch out
- Without pilot holes, screws easily split thin boards
- If non-stainless screws are used, they will rust within a year outdoors
- 3
Sanding
≈ 25 minSand all materials in order from #120 to #240 grit. Since plants will be planted, carefully round inside corners to avoid damaging roots. Pay special attention to sanding wood ends (cross sections) as they absorb water easily.
Sand#120SandSTEP 3 / 10Tip
- Wood ends have exposed grain and are entry points for water; sealing them well with preservative is key for longevity
- Sand interior surfaces thoroughly as well so roots do not catch
- Chamfering corners is important to protect plants from injury
Watch out
- Do sanding outdoors to avoid dust entering indoors
- Apply paint after removing all sanding dust; residual dust causes rough finish
- 4
Assembling front, back, and side boards
≈ 30 minAttach side boards inside both ends of the front and back boards. Apply a thin layer of wood glue on wood end surfaces, then drill φ3mm pilot holes through the front/back boards and drive two 38mm coarse-thread screws per joint. Total 8 screws (4 joints×2 screws). Confirm right angle at each corner with a carpenter’s square during assembly.
Build the frameTighten joints firmlyAssembleSTEP 4 / 10Tip
- Thickness of 1x6 lumber is 12mm thin; 38mm screw length is appropriate to join bottom boards plus included glue layers (12+12+glue)
- Always drill pilot holes first; 12mm boards split easily
- Wipe off excess glue immediately with a damp cloth
Watch out
- Driving 38mm screws without pilot holes splits the 12mm thick boards
- Excess glue inside may prevent paint adhesion
- 5
Attaching bottom boards and processing drainage holes
≈ 25 minPlace two bottom boards (140×776mm) side by side inside the main frame. Leave a 5mm gap between them for better drainage. Drill four to six 8mm diameter drainage holes in the center area. Drill pilot holes and secure each bottom board to side and front/back boards with two 38mm coarse-thread screws per location.
Drill a hole下穴 φ3.5mmDrillSTEP 5 / 10Tip
- Drainage holes are essential; without them soil becomes waterlogged causing root rot
- A 5mm slit between bottom boards improves drainage; use chopsticks as spacers for uniform gaps
- Apply pumice stone on bottom boards to prevent drainage holes clogging
Watch out
- Forgetting drainage holes causes plants to die
- Sealing bottom boards flush without gaps traps moisture and causes wood rot
- 6
Checking right angles and preparing for painting
≈ 15 minMeasure the lengths of the two diagonals of the assembled box using a measuring tape; ensure the difference is within 2mm. If misaligned, correct using clamps. Then lightly sand entire box with #240 grit and remove dust.
InspectNo wobble ✓InspectSTEP 6 / 10Tip
- Diagonal difference over 2mm may prevent pots from fitting
- Remove glue residues that repel paint by sanding
- Treat interior surfaces with equal care
Watch out
- Leaving warping causes the box not to fit the window frame
- Painting over dust causes rough surface finish
- 7
First coat of outdoor wood preservative
≈ 30 minApply water-based outdoor wood preservative (such as Xyladecor, Osmo Color) with a brush to all surfaces including front, back, sides, and wood ends. Saturate wood ends especially well. Let dry naturally for 2-3 hours.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 7 / 10Tip
- Preservative penetration into wood ends is key for protection
- Water-based paint is easy for beginners; brushes wash with water
- Apply inside as well to protect wood from soil moisture
Watch out
- Applying too thick causes uneven drying and later peeling; thin coats applied twice is essential
- If it rains before drying completes, coating will run; check weather forecast before painting
- 8
Second coat of paint
≈ 30 minOnce the first coat dries, lightly rub the surface with #400 sandpaper, then apply a thinner second coat. Form a solid paint film for outdoor durability. Allow 24 hours or more to fully cure.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 8 / 10Tip
- Two coats significantly improve protection, essential for outdoor use
- Light rubbing with #400 removes fuzz, do gently
- Place in a low-dust area during drying
Watch out
- Exposure to rain before drying damages film; strictly observe 24-hour drying time
- Strong rubbing may peel off the first coat
- 9
Attaching to the window frame
≈ 30 minFix the box to the window frame with L-brackets or dedicated brackets. Secure brackets firmly into the wall studs (wood framing or posts). After attaching, gently shake the box to ensure no looseness.
Fix to the wallAnchor to studsInstallSTEP 9 / 10Tip
- Empty box is light, but soil, water, and plants weigh over 10kg; use strong brackets
- Locate studs using a stud sensor before screwing
- Removable hanging brackets are available; convenient for watering and cleaning
Watch out
- Exceeding load capacity risks dropping accidents; calculate combined weight when full
- Securing only into drywall is not safe; always anchor into studs
- 10
Planting and final inspection
≈ 25 minLine the inside with root barrier sheet or nonwoven fabric to prevent direct soil-wood contact. Spread 2cm of pumice stone, then add soil and plants. Water thoroughly and confirm drainage through holes. Monitor condition daily for several days after installation.
Done!Done — nice work!DoneSTEP 10 / 10Tip
- Root barrier extends wood life by 3-5 years; available at 100 yen stores
- Pumice stone prevents drainage holes clogging
- First watering should be ample to confirm proper drainage
Watch out
- Without root barrier, wood deteriorates from moisture
- Water dripping below can stain; place drainage tray to protect walls
Warnings
- ⚠️Wood preservative coating is mandatory for outdoor use (reapply annually recommended)
- ⚠️Use stainless steel screws (iron screws will rust)
- ⚠️Drill pilot holes before screwing to prevent wood splitting
