Build steps

  1. 1

    Measuring and Confirming Installation Location

    ≈ 15 min

Measure the installation location for the fence-mounted flower box (600×180×180mm). Check the window frame size, water splash path when watering, and sunlight exposure (southeast-facing is ideal).

    Measure
    W 600 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 10

    Tip

    • Make the box width 50mm smaller than the window frame for easier installation.
    • Construct the box so it is 20-30mm away from the wall to avoid dirt from water draining onto the wall or window.
    • If installing on balcony railings, measure the railing width beforehand.

    Watch out

    • Measure the inner dimensions of the window frame, not the outer dimensions; overlooking the frame thickness will result in improper fit.
    • Plants won't grow well if facing north with poor sunlight; confirm the sunlight exposure duration at the installation location.
  2. 2

    Cutting and Preparing Materials

    ≈ 20 min

Cut SPF lumber 1x6 (12×140mm) into front and back boards (12×140×600mm) ×2, side boards (12×140×180mm) ×2, and bottom boards (12×140×576mm) ×2. Prepare thirty 38mm coarse-thread screws. Also prepare one can of water-based wood preservative for outdoor use.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 2 / 10

    Tip

    • Since 1x6 boards are thin, some pieces may be warped; check for straightness by looking along the edge when purchasing.
    • Bottom boards are 776mm long ×2; this length matches the inside dimension of front and back boards at 800 with thickness considered (800 minus thickness).
    • Having cuts made at a home improvement center ensures accuracy; each cut costs 30-50 yen.

    Watch out

    • Without pilot holes, screws easily split thin boards.
    • If stainless steel screws are not used, iron screws will rust within a year in outdoor environments.
  3. 3

    Sanding

    ≈ 25 min

Sand all materials in order using #120 then #240 grit sandpaper. Particularly chamfer the inside corners carefully to avoid damaging plant roots. Sand end grain (cross-sections) heavily as it absorbs water easily.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 3 / 10

    Tip

    • End grain exposes fibers and is a path for water intrusion; sealing with paint here is key to durability.
    • Sand thoroughly on both outside and inside so plant roots don’t get caught.
    • Chamfering corners protects plants from injuries.

    Watch out

    • Do not bring sanding dust indoors; perform sanding outdoors as weather permits.
    • Painting over residual sanding dust causes rough texture on the finish.
  4. 4

Assembling Front and Back Boards with Side Boards

    ≈ 30 min

Align side boards inside both ends of front and back boards and apply a thin layer of wood glue on the end grain surfaces. Drill φ3mm pilot holes from the front and back boards and secure with two 38mm coarse-thread screws per joint, totaling eight screws for four joints. Use the carpenter's square to verify right angles at all corners during assembly.

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 4 / 10

    Tip

    • SPF 1x6 lumber is 12mm thick and thin; 38mm screws provide ideal length accounting for two bottom boards plus glue (12+12 plus glue).
    • Always drill pilot holes first as 12mm-thick boards split easily.
    • Wipe excess glue immediately with a damp cloth.

    Watch out

    • Driving 38mm screws without pilot holes splits the 12mm-thick board.
    • Excess glue squeezed out inside prevents paint from adhering properly.
  5. 5

Attaching Bottom Boards and Creating Drainage Holes

    ≈ 25 min

Place two bottom boards (140×776mm) side by side inside the box body, leaving a 5mm gap between them to improve drainage. Drill 4-6 drainage holes of 8mm diameter in the center of each bottom board to allow excess water to escape. Drill pilot holes and attach the bottom boards to the side and front/back boards using two 38mm coarse-thread screws in each location.

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 5 / 10

    Tip

    • Drainage holes are essential; without holes soil floods and roots rot.
    • A 5mm slit between bottom boards further improves drainage; use chopsticks to maintain even spacing while fastening.
    • Laying lightweight expanded clay (LECA) above the bottom boards prevents clogging of drainage holes.

    Watch out

    • Omitting drainage holes causes plant death due to waterlogging.
    • If bottom boards are tightly abutted with no gap, moisture accumulates causing wood rot.
  6. 6

Checking Right Angles and Preparing Painting Surface

    ≈ 15 min

Measure the two diagonals of the assembled box with a measuring tape and ensure the difference is within 2mm. If misaligned, correct with clamps. Lightly sand the entire box with #240 grit sandpaper to remove dust and any glue residue.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 6 / 10

    Tip

    • Diagonal difference beyond 2mm risks a poor fit for plant pots; keep within 2mm.
    • Glue spots repel paint; sanding removes these areas.
    • Also treat inside surfaces carefully.

    Watch out

    • Ignoring frame distortion leads to box not fitting window frame.
    • Painting over dust results in rough finish.
  7. 7

Applying the First Coat of Outdoor Wood Preservative

    ≈ 30 min

Using a brush, apply water-based outdoor wood preservative (such as Xyladecor or Osmo Color) evenly on all surfaces including front, back, sides, and end grain. Apply extra preservative on end grain to soak in deeply. Allow 2-3 hours for natural drying.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 7 / 10

    Tip

    • Preservative penetration into end grain is key to protection.
    • Water-based preservatives can be cleaned from brushes with water, making them beginner-friendly.
    • Applying to inside surfaces protects wood from moisture in soil.

    Watch out

    • Applying too thickly causes uneven drying and peeling later; apply thin coats twice.
    • Do not coat when rain is expected; wet surfaces cause preservative to run off. Check weather forecast.
  8. 8

    Second Coat of Paint

    ≈ 30 min

Once the first coat is dry, gently scuff the surface with #400 sandpaper then apply the second coat thinner than the first. For outdoor use, forming a solid paint film is important. Allow at least 24 hours drying for complete curing.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 8 / 10

    Tip

    • Two coats greatly improve protection; mandatory for outdoor applications.
    • #400 sanding is light enough just to smooth fuzz.
    • Place in a low-dust environment during drying.

    Watch out

    • Rainfall before drying causes paint to run. A minimum 24-hour drying is required.
    • Do not sand too aggressively or the first coat film may peel off.
  9. 9

    Attaching to Window Frame

    ≈ 30 min

Secure the box with L-brackets or specialized brackets to the window frame. Fix brackets firmly to studs or wood framing underneath the wall surface. After installation, gently shake the box to verify there is no looseness.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    InstallSTEP 9 / 10

    Tip

    • Empty box is light but soil plus water and plants weigh over 10kg; use strong brackets.
    • Locate wall studs with a stud finder before screwing.
    • Removable hanging types are available for easier watering and cleaning.

    Watch out

    • Exceeding bracket load risks falling accidents; consider full weight when selecting hardware.
    • Do not fix only into drywall; always secure to framing beneath.
  10. 10

    Planting and Final Check

    ≈ 25 min

Line the inside with root barrier sheet or nonwoven fabric to prevent direct soil-wood contact. Place 2cm of lightweight expanded clay, then add soil and plants. Water thoroughly and confirm drainage through holes. Observe daily for a few days after installation.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 10 / 10

    Tip

    • Root barrier sheet extends wood lifespan by 3-5 years; available inexpensively.
    • Expanded clay prevents drainage holes from clogging.
    • Initial thorough watering also checks drainage functionality.

    Watch out

    • Without root barrier sheet, wood rots due to moisture from soil.
    • Water dripping underneath requires placing a drainage pan to protect wall from dirt.

Warnings

  • ⚠️For outdoor use, wood preservative coating is essential (recoating once per year is recommended).
  • ⚠️Use stainless steel screws (iron screws will rust).
  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
