Build steps

  1. 1

    Measuring and confirming installation location

    ≈ 15 min

Measure the installation location for the wooden planter box (300×300×300mm). Check window frame size, water splash paths during watering, and sunlight exposure (southeast-facing is ideal).

    Measure
    W 300 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 10

    Tip

    • Make the box width 50mm smaller than the window frame for easier installation.
    • Leave a 20-30mm gap from the wall to prevent stain from drainage water splashes after watering.
    • If attaching to balcony railing, measure railing width in advance.

    Watch out

    • Measure the inside dimensions of the window frame, not the outside. Overlooking frame thickness will cause fit issues.
    • If the location faces north with poor sunlight, plants will not grow well. Check the sunlight duration at the location.
  2. 2

    Cutting and preparing lumber

    ≈ 20 min

Cut SPF lumber 1×6 (12×140mm) into front/back boards (12×140×300mm) ×3, side boards (12×140×300mm) ×3, and bottom boards (12×140×276mm) ×3. Prepare 30 coarse-thread screws 38mm. Also prepare one can of water-based outdoor wood preservative.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 2 / 10

    Tip

    • SPF 1x6 lumber is thin and can have significant warping; check straightness by viewing ends at purchase.
    • Bottom boards are 776mm long ×3, matching the internal width of 776mm inside the 800mm front/back boards.
    • Cutting at home centers is accurate; costs 30-50 yen per cut.

    Watch out

    • Without pilot holes, screws easily split the thin boards.
    • If stainless steel screws are not chosen, iron screws will rust within a year outdoors.
  3. 3

    Sanding

    ≈ 25 min

Sand all lumber pieces starting with #120 grit, then #240 grit. Carefully bevel inner corners to protect plant roots from injury. Sand board ends (wood edges) thoroughly as they absorb water easily.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 3 / 10

    Tip

    • Board ends have exposed fibers that allow water ingress; sealing with preservative here is key to longevity.
    • Sand both outside and inside thoroughly so plant roots don’t catch on rough surfaces.
    • Beveling corners protects plants from damage.

    Watch out

    • Perform sanding outdoors to avoid bringing dust indoors.
    • Painting over leftover dust causes rough paint finish.
  4. 4

Assembling front/back boards and side boards

    ≈ 30 min

Attach side boards inside both ends of front/back boards. Apply a thin layer of wood glue to board edge faces, drill φ3mm pilot holes from front/back boards, then drive two 38mm coarse-thread screws at each joint (total 8 screws). Use a carpenter’s square to check right angles at corners.

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 4 / 10

    Tip

    • 1x6 boards are 12mm thick and thin; 38mm screws length suits two boards plus glue (12+12 + glue).
    • Always drill pilot holes first to prevent splitting thin 12mm boards.
    • Wipe off any glue squeeze-out immediately with a damp cloth.

    Watch out

    • Driving 38mm screws without pilot holes splits the 12mm boards.
    • Too much glue squeezing inside prevents paint adhesion.
  5. 5

Attaching bottom boards and making drainage holes

    ≈ 25 min

Place two bottom boards (140×776mm) inside the box body. Leave a 5mm gap between them for improved drainage. Drill 4-6 drainage holes of 8mm diameter in the center of the bottom boards. Fix each board with two 38mm screws to side and front/back boards after drilling pilot holes.

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 5 / 10

    Tip

    • Drainage holes are essential to prevent soil waterlogging and root rot.
    • A 5mm slit between bottom boards further improves drainage; use chopsticks to keep consistent gap during assembly.
    • Laying horticultural pumice on bottom boards helps prevent clogging of drainage holes.

    Watch out

    • Omitting drainage holes will cause plants to die.
    • Closing gaps completely traps moisture causing wood rot.
  6. 6

Checking right angles and surface prep for painting

    ≈ 15 min

Measure both diagonal lengths of the assembled box with a tape measure; ensure difference is within 2mm. If skewed, correct with clamps. Lightly sand entire surface with #240 sandpaper and remove all dust.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 6 / 10

    Tip

    • Difference in diagonals over 2mm may prevent planter pot from fitting.
    • Glue spots repel paint; sanding removes them.
    • Treat inside surfaces carefully, too.

    Watch out

    • Ignoring skew will cause fitting failure with window frame.
    • Painting over dust results in rough finish.
  7. 7

Applying first coat of outdoor wood preservative

    ≈ 30 min

Use a brush to apply water-based exterior wood preservative (e.g. Xyladecor, Osmo Color) thoroughly on all surfaces (front, back, sides, and edges). Apply liberally on board edges to allow absorption. Let dry naturally for 2-3 hours.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 7 / 10

    Tip

    • Penetration into board ends is key to preservative effect.
    • Water-based product allows brush cleaning with water, good for beginners.
    • Coat inside surfaces to protect wood from moisture in plant soil.

    Watch out

    • Thick coats cause uneven drying and peeling later; thin coats in two applications are best.
    • Painting before drying causes coating to run off; check weather forecast before applying.
  8. 8

    Applying second coat

    ≈ 30 min

After first coat dries, lightly rub surface with #400 sandpaper before applying the second coat. Apply second coat thinner than the first. Proper coating thickness is critical outdoors. Let dry fully (24 hours or more).

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 8 / 10

    Tip

    • Two coats greatly increase protection; essential outdoors.
    • Light #400 sanding just smooths raised fibers, not stripping first coat.
    • Keep drying area dust-free.

    Watch out

    • Rain before drying ruins film; strictly observe 24+ hours drying.
    • Over-sanding may strip first coat.
  9. 9

    Attaching box to window frame

    ≈ 30 min

Secure the box to the window frame using L-brackets or dedicated brackets. Make sure brackets are firmly anchored into structural wood studs or framing behind the wall. After installation, gently shake the box to confirm no looseness or wobble.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    InstallSTEP 9 / 10

    Tip

    • Empty box is light but soil, water, and plants can weigh over 10kg; use strong hardware.
    • Use a stud finder to locate framing before screwing brackets.
    • Removable hanging types are convenient for watering and cleaning.

    Watch out

    • Exceeding bracket load capacity causes falling accidents; calculate total load including soil and water.
    • Gypsum board alone cannot hold screws; always mount into structural framing.
  10. 10

    Planting and final check

    ≈ 25 min

Line the inside with root barrier sheet or nonwoven fabric to prevent direct soil-wood contact. Add 2cm of horticultural pumice, then soil and plants. Water thoroughly and verify drainage through holes. Monitor daily for several days after installation.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 10 / 10

    Tip

    • Root barrier sheet extends wood longevity by 3-5 years; available at 100 yen shops.
    • Pumice prevents drainage hole clogging.
    • Initial heavy watering checks drainage function.

    Watch out

    • No root barrier causes moisture damage and rot.
    • Water dripping below requires a drip tray to protect walls from stains.

Warnings

  • ⚠️When used outdoors, wood preservative coating is essential (reapply yearly).
  • ⚠️Use stainless steel screws (iron screws will rust).
  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before screwing to prevent wood splitting.
