Build steps

  1. 1

    Measurement and Site Confirmation

    ≈ 15 min

Measure the installation site for the corner flower box (350×350×250mm). Check the window frame size, water splash path when watering, and sunlight exposure (southeast-facing is ideal).

    Measure
    W 350 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 10

    Tip

    • Make the box width 50mm smaller than the window frame for easier installation.
    • Structure the box so it is 20-30mm away from the wall to avoid dirt from drainage after watering.
    • If attaching to balcony railing, measure railing width first.

    Watch out

    • Measure the inside dimensions of the window frame, not outside; overlooking the frame thickness causes poor fit.
    • Plants won't grow well with poor sunlight on north-facing spots; confirm daily sunlight duration.
  2. 2

    Cutting and Preparation of Materials

    ≈ 20 min

    From SPF lumber 1x6 (12×140mm), cut front and back boards (12×140×350mm) × 3, side boards (12×140×350mm) × 3, bottom boards (12×140×326mm) × 3. Prepare 30 coarse-thread screws 38mm. Also prepare one can of outdoor-use water-based wood preservative.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 2 / 10

    Tip

    • Since 1x6 lumber is thin, some pieces may warp. Check straightness by viewing the ends when purchasing.
    • Bottom boards are 776mm length × 3 pieces, matching the 776mm inner dimension of 800mm front/back boards.
    • Home center cutting services provide accurate cuts; each cut costs about 30-50 yen.

    Watch out

    • Because of thin boards, screwing without pilot holes causes easy splitting.
    • Select stainless steel screws or they will rust within a year outdoors.
  3. 3

    Sanding

    ≈ 25 min

Sand all components in order from #120 to #240 grit. Since plants will be planted, pay special attention to chamfering interior corners to avoid damaging roots. End grain sections absorb water easily, so sand these sections thoroughly.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 3 / 10

    Tip

    • End grain fibers are exposed and allow water entry; sealing these well with preservative is key for durability.
    • Sand both exterior and interior thoroughly so plant roots don't catch on rough areas.
    • Chamfering corners protects plants from injury, making it essential.

    Watch out

    • Do not bring sanding dust inside since it's outdoor work; perform sanding outdoors.
    • Painting over leftover dust causes rough finish texture.
  4. 4

Assembling Front & Back Boards with Side Boards

    ≈ 30 min

Align side boards inside both ends of the front and back boards. Apply wood glue thinly on end grain surfaces. Drill φ3mm pilot holes from front and back boards, then drive two 38mm coarse-thread screws per joint (4 joints × 2 screws = 8 screws total). Confirm right angles with carpenter's square during assembly.

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 4 / 10

    Tip

    • 1x6 lumber is 12mm thick and thin; 38mm screw length is proper considering two boards plus glue thickness (12+12 mm plus glue).
    • Always drill pilot holes first; 12mm thick boards split easily without.
    • Wipe excess glue immediately with a damp cloth.

    Watch out

    • Driving 38mm screws without pilot holes splits the boards; pilot holes are essential for 12mm boards.
    • Too much glue squeezing inside prevents paint adhesion.
  5. 5

Attaching Bottom Boards and Drilling Drainage Holes

    ≈ 25 min

Place two bottom boards (140×776mm) inside the assembled box side by side. Leave a 5mm gap between them to improve drainage. Drill 4 to 6 drainage holes of 8mm diameter in the center of bottom boards for excess water drainage. Secure bottom boards to side and front/back boards with 2 screws each using pilot holes and 38mm screws.

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 5 / 10

    Tip

    • Drainage holes are mandatory; no holes cause soil waterlogging and root rot.
    • A 5mm slit between bottom boards further improves drainage; use chopsticks as spacers when fixing to maintain equal gaps.
    • Placing lightweight lava rock above the bottom boards prevents blockage of drainage holes.

    Watch out

    • Forgetting drainage holes causes plant death; always drill holes.
    • Fitting bottom boards tightly without gaps traps moisture and causes wood rot.
  6. 6

Right Angle Check and Preparation for Painting

    ≈ 15 min

Measure the diagonals of the assembled box with a tape measure; ensure the difference is within 2mm. If out of alignment, correct using clamps. Then lightly sand the entire box with #240 grit and remove dust.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 6 / 10

    Tip

    • Diagonal difference over 2mm risks not fitting plant pots properly; aim for 2mm or less.
    • Glue spots repel paint; sanding removes these to ensure proper adhesion.
    • Treat inside surfaces carefully in the same way.

    Watch out

    • Leaving box misaligned causes poor fit with window frame.
    • Painting over remaining dust results in rough surface finish.
  7. 7

Applying First Coat of Outdoor Wood Preservative

    ≈ 30 min

Apply water-based outdoor wood preservative (such as Xyladecor or Osmo Color) with a brush to all surfaces including front and back, inside and outside, and end grain. Apply extra preservative to end grain for deep penetration. Allow to air dry for 2 to 3 hours.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 7 / 10

    Tip

    • Penetration into end grain is key for preservative effectiveness; focus on these areas.
    • Water-based preservatives are easy to clean with water, ideal for beginners.
    • Coating interior also protects wood from moisture in plant soil.

    Watch out

    • Applying too thick a coat causes uneven drying and later peeling; thin coats twice is standard.
    • Exposure to rain before drying causes coating to wash off; check weather forecast before application.
  8. 8

    Applying Second Coat

    ≈ 30 min

After first coat dries, lightly sand surface with #400 grit sandpaper, then apply second, thinner coat. Solid coating formation is important for outdoor durability. Allow full curing for at least 24 hours.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 8 / 10

    Tip

    • Two coats greatly improve protection; required for outdoor use.
    • Light sanding with #400 grit is just a gentle touch to remove fibers.
    • Keep drying area free from dust.

    Watch out

    • Exposure to rain before drying causes paint to run; adhere to 24-hour drying.
    • Over-sanding during intermediate sanding can remove the first coat.
  9. 9

    Attaching to Window Frame

    ≈ 30 min

Secure the box to the window frame using L-shaped brackets or dedicated mounting brackets. Ensure brackets are firmly anchored into wall studs or frame members. After installation, gently shake box to check for any looseness.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    InstallSTEP 9 / 10

    Tip

    • The empty box is light, but soil, water, and plants can exceed 10 kg; use strong brackets.
    • Use a stud finder to locate studs before drilling screws.
    • Removable hanging brackets are available and convenient for watering and cleaning.

    Watch out

    • Exceeding bracket weight capacity risks falling accidents; calculate box plus full load weight.
    • Drywall alone cannot hold screws; always anchor into framing studs.
  10. 10

    Planting and Final Inspection

    ≈ 25 min

Line interior with root barrier sheet or nonwoven fabric to separate soil and wood. Lay 2cm of lightweight lava rock, then add soil and plants. Water to confirm drainage via holes. Observe daily for several days after installation.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 10 / 10

    Tip

    • Root barrier sheet extends wood life by 3-5 years; available at 100-yen stores.
    • Lava rock prevents drainage holes from clogging.
    • First watering should be thorough to confirm drainage function.

    Watch out

    • Direct soil contact without barrier causes wood decay from moisture.
    • Water draining underneath can soil surfaces; place drainage tray to protect walls.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Preservative coating is essential for outdoor use (reapply once a year recommended).
  • ⚠️Use stainless steel screws (iron screws will rust).
  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before screwing to prevent wood splitting.
