Build steps
- 1
Measurement and site confirmation
≈ 15 minMeasure the installation location for the balcony flower box (900×200×200 mm). Check the window frame size, water splash paths during watering, and sunlight exposure (southeast-facing is ideal).
MeasureW 900 mmMeasureSTEP 1 / 10Tip
- Make the box width 50 mm smaller than the window frame to facilitate installation.
- Design so the box is spaced 20-30 mm from the wall to avoid dirt from drainage water on walls or windows.
- If attaching to a balcony railing, first measure the railing width.
Watch out
- Measure the inner dimension of the window frame, not the outer. Overlooking frame thickness will cause fitting issues.
- Plants won't grow well if placed on a poorly lit north-facing side; confirm sunlight hours at the installation site.
- 2
Cutting and preparation of parts
≈ 20 minCut SPF lumber 1x6 (12×140 mm) into front and rear boards (12×140×900 mm) x 2, side boards (12×140×200 mm) x 2, and bottom boards (12×140×876 mm) x 2. Prepare 30 coarse-thread screws 38 mm and one can of outdoor water-based wood preservative.
CutUse the in-store cut serviceCutSTEP 2 / 10Tip
- Since 1x6 lumber is thin, some pieces may warp. Check straightness at purchase by viewing from the end.
- Bottom boards are 776 mm long x 2, matching the 776 mm internal width of front and rear boards of 800 mm.
- Cutting at the home center yields accurate cuts. Cost is about 30-50 JPY per cut.
Watch out
- Without pilot holes, screws easily split the thin boards.
- If stainless steel screws are not chosen, iron screws will rust within one year outdoors.
- 3
Sanding
≈ 25 minSand all parts in order using #120 then #240 grit sandpaper. Carefully chamfer inside corners to avoid damaging plant roots. Pay special attention to sanding end grain because it absorbs water.
Sand#120SandSTEP 3 / 10Tip
- End grain fibers are exposed and absorb water; sealing them well with preservative is key to longevity.
- Sand both outside and inside thoroughly so plant roots do not snag.
- Chamfering corners protects plants from injury.
Watch out
- Avoid bringing sanding dust inside; perform sanding outdoors.
- Painting over residual dust causes rough finish.
- 4
Assembly of front, rear, and side boards
≈ 30 minAlign side boards on the inner ends of front and rear boards, apply a thin layer of wood glue on the end grain surfaces, then drill φ3 mm pilot holes from the front and rear boards and drive two 38 mm coarse-thread screws per joint (8 screws total for 4 joints). Confirm right angles at corners using a carpenter's square during assembly.
Build the frameTighten joints firmlyAssembleSTEP 4 / 10Tip
- For 12 mm thick 1x6 boards, 38 mm screws appropriately account for thickness of bottom boards plus glue.
- Always drill pilot holes first to prevent splitting of thin 12 mm boards.
- Immediately wipe off glue squeeze-out with a damp cloth.
Watch out
- Driving 38 mm screws without pilot holes will split 12 mm thick boards.
- Excessive glue squeezing inside can prevent paint adhesion.
- 5
Bottom board installation and drainage hole processing
≈ 25 minPlace two bottom boards (140×776 mm) inside the box with a 5 mm gap between them for improved drainage. Drill four to six 8 mm diameter drainage holes in the center of the boards. Drill pilot holes, then fix bottom boards to side and front/rear boards with two coarse-thread screws 38 mm per attachment point.
Drill a hole下穴 φ3.5mmDrillSTEP 5 / 10Tip
- Drainage holes are essential; without them, soil becomes waterlogged leading to root rot.
- Inserting a 5 mm slit between two bottom boards further improves drainage; use chopsticks as spacers for uniform gaps.
- Laying pumice stones above bottom boards helps prevent drainage holes clogging.
Watch out
- Forgetting drainage holes will cause plants to die.
- Attaching bottom boards completely without gaps causes moisture to accumulate and wood to rot.
- 6
Right angle confirmation and surface preparation for painting
≈ 15 minMeasure diagonal lengths of the assembled box with a tape measure and confirm difference is within 2 mm. If misaligned, adjust with clamps. Lightly sand entire surface with #240 grit and remove dust.
InspectNo wobble ✓InspectSTEP 6 / 10Tip
- Difference over 2 mm in diagonals risks plant pots not fitting properly; aim for within 2 mm.
- Glue spots repel paint; sand them off.
- Treat inside thoroughly as well.
Watch out
- Ignoring distortion can prevent fitting into window frame.
- Leaving dust before painting causes rough surface.
- 7
First coat of outdoor wood preservative
≈ 30 minApply water-based outdoor wood preservative (e.g. Xyladecor, Osmo Color) on all surfaces (front, back, sides, and end grain) with a brush. Saturate end grains particularly well. Allow natural drying for 2-3 hours.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 7 / 10Tip
- Penetration into end grains determines preservative effectiveness; focus application there.
- Water-based preservative wash brushes with water, friendly for beginners.
- Coat inside as well to protect wood from moisture in planting soil.
Watch out
- Over-thick application causes uneven drying and later peeling; apply thin coats twice.
- Do not expose to rain before drying or film will wash off. Check weather forecast before painting.
- 8
Second coat of preservative
≈ 30 minAfter first coat dries, lightly sand surface with #400 grit then apply second coat more thinly than the first. Since box is for outdoor use, forming a solid protective film is important. Dry completely for 24 hours or more.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 8 / 10Tip
- Two coats greatly improve protection and are essential outdoors.
- Light sanding (#400) is just to smooth raised fibers.
- Keep drying area dust-free.
Watch out
- Exposure to rain before full drying causes film to wash away; strictly follow 24-hour drying.
- Avoid aggressive sanding that removes first coat film.
- 9
Attachment to window frame
≈ 30 minSecure the box to the window frame using L-brackets or dedicated brackets. Ensure brackets firmly anchor into wall studs (wood frame or posts). After installation, gently shake box to check for wobbling.
Fix to the wallAnchor to studsInstallSTEP 9 / 10Tip
- Empty box is light, but soil, water, and plants exceed 10 kg. Use brackets with sufficient strength.
- Use stud finder to locate wall framing before screwing.
- Removable hanging styles are also available and convenient for watering and cleaning.
Watch out
- Exceeding bracket load capacity risks accidental falling. Calculate box plus saturated soil weight.
- Cannot fasten to gypsum board alone; always anchor into studs.
- 10
Planting and final confirmation
≈ 25 minLine inside with root barrier sheet or nonwoven fabric to prevent direct contact between soil and wood. Place 2 cm pumice stones, then add soil and plants. Water sufficiently and confirm drainage through holes. Monitor daily for several days after installation.
Done!Done — nice work!DoneSTEP 10 / 10Tip
- Root barrier sheet extends wood life by 3-5 years; available at 100 yen shops.
- Pumice stones prevent drainage hole clogging.
- Initial watering should be generous and confirms adequate drainage.
Watch out
- Without root barrier sheet, wood will rot from moisture.
- Water dripping down during watering; prepare a drainage pan below to protect wall from dirt.
Warnings
- ⚠️Wood preservative coating is essential for outdoor use (recoating once a year is recommended).
- ⚠️Use stainless steel screws (iron screws will rust).
- ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
