Build steps

  1. 1

Final confirmation of materials and tools

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare two side boards of SPF lumber 1×10 (19×400×1900mm), six shelf boards (19×400×900mm), one 4mm plywood back board (900×1900mm), forty 38mm coarse-thread screws, and four 50mm L-shaped brackets. Tools include electric driver, saw, measuring tape, carpenter's square, #120 and #240 sandpaper, level, two F-clamps, brush and paint tray, staple gun or finishing nails.

    Measure
    W 900 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 20

    Tip

    • SPF lumber tends to warp. When purchasing, visually inspect each board to select those with warp less than 1mm.
    • L-shaped brackets and screws are critical for anti-tip safety; never omit them.

    Watch out

    • Check each SPF board individually for warp, cracks, and knots before purchase. Using boards warped more than 1mm will cause shelf boards to distort.
    • The 4mm thick plywood back board is thin and easily bends during handling. After cutting, store it upright immediately.
  2. 2

    Securing the workspace

    ≈ 10 min

Secure a workspace where the 1600mm tall bookshelf can be assembled upright. Ensure ceiling height of at least 2200mm and floor space about 1500×1200mm. Spread a blue sheet on the floor and support long lumber with two sawhorses.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 2 / 20

    Tip

    • Assemble the bookshelf lying on the floor and stand it upright only in the final step. This allows assembly even in small rooms.

    Watch out

    • Standing the assembled bookshelf upright alone is difficult; two people working together is safer.
    • If ceiling height is below 2000mm, the bookshelf may hit the ceiling when standing it up; confirm in advance.
  3. 3

Creating the cutting list and ordering cuts

    ≈ 20 min

Submit to the home center a cutting list: two side boards cut to 1600mm, six shelf boards cut to 900mm, and one back board sized 900×1900mm. If cutting yourself, support long boards (1600mm) on sawhorses and cut with a push cut. Aim for cutting accuracy within ±2mm.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 3 / 20

    Tip

    • Cutting fee is 30–50 yen per cut; ordering all cuts costs around 1000 yen and reduces cutting time from 30 minutes to immediate.
    • Because all six shelf boards are the same size, bundle and cut them at once for highest accuracy.

    Watch out

    • Even straight cuts of 19mm thick SPF lumber tend to warp; use a guide to ensure straight cuts.
    • 4mm plywood is soft and will deform if unsupported during cutting; support from underneath.
  4. 4

Sanding all components (#120 then #240 grit)

    ≈ 40 min

Sand all parts starting with #120 grit followed by #240 grit. Pay special attention to the shelf support faces of side boards, the upper and lower surfaces of shelf boards, and end grain. Rounding the shelf edges where hands touch makes handling easier. After sanding, thoroughly vacuum the wood dust.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 4 / 20

    Tip

    • Sanding shelf surfaces to a smooth finish improves ease of sliding books in and out.
    • End grain fibers raise easily; start sanding with #120 grit particularly carefully.

    Watch out

    • SPF lumber is soft; over-sanding changes dimensions. Use #120 grit mainly; #240 grit only for finishing.
    • Rounding edges excessively looks clumsy; keep edge radius about 2mm.
  5. 5

Marking shelf positions on side boards

    ≈ 15 min

Place the two side boards side by side and mark the positions for six shelves in pencil. Shelf spacing can be six 300mm increments from bottom (total 1800mm) or design with wider spacing at top for display. Clamp the side boards together to ensure marks line up perfectly on both.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 5 / 20

    Tip

    • Clamping side boards together before marking ensures identical shelf position markings.
    • Use A4 (297mm height), A5 (210mm), and paperback (150mm) book heights as guides for shelf spacing for practical storage.

    Watch out

    • Misaligned shelf positions result in slanted shelves. Mark both boards simultaneously clamped to prevent this.
    • Ignoring 19mm shelf board thickness leads to narrower actual spacing than intended.
  6. 6

    Preparing pilot holes

    ≈ 20 min

Drill 3mm diameter pilot holes at marked positions from side board outer side through to shelf board end grain. Use masking tape on the drill bit as a depth guide. Drill through the 19mm side board and 10mm into the shelf board, totaling 29mm depth.

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 6 / 20

    Tip

    • 3mm pilot holes correspond to approximately 70% diameter of 38mm coarse-thread screw shank (4.2mm), preventing wood splitting.
    • Each shelf has four pilot holes (two on each side board) totaling 24 holes; check to avoid omissions.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient pilot hole depth prevents screws from seating fully; drilling slightly deeper is safer.
    • Avoid drilling through to the opposite side of the shelf board by limiting depth with tape on the drill bit.
  7. 7

Temporarily attaching shelf boards to one side board

    ≈ 20 min

Lay one side board flat on the floor and set the six shelf boards upright aligned to the marked positions. Temporarily fix with F-clamps. Use a carpenter's square to check that shelves meet side board at right angles, visually confirming areas where square cannot fit.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 20

    Tip

    • Assemble shelves from bottom to top for better stability.
    • One clamp per shelf board required; better if six clamps are available, otherwise use two clamps sequentially.

    Watch out

    • Incorrect right angle connection causes overall parallelogram distortion; always verify with square.
    • Shelves protruding beyond side board edges prevent back board installation later.
  8. 8

Screwing one side board in place

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through the pilot holes from side board outer side into shelf board ends. Use two screws per location, totaling 12 screws for six shelves. Sink screw heads flush or 0.5mm below side board surface. Set electric driver torque medium; final tightening is hand-turned one quarter turn.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 8 / 20

    Tip

    • Slightly offsetting paired screws vertically improves withdrawal resistance.
    • If screw holes are visible and unsightly, optional wooden dowel plugs can hide them later.

    Watch out

    • Over-tightening screws in 19mm SPF end grain can split wood; use medium torque.
    • Screws driven at an angle protruding on opposite side must be removed, filled with wood filler, and re-screwed elsewhere.
  9. 9

Preparing to attach the opposite side board

    ≈ 15 min

Stand assembly fixed on one side and place remaining side board on opposite side. Align shelf ends to marked lines on side board and temporarily fix with clamps. Confirm vertical alignment and right angles with assembly standing upright.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 9 / 20

    Tip

    • Two-person work recommended: one supports, one clamps for accuracy.
    • Opposite side board marking done initially; do not re-mark.

    Watch out

    • One person forcibly attempting this risks shelves falling to floor; always use two people or brace assembly against wall.
  10. 10

    Screwing the opposite side board

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws from outer side of opposite side board through pilot holes into shelf board ends, two screws per location totaling 12 screws. This completes fixing side boards and six shelf boards, finishing main bookshelf structure.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 10 / 20

    Tip

    • After fastening both sides, verify shelf levels with a level. Loosen and adjust any tilted shelf, then re-tighten screws.

    Watch out

    • Fastening screws on both sides simultaneously causes distortion; complete all screws on one side before starting the other.
  11. 11

Checking overall level and diagonal measurements

    ≈ 15 min

Place assembled body on floor. Use level to confirm shelf boards are horizontal. Measure diagonals from top-left to bottom-right and top-right to bottom-left; difference must be within 5mm. Correct distortion with clamps, slightly loosening screws, then add screws to fix.

    Check level
    Level ✓
    LevelSTEP 11 / 20

    Tip

    • Diagonal length difference over 5mm indicates parallelogram distortion; correct before attaching back board.
    • Back board increases rigidity; correct distortions before attaching it.

    Watch out

    • Shelf board sagging (center droops) worsens with book weight. Shelf length of 600mm acceptable; over 1000mm requires reinforcement consideration.
  12. 12

    Preparing to attach back board

    ≈ 10 min

Place 4mm plywood back board (900×1900mm) on back of bookshelf. Align corners and confirm diagonals match bookshelf body. Attaching back board corrects final distortion. Temporarily fix with painter's tape.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 12 / 20

    Tip

    • Back board suppresses frame distortion. Attaching slightly skewed reduces rigidity.
    • 4mm plywood can be easily fixed with staple gun; when using finishing nails, pre-drill pilot holes.

    Watch out

    • If back board is larger than bookshelf, trim excess. If smaller, leave even gap within 5mm at edges.
  13. 13

    Stapling the back board

    ≈ 20 min

Fasten back board to side boards and shelf boards using 15mm staples from staple gun or finishing nails. Space fasteners every 100-150mm around perimeter and shelf board positions. Start at corners and fasten along diagonals sequentially to minimize distortion.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 13 / 20

    Tip

    • Staple gun costs around 1500-2500 yen at home centers but speeds work more than nails; worthwhile investment for bookshelf making.
    • Mark shelf positions on back board in pencil before fastening to avoid missing shelf fixings.

    Watch out

    • Staples protruding inside could damage books; 15mm staples are appropriate for 19mm thickness.
    • Failing to fasten around all edges and shelf positions causes back board to warp when loaded.
  14. 14

    Preparing to attach L-shaped brackets

    ≈ 15 min

Attach four 50mm L-shaped brackets, two each on upper left and right rear side boards. One side attaches to bookshelf upper edge, the other side to wall for fixing. Use stud finder to verify stud locations behind wall.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 14 / 20

    Tip

    • Low-cost stud finders lack accuracy; recommend home center model costing 1000-2000 yen.
    • Studs usually spaced 455mm apart; locating one helps estimate neighbors.

    Watch out

    • Fixing only to gypsum board without studs fails anti-tip function; always screw into studs.
    • If bracket position does not align with stud, shift bracket laterally so screw hits stud center.
  15. 15

    Attaching L-shaped brackets to bookshelf

    ≈ 10 min

Secure four L-shaped brackets to bookshelf side boards' outside at upper part. Use 38mm coarse-thread screws at bracket holes. Fix bracket flush or no more than 5mm proud of side board so bracket extends perpendicular to wall.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 15 / 20

    Tip

    • L-shaped bracket bend faces wall side; screw holes face bookshelf side; install accordingly.

    Watch out

    • Misaligned brackets create gaps between bracket and wall during fixing; check and adjust with level.
  16. 16

Placing bookshelf and securing to wall

    ≈ 20 min

Stand bookshelf and move to installation place (two people recommended). Position flush against wall. Using screws 45-50mm length, drive through wall-side holes of L-brackets into wall studs. Secure all four points to complete anti-tip installation.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 16 / 20

    Tip

    • Screws used for wall fixing must be longer (45-50mm) than 38mm screws for proper stud penetration.
    • Wall fixing is the most critical step; do not neglect to prevent injury or fatality during earthquakes.

    Watch out

    • Anchor screws in gypsum board alone lack strength; always fix to studs.
    • If gap between bookshelf and wall exceeds 5mm, insert shims before fastening. Bracket effectiveness reduces if not tight.
  17. 17

    Cleaning before painting

    ≈ 10 min

Vacuum and wipe entire bookshelf with dry cloth to remove all wood dust, oil, and fingerprints. Cleanliness greatly affects finish quality. Optionally, mask plywood back board as it absorbs paint quickly.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 17 / 20

    Tip

    • Clean wipe sequence: dry wipe, wet wipe, then dry wipe again to perfectly remove dust.

    Watch out

    • Remaining wood dust causes roughness in finish. Use lighting to detect dust.
  18. 18

Applying first coat of oil stain

    ≈ 40 min

Apply oil stain (e.g. Watco Oil, Kinura) evenly with brush. Sequence: outside of side boards, shelf board surfaces, shelf board undersides, then back board. After 10-15 minutes, wipe off excess with dry cloth. Use approximately 60-70% of total oil amount for first coat, as absorption is high.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 18 / 20

    Tip

    • Oil stain application involves applying, waiting 10-15 minutes, then wiping off excess to avoid stickiness.
    • Brush width 30-50mm is optimal for bookshelf work; too wide brushes miss details.

    Watch out

    • Not wiping off excess causes stickiness for over a week; always wipe.
    • Plywood back board absorbs quickly and may cause unevenness; apply thinly and wipe carefully.
  19. 19

    Second coat of oil stain

    ≈ 25 min

After 24 hours drying of first coat, apply second coat using 30-50% of first coat amount. Also wipe off excess. Two coats deepen color and improve protection. Allow 24-48 hours for complete drying.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 19 / 20

    Tip

    • Second coat corrects color unevenness from first coat; apply evenly and thinly.
    • Additional coats may be applied for darker color.

    Watch out

    • Do not skip wiping after second coat; excess oil causes uneven finish.
    • During drying, protect from dust and insects by keeping indoors.
  20. 20

    Completion, start use, and inspection

    ≈ 15 min

After at least 48 hours complete drying of oil, place books to begin use. Load heavy books on lower shelves and lighter books on upper shelves for stability. After one week of use, check screws and L-bracket fixings and tighten if needed.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 20 / 20

    Tip

    • Concentrate heavy books (encyclopedias etc.) on bottom two shelves; use paperbacks and regular books on top shelves to reduce weight.
    • Reapply oil every 3-5 years to restore gloss and protection.

    Watch out

    • Placing books immediately after finishing oil may cause oil transfer to books; always wait 48 hours.
    • Books absorb moisture; place dehumidifiers in humid seasons. Bookshelf may warp due to moisture.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
  • ⚠️When fixing to the wall, always locate the studs (do not fix only to gypsum board).
