  1. 1

Final Check of Materials and Tools

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare two side boards of SPF lumber 1x10 (19×400×1800mm), six shelf boards (19×400×1200mm), one 4mm plywood back panel (1200×1800mm), 48 coarse-thread screws 38mm, and four 50mm L-shaped brackets. Tools needed are electric driver, saw, measuring tape, carpenter's square, #120/#240 sandpaper, level, two F-clamps, brush and paint tray, and a stapler or small nails.

    Measure
    W 1200 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 20

    Tip

    • SPF lumber tends to warp. Check each board's warp visually at purchase; select those with warpage within 1mm.
    • L-shaped brackets and screws are the lifeline for overturn prevention. Never omit them.

    Watch out

    • Check each SPF board for warp, cracks, and knots before purchase. Using boards warped over 1mm will distort the shelf boards.
    • 4mm plywood back panel is thin and easily damaged during handling. Store standing immediately after cutting.
  2. 2

    Securing a Work Area

    ≈ 10 min

Secure a workspace where a 1800mm tall bookshelf can be assembled standing. Ceiling height 2200mm or more, floor area about 1500×1200mm is ample. Lay a blue sheet and support long boards on two sawhorses.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 2 / 20

    Tip

    • Assembly is done lying on the floor; raising upright is the final step. Work possible even in narrow rooms.

    Watch out

    • Assembly upright is difficult alone; two-person operation is safer.
    • If ceiling height is below 2000mm, bookshelf will hit ceiling when standing up. Confirm beforehand.
  3. 3

Creating Cut List and Ordering Cuts

    ≈ 20 min

Submit a cut list to the home center: two side boards (1800mm), six shelf boards (1200mm), back panel (1200×1800mm). If cutting yourself, support 1800mm boards on two sawhorses and crosscut carefully. Aim for cut accuracy within ±2mm.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 3 / 20

    Tip

    • Cutting costs 30-50 yen per cut; complete cut order totals about 1000 yen, saves 30 minutes compared to self-cut.
    • Bundling six shelf boards for one cut yields the best accuracy.

    Watch out

    • 19mm thick SPF lumber warps easily even in straight cuts. Use a guide for straight cuts.
    • 4mm plywood is soft; support from below when cutting or it will warp and deform.
  4. 4

    Sanding All Components (#120→#240)

    ≈ 40 min

Sand all components starting with #120 grit, then #240. Pay attention to shelf support surfaces on side boards, top and bottom faces of shelf boards, and wood edges. Rounding shelf edges by about 2mm radius improves usability. Vacuum off wood dust thoroughly after sanding.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 4 / 20

    Tip

    • Smooth shelf surfaces make retracting and inserting books easier.
    • Wood edges tend to have raised fibers; sand carefully starting from #120 grit.

    Watch out

    • SPF is soft; sanding too much can affect dimensions. Use #120 as primary sanding, #240 only for finishing.
    • Over-rounding edges looks bulky; keep radius about 2mm.
  5. 5

Marking Shelf Positions on Side Boards

    ≈ 15 min

Place the two side boards together and mark shelf positions for six levels with pencil. Shelf spacing can be uniformly 300mm from bottom for all six shelves (using 1800mm total height) or design with wider spacing on top for decoration. Ensure marks on both boards align perfectly by clamping together and marking simultaneously.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 5 / 20

    Tip

    • Clamping side boards together before marking ensures shelf positions match exactly on both sides.
    • Using book heights such as A4 (297mm), A5 (210mm), and Bunkobon (150mm) is a good guide for shelf spacing.

    Watch out

    • If shelf positions differ between sides, shelves will be skewed. Simultaneous marking is essential.
    • Remember shelf thickness of 19mm when calculating spacing; otherwise, the actual space will be narrower than expected.
  6. 6

    Preparing Pilot Holes

    ≈ 20 min

Drill Ø3mm pilot holes at marked points. Pilot holes penetrate side boards from the outside towards the shelf board edge. Mark drill depth with masking tape: total drilling depth is the 19mm side board thickness plus 10mm into shelf board (total 29mm).

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 6 / 20

    Tip

    • Ø3mm pilot hole is about 70% of 4.2mm screw shaft diameter, reliably preventing wood splitting.
    • For each shelf board, drill two pilot holes on both left and right side boards: 6 shelves × 4 holes = 24 holes total. Confirm none are missed.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient pilot hole depth prevents screws from fully seating. Drill slightly deeper for safety.
    • Do not drill all the way through shelf boards; use tape depth stop to avoid breakthrough.
  7. 7

Temporarily Fixing Shelf Boards to One Side Board

    ≈ 20 min

Lay one side board flat on the floor and stand the six shelf boards upright aligned with marked positions. Use F-clamps to temporarily fix each shelf board, checking right angle between side board and shelf board with carpenter’s square. Where the square cannot reach, visually confirm.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 20

    Tip

    • Install shelves from bottom up for stable assembly.
    • One clamp per shelf board is ideal (six clamps total). When using only two clamps, proceed sequentially.

    Watch out

    • If right angles are off during fixing, the whole assembly will become a parallelogram shape. Always verify with carpenter's square.
    • Shelf boards protruding beyond side board edges will prevent back panel installation.
  8. 8

    Screwing One Side

    ≈ 15 min

Drive two coarse-thread screws 38mm through pilot holes from side board outer face into shelf board edges at each shelf position for six shelves (12 screws total). Sink screw heads flush or up to 0.5mm below side board surface. Use medium torque on impact driver; finish final quarter turn by hand.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 8 / 20

    Tip

    • Slightly offsetting two screws vertically improves pull-out strength.
    • If screw heads are visible, optionally fill holes with wooden dowel plugs later.

    Watch out

    • Over-tightening screws can split 19mm thick SPF lumber edges. Stop at medium torque.
    • If screws go in at an angle and protrude through opposite side, remove, fill hole with wood filler, and redrive in a different spot.
  9. 9

Preparing to Attach Opposite Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Stand the unit with shelf boards fixed on one side. Place the second side board aligning shelf board ends to marked lines. Temporarily clamp. Check right angles with unit standing upright.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 9 / 20

    Tip

    • Two-person operation recommended: one supports while the other clamps to maintain accuracy.
    • The marks on opposite side board were previously made; do not re-mark.

    Watch out

    • Working alone risks shelves detaching and falling. Always work with two people or brace against a wall.
  10. 10

    Screwing the Opposite Side

    ≈ 15 min

Drive coarse-thread screws 38mm through pilot holes from opposite side board outer face into shelf boards. Two screws per shelf board position, six shelves, totaling 12 screws. This completes fixing of both side boards and shelf boards, finalizing the main structure.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 10 / 20

    Tip

    • After fixing both sides, check level of all shelves with a level. If any shelf is tilted, loosen screws and adjust.

    Watch out

    • Driving screws simultaneously on both sides causes distortion. Fully screw one side before the other.
  11. 11

Checking Level and Diagonal Measurements for Entire Unit

    ≈ 15 min

Place assembled bookshelf on floor. Verify each shelf’s level with a level. Measure diagonals from top-left to bottom-right and top-right to bottom-left with tape measure; difference should be within 5mm. If warped, loosen clamps, adjust, and add screws to secure.

    Check level
    Level ✓
    LevelSTEP 11 / 20

    Tip

    • Diagonal difference over 5mm indicates a parallelogram shape; correct before attaching back panel.
    • Back panel greatly improves rigidity. Correct distortions prior to installation.

    Watch out

    • Shelf sag (center lower than edges) worsens under book weight. Acceptable for shelf lengths up to 600mm. For shelves over 1000mm, consider reinforcement.
  12. 12

    Preparing to Attach Back Panel

    ≈ 10 min

Align 4mm plywood back panel (1200×1800mm) to the bookshelf rear surface with corners matched. Confirm diagonal lengths match bookshelf's diagonals to finalize positioning (back panel helps final adjust unit distortion). Lightly tape back panel to the unit with masking tape.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 12 / 20

    Tip

    • Back panel is crucial to prevent distortion; slight misalignment reduces rigidity.
    • Stapler is an easy method to attach back panel; if using nails, drill pilot holes.

    Watch out

    • If back panel is larger than unit, trim protruding edges. If smaller, keep uniform gaps less than 5mm around edges.
  13. 13

    Stapling Back Panel

    ≈ 20 min

Attach back panel to side boards and shelves with stapler (15mm staples) or small nails. Space staples/nails every 100-150mm around perimeter and at shelf positions. Begin at corners, then staple/nail along diagonals in sequence to minimize distortion.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 13 / 20

    Tip

    • Stapler costs 1500-2500 yen at home centers; faster than nails and worth investment for bookshelf assembly.
    • Mark shelf positions lightly with pencil on back panel before stapling to avoid missing shelf fixings.

    Watch out

    • Staples protruding inside may damage books; 15mm staples are appropriate for 19mm thickness.
    • Stapling only along four edges without shelf positions can cause back panel to bow.
  14. 14

    Preparing to Attach L-shaped Brackets

    ≈ 15 min

Attach four 50mm L-shaped brackets at upper rear of bookshelf: two each on left and right sides. One flange is secured to bookshelf top edge; the other flange will be fixed to wall. Locate wall studs using a stud finder beforehand.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 14 / 20

    Tip

    • Cheap stud finders (100 yen store) have poor accuracy. Purchase home center grade (1000-2000 yen) recommended.
    • Studs are usually spaced 455mm; finding one helps locate neighbors.

    Watch out

    • Screws in drywall alone do not prevent tipping; screws must be anchored in studs.
    • When bracket positions don't align with studs, adjust bracket position left/right to center screws on studs.
  15. 15

    Attaching L-shaped Brackets to Bookshelf

    ≈ 10 min

Attach four L-shaped brackets to bookshelf upper side boards from outside using coarse-thread screws 38mm into bracket's predefined holes. Fix brackets flush or within 5mm projection, ensuring bracket flange faces wall perpendicularly.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 15 / 20

    Tip

    • Ensure bracket orientation is correct: bent flange faces wall, screw holes face bookshelf.

    Watch out

    • Incorrectly installed brackets lead to gap between bracket and wall. Use level to verify.
  16. 16

Installing Bookshelf and Securing to Wall

    ≈ 20 min

With two people, move bookshelf to final location. Place tightly against wall. Drive coarse-thread screws 45-50mm through L-shaped brackets into wall studs (use supplied or compatible screws). Secure all four brackets to complete overturn prevention.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 16 / 20

    Tip

    • Wall screws must be longer (45-50mm) than bookshelf screws (38mm) to reach studs.
    • Wall anchoring is the most critical step; avoid shortcuts to prevent injury or death in earthquakes.

    Watch out

    • Drywall anchors alone lack strength; always screw into studs.
    • If gap between wall and bookshelf exceeds 5mm, use shims before fixing; unsecured brackets lose effectiveness.
  17. 17

    Cleaning Before Finishing

    ≈ 10 min

Vacuum entire bookshelf and wipe with dry cloth to remove wood dust, oil, and fingerprints completely. Cleaning quality before finishing greatly affects final result. Optionally mask plywood back panel before finishing due to rapid paint absorption.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 17 / 20

    Tip

    • Use a three-step wipe before finishing: dry wipe → damp wipe → dry wipe for best results.

    Watch out

    • Remaining wood dust causes rough finish surface. Check carefully under bright light.
  18. 18

    First Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 40 min

Apply oil stain (e.g., Watco Oil, Kinura) to the entire bookshelf surface with a brush in sequence: side board outer surfaces → shelf board tops → shelf board undersides → back panel. After 10-15 minutes, wipe off excess with dry cloth. Use about 60-70% of total oil for first coat due to high absorption.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 18 / 20

    Tip

    • Oil stain application must be followed by 10-15 minute wait then wipe off or finish will remain sticky.
    • Brush width of 30-50mm is optimal for bookshelf work; a wider brush misses fine detail.

    Watch out

    • Failure to wipe off leaves sticky surface for over a week.
    • Plywood back panel absorbs quickly and unevenly; apply thinly and wipe carefully.
  19. 19

    Second Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 25 min

After 24 hours drying, apply a second coat using about 1/3 to 1/2 quantity of the first coat. Wipe off excess as before. Two coats deepen color and improve protection. Final drying takes 24-48 hours.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 19 / 20

    Tip

    • Second coat corrects color unevenness from first coat; apply thin and evenly.
    • Add a third coat if a darker color is desired.

    Watch out

    • Do not forget wiping off after second coat. Thick finish causes uneven color.
    • During drying, keep indoors free from dust and insects.
  20. 20

    Completion, Use, and Inspection

    ≈ 15 min

After complete oil drying (48 hours), arrange books and begin use. Place heavy books on lower shelves and lighter books on upper shelves for balance and stability. After one week, recheck screw tightness and L-bracket fixation; retighten if necessary.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 20 / 20

    Tip

    • Concentrate heavy books (e.g., encyclopedias) on bottom two shelves; upper shelves hold light paperback books.
    • Re-oil every 3-5 years to restore luster and protective effect.

    Watch out

    • Placing books immediately can stain them with fresh oil; dry at least 48 hours first.
    • Books absorb moisture; use dehumidifiers in rainy season to prevent bookshelf warping.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting
