Build steps

  1. 1

Final Check of Materials and Tools

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare 2 side boards of SPF lumber 1x8 (19×150×800mm), 6 shelf boards (19×150×800mm), 1 plywood back board (4mm thick, 800×800mm), 16 coarse-thread screws 38mm, 4 L-brackets 50mm. Tools: electric screwdriver, saw, measuring tape, carpenter's square, #120 and #240 sandpapers, level, two F-clamps, brush and paint tray, and a stapler or small nails.

    Measure
    W 800 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 20

    Tip

    • SPF lumber warps easily. When purchasing, check each piece visually to ensure warping is within 1mm.
    • L-brackets and screws are the lifeline for 'tipping prevention'. Never omit them.

    Watch out

    • Check each SPF lumber piece for warping, splitting, and knots before buying. Using lumber warped over 1mm distorts the shelf boards.
    • The 4mm plywood back board is thin and fragile; handle carefully and store upright immediately after cutting.
  2. 2

    Securing the Work Space

    ≈ 10 min

Create a workspace where the 800mm high bookshelf can be assembled vertically. A ceiling height over 2200mm and floor area roughly 1500×1200mm provide enough room. Spread a blue sheet and use two saw horses to support long boards.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 2 / 20

    Tip

    • Assembly is done on the floor lying down; the bookshelf is stood up only at the final step. This method works even in small rooms.

    Watch out

    • Raising the finished bookshelf alone is difficult. Two people recommended for safety.
    • If ceiling height is under 2000mm, the bookshelf may hit the ceiling on standing. Check in advance.
  3. 3

Making a Cut List and Requesting Cuts

    ≈ 20 min

Submit a cut list to the home center: 2 side boards (800mm), 6 shelf boards (800mm), and 1 back board (800×800mm). If cutting yourself, support the 800mm boards on two saw horses and cut with a pull saw. Aim for cut tolerance within ±2mm.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 3 / 20

    Tip

    • Each cut costs about 30-50 yen. Having all cuts done costs ~1000 yen, reducing time from 30 minutes to immediate.
    • The 6 shelf boards are the same length; bundling them and cutting all at once provides the best accuracy.

    Watch out

    • 19mm thick SPF lumber warps easily, even with straight cuts. Use a guide to cut straight.
    • 4mm plywood is soft and deforms if not well supported underneath during cutting.
  4. 4

Sanding All Components (#120 to #240)

    ≈ 40 min

Sand all parts starting with #120 grit then finish with #240 grit. Pay special attention to the shelf board top and bottom surfaces, shelf support faces on side boards, and wood ends. Rounding shelf edges where hands touch improves usability. Clean wood dust completely with a vacuum after sanding.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 4 / 20

    Tip

    • Sanding shelf board surfaces to a smooth finish facilitates smooth handling of books.
    • Wood ends (cut surfaces) raise fibers easily; start sanding with #120 grit carefully.

    Watch out

    • SPF lumber is soft; excessive sanding can alter dimensions. Use #120 primarily, #240 only for finishing.
    • Over-rounding corners can make the piece look bulky; limit rounding radius to about 2mm.
  5. 5

Marking Shelf Positions on Side Boards

    ≈ 15 min

Place the two side boards together and mark shelf board positions for the 6 shelves with pencil. Space shelves with 300mm intervals from the bottom (total 1800mm) or customize spacing with wider upper decorative area. Mark both boards simultaneously aligned exactly.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 5 / 20

    Tip

    • Clamp the two side boards together before marking so shelf positions perfectly match on both sides.
    • Choose shelf spacing based on common book heights: A4 (297mm), A5 (210mm), and bunko size (150mm) for convenient storage.

    Watch out

    • If shelf positions differ on each side board, shelves will be installed crookedly. Simultaneous marking while clamped is essential.
    • If shelf thickness of 19mm is forgotten in spacing calculations, shelf heights become narrow in practice.
  6. 6

    Preparing Pilot Holes

    ≈ 20 min

Drill 3mm diameter pilot holes at the marked shelf positions. Drill from the outer side of the side board inward toward the shelf board edge, penetrating the side board (19mm) with 10mm depth into the shelf board (29mm total). Use masking tape on drill bit as a depth guide.

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 6 / 20

    Tip

    • 3mm pilot hole diameter corresponds to about 70% of 4.2mm screw shaft, reliably preventing wood splitting.
    • Each shelf requires 2 pilot holes per side board; 6 shelves × 4 holes = 24 holes total. Check to avoid omissions.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient pilot hole depth prevents screws from seating fully; drill slightly deeper for safety.
    • Over-penetrating the shelf board risks drill bit coming through opposite side; tape depth restrictor prevents this.
  7. 7

Temporary Fixing Shelf Boards to One Side Board

    ≈ 20 min

Lay one side board flat on the floor and stand the 6 shelf boards aligned with the marks. Temporarily fix with F-clamps. Check right angle between side board and shelf boards using carpenter's square; where square doesn't fit, visually confirm alignment.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 20

    Tip

    • Install shelf boards from bottom up for stable positioning.
    • Each shelf board ideally needs one clamp; six clamps speed work, but if only two available, fix sequentially.

    Watch out

    • Fixing with incorrect right angle results in skewed parallelogram structure. Always confirm with square.
    • Shelf boards protruding beyond side board edges prevent fitting the back board later.
  8. 8

    Screwing to One Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes from the outside of the side board into shelf board edges. Use 2 screws per shelf at each position, totaling 12 screws for 6 shelves. Screw heads should be flush or recessed about 0.5mm into side board. Use medium torque on impact driver and finish by tightening manually a quarter turn.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 8 / 20

    Tip

    • Screws offset slightly vertically improve pull-out resistance.
    • If screw head holes are visible, optional wood plugs can conceal them later.

    Watch out

    • Over-tightening screws can split 19mm SPF wood ends. Use medium torque stop.
    • If screws go in crooked and protrude inside, remove, fill with wood putty, and re-screw next to original hole.
  9. 9

Preparation for Attaching Opposite Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Stand the assembly fixed to one side board upright and position the second side board against shelf board ends. Align shelf board ends with previously marked lines on side board. Temporarily fix with clamps. Ensure the entire structure stands straight and check right angles.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 9 / 20

    Tip

    • Two-person operation recommended: one supporting assembly and one clamping ensures precision.
    • Markings for second side board were made initially; do not re-mark.

    Watch out

    • Attempting alone can cause shelf boards to fall off and hit the floor. Always work with two people or lean the piece safely against a wall.
  10. 10

    Screwing on Opposite Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes from the outside of the second side board into shelf boards (2 screws per shelf × 6 shelves = 12 screws). This completes securing the main bookshelf structure.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 10 / 20

    Tip

    • After securing both sides, check shelf boards with level; if any shelf is tilted, loosen screws and adjust.
    • Avoid screwing both sides simultaneously to prevent distortion; screw all shelves fully on one side before the other.

    Watch out

    • Simultaneous screwing on both sides causes warping.
  11. 11

Checking Overall Level and Diagonal Measurements

    ≈ 15 min

Place the assembled frame on the floor and check each shelf board with a level. From the front, measure diagonals (top-left to bottom-right and top-right to bottom-left) with a tape measure. Confirm the difference is within 5mm. If warped, loosen clamps, adjust, and retighten screws.

    Check level
    Level ✓
    LevelSTEP 11 / 20

    Tip

    • Diagonal difference over 5mm indicates parallelogram distortion. Correct before attaching back board.
    • Back board adds rigidity; correct distortion before installation.

    Watch out

    • Shelf boards sagging at center worsens under book weight. Shelf length about 600mm is acceptable; exceed 1000mm requires reinforcement consideration.
  12. 12

    Preparing to Attach Back Board

    ≈ 10 min

Place the 4mm plywood back board against the bookshelf back. Align all corners and confirm diagonals match the frame. Positioning the back board allows final correction of distortions. Temporarily fix with masking tape.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 12 / 20

    Tip

    • Back board is important for suppressing distortion; installing it slightly skewed reduces rigidity.
    • The 4mm plywood can be quickly fixed with a stapler; if using small nails, drill pilot holes first.

    Watch out

    • If back board is larger than frame, trim excess edges; if smaller, leave a uniform 5mm gap around.
  13. 13

    Stapling the Back Board

    ≈ 20 min

Fix the back board to side and shelf boards using a stapler (15mm staples) or small nails. Space fasteners every 100-150mm around edges and at shelf board positions. Start at corners and proceed diagonally to minimize distortion.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 13 / 20

    Tip

    • Stapler cost approx. 1500-2500 yen at home centers; faster than nails and worth the investment for bookshelf making.
    • Mark shelf positions on back board with pencil to avoid missing shelf board fastening.

    Watch out

    • Staples protruding inside can damage books; 15mm staples are suitable for 19mm thickness.
    • Failing to staple along back board edges and shelf positions causes back board to lift when shelving sags.
  14. 14

    Preparing to Attach L-Brackets

    ≈ 15 min

Attach four 50mm L-brackets to the upper back corners of the bookshelf (2 on each side). One side fixed to bookshelf top edge; the other side fixed to wall studs. Confirm stud positions on wall with a stud finder beforehand.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 14 / 20

    Tip

    • Cheap stud finders from 100 yen stores have low accuracy; home center models (1000-2000 yen) recommended.
    • Wall studs typically spaced at 455mm centers; after finding one stud, estimate neighboring stud positions easily.

    Watch out

    • Fixing to drywall only does not prevent tipping; always secure to studs.
    • If bracket positions don't align with studs, shift brackets left or right to center screws on the studs.
  15. 15

    Installing L-Brackets on Bookshelf Side

    ≈ 10 min

Attach the L-brackets to the outside upper parts of side boards using 38mm coarse-thread screws at bracket holes. Fix brackets flush or within 5mm of side board surface, so they protrude perpendicular for wall fixing.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 15 / 20

    Tip

    • Ensure bracket orientation has bent part facing wall and screw holes facing bookshelf.

    Watch out

    • Incorrectly angled brackets cause gaps between bracket and wall when mounting; check with a level.
  16. 16

Setting Up Bookshelf and Fixing to Wall

    ≈ 20 min

With two people, move the bookshelf to final location, placing it flush to the wall. Secure L-brackets to wall studs with 45-50mm coarse-thread screws (included or separate). Fix all four locations for full tipping prevention.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 16 / 20

    Tip

    • Wall screws 38mm are too short; use 45-50mm screws reaching studs.
    • Wall fixing is critical, preventing injury or death in earthquakes; do not neglect this step.

    Watch out

    • Drywall anchors alone lack strength; always screw into studs.
    • If a gap over 5mm exists between bookshelf and wall, insert shims before fixing; leaving a gap disables bracket effectiveness.
  17. 17

    Cleaning Before Finishing

    ≈ 10 min

Thoroughly vacuum and wipe the entire bookshelf to remove wood dust, oils, and fingerprints. Cleaning quality strongly affects finish result. Optionally, mask the plywood back board to prevent uneven stain absorption.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 17 / 20

    Tip

    • For perfect cleaning before finishing, wipe dry cloth, then wet, then dry again in that order.

    Watch out

    • Remaining wood dust causes rough texture in finish; check under lighting.
  18. 18

    Applying First Coat Oil Stain

    ≈ 40 min

Brush oil stain (such as Watco Oil or Kinura) fully on all surfaces in order: side board exterior, shelf board top, shelf board underside, then back board. After 10-15 minutes, wipe excess off with dry cloth. First coat absorbs most of the oil, approximately 60-70% of total amount.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 18 / 20

    Tip

    • Oil stain application: brush on, wait 10-15 minutes, then wipe off; leaving residue causes stickiness.
    • Brush width 30-50mm is optimal for bookshelf work; wider brushes don’t reach details.

    Watch out

    • Forgetting to wipe causes stickiness lasting over a week; always wipe off.
    • Plywood back board absorbs quickly causing uneven stain; apply thinly and wipe carefully.
  19. 19

    Second Coat Oil Stain

    ≈ 25 min

After drying first coat 24 hours, apply a second coat with about 1/3 to 1/2 of first coat amount. Also wipe off excess. Two coats deepen color and improve protection. Fully dry for 24-48 hours.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 19 / 20

    Tip

    • Second coat corrects uneven tones from first coat. Apply a thin, even layer overall.
    • Add a third coat if deeper color desired.

    Watch out

    • Forgetting to wipe off second coat also causes uneven finish.
    • Dry indoors to prevent dust and insect contamination while drying.
  20. 20

    Completion, Starting Use, and Inspection

    ≈ 15 min

After oil fully dries (48 hours), place books and start use. Distribute heavy books on lower shelves and light books higher for balance and stability. After one week of use, inspect screw tightness and L-bracket fastening, re-tightening if necessary.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 20 / 20

    Tip

    • Concentrate heavy books (encyclopedias etc.) on bottom two shelves; keep upper shelves light with paperback and standard books.
    • Re-oil every 3-5 years to refresh gloss and protection.

    Watch out

    • Placing books immediately after finishing can transfer oil stains to books. Allow at least 48 hours drying.
    • Books absorb moisture; in humid seasons use dehumidifiers. Moisture can cause bookshelf to warp.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
  • ⚠️When fixing to a wall, always locate the studs; do not fix to drywall alone.
