Build steps

  1. 1

Final Check of Parts and Tools

    ≈ 15 min

Gather 2 side boards of SPF lumber 1x10 (19×400×1700mm), 6 shelf boards (19×400×900mm), one 4mm plywood back board (900×1700mm), 40 coarse-thread screws 38mm, and 4 L-brackets 50mm. Tools include electric driver, saw, tape measure, carpenter's square, #120/#240 sandpaper, level, two F-clamps, brush and paint tray, tackers or finishing nails.

    Measure
    W 900 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 20

    Tip

    • SPF lumber tends to warp; visually inspect each piece at purchase and select boards with warp less than 1mm.
    • L-brackets and screws are essential for anti-tip safety. Do not omit them.

    Watch out

    • Check each SPF lumber piece for warping, splits, and knots before purchase; assembling boards warped over 1mm will cause shelf distortion.
    • 4mm plywood back board is thin and fragile; after cutting, store it vertically to avoid damage.
  2. 2

    Securing the Workspace

    ≈ 10 min

Ensure you have space to stand and work with the bookshelf (height 1700mm). A ceiling height of 2200mm or more and floor area about 1500×1200mm is ideal. Lay down a blue sheet and support long pieces with two saw horses.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 2 / 20

    Tip

    • Assembly is done laying the shelf down; upright only in the final steps, so even small rooms are manageable.

    Watch out

    • Standing the assembled bookshelf alone is difficult; work with two people for safety.
    • Ceiling heights below 2000mm may cause the bookshelf to hit the ceiling during standing up. Check beforehand.
  3. 3

Creating Cut List and Requesting Cuts

    ≈ 20 min

Submit a cut list for 2 side boards (1700mm), 6 shelf boards (900mm), and back board (900×1700mm) to the home center. If cutting yourself, support the long lumber (1700mm) on two saw horses and cut with a pulling motion. Aim for cut accuracy within ±2mm.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 3 / 20

    Tip

    • Cutting fees are 30-50 yen per cut. Full cutting service costs about 1000 yen but saves 30 minutes of time.
    • Bundle the 6 shelf boards and cut together for best accuracy.

    Watch out

    • SPF lumber 19mm thick warps easily, even in straight cuts; use guides for straight cuts.
    • 4mm plywood bends easily during cutting if not properly supported underneath.
  4. 4

Sanding All Components (#120 then #240)

    ≈ 40 min

Sand all components with #120 followed by #240 sandpaper. Pay extra attention to the shelf support surfaces on side boards, upper and lower surfaces of shelf boards, and wood edges. Rounding the shelf edges where hands touch improves usability. Vacuum to remove all sawdust after sanding.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 4 / 20

    Tip

    • A smooth shelf board surface allows smooth book handling.
    • Wood edges tend to have raised fibers; start sanding with #120 and be thorough.

    Watch out

    • SPF lumber is soft; excess sanding can alter dimensions. Use #120 mainly and #240 only for finishing.
    • Over-rounding edges (over R2mm) causes clumsy appearance. Keep edge rounding around R2mm.
  5. 5

Marking Shelf Positions on Side Boards

    ≈ 15 min

Lay the two side boards together and mark the fixed positions for 6 shelves with pencil. Typical shelf spacing is six 300mm intervals from the bottom (total 1800mm), or design with wider spaces near the top for display. Match the marks exactly on both boards.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 5 / 20

    Tip

    • Clamp the two side boards together before marking so shelf positions are identical on both.
    • Decide shelf spacing referencing A4 (297mm height), A5 (210mm), and Bunko (150mm) book sizes for easier storage.

    Watch out

    • If shelf positions differ between the two sides, shelves will be crooked; clamp and mark simultaneously.
    • Do not forget shelf board thickness of 19mm when calculating spacing; it reduces actual spacing.
  6. 6

    Drilling Pilot Holes

    ≈ 20 min

Drill 3mm diameter pilot holes at the marked positions. Holes are drilled from the outside of side boards through to the shelf board wood ends. Use masking tape on the drill to mark depth. Hole depth combines 19mm through side board plus 10mm into shelf board (total 29mm).

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 6 / 20

    Tip

    • 3mm pilot holes are 70% the diameter of the 4.2mm coarse-thread screw shaft, preventing wood splitting.
    • Each shelf requires 2 screws on each side (left and right), so 24 pilot holes total (6 shelves × 4 holes). Check carefully.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient pilot hole depth prevents screws from fully seating; drill slightly deeper for safety.
    • Drilling through too far and piercing the opposite side of the shelf board should be avoided by depth marking with tape.
  7. 7

Temporary Fixing Shelf Boards to One Side Board

    ≈ 20 min

Lay one side board flat on the floor, stand the 6 shelf boards vertically at the marked positions, and temporarily clamp using F-clamps. Confirm right angle between side board and shelf boards with a carpenter's square; where square does not fit, check visually.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 20

    Tip

    • Start fixing from the bottom shelf and proceed upward for stability.
    • Each shelf ideally gets one clamp; having 6 clamps speeds work but 2 clamps can be used progressively.

    Watch out

    • Fixing at wrong angles will distort into a parallelogram shape; always check right angles carefully.
    • Shelves should not protrude beyond the side board edge, or back board installation will be obstructed.
  8. 8

    Driving Screws on One Side

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes from the outside of the side board into shelf ends. Use two screws per shelf position on each of 6 shelves (total 12 screws). Screw heads should be flush or sunk 0.5mm into the side board. Use moderate torque on impact driver, finishing final 1/4 turn by hand.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 8 / 20

    Tip

    • Slight vertical offset of the two screws per position increases withdrawal strength.
    • If screw heads are visible, optional wooden dowels can be used after finishing to conceal holes.

    Watch out

    • Over-tightening screws may split 19mm thick SPF wood ends; stop at moderate torque.
    • If screws angle through to the opposite side and protrude, remove, fill with wood filler, and re-screw at a different position.
  9. 9

Preparation for Opposite Side Board Installation

    ≈ 15 min

Stand the assembly with one side fixed, then align the remaining side board’s marks with the opposite ends of shelf boards. Temporarily clamp in place. Confirm right angles while the assembly is upright.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 9 / 20

    Tip

    • Two-person operation is recommended: one supporting, one clamping for accuracy.
    • The opposite side board's marks should have been made previously; do not re-mark.

    Watch out

    • Attempting alone risks dropping shelves; always work with two people or lean assembly safely on a wall.
  10. 10

Driving Screws on the Opposite Side

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes on the other side board into shelf ends, two screws per shelf position, 6 shelves × 2 screws = 12 screws. Shelf boards and both side boards are now fixed, completing the main bookshelf structure.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 10 / 20

    Tip

    • After securing both sides, use a level to check each shelf is horizontal; if any tilt exists, loosen screws to adjust.
    • Do not drive screws on both sides simultaneously as this causes distortion; secure all screws on one side first, then the other.

    Watch out

    • Simultaneous screwing on both sides causes warping.
  11. 11

    Overall Leveling and Diagonal Check

    ≈ 15 min

Place the assembled unit on the floor. Check shelf levels with a level. Measure the diagonals (top left to bottom right and top right to bottom left) with a tape measure; difference should be within 5mm. If distorted, loosen clamps and adjust, then re-tighten screws.

    Check level
    Level ✓
    LevelSTEP 11 / 20

    Tip

    • Diagonal difference greater than 5mm indicates parallelogram distortion; correct before attaching back board.
    • The back board adds structural rigidity; correct distortions before attachment.

    Watch out

    • Shelf sagging (center sagging downward) worsens under books’ weight. With 600mm shelf length allowed; consider reinforcement for lengths over 1000mm.
  12. 12

    Preparing Back Board Attachment

    ≈ 10 min

Place the 4mm plywood back board against the bookshelf rear. Align corners and confirm diagonals match to correct distortions. Temporarily fix with masking tape.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 12 / 20

    Tip

    • Back board is essential for rigidity; improper angled attachment reduces strength.
    • 4mm plywood is easy to affix with a tacker; if using finishing nails, pre-drill pilot holes.

    Watch out

    • If back board is larger than bookshelf, trim excess. If smaller, leave an even gap of up to 5mm at edges.
  13. 13

Back Board Fixing with Tackers or Finishing Nails

    ≈ 20 min

Attach the back board to side and shelf boards using a tacker (with approx. 15mm staples) or finishing nails every 100-150mm around perimeter and at shelf locations. Start at corners and proceed diagonally to minimize distortion.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 13 / 20

    Tip

    • Tackers cost about 1500-2500 yen at hardware stores and speed installation compared to nails.
    • Mark shelf positions lightly on back board before fastening to avoid missing shelf attachment points.

    Watch out

    • Staples protruding inside will damage books; 15mm staples are suitable for 19mm thick wood.
    • Stapling only edges without shelf attachment points risks back board warping.
  14. 14

    Preparing L-Bracket Installation

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare four 50mm L-brackets to be installed on the upper rear left and right sides (two per side). One side attaches to bookshelf top edge, the other to the wall. Confirm wall stud locations with a stud finder beforehand.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 14 / 20

    Tip

    • Low-cost stud finders lack precision; higher-quality models (1000-2000 yen) from hardware stores are recommended.
    • Wall studs are typically spaced at 455mm; once you find one, the adjacent can be approximated.

    Watch out

    • Screwing into drywall only does not prevent tip-over; always fasten into studs.
    • If bracket position does not align with studs, adjust bracket horizontally to center screws in studs.
  15. 15

    Attaching L-Brackets to Bookshelf

    ≈ 10 min

Attach four L-brackets to bookshelf upper side board outer surfaces with coarse-thread screws 38mm through the bracket holes. Fix brackets flush or with up to 5mm gap to the side board, protruding perpendicularly outward for wall fixing.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 15 / 20

    Tip

    • Make sure bracket bend side faces wall, and screw hole side faces bookshelf.
    • Ensure brackets are level to avoid gaps between bracket and wall upon fixing.

    Watch out

    • Improperly leveled brackets create gaps during wall fixing, reducing effectiveness.
  16. 16

Setting Up the Bookshelf and Wall Attachment

    ≈ 20 min

Carry the bookshelf into place standing upright (recommended two people). Press it flush to the wall, screw coarse-thread screws 45-50mm (included or separately purchased) through bracket holes into studs at 4 points to secure and prevent tipping.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 16 / 20

    Tip

    • Wall screws should be 45-50mm to reach studs; 38mm screws are too short.
    • Wall fixing is the most important safety step to prevent injury or fatality in earthquakes; do not neglect.

    Watch out

    • Drywall anchors alone are insufficient strength; always screw into studs.
    • If more than 5mm gap exists between bookshelf and wall, insert shims to eliminate it before securing, or bracket effectiveness reduces.
  17. 17

    Pre-Painting Cleaning

    ≈ 10 min

Clean the entire bookshelf with a vacuum cleaner and dry cloth to remove all sawdust, oils, and fingerprints. Cleaning quality greatly affects final finish. Optionally mask the plywood back board before painting as it absorbs paint quickly.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 17 / 20

    Tip

    • Clean with three steps: dry wipe, wet wipe, dry wipe for best cleaning.

    Watch out

    • Remaining sawdust causes rough painted surfaces; check with lighting.
  18. 18

    First Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 40 min

Apply oil stain (e.g., Watco Oil, Kinura) with brush over entire bookshelf starting with side board outer surfaces, then shelf tops, shelf undersides, and the back board. After 10-15 minutes, wipe off excess with a dry cloth. The first coat uses 60-70% of total paint volume due to absorption.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 18 / 20

    Tip

    • Oil stain application is brush on → wait 10-15 min → wipe off excess. Do not skip wiping or stickiness remains.
    • Brush width about 30-50mm is ideal for bookshelf work; too large misses details.

    Watch out

    • Forgetting to wipe leaves stickiness for over a week; always wipe.
    • Plywood back board absorbs quickly and unevenly; apply thin coats and wipe carefully.
  19. 19

    Second Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 25 min

After 24 hours drying of the first coat, apply a second coat using roughly 1/3 to 1/2 the first coat volume. Wipe off excess similarly. Two coats deepen color and improve protection. Allow 24-48 hours for full drying.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 19 / 20

    Tip

    • The second coat corrects color unevenness from the first coat.
    • Add a third coat if deeper color is desired.

    Watch out

    • Do not skip wiping off excess on second coat; thick coats cause uneven finish.
    • During drying, keep indoors free of dust and insects.
  20. 20

    Completion, Usage, and Inspection

    ≈ 15 min

After full oil drying (48 hours), place books and begin use. Store heavier books on lower shelves and lighter ones on upper shelves to maintain balance and stability. Check screw tightness and L-bracket fixation after one week and retighten as needed.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 20 / 20

    Tip

    • Concentrate heavy books (encyclopedias etc.) on the bottom two shelves.
    • Reapply oil finish every 3-5 years to renew gloss and protection.

    Watch out

    • Do not load books immediately after completion as oil may transfer; dry at least 48 hours.
    • Books absorb moisture; use dehumidifiers during rainy seasons; shelf may warp due to moisture.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
  • ⚠️When securing to the wall, always locate wall studs (do not fix only to drywall).
