Build steps

  1. 1

Final Check of Materials and Tools

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare 2 pieces of side boards made of SPF lumber 1x10 (19×350×1600mm), 6 shelf boards (19×350×600mm), 1 back panel of 4mm plywood (600×1600mm), 40 coarse-thread screws 38mm, and 4 L-brackets 50mm. The tools needed are an electric driver, saw, measuring tape, carpenter's square, #120/#240 sandpaper, level, two F-clamps, brush and paint tray, and a stapler or small nails.

    Measure
    W 600 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 20

    Tip

    • SPF lumber tends to warp. Check each piece visually when purchasing; select pieces with warp under 1mm.
    • L-brackets and screws are the lifeline for 'tipping prevention'. Never omit them.

    Watch out

    • Check each SPF lumber piece individually for warping, cracking, and knots before purchase. Using lumber warped over 1mm causes shelf boards to distort.
    • 4mm thick plywood back panel is thin and prone to breaking when moved. After cutting, immediately stand it upright for storage.
  2. 2

    Securing the Work Space

    ≈ 10 min

Secure a workspace where the 1600mm tall bookshelf can be assembled. A ceiling height over 2200mm and floor space about 1500×1200mm is sufficient. Lay a blue sheet and use two sawhorses to support long pieces.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 2 / 20

    Tip

    • Assembly is done lying on the floor; the bookshelf is stood up at the final step. Assembly is possible even in small rooms.

    Watch out

    • Standing the assembled bookshelf upright alone is difficult. Two-person work is safer.
    • If ceiling height is under 2000mm, the bookshelf may hit the ceiling when stood up. Check in advance.
  3. 3

Creating Cut List and Requesting Cuts

    ≈ 20 min

Submit a cut list for 2 side boards (1600mm), 6 shelf boards (600mm), and 1 back panel (600×1600mm) to the home center. If cutting yourself, support the long lumber (1600mm) on two sawhorses and make straight cuts. Aim for cutting tolerance within ±2mm.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 3 / 20

    Tip

    • Cutting cost is about 30-50 yen per cut. Having all cuts done costs about 1000 yen and saves time from 30 minutes to instantaneous.
    • Bundle the 6 shelf boards and cut them at once for best accuracy.

    Watch out

    • Even with straight cuts, 19mm thick SPF lumber tends to warp. Use guides for straight cuts.
    • 4mm plywood is soft; support it from below during cutting to prevent distortion from bending.
  4. 4

Sanding All Materials (#120 then #240)

    ≈ 40 min

Sand all materials first with #120 then #240 sandpaper. Pay special attention to the shelf support surfaces on side boards, top and bottom of shelf boards, and the edges (cut ends). Rounding off shelf edges makes the bookshelf easier to handle. After sanding, vacuum all wood dust thoroughly.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 4 / 20

    Tip

    • Sanding shelf board surfaces to a smooth feel helps smooth book insertion and removal.
    • Edges tend to have raised fibers after cutting; sand these carefully beginning with #120.

    Watch out

    • SPF lumber is soft; sanding too much alters dimensions. Use #120 mainly; #240 only for finishing.
    • Rounding edges excessively looks clumsy; keep radius about 2mm.
  5. 5

Marking Shelf Positions on Side Boards

    ≈ 15 min

Lay the two side boards side by side and mark with pencil the positions for fixing the six shelves. Shelf spacing can be six 300mm intervals from the bottom (total 1800mm) or a wider gap at the top for decoration per your design. Clamp the two side boards together and mark simultaneously so shelf positions exactly match.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 5 / 20

    Tip

    • Clamping the two side boards before marking ensures shelf positions are perfectly aligned on both sides.
    • Use standard dimensions such as A4 (297mm height), A5 (210mm), and bunko size (150mm) as references to decide shelf spacing for ease of storage.

    Watch out

    • If shelf positions are misaligned left and right, the shelf boards will be crooked. Mark both boards simultaneously clamped.
    • Forgeting shelf board thickness of 19mm in spacing calculations will result in narrower spacing in reality.
  6. 6

    Preparing Pilot Holes

    ≈ 20 min

Drill φ3mm pilot holes at the marked positions. Drill from the outside face of the side boards towards the shelf boards so the hole penetrates from outside in. Use masking tape on the drill bit to mark depth; drill through the side board thickness (19mm) plus 10mm into the shelf board (total 29mm).

    Drill a hole
    φ3mm
    DrillSTEP 6 / 20

    Tip

    • φ3mm pilot hole diameter is about 70% of the coarse-thread screw's 4.2mm shaft to reliably prevent splitting.
    • For each shelf board, drill two pilot holes from each side board (2 sides × 6 shelves × 2 screws = 24 holes). Ensure no holes are missed.

    Watch out

    • If pilot holes are too shallow, screws will not fully embed. Drill slightly deeper than needed for safety.
    • Avoid drilling through the shelf board’s opposite side by using tape as depth stop on the drill bit.
  7. 7

Temporarily Fixing Shelf Boards to One Side Board

    ≈ 20 min

Place one side board flat on the floor and stand the six shelf boards on it aligned with the position marks. Use F-clamps to temporarily fix them. Check with a carpenter's square that each shelf is perpendicular to the side board. Where the square cannot fit, visually confirm the right angle.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 20

    Tip

    • Set shelves from bottom to top sequentially for better stability.
    • Ideally, one clamp per shelf board is used (6 clamps). If unavailable, use two clamps and fix sequentially.

    Watch out

    • If shelves are fixed crooked, the whole assembly will be a parallelogram. Always verify right angles with a carpenter's square.
    • If shelf boards protrude beyond the side board edges, back panel installation will be blocked.
  8. 8

    Screwing in One Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Drive coarse-thread screws 38mm through the pilot holes from the outside of the side board into the shelf board ends. Two screws per location (slightly offset vertically) for all 6 shelves (12 screws total). Screw heads should be flush with or sunk 0.5mm below the side board surface. Use medium torque on the impact driver; finish tightening by hand for about one-quarter turn.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 8 / 20

    Tip

    • Offsetting the two screws slightly up and down improves pull-out strength.
    • If screw heads are noticeable, they can be optionally filled later with wooden dowels.

    Watch out

    • Over-tightening can split the 19mm thick SPF lumber ends. Use medium torque setting.
    • If screws go in at an angle and protrude the opposite side, remove and fill with wood filler, then re-screw in a different position.
  9. 9

Preparing to Attach Opposite Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Stand the assembly with one side board and fixed shelves upright. Position the other side board against the opposite shelf ends aligning with the marked positions and temporarily fix with clamps. Confirm perpendicularity while the assembly is upright.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 9 / 20

    Tip

    • This step is recommended for two people: one to hold the shelves, one to clamp for accuracy.
    • The other side board’s marks are already made; no need to remark.

    Watch out

    • Attempting this alone can cause shelves to fall off to the floor. Always use two people or lean the unit against a wall for support.
  10. 10

    Screwing the Opposite Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

From the outside of the opposite side board, screw coarse-thread screws 38mm into the opposite shelf ends through pilot holes. Two screws per shelf × 6 shelves = 12 screws. This completes fixing of both side boards and all shelves, finishing the main bookshelf structure.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 10 / 20

    Tip

    • After fixing both sides, check each shelf’s level with a level. If any shelf is slanted, loosen screws, adjust, and re-tighten.

    Watch out

    • Screwing both sides simultaneously causes distortion. Fix all screws on one side first, then the other.
  11. 11

    Overall Level and Diagonal Check

    ≈ 15 min

Place the assembled unit on the floor and check all shelves are level with a level tool. Measure the diagonals from top left to bottom right and top right to bottom left with a measuring tape; the difference should be within 5mm. If distorted, loosen clamps, adjust, and add screws to fix.

    Check level
    Level ✓
    LevelSTEP 11 / 20

    Tip

    • A diagonal difference over 5mm indicates a parallelogram. Correct this before attaching the back panel.
    • Back panel attachment increases rigidity; correct any distortion before this step.

    Watch out

    • Shelf sagging (center sagging) worsens with book weight. With 600mm shelf length, this is acceptable; for over 1000mm, consider reinforcement.
  12. 12

    Preparing to Attach Back Panel

    ≈ 10 min

Place the 4mm plywood back panel (600×1600mm) flush to the rear of the bookshelf. Align corners and confirm diagonal measurements match the main unit, allowing final distortion correction by back panel attachment. When positioned, lightly temporarily fix with masking tape.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 12 / 20

    Tip

    • The back panel is key for preventing frame distortion. Attaching slightly skewed reduces rigidity.
    • 4mm plywood can be easily fixed with a stapler; if using small nails, drill pilot holes first.

    Watch out

    • If the back panel is larger than the unit, trim the excess. If smaller, leave uniform gaps of up to 5mm around the edges.
  13. 13

    Stapling the Back Panel

    ≈ 20 min

Fasten the back panel to side and shelf boards with a stapler (15mm staples) or small nails at intervals of 100-150mm, including all edges and at shelf positions. Start stapling from the corners and proceed along diagonals to prevent warping.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 13 / 20

    Tip

    • Staplers cost around 1500-2500 yen at home centers and are faster than nails, making them worthwhile for bookshelf assembly.
    • Mark shelf positions on the back panel with pencil before stapling to avoid missing fixing at shelf locations.

    Watch out

    • Staples that go through the inside of the unit can damage books. 15mm staple length is appropriate for 19mm thick material.
    • If staples are only on the 4 edges and not at shelf positions, the panel may detach when bowed.
  14. 14

    Preparing to Attach L-Brackets

    ≈ 15 min

Attach four 50mm L-brackets, two each on left and right at the bookshelf’s upper back. One side goes on the bookshelf top edge, the other attaches to the wall. Locate wall studs using a stud finder ahead of time to plan bracket positioning.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 14 / 20

    Tip

    • Inexpensive stud finders may lack accuracy; home center models costing 1000-2000 yen are recommended.
    • Studs are typically spaced 455mm apart; locating one helps estimate neighboring stud positions.

    Watch out

    • Fixing L-brackets only to gypsum board will not prevent tipping. Always fix into studs.
    • If L-bracket position does not align with studs, adjust bracket side-to-side so screws fit the stud center.
  15. 15

    Attaching L-Brackets to Bookshelf

    ≈ 10 min

Attach the four L-brackets on the bookshelf side boards at the upper back, fastened with coarse-thread screws 38mm through the bracket holes. Fix brackets flush or with less than 5mm gap to the side boards, so they protrude perpendicularly to the wall.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 15 / 20

    Tip

    • Ensure bracket orientation so the bend faces the wall, and screw holes face the bookshelf side board.

    Watch out

    • If brackets are attached crookedly, gaps form between bracket and wall when fixing. Check level during attachment.
  16. 16

Placing Bookshelf and Fixing to Wall

    ≈ 20 min

With two persons, carry and erect the bookshelf at the installation site. Press close to the wall and screw coarse-thread screws 45-50mm (included or separate) through the L-brackets into the studs from the wall side holes. Secure all four locations firmly to complete tipping prevention.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 16 / 20

    Tip

    • Wall screws must be longer than 38mm to reach studs (45-50mm recommended).
    • Wall fixing is critical; neglect may cause injury or death in earthquakes.

    Watch out

    • Drywall anchors alone lack sufficient strength; always screw into studs.
    • If gap between wall and bookshelf exceeds 5mm, insert shims before fixing; floating brackets are ineffective.
  17. 17

    Cleaning Before Painting

    ≈ 10 min

Vacuum and wipe the entire bookshelf with a dry cloth to fully remove wood dust, oils, and fingerprints. Cleaning quality greatly affects finish. Optionally, mask the plywood back panel beforehand as it absorbs finish quickly.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 17 / 20

    Tip

    • Wiping before finishing ideally follows 'dry wipe → damp wipe → dry wipe' sequence for perfection.

    Watch out

    • Residual wood dust causes rough paint surfaces; inspect under lighting.
  18. 18

    First Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 40 min

Apply oil stain (e.g., Watco Oil or Kinura) with a brush over entire surface: outside of side boards, shelf board tops, shelf board undersides, then back panel. After 10-15 minutes, wipe off excess with a dry cloth. Use about 60-70% of total stain volume for the first coat due to absorption.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 18 / 20

    Tip

    • Oil stain application should be followed by 10-15 minute wait, then wiping off excess to avoid tackiness.
    • Brush width of 30-50mm is optimal; larger brushes miss finer details.

    Watch out

    • Forgeting to wipe excess leaves a sticky surface for over a week.
    • Plywood back panel absorbs quickly causing uneven finish; apply thinly and wipe carefully.
  19. 19

    Second Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 25 min

After 24 hours drying from first coat, apply a second coat with about one-third to one-half the volume of the first coat. Wipe off excess again. Two coats deepen color and increase protection. Allow 24-48 hours for full drying.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 19 / 20

    Tip

    • Second coat corrects color unevenness from first coat; apply thin and even.
    • Add third coat if a deeper color is desired.

    Watch out

    • Do not skip wiping excess on second coat; thick layers cause uneven finish.
    • Keep drying coats indoors to prevent dust and insects adhering.
  20. 20

    Completion, Use, and Inspection

    ≈ 15 min

After full oil drying for 48 hours, load books and begin use. Place heavy books on lower shelves and lighter ones on upper shelves for balance and stability. After one week, re-check and tighten screws and L-brackets if needed.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 20 / 20

    Tip

    • Concentrate heavy books (encyclopedias etc.) on the bottom two shelves; keep light books like paperbacks on top.
    • Reapply oil every 3-5 years to restore shine and protection.

    Watch out

    • Placing books before 48-hour drying may transfer oil stains.
    • Because books absorb moisture, use dehumidifiers during rainy seasons to prevent bookshelf warping due to moisture.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before screwing to prevent wood splitting.
  • ⚠️When fixing to the wall, always locate studs (do not fix solely to gypsum board).
