Build steps

  1. 1

Final Check of Parts and Tools

    ≈ 15 min

Gather 2 side boards of SPF lumber 1x10 (19×350×1200 mm), 6 shelf boards (19×350×700 mm), one 4mm plywood back panel (700×1200 mm), 32 pieces of 38mm coarse-thread screws, and 4 L-shaped brackets (50 mm). Prepare tools: electric driver, saw, tape measure, carpenter's square, #120 and #240 sandpaper, level, two F clamps, brush and paint tray, stapler or fine nails.

    Measure
    W 700 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 20

    Tip

    • SPF lumber tends to warp. Inspect each board visually when purchasing, choosing those with warping under 1mm.
    • L-shaped brackets and screws are the lifeline to prevent tipping. Do not omit under any circumstance.

    Watch out

    • Check each SPF board individually for warping, cracking, and knots before purchase. Using boards warped over 1mm causes warped shelves.
    • The 4mm plywood back panel is thin and easily breaks during handling. Manage it upright immediately after cutting.
  2. 2

    Secure Workspace

    ≈ 10 min

Secure a workspace where you can stand the bookshelf (1200 mm tall) and work. Require ceiling height of at least 2200 mm and floor space about 1500×1200 mm. Lay blue tarp and support long boards on two sawhorses.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 2 / 20

    Tip

    • Assembly is done lying on the floor; standing up is the final step. Possible even in small rooms.

    Watch out

    • It's hard to stand the assembled bookshelf alone; two people are safer.
    • If ceiling height is below 2000 mm, the bookshelf may hit the ceiling when standing. Check beforehand.
  3. 3

Create Cut List and Request Cutting

    ≈ 20 min

Submit cut list: 2 side boards (1200mm), 6 shelf boards (700mm), 1 back panel (700×1200mm) to the home center. If cutting yourself, support long boards (1200mm) on two sawhorses and cut with push saw. Aim for cutting tolerance within ±2mm.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 3 / 20

    Tip

    • Cutting fee is about 30–50 yen per cut; total around 1000 yen for all cuts, saving 30 minutes time instantly.
    • Since the 6 shelf boards share the same length, bundling them to cut at once gives highest accuracy.

    Watch out

    • Even straight cuts on 19mm thick SPF warp easily; use a guide for straight cuts.
    • 4mm plywood is soft and bends if unsupported underneath during cutting.
  4. 4

Sand All Parts (#120 to #240)

    ≈ 40 min

Sand all parts starting with #120 grit and finishing with #240 grit. Pay special attention to the shelf support surfaces on the side boards, top and bottom surfaces of shelf boards, and the cut ends. Round off shelf edges to make handling easier. Vacuum thoroughly to remove wood dust after sanding.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 4 / 20

    Tip

    • Smooth shelf surfaces allow books to slide in and out easily.
    • Cut ends (wood fibers) rise and require careful sanding starting from #120 grit.

    Watch out

    • SPF is soft; sanding too much alters dimensions. Use #120 grit mainly; #240 is for finishing only.
    • Rounding edges excessively results in an ungainly look; keep radius about 2 mm.
  5. 5

Mark Shelf Positions on Side Boards

    ≈ 15 min

Place the two side boards together and mark shelf positions in pencil for six shelf levels. Intervals can be six 300 mm spaces from bottom (total 1800 mm) or adjusted for decorative wider spaces on top. Clamp side boards together and mark simultaneously to ensure identical shelf positions on both sides.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 5 / 20

    Tip

    • Clamp the two side boards before marking so shelf positions perfectly align on both sides.
    • Use standard book heights A4 (297 mm), A5 (210 mm), and paperback (150 mm) as references for shelf intervals.

    Watch out

    • If shelf positions differ side-to-side, shelves will be installed crookedly. Marking simultaneously is essential.
    • Forgetting to account for 19 mm shelf thickness causes actual intervals to be narrower than planned.
  6. 6

    Prepare Pilot Holes

    ≈ 20 min

Drill Ø3 mm pilot holes at marked positions. Drill from the outside face of the side boards towards the cut ends of the shelf boards. Use masking tape as a depth stop: drill through the 19 mm side board plus 10 mm into the shelf board shaft (total 29 mm depth).

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 6 / 20

    Tip

    • Ø3 mm pilot holes correspond to 70% of the 4.2 mm core diameter of 38 mm coarse-thread screws, reliably preventing splitting.
    • For each shelf board, drill four pilot holes in total (two per side board) — 6 shelves × 4 holes = 24 holes. Check none are missed.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient hole depth prevents screws from being fully driven. Drill slightly deeper than needed for safety.
    • Prevent drilling entirely through the opposite shelf side by using tape to limit depth.
  7. 7

Temporarily Fix Shelves to One Side Board

    ≈ 20 min

Lay one side board flat and stand the 6 shelf boards at marked positions. Temporarily clamp with F clamps and confirm right angles between side board and shelves using carpenter's square. Visual inspection is used where square can't fit.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 20

    Tip

    • Install shelves starting from bottom up for stability.
    • Ideally use one clamp per shelf board; having six clamps eases work but use two clamps sequentially if needed.

    Watch out

    • Fixing at incorrect angle results in parallelogram distortion. Always verify with carpenter's square.
    • If shelves extend beyond side board edges, back panel installation will be obstructed.
  8. 8

    Screw One Side Fixed Shelves

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38 mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes from side board outside into shelf board edges: two screws per shelf per location, totaling 12 screws for six levels. Screw heads should be flush or recessed up to 0.5 mm in the side boards. Use medium torque on impact driver, final tightening by hand about one-quarter turn.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 8 / 20

    Tip

    • Offset the two screws slightly vertically for better withdrawal resistance.
    • If screw heads are conspicuous, holes can be filled with wooden dowels later (optional).

    Watch out

    • Over-tightening may split 19 mm thick SPF cut ends; limit torque to medium.
    • If screws go in crookedly and protrude through opposite side, remove, fill with wood filler, and re-screw at different spot.
  9. 9

Prepare to Attach Opposite Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Stand the assembly with shelves fixed on one side and align the other side board onto the shelf ends and marked lines. Temporarily clamp in position. Confirm the entire assembly is upright and right angles are accurate.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 9 / 20

    Tip

    • This step is recommended for two people: one supports while the other clamps, ensuring precision.
    • The second side board's markings were done initially; no re-marking needed.

    Watch out

    • Working alone risks shelves dropping and damaging the floor. Use two people or support the unit against the wall during this step.
  10. 10

    Screw Opposite Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

From the opposite side board’s outside, drive 38 mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes, two screws per shelf × six levels = 12 screws. This completes the main structural fixation of the bookshelf assembling side boards and six shelves.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 10 / 20

    Tip

    • After securing both sides, check level of each shelf with a level. If any shelf tilts, loosen screws and adjust as needed.

    Watch out

    • Driving screws simultaneously on both sides can cause distortion. Complete all screws on one side before the opposite side.
  11. 11

Check Overall Level and Diagonal Measurements

    ≈ 15 min

Place the assembled unit on the floor and check each shelf level with a level. Measure diagonal distances (top-left to bottom-right and top-right to bottom-left) with tape measure; differences should be within 5 mm. If distorted, loosen clamps and adjust, then add screws to secure.

    Check level
    Level ✓
    LevelSTEP 11 / 20

    Tip

    • Diagonal differences over 5 mm indicate a parallelogram shape. Correct before attaching back panel.
    • Back panels enhance rigidity. Correct any distortions beforehand.

    Watch out

    • Shelf sagging (center droop) worsens with heavy books. Shelf length 600 mm is acceptable; lengths over 1000 mm should consider reinforcement.
  12. 12

    Prepare to Attach Back Panel

    ≈ 10 min

Place the 4mm plywood back panel (700×1200 mm) against the bookshelf rear aligning corners and confirming back panel diagonals match the unit’s diagonals (back panel positioning can correct final frame distortion). Once positioned, temporarily fix with masking tape.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 12 / 20

    Tip

    • Back panel is a key component suppressing distortion. Installing it slightly crooked reduces rigidity.
    • 4mm plywood is easily attached using a stapler; if using fine nails, pilot holes in advance recommended.

    Watch out

    • If back panel is larger than frame, trim protruding parts. If smaller, evenly maintain a 5 mm or less gap around edges.
  13. 13

    Attach Back Panel with Stapler

    ≈ 20 min

Use a stapler (approx. 15 mm staples) or fine nails to fasten the back panel to side boards and shelves. Space staples/nails at 100–150 mm intervals all around perimeter and along shelf positions. Start fastening from corners, then proceed along diagonal lines to minimize distortion.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 13 / 20

    Tip

    • Staplers cost around 1500–2500 yen at home centers and install faster than nails, worthwhile for bookshelf making.
    • Mark shelf positions on back panel with pencil before attaching to avoid missing shelves.

    Watch out

    • Staples protruding inside damage books; 15 mm staple length is appropriate for 19 mm thick lumber.
    • Secure both perimeter and shelf line staples to avoid back panel lifting when sagging occurs.
  14. 14

    Prepare L-shaped Bracket Installation

    ≈ 15 min

Install four 50 mm L-shaped brackets on the upper rear of bookshelf: two each left and right. Position one side mounted to bookshelf top edge, the other side for wall fixation. Confirm wall stud locations beforehand with a stud sensor.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 14 / 20

    Tip

    • Cheap stud sensors from 100 yen stores are less accurate; home center models (1000–2000 yen) are recommended.
    • Studs are commonly spaced at 455 mm. After finding one, estimating neighbors is easier.

    Watch out

    • If fixed only to drywall, screws won’t hold and tipping protection fails. Always fix to studs.
    • If bracket position does not align with studs, shift bracket laterally to center screws on studs.
  15. 15

    Attach L-shaped Brackets to Bookshelf

    ≈ 10 min

Attach four L-shaped brackets to bookshelf upper side board outsiders. Drive 38 mm coarse-thread screws through bracket screw holes. Mount brackets flush or within 5 mm from side boards, ensuring brackets protrude perpendicularly from wall mounting surface.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 15 / 20

    Tip

    • Install brackets so the bent part faces the wall side, and screw holes face the bookshelf side.

    Watch out

    • Installing brackets crookedly causes gaps between bracket and wall during fixing. Check with a level for accuracy.
  16. 16

Set Up Bookshelf and Fix to Wall

    ≈ 20 min

Carry and stand the bookshelf at desired location (two-person job recommended). Position tightly against the wall, then drive 45–50 mm coarse-thread screws through wall-side holes of L-shaped brackets into wall studs using appropriate screws (included or separate). Fix all four points to complete tipping prevention.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 16 / 20

    Tip

    • Screws shorter than 38 mm for wall side are insufficient; use 45–50 mm to reach studs.
    • Wall fixing is critical: skipping endangers against injuries or suffocation during earthquakes.

    Watch out

    • Drywall anchors alone are not strong enough; always screw into studs.
    • If a gap over 5 mm exists between wall and bookshelf, insert shims before fixing; otherwise brackets won’t hold.
  17. 17

    Clean Before Painting

    ≈ 10 min

Vacuum and wipe the entire bookshelf with a dry cloth to completely remove wood dust, oils, and fingerprints. Quality cleaning before painting greatly impacts finish quality. Optionally, mask plywood back panel before application because it absorbs paint quickly.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 17 / 20

    Tip

    • Wipe with dry cloth, then damp cloth, then dry cloth again (dry-damp-dry) for perfect cleaning before painting.

    Watch out

    • Remaining wood dust causes rough paint surfaces; inspect under bright light.
  18. 18

    First Oil Stain Application

    ≈ 40 min

Apply oil stain (e.g., Watco Oil, Kinura) to all surfaces using a brush. Apply in the sequence: side board exterior, shelf board top surfaces, shelf board interiors, then back panel. After 10–15 minutes, wipe off excess with a dry cloth. Use about 60–70% of total oil amount, as first coat absorbs a lot.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 18 / 20

    Tip

    • The process is brush on, wait 10–15 minutes, then wipe off; leaving excess causes long-lasting stickiness.
    • Brush width of 30–50 mm is ideal; wider brushes miss small areas.

    Watch out

    • Forgetting to wipe results in sticky surfaces for over a week. Always wipe off.
    • Plywood back panels absorb quickly and can cause blotches; apply thinly and wipe thoroughly.
  19. 19

    Second Oil Stain Application

    ≈ 25 min

After 24-hour drying of first coat, apply a second coat using one-third to one-half the amount of the first. Wipe off excess again. Two coats deepen color and enhance protection. Fully dry for 24–48 hours after second coat.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 19 / 20

    Tip

    • Second coat corrects color irregularities from first. Apply thinly and evenly.
    • Add a third coat if a deeper color is desired.

    Watch out

    • Do not forget wiping off on second coat or thick application causes blotchiness.
    • During drying, keep indoor to avoid dust and insects attaching.
  20. 20

    Completion, Use Start, and Check

    ≈ 15 min

After 48 hours drying completion, place books and start using. Place heavy books on bottom shelves and lighter books on upper shelves for balance and stability. One week after use start, re-inspect screws and L-shaped bracket fixings and tighten as needed.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 20 / 20

    Tip

    • Concentrate heavy books like encyclopedias on bottom two shelves; use paperbacks and regular books on upper shelves to reduce weight.
    • Re-oil every 3–5 years to restore gloss and protection.

    Watch out

    • Placing books immediately after finishing risks oil transferring onto books. Always allow at least 48 hours drying.
    • Books absorb moisture so use dehumidifier during rainy season; moisture causes bookshelf warping.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
  • ⚠️When fixing to the wall, always locate the studs (fixing to drywall alone is not allowed).
