Build steps

  1. 1

Final check of parts and tools

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare 2 side boards (SPF lumber 1x10, 19×300×500mm), 6 shelf boards (19×300×600mm), 1 back panel (4mm plywood 600×500mm), 16 coarse-thread screws 38mm, and 4 L-shaped brackets 50mm. Tools include electric screwdriver, saw, tape measure, carpenter's square, #120/#240 sandpaper, level, 2 F-clamps, brush and paint tray, stapler or small nails.

    Measure
    W 600 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 20

    Tip

    • SPF lumber tends to warp. Inspect each board visually and select ones with warping within 1mm.
    • L-shaped brackets and screws are critical for anti-tip safety. Do not omit them.

    Watch out

    • Check each SPF board for warping, cracks, and knots before purchase. Using boards warped over 1mm causes shelf boards to be crooked.
    • The 4mm plywood back panel is thin and fragile; after cutting, store it upright to prevent breaking.
  2. 2

    Securing workspace

    ≈ 10 min

Set up a workspace where you can stand a 500mm high bookshelf to work. Ceiling height should be 2200mm or more, floor area about 1500×1200mm for comfort. Lay blue sheet and support long materials with two sawhorses.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 2 / 20

    Tip

    • Assemble lying on the floor and stand up in the final step; can be done even in small rooms.

    Watch out

    • Standing up the assembled bookshelf alone is difficult. Two people are recommended for safety.
    • If ceiling height is less than 2000mm, the bookshelf may hit ceiling when standing up. Check in advance.
  3. 3

Create cut list and request cutting

    ≈ 20 min

Submit cut list to home center for 2 side boards (500mm), 6 shelf boards (600mm), 1 back panel (600×500mm). If cutting yourself, support long boards with two sawhorses and crosscut carefully. Aim for cut tolerance of ±2mm.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 3 / 20

    Tip

    • Cutting cost is 30-50 yen per cut. Total cost about 1000 yen for all cuts, time reduced from 30 minutes to immediate.
    • Bundle the 6 shelf boards together for one cut to ensure accuracy.

    Watch out

    • SPF lumber 19mm thick warps easily even when straight cut. Use guide to cut straight.
    • 4mm plywood is soft and will warp if not supported from below when cutting.
  4. 4

    Sanding all parts (#120 → #240)

    ≈ 40 min

Sand all parts starting with #120 grit then finish with #240 grit. Pay special attention to the shelf support faces on side boards, top and bottom surfaces of shelf boards, and end grain. Round sharp shelf edges slightly for easier handling. Vacuum wood dust completely after sanding.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 4 / 20

    Tip

    • Smooth shelf board surfaces make inserting and removing books easier.
    • End grain tends to roughen; start sanding with #120 grit for these areas.

    Watch out

    • SPF lumber is soft. Avoid excessive sanding to prevent dimensional errors. Use #120 for general sanding and #240 only for finishing.
    • Over-rounding corners looks awkward; keep around 2mm radius.
  5. 5

Mark shelf positions on side boards

    ≈ 15 min

Lay 2 side boards side by side and mark shelf positions for 6 shelves with pencil. Shelf spacing can be 300mm each from bottom up (total 1800mm) or adjusted for decorative spacing at top. Clamp the 2 side boards together and mark simultaneously to ensure identical positions.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 5 / 20

    Tip

    • Clamp side boards together before marking to align shelf positions perfectly.
    • Use sizes like A4 (297mm), A5 (210mm), and bunko (150mm) as references for shelf spacing, making storage easier.

    Watch out

    • Mismatched shelf positions cause shelves to be slanted. Simultaneous marking is essential.
    • If you forget to account for the 19mm thickness of shelf boards in spacing calculations, actual clearances will be narrower than planned.
  6. 6

    Prepare pilot holes

    ≈ 20 min

Drill 3mm diameter pilot holes at marked positions. Drill from outside of side boards toward shelf board end grain, so holes pass through side boards and penetrate shelf boards about 10mm deeper (total depth 29mm). Use masking tape on drill bit as depth gauge.

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 6 / 20

    Tip

    • 3mm pilot hole is about 70% diameter of 4.2mm coarse-thread screws used (38mm length), preventing wood splitting.
    • Each shelf board requires 2 screws on each side board, so for 6 shelves, drill 24 pilot holes total. Check diligently to avoid misses.

    Watch out

    • If pilot holes are too shallow, screws won't fully enter. Drill slightly deeper for safety.
    • Avoid drilling all the way through shelf boards; use tape as depth stop.
  7. 7

Temporarily fix shelf boards to one side board

    ≈ 20 min

Lay one side board on the floor, stand 6 shelf boards upright at marked positions, and temporarily fix with F-clamps. Use carpenter's square to confirm shelf boards are perpendicular to side board. Where square can't fit, confirm visually.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 20

    Tip

    • Stand shelf boards from bottom shelf upward for stable assembly.
    • Ideally use 6 clamps (one per shelf); if fewer clamps, proceed sequentially.

    Watch out

    • Securing at non-right angles will cause the whole assembly to be parallelogram-shaped. Always check with carpenter's square.
    • Shelf boards protruding beyond side board edges prevent rear panel installation.
  8. 8

    Screw fixing one side

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes from side board exterior into shelf boards. Use 2 screws per shelf position, total 12 screws. Screw heads should be flush or 0.5mm recessed into side board. Use moderate torque on impact driver, final tightening by hand about quarter turn.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 8 / 20

    Tip

    • Stagger the 2 screws slightly vertically to improve withdrawal strength.
    • If screw heads are very visible later, wood plugs can cover holes as an option.

    Watch out

    • Over-tightening screws on 19mm SPF lumber end grain causes splitting. Use moderate torque.
    • If screw enters crooked and pokes out rear side, remove screw, fill hole with wood putty and screw in alternate location.
  9. 9

Prepare to attach opposite side board

    ≈ 15 min

Stand the assembly fixed on one side, apply the other side board, aligning opposite ends of shelf boards to marked positions on side board, and clamp temporarily. Confirm right angles with assembly upright.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 9 / 20

    Tip

    • This step is recommended for two-person work: one holds, another clamps for accuracy.
    • Markings on opposite side board were made initially. Do not rewrite.

    Watch out

    • Attempting alone risks shelf boards dropping and injury. Use two people or lean assembly against wall to secure.
  10. 10

    Screw fix the opposite side

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes from the outside of opposite side board into shelf boards—2 screws per shelf, total 12 screws. With both side boards fixed, the bookshelf's main structure is complete.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 10 / 20

    Tip

    • After fixing both sides, check levelness of all shelf boards with level. If even one shelf is tilted, loosen screws and adjust.
    • Do not screw both sides simultaneously; fix all screws on one side then the other to avoid distortion.

    Watch out

    • Screwing both sides simultaneously causes warping. Complete one side first, then the other.
  11. 11

    Check overall level and diagonal

    ≈ 15 min

Place the assembled unit on the floor. Use level to confirm each shelf board is level. Measure diagonal distances (top-left to bottom-right, top-right to bottom-left) with tape measure. Confirm difference within 5mm. If bent, loosen clamps to adjust and add screws as needed.

    Check level
    Level ✓
    LevelSTEP 11 / 20

    Tip

    • Difference over 5mm in diagonals indicates parallelogram distortion. Correct before installing back panel.
    • Back panel increases rigidity. Correct distortion before attaching it.

    Watch out

    • Shelf boards sagging in center worsens under book weight. Shelf length of 600mm is acceptable. For over 1000mm, consider reinforcement.
  12. 12

    Prepare back panel attachment

    ≈ 10 min

Fit the 4mm plywood back panel (600×500mm) onto the bookshelf rear. Align all corners and check diagonals match to bookshelf (back panel fitting corrects final distortion). Once position confirmed, temporarily attach back panel with painter's tape.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 12 / 20

    Tip

    • Back panel suppresses unit distortion. Installing slightly angled reduces rigidity.
    • Use stapler or small nails for attachment; pre-drill pilot holes if using small nails.

    Watch out

    • If back panel is larger than bookshelf, trim excess. If smaller, leave uniform gap within 5mm on edges.
  13. 13

Fix back panel with staples or small nails

    ≈ 20 min

Attach back panel to side and shelf boards using 15mm staples (stapler) or small nails, spaced every 100-150mm around perimeter and at shelf positions. Start stapling from corners and along diagonals sequentially to minimize distortion.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 13 / 20

    Tip

    • Stapler (cost 1500-2500 yen) is faster than nails; good investment for bookshelf making.
    • Mark back panel shelf positions in pencil before fastening to avoid missing shelves.

    Watch out

    • Staples protruding inside the bookshelf can damage books. 15mm staples suitable for 19mm thickness.
    • Only attaching edges and shelf positions prevents back panel from bowing under load.
  14. 14

    Prepare L-bracket attachment

    ≈ 15 min

Attach four 50mm L-shaped brackets to the upper rear sides (two on each side). One side fixed to bookshelf top edge, other side fixed to wall. Locate wall studs using stud sensor in advance.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 14 / 20

    Tip

    • Cheap stud sensors from 100-yen shops lack accuracy; recommend home center versions costing 1000-2000 yen.
    • Wall studs usually spaced 455mm centers. Once one stud is found, approximate adjacent stud positions.

    Watch out

    • If screws don't hit studs but only drywall, anti-tip safety fails. Always screw into studs.
    • If bracketing position doesn't align with studs, shift bracket left or right so screws enter stud centers.
  15. 15

    Attach L-brackets to bookshelf

    ≈ 10 min

Fix four L-shaped brackets to side boards near top with 38mm coarse-thread screws into bracket's screw holes. Brackets should be flush or no more than 5mm protruding from side boards, extending perpendicular to wall.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 15 / 20

    Tip

    • Ensure bracket's bent part faces wall; screw holes face bookshelf side.

    Watch out

    • Bracket crookedness causes gaps between bracket and wall on installation. Check with level.
  16. 16

Set up bookshelf and fix to wall

    ≈ 20 min

Carry bookshelf upright to installation place (two-person recommended). Position flush against wall. Screw through L-bracket holes into wall studs with 45-50mm coarse-thread screws (included or purchased separately). Fix all four points to complete anti-tip safety.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 16 / 20

    Tip

    • 38mm screws are too short for wall fixing. Use 45-50mm length screws to reach studs.
    • Wall fixing is crucial to prevent tipping risk causing injury or death in earthquakes. Do not skip.

    Watch out

    • Drywall anchors alone lack strength. Always screw into wall studs.
    • If gap between wall and bookshelf is over 5mm, insert shim before fixing. Loose brackets lose effectiveness.
  17. 17

    Clean before painting

    ≈ 10 min

Clean entire bookshelf with vacuum and dry cloth to remove all wood dust, oils, and fingerprints. Cleaning quality greatly affects finish. Optionally mask the plywood back panel before painting as it absorbs paint quickly.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 17 / 20

    Tip

    • For perfect cleaning before painting, wipe with dry cloth → wet cloth → dry cloth in sequence.

    Watch out

    • Remaining wood dust causes rough paint surface. Use light to check.
  18. 18

    Apply oil stain first coat

    ≈ 40 min

Brush oil stain (such as Watco Oil or Kinura) evenly on all parts in order: side boards outer sides, shelf boards top surfaces, shelf boards undersides, back panel. After 10-15 minutes, wipe off excess with dry cloth. First coating uses about 60-70% of total stain quantity due to absorption.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 18 / 20

    Tip

    • Oil stain application sequence: brush on → wait 10-15 min → wipe off excess. Failure to wipe leaves sticky residue.
    • Brush width of 30-50mm best for bookshelf application; too large brushes miss details.

    Watch out

    • Not wiping off preserves stickiness for over a week. Always wipe off.
    • Plywood back panel absorbs stain quickly and unevenly; apply thinly and wipe carefully.
  19. 19

    Apply oil stain second coat

    ≈ 25 min

After first coat dries 24 hours, apply second coat with about 1/3 to 1/2 the amount of first coat and wipe off. Two coatings deepen color and increase protection. Full drying takes 24-48 hours.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 19 / 20

    Tip

    • Second coat evens out color irregularities from first coat; apply thinly and uniformly.
    • Add third coat for deeper color if desired.

    Watch out

    • Do not miss wiping on second coat; thick layers cause unevenness.
    • Keep indoors free of dust and insects during drying.
  20. 20

    Completion, start use, and inspection

    ≈ 15 min

After complete drying of oil (48 hours), place books and start use. Put heavy books on lower shelves, lighter books on upper shelves for balance and stability. After one week of use, recheck screw tightness and L-bracket fixings; retighten if needed.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 20 / 20

    Tip

    • Place heavy books like encyclopedias on bottom two shelves; upper shelves use light paperbacks.
    • Reapply oil every 3-5 years to restore sheen and protection.

    Watch out

    • Placing books too soon transfers oil residue to books. Wait 48 hours or more for drying.
    • Books absorb moisture; use a dehumidifier during rainy season. Moisture can cause bookshelf warping.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
