  1. 1

Final Check of Materials and Tools

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare 2 side boards of SPF lumber 1x10 (19×400×2200mm), 6 shelf boards (19×400×800mm), one 4mm plywood back panel (800×2200mm), 56 coarse-thread screws 38mm, and 4 L-shaped brackets 50mm. Tools include electric screwdriver, saw, measuring tape, carpenter's square, #120/#240 sandpaper, level, 2 F-clamps, brush and paint tray, and a stapler or fine nails.

    Measure
    W 800 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 20

    Tip

    • SPF lumber tends to warp. Check each piece visually upon purchase and select ones with warp under 1mm.
    • L-shaped brackets and screws form the critical safety system against tipping. Never omit them.

    Watch out

    • Check each SPF board for warping, splitting, and knots before purchase. Using boards warped over 1mm causes shelves to be uneven.
    • The 4mm thick plywood back panel is thin and prone to breaking during movement. Store it upright immediately after cutting.
  2. 2

    Securing a Workspace

    ≈ 10 min

Secure a workspace where a 2200mm tall bookshelf can be assembled standing. Ensure ceiling height of 2200mm or more and floor area around 1500×1200mm. Lay a blue sheet and support long materials with two saw horses.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 2 / 20

    Tip

    • Assemble the bookshelf lying on the floor; stand it up only in the final step. This method works even in small rooms.

    Watch out

    • It is difficult for one person to stand the completed bookshelf up. Use two people for safety.
    • If ceiling height is below 2000mm, the bookshelf will hit the ceiling upon standing. Check beforehand.
  3. 3

Creating the Cut List and Requesting Cuts

    ≈ 20 min

Submit a cut list for 2 side boards (2200mm), 6 shelf boards (800mm), and back panel (800×2200mm) to the home center. If cutting yourself, support long boards (2200mm) on two saw horses and perform pull cuts. Aim for cutting accuracy within ±2mm.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 3 / 20

    Tip

    • Each cut costs 30-50 yen. Requesting all cuts costs about 1000 yen and reduces time from 30 minutes to immediate.
    • Bundle the 6 identical shelf boards and cut them all at once for better accuracy.

    Watch out

    • 19mm thick SPF warps easily even with straight cuts. Use a guide for straight cuts.
    • 4mm plywood is flexible; support it underneath during cutting to prevent bending and distortion.
  4. 4

Sanding All Components (#120 then #240)

    ≈ 40 min

Sand all components first with #120 then #240 sandpaper. Pay special attention to shelf support surfaces on the side boards, upper and lower surfaces, and edges (cut ends) of the shelf boards. Rounding shelf edges for hand comfort improves usability. Clean all wood dust with a vacuum after sanding.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 4 / 20

    Tip

    • Smooth shelf surfaces facilitate easy placement and removal of books.
    • Edges tend to raise wood fibers; start sanding these with #120 carefully.

    Watch out

    • SPF lumber is soft; oversanding distorts dimensions. Use #120 primarily; #240 for finishing only.
    • Excessive rounding looks clumsy; keep edge rounding to about R2mm.
  5. 5

Marking Shelf Positions on Side Boards

    ≈ 15 min

Place the 2 side boards side by side and mark shelf fixing positions with pencil for 6 levels of shelves. Shelf spacing is usually 300mm intervals from bottom up covering 1800mm total or arranged with wider spacing at top for display. Align the two boards precisely to mark simultaneously for identical shelf positions.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 5 / 20

    Tip

    • Clamp the two side boards together before marking to ensure identical shelf positions on both sides.
    • Use standard book heights (A4 297mm, A5 210mm, bunko 150mm) as a reference for determining shelf spacing.

    Watch out

    • Misaligned shelf positions cause shelves to tilt; simultaneous marking when clamped is essential.
    • Don’t forget the 19mm shelf thickness when calculating spacing, or shelves will be too narrow in reality.
  6. 6

    Preparing Pilot Holes

    ≈ 20 min

Drill 3mm diameter pilot holes at the marked positions. Drill from the outside of the side board toward the shelf board end grain so that the hole passes through the side board first. Mark drill depth on the bit with tape to achieve 19mm through the side board plus 10mm into the shelf board equals 29mm total depth.

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 6 / 20

    Tip

    • A 3mm pilot hole diameter corresponds to about 70% of the 4.2mm screw shank diameter, preventing wood splitting.
    • Each shelf requires 4 pilot holes (2 on each side board). For 6 shelves that is 24 holes; be sure not to miss any.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient hole depth prevents screws from fully seating; drill slightly deeper than needed for safety.
    • Avoid drilling completely through the shelf board by using tape depth stops on the drill bit.
  7. 7

Temporarily Fixing Shelf Boards to One Side Board

    ≈ 20 min

Lay one side board flat and set the 6 shelf boards upright on their marked positions. Temporarily clamp each with an F-clamp and confirm that each shelf is at a right angle to the side board using a carpenter’s square. Where the square cannot fit, confirm visually.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 20

    Tip

    • Install shelves sequentially from bottom up for stability during assembly.
    • Ideally use one clamp per shelf board (6 clamps); if only 2 clamps are available, proceed stepwise.

    Watch out

    • Failing to ensure right angles causes the whole frame to skew into a parallelogram shape.
    • Shelves protruding beyond the side board edges later prevent fitting the back panel.
  8. 8

    Screw Fixing One Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Drive coarse-thread screws 38mm through the pilot holes from the outside of the side board into the shelf board ends: 2 screws per shelf position, total 12 screws. Screw heads should be flush or sunk up to 0.5mm into the side board. Use medium torque on the impact driver and finish tightening by hand with a quarter turn.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 8 / 20

    Tip

    • Slight vertical offset of the two screws increases pull-out strength.
    • If screw heads are visible, holes may be filled later with wood dowels (optional).

    Watch out

    • Over-tightening screws can split the 19mm thick SPF shelf ends; moderate torque is essential.
    • If screws go in crooked and penetrate the opposite side, remove, fill holes with wood putty, and screw in new positions.
  9. 9

Preparation for Installing the Opposite Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Stand the assembly with shelves fixed to one side board upright, place the other side board to the opposite ends of shelf boards aligning marks, and clamp for temporary fixing. Confirm right angles and that the entire assembly is vertical.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 9 / 20

    Tip

    • This step is recommended for two people: one to hold, one to clamp, for improved accuracy.
    • The opposite side board shelf position markings were made initially; no need to remark.

    Watch out

    • Attempting this alone risks shelves falling and damaging the floor. Use two people or lean assembly against a wall when working.
  10. 10

Screw Fixing the Opposite Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Drive coarse-thread screws 38mm through pilot holes from the opposite side board outward: 2 screws per shelf, 12 total for 6 shelves. This completes fixing both sides and shelf boards making the bookshelf’s main structure.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 10 / 20

    Tip

    • After fixing both sides, use a level to check each shelf’s horizontal alignment. Loosen screws to adjust if any shelf is tilted.

    Watch out

    • Do not drive screws into both sides simultaneously as this causes distortion. Fix one side fully then the other side.
  11. 11

    Overall Level and Diagonal Check

    ≈ 15 min

Place the assembled bookshelf on the floor and check all shelves are horizontal using a level. Measure diagonal distances (top-left to bottom-right and top-right to bottom-left) with tape measure and ensure difference is within 5mm. Correct any skew by loosening clamps and fasteners then re-tightening.

    Check level
    Level ✓
    LevelSTEP 11 / 20

    Tip

    • Diagonal difference over 5mm indicates a parallelogram skew; correct it before installing back panel.
    • The back panel increases rigidity; fix distortions before attaching it.

    Watch out

    • Shelf sagging worsens with book weight. Shelf length 600mm is allowed; consider reinforcements if over 1000mm.
  12. 12

    Preparing to Attach Back Panel

    ≈ 10 min

Position 4mm plywood back panel (800×2200mm) to the rear of the bookshelf. Align corners and confirm diagonal measurements match the frame (attaching the back panel allows final correction of distortion). Temporarily fix with masking tape.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 12 / 20

    Tip

    • Back panel is a key member to suppress distortion; even slight misalignment lowers rigidity.
    • Stapling is easy for 4mm plywood; use pilot holes if using fine nails.

    Watch out

    • If back panel is larger than the frame, trim excess. If smaller, maintain uniform 5mm or less gap around edges.
  13. 13

    Stapling the Back Panel

    ≈ 20 min

Attach the back panel to the side boards and shelves with a stapler (15mm staples) or fine nails. Staple every 100-150mm along all edges and where shelf boards meet the back panel. Start at corners and proceed along diagonal lines to minimize distortion.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 13 / 20

    Tip

    • Stapler costs 1500-2500 yen at home centers and is faster than nails; valuable investment for bookshelf assembly.
    • Mark shelf board positions with pencil on the back panel before stapling to avoid missing fasteners.

    Watch out

    • Staples protruding inside the bookshelf can damage books; 15mm length staples are appropriate for 19mm thick wood.
    • Staple only along edges and shelf positions; omission causes the back panel to bow.
  14. 14

    Preparing to Install L-shaped Brackets

    ≈ 15 min

Plan positioning of 4 L-shaped brackets 50mm at the top back left and right (2 brackets per side). One side attaches to the bookshelf edge and the other to the wall stud. Locate wall studs with a stud finder before installation.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 14 / 20

    Tip

    • Low-cost stud finders (~100 yen) have poor accuracy; home center models (1000-2000 yen) recommended.
    • Studs are usually spaced 455mm apart; locating one helps estimate neighbors.

    Watch out

    • Fixing brackets only to drywall without studs does not prevent tipping; always screw into studs.
    • If bracket positions do not match studs, shift brackets left or right to align screws with stud centers.
  15. 15

    Attaching L-shaped Brackets to Bookshelf

    ≈ 10 min

Attach the 4 L-shaped brackets to the bookshelf’s upper side board outsides using coarse-thread screws 38mm through the bracket’s screw holes. Fix brackets flush or within 5mm offset of the side board, oriented to project perpendicular towards the wall.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 15 / 20

    Tip

    • Ensure bracket bend faces the wall side and screw holes face bookshelf side per installation direction.

    Watch out

    • Misaligned brackets cause gaps between bracket and wall upon fixing. Check with a level.
  16. 16

Setting Up Bookshelf and Wall Fixing

    ≈ 20 min

Move the bookshelf to its intended location (two people recommended) and place snug against the wall. Screw through bracket holes into wall studs using coarse-thread screws 45-50mm length (included screws or separately purchased). Secure all four bracket points to complete the tip-over prevention system.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 16 / 20

    Tip

    • 38mm screws are too short for wall fixing; use 45-50mm screws to reach studs.
    • Wall fixing is the most critical step; neglect risks injury or death from earthquakes.

    Watch out

    • Drywall anchors alone lack sufficient strength; always screw into studs.
    • If gaps exceeding 5mm exist between bookshelf and wall, insert shims before fixing to ensure tight engagement.
  17. 17

    Cleaning Before Painting

    ≈ 10 min

Clean the entire bookshelf with a vacuum and dry cloth to completely remove sawdust, oils, and fingerprints. The quality of pre-paint cleaning strongly affects finish quality. Because the plywood back panel rapidly absorbs paint, optionally mask it beforehand.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 17 / 20

    Tip

    • Perform 'dry wipe → damp wipe → dry wipe' sequence to best prepare surfaces for painting.

    Watch out

    • Remaining sawdust causes rough texture on paint surfaces. Use proper lighting to check.
  18. 18

First Coat of Oil Stain Application

    ≈ 40 min

Apply oil stain (such as Watco Oil or Kinura) with a brush across all surfaces in the order: outside side boards → shelf board top surfaces → shelf board underside → back panel. After 10-15 minutes, wipe off excess with a dry cloth. Use 60-70% of the total oil volume for this first coat as absorption is high.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 18 / 20

    Tip

    • Follow application with 10-15 minute wait and wiping to avoid sticky residue.
    • Brush width between 30-50mm is optimal for working on bookshelf surfaces; larger brushes lack control in detail.

    Watch out

    • Failure to wipe off excess leaves stickiness for over a week.
    • Plywood back panel absorbs quickly and can patch unevenly; apply thinly and wipe thoroughly.
  19. 19

    Second Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 25 min

After 24 hours drying from the first coat, apply the second coat using one-third to one-half the amount used initially. Wipe off excess as before. Two coats deepen color and enhance protection. Full drying takes 24-48 hours after this coat.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 19 / 20

    Tip

    • The second coat corrects uneven coloring from the first. Apply thinly and evenly.
    • Add a third coat if a deeper color is desired.

    Watch out

    • Do not forget to wipe off excess during the second coat to prevent uneven finish.
    • Keep the drying bookshelf indoors free from dust and insects during drying.
  20. 20

    Completion, Starting Use and Inspection

    ≈ 15 min

After complete drying (48 hours), arrange books and begin use. Place heavy books on lower shelves and lighter books on upper shelves to maintain balance and stability. After one week, re-inspect screws and L-bracket fittings and tighten if necessary.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 20 / 20

    Tip

    • Concentrate heavy books (encyclopedias etc.) on the bottom two shelves; light volumes like bunko size on upper shelves.
    • Reapply oil finish approximately every 3-5 years to restore gloss and protective effects.

    Watch out

    • Placing books before full oil drying risks staining books; wait at least 48 hours.
    • Books absorb moisture; during humid seasons use dehumidifiers and prevent bookshelf warping.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
  • ⚠️When securing to the wall, always locate studs (fixing only to gypsum board is not allowed).
