Build steps

  1. 1

    Measure and Confirm Installation Environment

    ≈ 15 min

Measure the installation space for the kids camping chair (350×300×550mm). Ensure there is enough front and back space when the chair is pulled out (chair depth plus at least 400mm) and check circulation paths for dishes.

    Measure
    W 350 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 12

    Tip

    • For a standard dining style, allocate approximately 600mm width and 400mm depth per person.
    • A table height of 720mm is based on a typical dining chair seat height (420mm) plus a clearance of 300mm.
    • Ensure at least 800mm distance from the wall so the chair can be pulled out.

    Watch out

    • A tabletop size of 1200×700mm is standard for four people but can be cramped if many large dishes are served.
    • If the chair backrest is overlooked during measurement, entry and exit may become impossible.
  2. 2

Create Cutting List and Order from Home Center

    ≈ 40 min

Prepare two pieces of 2x6 lumber for the top board (38×140×350mm), four legs from 2x4 lumber (38×89×512mm), two long and two short aprons from 2x4 lumber (38×89×350mm each). Also, prepare 60 pieces of coarse-thread screws 75mm. Using home center paid cutting service is convenient.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 2 / 12

    Tip

    • 2x6 lumber actual size is 38×140mm; note that nominal and actual sizes differ.
    • Arranging 9 top boards creates a width of 140×9=1260mm; even with 3mm gaps between boards, total width is 1284mm.
    • Effective top board width is 9 boards ×140mm plus 8 gaps ×3mm = 1284mm, exceeding 350mm width; adjust number or width of boards accordingly.

    Watch out

    • Selecting warped or twisted 2x6 lumber results in an uneven top board; inspect each piece at purchase.
    • Leg length must be 512mm (550mm height minus top board thickness 38mm); specify actual sizes to avoid cutting errors.
  3. 3

    Sand All Components

    ≈ 50 min

Sand using #120, then #180, and finally #240 grit sandpaper. Sand the 2x6 lumber (top boards) thoroughly — wiping with a damp cloth repeatedly to raise the grain, then fully dry before finishing with #240 grit improves resistance to staining during meals.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 3 / 12

    Tip

    • Eating surfaces must be free of splinters; confirm by running the fingertips gently over surfaces.
    • The wet sanding and drying process ('water raising') reduces roughness after use.
    • Using an orbital sander saves time; consider rental services.

    Watch out

    • Neglecting to chamfer corners causes snagging on clothes or skin, especially around children's face height.
    • Sanding creates much dust; perform in ventilated areas such as a balcony or garage.
  4. 4

Temporarily Assemble Legs and Aprons to Form Frame

    ≈ 45 min

Place four legs and mark 50mm from the top end of each (below the end) to position the long and short apron boards. Attach aprons on the outside of the legs using two coarse-thread screws 75mm per joint. Verify the frame is rectangular using a carpenter's square to check corners are right angles.

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 4 / 12

    Tip

    • Attaching aprons outside the legs looks better but attaching inside provides stronger contact with the top board.
    • Drill 5mm diameter pilot holes in apron boards before screwing to prevent leg wood splitting.
    • Perfect right angles at joints directly affect top board fit after assembly.

    Watch out

    • Driving 75mm screws without pilot holes easily splits the 2x4 lumber.
    • Assembling legs without aligning knots and wood grain results in a mismatched appearance.
  5. 5

Check Frame Square and Diagonal Dimensions

    ≈ 15 min

Place assembled frame on a flat floor and check all four legs contact the floor (no wobble). Measure diagonal lengths inside frame using a tape measure; ensure difference is within 2mm. If out of tolerance, loosen screws and clamp frame diagonally to adjust, then retighten.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 5 / 12

    Tip

    • Ensure floor is level for accurate measurement.
    • If diagonal difference exceeds 5mm, the top board will sit crooked; keep under 2mm.
    • Wobble means one leg is off the floor; adjust until all four legs are firmly grounded.

    Watch out

    • Ignoring frame distortion before proceeding causes uneven or misaligned top boards.
    • Cheap carpenter's squares may be inaccurate by over 0.5°, affecting assembly quality.
  6. 6

    Assemble Top Board

    ≈ 40 min

Arrange nine pieces of 2x6 lumber side by side on a workbench, aligning grain direction. Insert 3mm thick chopsticks between boards to maintain expansion gaps (allowing wood movement). Attach two 2x4 lumber reinforcement strips underneath using wood glue and coarse-thread screws 45mm, securing the top board into one piece.

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 6 / 12

    Tip

    • Alternate grain orientation by flipping every other board to minimize warping and splitting.
    • Place reinforcement strips 200mm inside from each edge for neat appearance.
    • Ensure 45mm screws do not penetrate the 38mm thick top board by measuring length carefully.

    Watch out

    • Fitting boards tightly without gaps causes swelling and warping due to moisture; maintain 3mm gaps.
    • Attaching reinforcement strips crookedly distorts the entire top board; confirm right angles with a square.
  7. 7

    Fix Top Board to Frame

    ≈ 30 min

Place the top board on the frame, check for an even overhang of around 30mm on all sides. Drill pilot holes of 5mm diameter from apron boards into top board underside and drive twelve coarse-thread screws 75mm total (four from long aprons and two from short aprons) to fix.

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 12

    Tip

    • An overhang of 30-50mm does not interfere with dining actions.
    • Screw near inner edges of aprons, not at their centers, to reduce wood grain splitting.
    • Keep screw length to apron thickness plus 20mm to prevent top board penetration.

    Watch out

    • Driving 75mm screws directly may make screw heads protrude on top board surface; use pilot holes and countersinking as necessary.
    • Excessive overhang (over 50mm) causes top board to sag; 30mm is optimal.
  8. 8

    Prepare Surface for Finishing

    ≈ 20 min

Lightly sand entire surface again with #240 grit sandpaper and remove dust with a damp cloth before painting. Use water-based urethane varnish, wood preservative stains like Xyladecor, or Osmo Color for outdoor use. Use finishes labeled as food-safe on surfaces contacting food for safety.

    Sand
    #240
    SandSTEP 8 / 12

    Tip

    • Water-based urethane varnish (matte or semi-gloss) is durable to water and heat, ideal for dining surfaces.
    • Xyladecor preserves natural wood texture and gives a soft finish.
    • Test paint samples on scrap wood to confirm color before final application.

    Watch out

    • Areas with glue repel paint; sand again with #240 grit at these spots.
    • Leaving dust on the wood before painting causes rough coating surfaces; clean thoroughly.
  9. 9

    First Coat of Finish

    ≈ 40 min

Apply finish with a brush evenly over entire surface in order: top board, aprons, legs, then underside. Brush along wood grain in one direction to avoid brush marks. For water-based urethane varnish, wait about 3 hours; for Xyladecor, allow 15-20 minutes penetration then wipe off and dry for 2 hours.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 9 / 12

    Tip

    • Apply thin coats of urethane varnish twice rather than thick coats to prevent bubbles and shrinking.
    • For Xyladecor, wipe off excess to avoid stickiness after drying.
    • Place item in a dust-free environment during drying.

    Watch out

    • Applying thick varnish causes drips and uneven finish after drying.
    • Drying with direct heat causes surface curing only and trapped moisture inside; allow natural drying.
  10. 10

Intermediate Sanding and Second Coat of Finish

    ≈ 40 min

After the first coat has fully dried, gently sand the surface with very fine #400 grit sandpaper (intermediate sanding). Remove dust carefully then apply the second coat. Apply thinner coats than the first. For dining tables, applying three coats with an additional intermediate sanding is recommended for thicker finish.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 10 / 12

    Tip

    • Light intermediate sanding with #400 grit only smooths raised fibers.
    • Two coats increase waterproofing and abrasion resistance significantly, essential for dining surfaces.
    • Three coats produce a hard, glossy professional table-like finish.

    Watch out

    • Excessive intermediate sanding may remove the first coat finish.
    • Touching surface before fully dried causes fingerprints and dust to adhere; adhere to 24-hour drying time before handling.
  11. 11

    Wait for Complete Finish Hardening

    ≈ 10 min

After finishing, wait at least 72 hours without placing heavy objects on the surface for the finish to harden completely. Water-based urethane varnish takes up to one week for full cure. During this curing period, avoid dining or work on the surface and cover it lightly with cloth to prevent dust settling.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 11 / 12

    Tip

    • Curing times vary by finish type; follow the label instructions strictly.
    • Check full curing by pressing gently with fingernail and ensuring no marks remain.
    • Drying time varies with temperature: 3-4 days in summer and one week or more in winter.

    Watch out

    • Placing hot pots directly before cure causes finish softening and marks.
    • Dropping tableware before full cure chips the finish; handle with care.
  12. 12

Attach Leg Pads and Final Checks

    ≈ 20 min

Stick felt pads on all four legs to protect the floor from damage. Move the chair to its installation spot and use a level to confirm horizontal alignment. If wobble occurs, adjust pad thickness. Test sitting on the chair and confirm knees do not hit apron boards.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 12 / 12

    Tip

    • Use 10mm thick felt pads to absorb floor unevenness.
    • Felt pads are suitable for hard floors; rubber pads better for tatami mats.
    • If wobble remains, use thinner pads on one leg to adjust.

    Watch out

    • Using chair without pads damages floors due to weight.
    • Incorrect seat-to-table height difference (270-300mm) causes poor eating posture.

Warnings

  • ⚠️For outdoor use, wood preservative coating is essential (recoat annually recommended).
  • ⚠️Use stainless steel screws (iron screws will rust).
  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before screwing to prevent wood splitting.
