Build steps

  1. 1

    Measuring and Confirming Installation Location

    ≈ 15 min

Measure the installation space for the sandbox box (1200×1200×1200mm). Check the width of the space, ensure at least 600mm for a passageway, and confirm the opening range of doors.

    Measure
    W 1200 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 13

    Tip

    • Place away from directly under rain gutters and drains.
    • Leave at least a 20mm gap between walls and furniture for easier cleaning.
    • Avoid boundaries between wood decks or soil and the boards (ground) to prevent instability.

    Watch out

    • If the installation space is less than 1200mm wide, installation is impossible. Pre-measurement is crucial.
    • Outdoor installation areas are often high-traffic; protruding placements pose a trip hazard.
  2. 2

Creating the Cutting List for Parts

    ≈ 30 min

Cut the 19mm cedar boards into front and rear boards (19×120×1200mm) ×6 each, side boards (19×120×1200mm) ×6 each. Bottom board is 12mm lauan plywood (12×1162×1162mm) ×1. Corner posts are 2x4 lumber cut to (38×89×1200mm) ×4. Using the home center’s paid cutting service is convenient.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 2 / 13

    Tip

    • Cedar boards have significant individual differences in knots and warping; select each piece by hand.
    • The 500mm length for corner posts includes the combined height of four front/rear boards (120×4=480mm) plus an additional 20mm margin.
    • When using cutting services, specifying grain alignment improves appearance.

    Watch out

    • Cut ends of cedar boards absorb water easily; apply preservative thoroughly later.
    • Note that 2x4 lumber actual size is 38×89mm; specify '38×89' when ordering cuts (nominal vs actual size differs).
  3. 3

    Sanding All Parts

    ≈ 40 min

Sand all parts using #120 grit followed by #240 grit sandpaper. Cedar is soft and prone to warping and splintering, so sand the end grain and surfaces carefully. Chamfer the edges of corner posts (2x4 lumber) to prevent catching shoes or bumping feet, creating smooth corners.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 3 / 13

    Tip

    • Confirm wood grain direction before sanding, as sanding against the grain causes splinters.
    • Flatly sand end grain with #120 grit before finishing with #240 grit; skipping this leads to uneven painting.
    • Using an orbital sander can reduce sanding time to one-third; consider rental services.

    Watch out

    • Sanding produces a lot of dust; do it in well-ventilated spaces like balconies or garages.
    • Do not paint over dust without cleaning; use air dusters or damp cloths to remove residue or surface will feel rough.
  4. 4

Standing and Temporarily Fixing Corner Posts

    ≈ 25 min

Stand four 2x4 lumber corner posts vertically and place at the four corners of the workbench. Temporarily fix them with clamps to keep top and bottom level. Use a level to confirm vertical alignment. Measure the distance between posts to be 600mm front to back and 300mm side to side (internal dimensions).

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 4 / 13

    Tip

    • Check verticality with a level on two faces (front and side) aiming for zero deviation.
    • Concrete floors or cushioned flooring may be uneven; place plywood first to create a flat work surface.
    • Align knots all facing the same direction for better appearance; rotate posts when positioning.

    Watch out

    • If even one post is off vertical, installed boards will lean.
    • When measuring intervals with a tape measure, be consistent measuring either the inside or outside edges; inconsistency may cause 5-10mm errors.
  5. 5

Installing Front and Rear Boards (Starting from the Bottom)

    ≈ 40 min

Horizontally place the 1st cedar board at the bottom front. Apply wood glue to both corner posts, then fasten with 65mm coarse-thread screws – 2 screws on each side (4 total per board). Subsequent boards are stacked with a 5mm ventilation gap (about the thickness of one chopstick) between boards. Attach 5 boards to the front and 5 to the rear, totaling 10 boards.

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 5 / 13

    Tip

    • 5mm ventilation gaps prevent moisture buildup in shoes; closing gaps causes mold.
    • Use chopsticks to keep the gap uniform.
    • Drill Ø4mm pilot holes near the corner posts before screwing to avoid wood splitting.

    Watch out

    • Not drilling pilot holes before screwing causes cedar boards to crack.
    • Driving screws too deep will dent the board surface; stop flush with the board face.
  6. 6

Installing Side Boards (Left and Right)

    ≈ 35 min

Install 6 side boards (19×120×1200mm) similarly with ventilation gaps, 5 boards each side. Before attaching, adjust the front and rear boards so their end grains meet flush at corners. While fixing boards, measure diagonals front-to-back with a tape measure and adjust clamps so both diagonal lengths are equal.

    Build the frame
    Tighten joints firmly
    AssembleSTEP 6 / 13

    Tip

    • Unequal diagonal lengths distort the frame into a parallelogram; clamp to adjust until equal.
    • Side boards fit inside front and rear boards, so offset pilot hole positions slightly from front/rear board edges.
    • For cleaner corners, cut corner posts at 45 degrees before fastening if desired.

    Watch out

    • Ventilation slit positions must align with front and rear boards for a consistent look.
    • More than 5mm diagonal difference causes stored items to not fit properly.
  7. 7

    Processing and Installing Bottom Board

    ≈ 25 min

On the 12mm lauan plywood bottom board (262×562mm), drill nine Ø20mm ventilation holes arranged evenly in a 3x3 grid. Ensure holes are at least 50mm from all edges and 100mm apart from each other. Insert the bottom board into the lower box structure and fasten it to the four corner posts with 45mm coarse-thread screws.

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 7 / 13

    Tip

    • Vent holes are important to let shoe moisture escape; do not reduce the number of holes.
    • Use a hole saw for clean holes; woodworking drills are also acceptable.
    • The bottom edge facing the ground is not visible, so edge banding is unnecessary.

    Watch out

    • If the bottom board is warped, it will not fully contact the posts; check flatness first and if warped, install inverted and fix with screws to correct.
    • Locating holes too close to edges reduces strength; keep holes over 50mm from edges.
  8. 8

Final Check of Right Angles and Diagonals

    ≈ 15 min

After assembly, use a carpenter's square to check that the four inside corners are 90 degrees. Measure the two diagonal lengths with a tape measure and verify the difference is within 2mm. If misaligned, loosen screws, clamp to correct, then retighten screws.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 8 / 13

    Tip

    • The diagonal difference indicates assembly accuracy. Within 2mm is acceptable for practical use.
    • Perform checks on level ground for accurate measurements.
    • Check that no screws are loose or improperly inserted by feeling them with fingers.

    Watch out

    • Ignoring distortion will cause problems opening and closing the lid later.
    • Loose screws may cause wobbling or collapse under shoe load later.
  9. 9

    Preparation for Painting and Sanding

    ≈ 15 min

Lightly sand the entire assembly with #240 grit sandpaper before painting, then remove dust with a damp cloth. Even out uneven areas around screw heads and end grains. For exterior use, wood preservatives such as Xyladecor or Osmo Color are convenient.

    Sand
    #240
    SandSTEP 9 / 13

    Tip

    • Cedar absorbs paint heavily; plan for two coats.
    • Apply wood preservative generously on end grains as the exposed fibers soak in easily.
    • Apply Xyladecor with a cloth rubbing it in; this gives a more uniform finish than a brush.

    Watch out

    • Rough sanding before painting causes uneven paint and hairs to stand out.
    • Painting over dust without cleaning results in a rough surface.
  10. 10

    First Coat of Paint

    ≈ 30 min

Apply Xyladecor or water-based paint over all surfaces. Use a brush or cloth to coat wood grain in one direction. Let it soak for 15-20 minutes, then wipe off excess with a dry cloth. Apply brush strokes diagonally to ventilation slits to avoid missed spots. Allow to dry naturally for at least 2 hours.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 10 / 13

    Tip

    • The 'paint and wipe' method with Xyladecor preserves the wood grain texture.
    • Avoid paint buildup in ventilation gaps; wipe off excess to speed drying.
    • For outdoor work, ensure good ventilation and open windows to reduce volatile odors.

    Watch out

    • If wiping off excess is skipped, tackiness persists for several days.
    • Applying thick coats causes uneven drying and later peeling. Thin, two coats is essential.
  11. 11

Intermediate Sanding and Second Coat of Paint

    ≈ 25 min

After the first coat dries, lightly sand the surface with #320 grit sandpaper (intermediate sanding). Remove dust, then apply the second, slightly thinner coat in the same manner and wipe off excess. Allow full curing for 24 hours.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 11 / 13

    Tip

    • Intermediate sanding only smooths raised paint fibers without removing the film.
    • Two coats significantly improve wood preservation; do not skip the second coat.
    • Keep drying area clean and dust free.

    Watch out

    • Over-sanding during intermediate sanding peels the first coat.
    • Skipping the second coat halves the preservative effect; this is critical for outdoor installations where moisture is high.
  12. 12

Attaching Feet Pads and Waterproofing Measures

    ≈ 15 min

Attach felt pads or non-slip rubber pads to the bottom ends of the corner posts. If placing directly on the ground, raise the box about 10cm on bricks or blocks. For tile surfaces, silicone pads are recommended to prevent slipping.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    InstallSTEP 12 / 13

    Tip

    • Felt pads absorb moisture and get dirty; rubber or silicone pads are better for outdoor use.
    • Pads are essential on all four corner posts; omitting the center causes tilting.
    • After installation, monitor for a week, ensuring ventilation while paint odor dissipates.

    Watch out

    • Without pads, floors get scratched and wet floors increase slipping risk.
    • Some silicone pads have weak adhesives; using commercial double-sided tape with them improves adhesion.
  13. 13

    Final Inspection and Shoe Storage

    ≈ 15 min

Check all screws are tight, ventilation slits are uniform, and finish has no paint irregularities. Use a level to check for wobbling; adjust pad thickness to level the box if needed. Avoid placing heavy objects for a week until paint is fully cured. Store shoes only when dry.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 13 / 13

    Tip

    • Wipe moisture off wet shoes before storing to prevent trapped humidity.
    • Ideal shoe storage capacity is about 80% full; overfilling blocks ventilation.
    • Ventilate monthly by removing all shoes and drying with a fan to prolong durability.

    Watch out

    • Placing wet shoes before paint cures leaves shoe-shaped marks on the finish.
    • Forcing too many shoes causes board deformation.

Warnings

  • ⚠️If used outdoors, wood preservative coating is essential (re-coating recommended once a year).
  • ⚠️Use stainless steel screws (iron screws will rust).
  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before screwing to prevent wood splitting.
