Build steps

  1. 1

Final Confirmation of Materials and Tools

    ≈ 15 min

Gather two side panels (SPF lumber 1×10, 19×250×900mm), six shelf boards (19×250×800mm), one 4mm plywood back panel (800×900mm), 24 coarse-thread screws 38mm, and four 50mm L-shaped brackets. Tools include an electric driver, saw, measuring tape, carpenter's square, #120/#240 sandpaper, level, two F-type clamps, brush and paint tray, stapler or small nails.

    Measure
    W 800 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 20

    Tip

    • SPF lumber tends to warp. Check each board visually upon purchase and select those with warp within 1mm.
    • L-shaped brackets and screws are critical for 'tipping prevention'. Do not omit them.

    Watch out

    • Check each SPF board individually for warp, cracks, and knots before purchase. Using boards with warp exceeding 1mm will distort the shelves.
    • The 4mm plywood back panel is thin and easy to break during transport. After cutting, store it upright immediately.
  2. 2

    Securing a Work Space

    ≈ 10 min

Secure a workspace where you can stand up the 900mm high bookshelf. A ceiling height of at least 2200mm and a floor area around 1500×1200mm is ideal. Lay a blue sheet and support long materials on two saw horses.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 2 / 20

    Tip

    • Assembly is done lying on the floor; standing it up is the final step. You can work even in small rooms.

    Watch out

    • Raising the assembled bookshelf alone is difficult. Use two people for safety.
    • If ceiling height is below 2000mm, the bookshelf might hit the ceiling when standing up. Check in advance.
  3. 3

Creating a Cutting List and Requesting Cuts

    ≈ 20 min

Submit to the home center a cutting list for two side panels (900mm), six shelf boards (800mm), and the back panel (800×900mm). If cutting yourself, support the long boards on two saw horses and make straight pull cuts. Aim for cut accuracy within ±2mm.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 3 / 20

    Tip

    • Cutting fee is 30-50 yen per cut. Requesting all cuts costs about 1000 yen and reduces 30 minutes to near instant completion.
    • Bundle the six shelf boards of the same length for a single cut to get the highest accuracy.

    Watch out

    • Even straight cuts on 19mm thick SPF lumber tend to warp. Use guides for straight cutting.
    • 4mm plywood is soft and will warp if not supported underneath during cutting.
  4. 4

Sanding All Components (#120 to #240)

    ≈ 40 min

Sand all components with #120 grit followed by #240 grit. Pay special attention to shelf support surfaces on the side panels, upper and lower surfaces of shelf boards, and the edges of cut wood (ends). Rounding off shelf edges where hands touch improves usability. After sanding, vacuum thoroughly to remove all wood dust.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 4 / 20

    Tip

    • Smooth shelf board surfaces help books slide in and out smoothly.
    • Edges (cut ends) have fibers raised and require careful sanding starting with #120.

    Watch out

    • SPF lumber is soft; sanding too much alters dimensions. Use #120 primarily and #240 only for finishing.
    • Over-rounding edges can look clumsy. Keep radius around R2mm.
  5. 5

Marking Shelf Positions on Side Panels

    ≈ 15 min

Lay the two side panels side by side and mark the fixed positions for the six shelf boards in pencil. Shelf spacing is typically six tiers of 300mm from bottom up (totaling 1800mm), or wider spaces at the top for decorations, per your design. Align the two side panels completely before marking simultaneously to ensure matching shelf positions.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 5 / 20

    Tip

    • Clamp the two side panels together before marking to guarantee identical shelf locations on left and right.
    • Use A4 (297mm height), A5 (210mm), and bunko (150mm) book sizes as references when deciding shelf spacing for easy storage.

    Watch out

    • If shelf positions on left and right sides are mismatched, shelf boards will be installed crookedly. Clamping before marking is essential.
    • Remember the 19mm thickness of shelf boards when calculating spacing; otherwise, actual spacing will be narrower.
  6. 6

    Preparing Pilot Holes

    ≈ 20 min

Drill 3mm diameter pilot holes at the marking locations. Drill from the outside of the side panel through towards the shelf board edge, so that the pilot hole passes through the side panel (19mm) plus 10mm into the shelf board (total 29mm). Use masking tape as a depth indicator.

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 6 / 20

    Tip

    • 3mm pilot holes are about 70% of the 4.2mm screw shaft diameter, effectively preventing wood splitting.
    • Each shelf requires 2 pilot holes per side panel = 6 shelves × 4 holes = 24 holes total. Check you do not miss any.

    Watch out

    • If pilot hole depth is insufficient, screws will not seat properly. Drill slightly deeper to be safe.
    • Avoid drilling completely through the shelf board's opposite side by using masking tape to limit depth.
  7. 7

Temporary Shelf Fixing on One Side Panel

    ≈ 20 min

Lay one side panel flat on the floor and stand the six shelf boards in position according to the markings. Temporarily fix with F-type clamps and check that side panel and shelf boards form right angles with a carpenter’s square. Where the square can’t fit, visually confirm the angle.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 20

    Tip

    • Standing shelf boards one at a time from bottom up increases stability.
    • Ideally use one clamp per shelf board (6 total) to ease work; if not available, use two clamps and fix sequentially.

    Watch out

    • Fixing at an incorrect angle results in a parallelogram shape. Always check with carpenter’s square.
    • Shelf boards protruding past the edges of side panels prevent back panel installation later.
  8. 8

    Screwing One Side Panel

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through the pilot holes from the outside of the side panel into the shelf board edges. Use two screws per attachment point, 6 shelves × 2 screws = 12 screws. Screw heads should be flush or countersunk about 0.5mm below side panel surface. Use medium torque on an impact driver and tighten the last 1/4 turn by hand.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 8 / 20

    Tip

    • Slightly offsetting the two screws vertically increases pull-out strength.
    • If screw heads are visible and unsightly, wood plugs can be added later as an option.

    Watch out

    • Over-torquing screws can split the 19mm thick SPF lumber edge. Maintain medium torque.
    • If the screw goes in crooked and pokes out the other side, remove and fill with wood filler, then reinsert in a different spot.
  9. 9

Preparing Attachment of Opposite Side Panel

    ≈ 15 min

Stand the partially assembled bookshelf and fit the other side panel opposite to the first. Align the opposite ends of the six shelf boards with the pencil marks on the side panel and temporarily clamp. Check right angles with the bookshelf vertical.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 9 / 20

    Tip

    • Two-person work is recommended: one to hold, one to clamp, for precision.
    • The pencil marks on the opposite side panel were made at the start; do not re-mark.

    Watch out

    • Trying to do this alone risks shelf boards dropping out and hitting the floor. Always have two people or brace the bookshelf against a wall.
  10. 10

    Screwing Opposite Side Panel

    ≈ 15 min

Use the pilot holes on the outside of the opposite side panel to drive 38mm coarse-thread screws similarly: 2 screws per shelf board position, 12 screws total. This completes fixing both side panels to the six shelf boards, forming the main structure of the bookshelf.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 10 / 20

    Tip

    • After fixing both sides, check shelf horizontality with a level. If any shelf tilts, loosen screws and adjust.

    Watch out

    • Do not screw both sides simultaneously as this causes distortion. Fully fix one side first, then the other.
  11. 11

Level and Diagonal Checks of Overall Frame

    ≈ 15 min

Place the assembled bookshelf on the floor and check shelf levels with a level. From the front, measure diagonal lengths (top-left to bottom-right, top-right to bottom-left) with a measuring tape to ensure the difference is within 5mm. If distorted, loosen clamps to adjust, then add screws to fix.

    Check level
    Level ✓
    LevelSTEP 11 / 20

    Tip

    • A diagonal difference exceeding 5mm indicates a parallelogram shape. Correct this before attaching the back panel.
    • The back panel stiffens the bookshelf structure; correct any distortion prior to installation.

    Watch out

    • Shelf bending (sagging in the center) worsens under heavy books. For shelf lengths around 600mm, this is acceptable; over 1000mm requires reinforcement considerations.
  12. 12

    Preparing to Attach Back Panel

    ≈ 10 min

Place the 4mm plywood back panel (800×900mm) against the bookshelf’s rear. Align corners and verify the diagonals match exactly (the back panel will further correct any frame distortion). Once positioned, lightly tape the back panel to the frame with protective tape.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 12 / 20

    Tip

    • The back panel is critical for controlling frame distortion. Attaching it crookedly reduces its strength.
    • The 4mm plywood can be easily stapled. Use pilot holes if securing with small nails.

    Watch out

    • If the back panel is larger than the bookshelf, trim the protruding edges. If smaller, leave an even gap of about 5mm along the edges.
  13. 13

    Stapling the Back Panel

    ≈ 20 min

Attach the back panel to the side panels and shelf boards with a stapler (15mm staples) or small nails every 100-150mm around the perimeter and along shelf board positions. Start at the four corners, then diagonally to minimize distortion.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 13 / 20

    Tip

    • Investing in a stapler (1500-2500 yen) is worthwhile for quick assembly compared to nails.
    • Mark shelf board positions on the back panel with pencil before stapling to avoid missing attachment points.

    Watch out

    • Staple tips protruding into the bookshelf interior can damage books. Use 15mm staples for the 19mm thickness.
    • Stapling only along the four edges without the shelf board line will cause the back panel to bow out.
  14. 14

    Preparing L-shaped Bracket Installation

    ≈ 15 min

Attach four 50mm L-shaped brackets near the top rear: two on each side. One flange mounts flush to the bookshelf top edge, the other secures to the wall when fixed. Use a stud finder to locate wall studs in advance.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 14 / 20

    Tip

    • Inexpensive stud finders (~100 yen) lack accuracy; home improvement store versions (~1000-2000 yen) recommended.
    • Wall studs are usually spaced 455mm apart. Once one stud is located, estimate the next.

    Watch out

    • Drywall alone will not provide anchor strength, so attaching brackets without hitting studs won't prevent tipping.
    • If bracket positions don’t align with studs, adjust bracket left or right to center screws on the stud.
  15. 15

    Attaching L-shaped Brackets to Bookshelf

    ≈ 10 min

Attach four L-shaped brackets to the outside of the bookshelf’s top side panels using 38mm coarse-thread screws through the bracket holes. Fix brackets flush or up to 5mm raised from the panel for proper wall attachment.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 15 / 20

    Tip

    • Ensure the bracket is oriented with the bent flange toward the wall and screw holes facing the bookshelf.
    • Use a level to avoid installing brackets skewed, which would create gaps during wall fixing.

    Watch out

    • Installing brackets at an angle creates a gap between bracket and wall, reducing strength.
  16. 16

    Installing Bookshelf and Wall Fixing

    ≈ 20 min

Move the bookshelf to the installation spot (two persons recommended). Push flush against the wall and drive 45-50mm coarse-thread screws (provided or purchased separately) through the wall-facing holes in the L-brackets into the wall studs. Fix all four screws to complete tipping prevention.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 16 / 20

    Tip

    • 38mm screws are too short for wall stud anchoring; use 45-50mm screws.
    • Wall fixing is the most critical step. Skimping could cause injury or death from earthquake topple.

    Watch out

    • Using only drywall anchors is inadequate. Always screw into studs.
    • If gaps over 5mm exist between bookshelf and wall, insert shims before fixing; otherwise, bracket effectiveness is reduced.
  17. 17

    Cleaning Before Finishing

    ≈ 10 min

Thoroughly clean the entire bookshelf with a vacuum and dry cloth to remove wood dust, oils, and fingerprints. Surface cleanliness before finishing greatly affects the final appearance. Optionally, mask the plywood back panel since it absorbs finishing oil quickly.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 17 / 20

    Tip

    • Wipe in three steps: dry wipe → damp wipe → dry wipe for perfect cleaning.

    Watch out

    • Remaining wood dust causes rough texture on finish. Check by shining a light on surfaces.
  18. 18

Applying First Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 40 min

Apply oil stain (such as Watco Oil or Kinura) with a brush evenly on the side panel exteriors, then the shelf board top surfaces, inner surfaces, and lastly the back panel. After 10-15 minutes, wipe off excess with a dry cloth. Use about 60-70% of the total oil for the first coat as absorption is high.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 18 / 20

    Tip

    • Apply oil → wait 10-15 minutes → wipe off excess. Leaving unremoved oil causes sticky residue.
    • A 30-50mm wide brush is ideal. Larger brushes cannot neatly reach corners.

    Watch out

    • Forgetting to wipe causes stickiness lasting over a week. Always wipe off.
    • Plywood back panel absorbs quickly and may cause unevenness; apply thin coats and wipe carefully.
  19. 19

Applying Second Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 25 min

After the first coat dries for 24 hours, apply the second coat using about 1/3 to 1/2 the amount of the first coat. Wipe off excess again. Two coats deepen the color and enhance protection. Allow 24-48 hours final drying.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 19 / 20

    Tip

    • The second coat corrects color unevenness from the first. Apply evenly in thin layers.
    • Add a third coat if a darker color is desired.

    Watch out

    • Do not forget to wipe the second coat as well. Thick layers cause unevenness.
    • Dry indoors and protect from dust and insects during drying.
  20. 20

Completion, Start of Use, and Inspection

    ≈ 15 min

After complete drying (48 hours), place books and start use. Store heavy books on the lower shelves and lighter books on top to balance stability. After one week of use, recheck screws and L-bracket fixtures and tighten if needed.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 20 / 20

    Tip

    • Place heavy books (encyclopedias etc.) concentrated on the lower two shelves; use lighter paperbacks and novels on top shelves.
    • Reapplying oil every 3-5 years restores gloss and protection.

    Watch out

    • Placing books immediately may cause oil to transfer onto them. Do not place books until at least 48 hours dry time.
    • Books absorb moisture; use dehumidifiers during humid seasons to prevent bookshelf warping.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
