Build steps

  1. 1

Final Check of Materials and Tools

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare two side boards (SPF lumber 1x10, 19×350×400mm), six shelf boards (19×350×450mm), one 4mm thick plywood back panel (450×400mm), sixteen 38mm coarse-thread screws, and four 50mm L-brackets. Ensure you have the electric driver, saw, measuring tape, carpenter's square, #120 and #240 grit sandpaper, level, two F-type clamps, brush and paint tray, stapler or small nails.

    Measure
    W 450 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 20

    Tip

    • SPF lumber tends to warp; inspect each board visually at purchase and select those with warping within 1mm.
    • L-brackets and screws are crucial for preventing tipping—do not omit them.

    Watch out

    • Check every SPF board for warping, cracking, or knots before purchase; boards warped more than 1mm cause warped shelves.
    • 4mm plywood back panel is thin and fragile; after cutting, store it upright immediately to prevent breakage.
  2. 2

    Securing the Workspace

    ≈ 10 min

Secure a workspace where you can stand a 400mm tall bookshelf upright. Ceiling height should be at least 2200mm, floor space around 1500×1200mm provides ample room. Lay a blue sheet and support long materials on two sawhorses.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 2 / 20

    Tip

    • Assembly is done lying on the floor; raising upright is the final step, allowing work even in small rooms.

    Watch out

    • Assembled bookshelf is difficult for one person to stand upright; use two people for safety.
    • If ceiling height is less than 2000mm, the bookshelf might hit the ceiling when upright; check beforehand.
  3. 3

Creating Cut List and Ordering Cuts

    ≈ 20 min

Submit cutting list to home center for two side boards (400mm), six shelf boards (450mm), and one back panel (450×400mm). If cutting yourself, support long pieces on two sawhorses and cut with pull stroke. Aim for cutting accuracy within ±2mm.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 3 / 20

    Tip

    • Cutting costs about 30-50 yen per cut; ordering all cuts costs around 1000 yen and reduces time from 30 minutes to instant.
    • Stack six identical shelf boards and cut together for best accuracy.

    Watch out

    • SPF lumber 19mm thick warps easily even with straight cuts; use guides to cut straight.
    • 4mm plywood bends during cutting if unsupported underneath, causing distortions.
  4. 4

Sanding All Parts (#120 to #240)

    ≈ 40 min

Sand all parts starting with #120 grit followed by #240 grit. Pay special attention to shelf support surfaces on side boards, top and bottom surfaces of shelf boards, and edges (cut ends). Round edges of shelves slightly to improve handling. Vacuum all wood dust completely after sanding.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 4 / 20

    Tip

    • Finishing shelf surfaces silky smooth helps smooth book placement and removal.
    • Edges (cut ends) have raised fibers, so sand carefully starting with #120 grit.

    Watch out

    • SPF lumber is soft; excessive sanding alters dimensions. Use #120 mainly; #240 only for finishing.
    • Rounding edges too much looks bulky; keep approximately 2mm radius.
  5. 5

Marking Shelf Positions on Side Boards

    ≈ 15 min

Place two side boards side by side and mark six shelf positions in pencil. Use shelf spacing of 300mm intervals from bottom for six shelves (total 1800mm) or adjust spacing for decorative top shelves. Clamp the two boards together and mark simultaneously to ensure identical positioning.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 5 / 20

    Tip

    • Clamp both side boards together before marking to ensure shelf positions match exactly.
    • Use dimensions like A4 (297mm height), A5 (210mm), and bunko (150mm) books as guides for shelf spacing.

    Watch out

    • Mismatched shelf positions cause shelves to sit crooked; simultaneous marking is critical.
    • Forgetting the shelf board thickness of 19mm when calculating spacing results in narrower actual gaps.
  6. 6

    Preparing Pilot Holes

    ≈ 20 min

Drill 3mm diameter pilot holes at marked positions. Drill from the outside of side boards toward shelf board edges, so holes penetrate side boards through to shelf boards. Use masking tape on drill bit as a depth guide to achieve 29mm total depth (19mm through side board plus 10mm into shelf board).

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 6 / 20

    Tip

    • 3mm pilot hole diameter is about 70% of the 4.2mm coarse-thread screw shaft, preventing wood splitting effectively.
    • Each shelf requires 2 pilot holes on each side board edge: 6 shelves × 4 holes = 24 pilot holes; verify none are missed.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient pilot hole depth hinders screw insertion; drill slightly deeper for safety.
    • Avoid drilling through-shelf board completely by limiting depth with tape on bit.
  7. 7

Temporarily Fixing Shelf Boards to One Side Board

    ≈ 20 min

Lay one side board flat and position six shelf boards upright aligned to marked positions. Temporarily clamp each shelf board with F-type clamps, checking right angles with a carpenter's square. Where the square can't fit, confirm alignment visually.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 20

    Tip

    • Start clamping shelves from the bottom up for better stability.
    • One clamp per shelf board is ideal; six clamps make the process smoother, but two clamps can be used sequentially if fewer clamps are available.

    Watch out

    • Fixing while out of right angle causes the entire cabinet to become a parallelogram; always check with carpenter's square.
    • If shelf boards protrude beyond side board edges, the back panel cannot be installed properly.
  8. 8

    Screwing on One Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes from the outside of the side board into shelf board edges. Use two screws per shelf attachment point, totaling twelve screws for six shelves. Set screw heads flush or slightly recessed (within 0.5mm) with side board surface. Use medium torque on impact driver, and finish tightening by hand about a quarter turn.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 8 / 20

    Tip

    • Offset two screws slightly vertically to increase withdrawal strength.
    • If screw heads remain visible, optionally fill holes later with wood dowel plugs.

    Watch out

    • Over-tightening screws splits the 19mm thick SPF lumber ends; stop tightening at medium torque.
    • Screws driven at an angle may protrude from the opposite side; remove, fill with wood putty, and re-screw in a new spot.
  9. 9

Preparing to Attach Opposite Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Stand the side board with shelf boards fixed and fit the other side board on the opposite side, aligning its marks to shelf board ends. Temporarily clamp in place. While holding the entire assembly upright, check for right angles.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 9 / 20

    Tip

    • Two-person operation is recommended: one to hold and another to clamp for accuracy.
    • The marks on the opposite side board were made earlier; do not re-mark.

    Watch out

    • Attempting this alone risks shelves detaching and dropping to the floor; always work with two people or support against a wall.
  10. 10

Screwing on the Opposite Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes from the outside of the opposite side board into shelf board edges. Use two screws per shelf position, six shelves, totaling twelve screws. This completes the main structure fastening of the bookshelf.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 10 / 20

    Tip

    • After fastening both sides, check each shelf's level with a level. If any shelf is uneven, loosen screws, adjust, then re-tighten.

    Watch out

    • Driving screws on both sides simultaneously can cause warping; complete all screws on one side before proceeding to the other.
  11. 11

Checking Overall Level and Diagonal Measurements

    ≈ 15 min

Place assembled bookshelf on the floor and verify each shelf’s level with a level. From the front, measure the diagonals (top-left to bottom-right and top-right to bottom-left). Confirm differences are within 5mm. If distorted, loosen clamps, adjust, and add screws to fix.

    Check level
    Level ✓
    LevelSTEP 11 / 20

    Tip

    • A diagonal difference over 5mm indicates a parallelogram shape; correct before installing the back panel.
    • Shelves sagging in the center worsens under the weight of books. Shelf length of 600mm is acceptable; longer than 1000mm may require reinforcement.

    Watch out

    • Shelf sagging reduces usability and lifespan; consider design reinforcement if needed.
  12. 12

    Preparing to Attach Back Panel

    ≈ 10 min

Place 4mm plywood back panel against bookshelf rear. Align corners and confirm diagonals match the bookshelf to finalize position. Secure temporarily with masking tape. The back panel helps correct minor frame distortions.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 12 / 20

    Tip

    • Back panel is critical for structural rigidity; attaching it crookedly reduces strength.
    • Use a stapler easily or pre-drill pilot holes if using small nails.

    Watch out

    • If back panel exceeds bookshelf dimensions, trim protruding parts; if smaller, maintain an even gap of up to 5mm around edges.
  13. 13

    Stapling Back Panel

    ≈ 20 min

Attach back panel to side boards and shelf boards using a stapler (15mm staples) or small nails. Space staples 100-150mm apart, including along the perimeter and shelf positions. Start from corners then work along diagonals to reduce warping.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 13 / 20

    Tip

    • Stapler costs around 1500-2500 yen at home centers and speeds installation compared to nails; worth investing for bookshelf building.
    • Mark shelf positions on back panel with pencil beforehand to prevent missed fastening.

    Watch out

    • Staples that penetrate inside may damage books; 15mm staples are appropriate for 19mm thickness.
    • Stapling only along four sides without shelf positions causes panel to bow and lift eventually.
  14. 14

    Preparing to Attach L-Brackets

    ≈ 15 min

Plan to install four 50mm L-brackets on the bookshelf’s upper rear: two per side. One side attaches to bookshelf top edge, the other side fastens to wall studs. Use a stud finder to locate wall studs before installation.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 14 / 20

    Tip

    • Cheaper stud finders have low accuracy; home center quality devices (1000-2000 yen) are recommended.
    • Wall studs are typically spaced at 455mm increments; after locating one, estimating adjacent studs is easier.

    Watch out

    • If only drywall is present without studs, screws won’t hold and won’t prevent tipping.
    • If L-bracket positions don’t align with studs, adjust bracket left or right to center screws on studs.
  15. 15

    Attaching L-Brackets to Bookshelf

    ≈ 10 min

Attach four L-brackets to the bookshelf’s upper side board exteriors. Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws into bracket holes. Fix brackets flush or with up to 5mm gap from side boards, orienting brackets perpendicular to the wall.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 15 / 20

    Tip

    • Ensure bracket bend faces the wall, and screw holes face the bookshelf side when installing.

    Watch out

    • Mounting brackets crooked causes gaps between bracket and wall during installation; check flatness with a level.
  16. 16

    Placing Bookshelf and Wall Attachment

    ≈ 20 min

With two people, move bookshelf to designated place and stand it upright. Push it tightly against the wall, then drive 45-50mm coarse-thread screws through L-bracket wall holes into studs (using supplied or appropriate screws). Secure all four points to complete tipping prevention.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 16 / 20

    Tip

    • Use longer screws (45-50mm) for wall attachment to reach studs; 38mm screws are too short.
    • Wall fastening is the most critical step; neglect may cause injuries or worse in earthquakes.

    Watch out

    • Drywall anchors alone lack strength; always fasten directly into studs.
    • If gaps larger than 5mm exist between bookshelf and wall, insert shims before fastening; leaving gaps reduces bracket effectiveness.
  17. 17

    Cleaning Before Painting

    ≈ 10 min

Vacuum and wipe entire bookshelf with a dry cloth to remove all wood dust, oils, and fingerprints. Good cleanliness before finishing greatly affects final appearance. Mask the plywood back panel as it absorbs finishes quickly (optional).

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 17 / 20

    Tip

    • Perform a three-step wipe before finishing: dry wipe, damp wipe, then dry wipe again for best results.

    Watch out

    • Remaining wood dust causes roughness on finish; check with bright light.
  18. 18

First Coat of Oil Stain Application

    ≈ 40 min

Apply oil stain (e.g., Watco Oil or Kinura) evenly over entire bookshelf with a brush. Sequence: outside of side boards, shelf board tops, shelf board undersides, then back panel. After 10-15 minutes, wipe off excess with a dry cloth. Use 60-70% of total amount for the first coat as absorption is high.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 18 / 20

    Tip

    • Apply oil stain, wait 10-15 minutes, then wipe off excess; failing to wipe leaves sticky residue.
    • A 30-50mm wide brush is ideal for bookshelves; wider brushes miss small areas.

    Watch out

    • Skipping wiping leaves stickiness for over a week; always wipe.
    • Plywood back panel absorbs quickly and blotches easily; thin coating and careful wiping needed.
  19. 19

    Second Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 25 min

After the first coat dries for 24 hours, apply the second coat with 1/3 to 1/2 the amount of the first. Also wipe off excess. Two coats deepen color and enhance protection. Allow 24-48 hours for complete drying.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 19 / 20

    Tip

    • Second coat evens color irregularities from first coat; apply thinly and uniformly.
    • Add a third coat if deeper color is desired.

    Watch out

    • Forgetting to wipe second coat causes blotchy finish.
    • During drying, protect from dust and insects indoors.
  20. 20

    Completion, Usage Start, and Inspection

    ≈ 15 min

After full drying (48 hours), place books and begin use. Arrange heavy books on lower shelves and lighter ones higher for stability. After one week of use, recheck screw tightness and L-bracket fixation; retighten if needed.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 20 / 20

    Tip

    • Concentrate heavy books (e.g., encyclopedias) on bottom two shelves; place paperbacks and single volumes on upper shelves to reduce weight.
    • Recoating with oil every 3-5 years restores gloss and protection.

    Watch out

    • Placing books immediately after finishing risks oil transfer; always wait 48+ hours.
    • Books absorb moisture; use dehumidifiers during rainy season to prevent shelf warping.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
