Final Confirmation of Materials and Tools
≈ 15 minPrepare two side panels made of SPF lumber 1x10 (19×300×1200mm), six shelf boards (19×300×600mm), one 4mm plywood back panel (600×1200mm), 32 coarse-thread screws (38mm), four L-brackets (50mm). For tools, have an electric driver, saw, measuring tape, carpenter’s square, #120 and #240 sandpapers, level, two F-clamps, brush and paint tray, and a stapler or fine nails ready.
MeasureW 600 mmMeasureSTEP 1 / 20Tip
- SPF lumber tends to warp. Inspect each board visually at purchase, select those with warp less than 1mm.
- L-brackets and screws are critical for preventing tipping. Do not omit them.
Watch out
- Inspect each SPF board for warping, cracks, and knots before purchasing. Using boards warped over 1mm can cause shelf boards to warp.
- The 4mm plywood back panel is thin and easily breaks when moved. After cutting, store it standing upright immediately.
- 2
Securing the Workspace
≈ 10 minSecure a workspace where a 1200mm tall bookshelf can be erected for working. A ceiling height of 2200mm or more and a floor area around 1500×1200mm is sufficient. Lay down a blue sheet and place two saw horses to support long pieces.
InspectNo wobble ✓InspectSTEP 2 / 20Tip
- Assemble the bookshelf lying on the floor; stand it up only at the final step. This allows assembly even in small rooms.
Watch out
- The assembled bookshelf is difficult to stand upright alone. Two-person work is safer.
- If ceiling height is below 2000mm, the bookshelf may hit the ceiling when standing up. Check in advance.
- 3
Creating the Cut List and Requesting Cuts
≈ 20 minSubmit a cut list to the home center: two side panels at 1200mm, six shelf boards at 600mm each, and one back panel at 600×1200mm. If cutting by yourself, support long pieces (1200mm) on two saw horses and cut with a push cut method. Aim for a cutting tolerance within ±2mm.
CutUse the in-store cut serviceCutSTEP 3 / 20Tip
- Cutting costs about 30-50 yen per cut. Having all cuts done totals around 1000 yen but reduces time from 30 minutes to immediate.
- Since the shelf boards are all the same size, bundling them for one cut yields the best accuracy.
Watch out
- SPF lumber of 19mm thickness warps easily even when cutting straight. Use guides to ensure straight cuts.
- 4mm plywood is soft and will warp if not supported from underneath during cutting.
- 4
Sanding All Components (#120 then #240)
≈ 40 minSand all components first with #120 grit then #240 grit sandpaper. Pay special attention to the shelf support surfaces of the side panels, both surfaces of shelf boards, and the ends (cut edges). Rounding the shelf edges improves handling. After sanding, clean all wood dust thoroughly with a vacuum.
Sand#120SandSTEP 4 / 20Tip
- Smooth shelf board surfaces help books slide in and out easily.
- Cut edges often raise fibers, so start sanding with #120 grit especially carefully.
Watch out
- SPF lumber is soft; sanding too much can alter dimensions. Use #120 for main sanding, #240 only for finishing.
- Over-rounding corners can look clumsy; keep edge radius around 2mm.
- 5
Marking Shelf Positions on Side Panels
≈ 15 minPlace both side panels side by side and mark the positions for six shelves with a pencil. Shelf spacing is 300mm for each of six levels from the bottom (using a total of 1800mm), or adjust per design with wider top shelves for display. Ensure that the two side panels’ marks exactly align by marking them together side by side.
Mark a lineUse a try squareMarkSTEP 5 / 20Tip
- Clamp the two side panels together before marking to ensure shelf positions exactly match on both sides.
- Use typical book heights such as A4 (297mm), A5 (210mm), and paperback (150mm) to decide shelf spacing for easier storage.
Watch out
- If shelf positions on left and right side panels do not align, shelves will skew. Mark both at once with clamping to prevent this.
- Forgeting the 19mm shelf board thickness when calculating spacing makes actual space narrower than intended.
- 6
Preparing Pilot Holes
≈ 20 minDrill 3mm diameter pilot holes at all marked positions. Drill from the outside of the side panels toward the ends of the shelf boards, so the pilot holes go through the side panels from outside to inside. Mark depth with masking tape aiming to pierce through the 19mm side panel plus 10mm into the shelf board for a total depth of 29mm.
Drill a hole下穴 φ3.5mmDrillSTEP 6 / 20Tip
- 3mm pilot holes equal about 70% of the diameter of 38mm coarse-thread screws (4.2mm shaft), which effectively prevents wood splitting.
- Each shelf requires two pilot holes on each side panel (left and right), so for six shelves: 6×4=24 holes total. Double-check to avoid missing any.
Watch out
- If pilot holes are too shallow, screws won’t reach fully in. Drill slightly deeper than the theoretical depth for safety.
- Avoid drilling through the entire shelf board on the inside by using tape markers to control depth.
- 7
Temporary Fixing of Shelf Boards to One Side Panel
≈ 20 minLay one side panel flat on the floor and stand the six shelf boards upright at their marked positions. Use F-clamps to temporarily fix them. Check with a carpenter’s square that the side panel and shelf boards are at right angles. Where the square doesn’t fit, verify alignment visually.
Build the frameCheck for squareAssembleSTEP 7 / 20Tip
- Stand shelves starting from the bottom for stability.
- Ideally use one clamp per shelf board (6 clamps total). If only 2 clamps are available, proceed stepwise.
Watch out
- Fixing with angles off results in a parallelogram shape. Always check right angles with a square.
- If shelf boards extend beyond the edge of side panels, the back panel can’t be installed later.
- 8
Screwing to One Side Panel
≈ 15 minDrive 38mm coarse-thread screws through the pilot holes from the outside of the side panels into the ends of the shelf boards. Use two screws per attachment point, totaling 12 screws for six levels. Screw heads should be flush with or recessed up to 0.5mm under the side panel surface. Set the impact driver torque medium; finish tightening by hand for a 1/4 turn.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 8 / 20Tip
- Offset the two screws slightly up and down to increase withdrawal strength.
- If screw heads are visible, optionally fill holes with wooden dowels later.
Watch out
- Over-tightening screws in 19mm SPF lumber can split the wood ends; use medium torque.
- If a screw drives in at an angle and protrudes through the opposite side, remove it, fill with wood filler, and reposition the screw elsewhere.
- 9
Preparing to Attach Opposite Side Panel
≈ 15 minStand the side panel attached to shelves upright. Align the opposite side panel’s markings with the opposite ends of shelf boards. Use clamps to temporarily fix in place. Confirm right angles while the assembly is upright.
Build the frameCheck for squareAssembleSTEP 9 / 20Tip
- Two-person work is recommended. One supports while the other clamps for precise alignment.
- Do not newly mark the opposite side panel; the markings were prepared at the start.
Watch out
- Forceful solo work may dislodge shelves and cause damage. Always have two people or lean the assembly against a wall during this step.
- 10
Screwing to the Opposite Side Panel
≈ 15 minFrom the outside of the opposite side panel, drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through the pilot holes into the shelf ends. Two screws per point, 12 screws total for six shelves. This completes fixing shelf boards between both side panels and completes the main structure of the bookshelf.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 10 / 20Tip
- After fixing both sides, use a level to check each shelf for levelness. If any shelf is tilted, loosen and adjust before re-tightening.
Watch out
- Do not screw both sides simultaneously as this causes distortion. Fully screw one side before the other.
- 11
Checking Overall Level and Diagonal Measurements
≈ 15 minPlace the assembled bookshelf on the floor. Check each shelf with a level for horizontal alignment. Measure diagonals from top-left to bottom-right and top-right to bottom-left front-facing, confirming the difference is within 5mm. If distorted, loosen clamps to adjust, then add screws to secure.
Check levelLevel ✓LevelSTEP 11 / 20Tip
- A diagonal difference over 5mm indicates a parallelogram shape. Correct before installing the back panel.
- The bookshelf’s back panel improves rigidity; fix distortions prior to installing it.
Watch out
- Shelf sagging (center bottom depression) worsens under heavy books. With 600mm shelf length as designed, this is acceptable; for shelves over 1000mm consider reinforcement.
- 12
Preparing Back Panel Installation
≈ 10 minAlign the 4mm plywood back panel (600×1200mm) on the bookshelf’s rear. Match all four corners and confirm the diagonals correspond with the bookshelf’s frame (attaching the back panel corrects final distortions). Once positioned, temporarily fix the back panel with masking tape.
Build the frameCheck for squareAssembleSTEP 12 / 20Tip
- The back panel is an essential component for preventing distortions. Slight misalignment reduces rigidity.
- The 4mm plywood can be easily fixed with a stapler. When using fine nails, pre-drill pilot holes.
Watch out
- If the back panel is oversized, trim the excess; if smaller, keep an even gap of no more than 5mm around edges.
- 13
Securing the Back Panel with Staples
≈ 20 minAttach the back panel to side panels and shelves using a stapler with approximately 15mm staples, or fine nails. Space staples/nails every 100-150mm, along all edges and on shelf board locations. Start fixing corners and proceed along diagonals to minimize distortions.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 13 / 20Tip
- Staplers cost about 1500-2500 yen at home centers and speed the work compared to nails. For bookshelf assembly, they’re a worthwhile investment.
- Mark shelf board positions with pencil on the back panel before fixing to avoid missing attachment points.
Watch out
- Staples protruding into the interior can damage books; 15mm length staples are appropriate for 19mm lumber.
- Stapling only around the back panel edges and shelf board positions prevents the back panel from bulging if shelves sag.
- 14
Preparing L-bracket Installation
≈ 15 minPlan to attach four L-brackets (50mm) at the upper back left and right — two on each side. One flange attaches to the bookshelf top edge, the other to the wall. Use a stud finder to locate wall studs beforehand.
Fix to the wallAnchor to studsWall mountSTEP 14 / 20Tip
- Low-cost stud finders from 100 yen shops have low accuracy; recommend higher-quality ones (1000-2000 yen).
- Studs generally are spaced at 455mm; finding one makes locating others easier.
Watch out
- If screws are fixed only to drywall, they won’t prevent tipping. Always screw into studs.
- If L-bracket location doesn’t align with studs, shift the bracket sideways so screws hit the center of studs.
- 15
Attaching L-brackets to Bookshelf Side Panels
≈ 10 minAffix all four L-brackets to the upper outside edges of the bookshelf side panels. Use 38mm coarse-thread screws in the bracket’s pre-drilled holes. Secure the bracket flush with or offset no more than 5mm from the side panel, oriented so the bent flange faces the wall vertically when mounted.
Drive screwsコーススレッド 51mmScrewSTEP 15 / 20Tip
- Orient L-brackets carefully so the bent flange faces the wall side and screw holes face the bookshelf.
Watch out
- If brackets are angled, gaps appear between bracket and wall when mounting. Use a level to verify correct alignment.
- 16
Installing the Bookshelf and Wall Attachment
≈ 20 minCarry and set the bookshelf at its final location (two people recommended). Place it flush against the wall. Drive 45-50mm coarse-thread screws through the L-brackets’ wall-side holes into studs (using supplied or separate screws). Secure all four locations to complete tipping prevention.
Fix to the wallAnchor to studsWall mountSTEP 16 / 20Tip
- Use longer screws (45-50mm) for wall attachment to reach studs; 38mm screws are too short.
- Fixing to the wall is the most critical step to prevent injury or crushing in earthquakes; do not skimp.
Watch out
- Using only drywall anchors lacks sufficient strength. Always screw into studs.
- If there is a gap over 5mm between bookshelf and wall, insert shims before fixing; otherwise brackets won’t be effective.
- 17
Cleaning Before Finishing
≈ 10 minClean the entire bookshelf thoroughly with a vacuum and dry cloth, removing all wood dust, oils, and fingerprints. The cleanliness before finishing greatly affects the final finish quality. Optionally mask the plywood back panel before finishing because it absorbs finish quickly.
InspectNo wobble ✓InspectSTEP 17 / 20Tip
- Cleaning with dry wipe, then damp wipe, then dry wipe again achieves the best results before finishing.
Watch out
- Residual wood dust causes roughness in finish surfaces. Check under lighting for dust.
- 18
First Coat of Oil Stain
≈ 40 minApply oil stain (such as Watco Oil or Kinura) evenly with a brush. Apply in the order: outside of side panels, upper surfaces of shelf boards, undersides of shelf boards, then back panel. After 10-15 minutes, wipe excess oil off with a dry cloth. Use about 60-70% of the total amount for this first application.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 18 / 20Tip
- Apply oil stain, wait 10-15 minutes, then wipe: these steps prevent sticky residue.
- A brush width of 30-50mm is ideal for bookshelf surfaces; too wide misses details.
Watch out
- Failure to wipe off excess oil leaves tackiness for over a week.
- Plywood back panel absorbs oil quickly and can blotch; apply thinly and wipe carefully.
- 19
Second Coat of Oil Stain
≈ 25 minAfter 24 hours drying from the first coat, apply a second oil stain coat. Use about one third to half the amount from the first coat. Remember to wipe off excess again. Two coats deepen color and enhance protection. Allow 24-48 hours for full drying.
PaintWatco oil / varnishPaintSTEP 19 / 20Tip
- The second coat corrects color unevenness from the first coat. Apply uniformly thin.
- For a darker color, a third coat can be added.
Watch out
- Do not neglect wiping off excess for the second coat. Thick application causes blotches.
- During drying, keep the bookshelf indoors to avoid dust or insects adhering.
- 20
Completion, Use Start, and Inspection
≈ 15 minAfter complete drying (48 hours), place books and begin use. Heavy books should be on the bottom shelves and lighter books above for better balance and stability. After one week of use, recheck screws and L-bracket fixation, tightening as necessary.
Done!Done — nice work!DoneSTEP 20 / 20Tip
- Concentrate heavy books (encyclopedias and similar) on the bottom two shelves; use paperbacks and light books above.
- Reapply oil every 3-5 years to restore gloss and protection.
Watch out
- Using the bookshelf immediately after finishing risks oil transfer to books; allow at least 48 hours drying.
- Books absorb moisture; place dehumidifiers in humid seasons. Moisture can cause shelf boards to warp.
Warnings
- ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
