Build steps

  1. 1

Final confirmation of components and tools

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare 2 side boards of SPF lumber 1x8 (19×200×40mm), 6 shelf boards (19×200×800mm), 1 plywood back board (4mm, 800×40mm), 16 coarse-thread screws 38mm, and 4 L-shaped brackets 50mm. Tools include electric driver, saw, measuring tape, carpenter's square, #120/#240 sandpaper, level, 2 F-clamps, brush and paint tray, and a tacker or small nails.

    Measure
    W 800 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 20

    Tip

    • SPF lumber tends to warp. Check each piece visually when purchasing and select pieces with warp within 1mm.
    • L-shaped brackets and screws are essential lifelines for tipping prevention. Do not omit them.

    Watch out

    • Check each SPF piece for warping, cracks, and knots before purchase. Joining lumber warped over 1mm causes shelf distortion.
    • 4mm plywood back board is thin and fragile; after cutting, store upright to avoid bending or breaking.
  2. 2

    Securing workspace

    ≈ 10 min

Secure a workspace where the bookshelf stands 40mm high. Ceiling height over 2200mm and floor space around 1500×1200mm provide sufficient room. Lay a blue sheet and support long materials on two sawhorses.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 2 / 20

    Tip

    • Assemble lying on the floor; raising it upright is the final step. Narrow rooms are also workable.

    Watch out

    • One person has difficulty raising assembled bookshelf; two people recommended for safety.
    • If ceiling height is below 2000mm, the bookshelf may hit the ceiling when standing up. Confirm in advance.
  3. 3

Creating cut list and requesting cuts

    ≈ 20 min

Submit a cut list to the home center: 2 side boards (40mm length), 6 shelf boards (800mm), and one back board (800×40mm). If cutting yourself, support the 40mm length boards on two sawhorses and perform pull cuts. Aim for cut tolerance within ±2mm.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 3 / 20

    Tip

    • Cut cost is 30-50 yen per cut; full cut service costs around 1000 yen, reducing time from 30 minutes to immediate.
    • Bundle the 6 shelf boards, same size, for a single accurate cut.

    Watch out

    • 19mm thick SPF lumber warps easily even with straight cuts; use guides for straight cuts.
    • 4mm plywood is soft and bends if unsupported from below during cutting.
  4. 4

Sanding all components (#120 then #240)

    ≈ 40 min

Sand all components with #120 then #240 sandpaper. Pay special attention to the shelf board support surface on side boards, the top and bottom surfaces of shelf boards, and the wood ends. Rounding shelf edges that are touched improves handling. Clean all wood dust after sanding with a vacuum.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 4 / 20

    Tip

    • Sanding shelf board surfaces smooth facilitates smooth insertion and removal of books.
    • Wood ends (cut faces) have raised fibers; start sanding carefully from #120.

    Watch out

    • SPF is soft; over-sanding alters dimensions. Use #120 primarily; #240 only for finishing.
    • Excessive rounding (about R2mm recommended) makes appearance bulky.
  5. 5

Marking shelf positions on side boards

    ≈ 15 min

Place the 2 side boards side by side, mark screw positions for the 6 shelf boards in pencil. Shelf spacing can be 300mm per shelf from bottom upwards (total 1800mm) or larger top gaps for display per design. Clamp the two side boards together and mark simultaneously to align shelf positions exactly.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 5 / 20

    Tip

    • Clamp both side boards before marking to ensure shelf positions match perfectly.
    • Use standard book heights such as A4 (297mm), A5 (210mm), bunko (150mm) to decide spacing for convenient storage.

    Watch out

    • Misaligned shelf positions on left and right cause tilted shelves; marking together is mandatory.
    • Counting shelf spacing without adding shelf thickness (19mm) results in narrower actual gap.
  6. 6

    Preparing pilot holes

    ≈ 20 min

Drill φ3mm pilot holes at marked positions. Drill from side board outer face through to shelf board end grain, penetrating the side board thickness (19mm) plus 10mm into the shelf board (total 29mm). Mark depth with masking tape on drill bit.

    Drill a hole
    φ3mm
    DrillSTEP 6 / 20

    Tip

    • φ3mm pilot hole is about 70% of 4.2mm coarse-thread screw shaft diameter, preventing wood splitting reliably.
    • Each shelf requires 2 pilot holes on each side board = 6 shelves × 4 screws = 24 pilot holes; check no holes omitted.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient hole depth prevents screws from seating fully; drill slightly deeper for safety.
    • Avoid drill bit extending too far and breaking through opposite side; use tape for depth control.
  7. 7

Temporary fixing shelf boards to one side board

    ≈ 20 min

Lay one side board flat on the floor, stand the 6 shelf boards on marked positions, and clamp preliminarily with F-clamps. Confirm side board and shelf boards are at right angles with a carpenter's square, visually check where square cannot reach.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 20

    Tip

    • Install shelves from bottom up for stability.
    • Ideally use one clamp per shelf board (6 total); if fewer, proceed sequentially.

    Watch out

    • Fixing with angles off causes parallelogram distortion; always verify right angles.
    • Shelf boards protruding beyond side board edges prevent back board installation.
  8. 8

    Screwing on one side

    ≈ 15 min

Using pilot holes, drive 38mm coarse-thread screws from side board outer face into shelf board end grain, 2 screws per shelf position (12 screws total). Countersink screw heads flush or 0.5mm below side board surface. Use moderate torque on impact driver; final tightening by hand 1/4 turn.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 8 / 20

    Tip

    • Offset the 2 screws vertically for better withdrawal strength.
    • If screw head holes are visible, optionally fill later with wood dowels.

    Watch out

    • Over-tightening screws can split 19mm SPF end grain; moderate torque required.
    • Angled screws protruding through shelf require removal, putty filling, and re-drilling elsewhere.
  9. 9

Preparing to install opposite side board

    ≈ 15 min

Stand the partly fixed shelf assembly and position the other side board on the open shelf ends aligned with marked lines. Temporarily clamp. Confirm right angles with assembly standing upright.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 9 / 20

    Tip

    • Two-person operation recommended: one to support, another to clamp for accuracy.
    • Opposite side board marking lines should be pre-marked; do not re-mark.

    Watch out

    • Attempting alone can cause shelves to drop; secure two people or lean against wall when working.
  10. 10

    Screwing the opposite side

    ≈ 15 min

From the opposite side board outer face, drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes: 2 screws per shelf per 6 shelves = 12 screws. This finalizes fixing both side boards and six shelf boards, completing main bookshelf frame.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 10 / 20

    Tip

    • After fixing both sides, check all shelf boards level with a level. Loosen and adjust if any tilt found.

    Watch out

    • Screwing both sides simultaneously causes distortion. Complete screws on one side before the other.
  11. 11

    Overall leveling and diagonal measurement

    ≈ 15 min

Place assembled bookshelf on floor, check each shelf with level. Measure diagonals (top left to bottom right and top right to bottom left) with measuring tape; difference must be within 5mm. If warped, loosen clamps and adjust, then re-tighten screws.

    Check level
    Level ✓
    LevelSTEP 11 / 20

    Tip

    • Diagonal difference over 5mm indicates parallelogram distortion. Correct before attaching back board.
    • Back board stiffens the frame; fix distortion before back board installation.

    Watch out

    • Shelf sagging worsens with heavy books. Lengths up to 600mm are acceptable; consider reinforcement if over 1000mm.
  12. 12

    Preparing back board installation

    ≈ 10 min

Place 4mm plywood back board (800×40mm) on bookshelf rear, align corners, confirm diagonals match bookshelf. Back board helps final distortion correction. Temporarily tape back board to frame with masking tape.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 12 / 20

    Tip

    • Back board suppresses distortion; slight angles reduce stiffness.
    • 4mm plywood can be easily fixed with a tacker; use pilot holes if nailing with small nails.

    Watch out

    • Trim any protruding edges if back board bigger than frame; if smaller, maintain even gaps within 5mm.
  13. 13

    Tacking back board

    ≈ 20 min

Attach back board to side and shelf boards using 15mm staples with a tacker or small nails. Space staples every 100-150mm around perimeter and over shelf board positions. Start tacking corners, then proceed along diagonals to reduce distortion.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 13 / 20

    Tip

    • Tacker costs 1500-2500 yen at home centers; faster than nails and worth investing for bookshelf making.
    • Mark shelf positions on back board in pencil before tacking to avoid missed fixing.

    Watch out

    • Staples penetrating through inside can damage books. 15mm length is appropriate for 19mm thickness.
    • Staple only along four edges and shelf positions; missing points cause back board to lift when bowed.
  14. 14

    Preparing L-shaped bracket installation

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare 4 L-shaped brackets (50mm), 2 for each upper back corner of bookshelf. Place one side on bookshelf top edge and the other on wall for fixation. Use a stud finder to locate wall studs beforehand.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 14 / 20

    Tip

    • 100 yen store stud finders tend to be inaccurate; recommend home center versions costing 1000-2000 yen.
    • Studs are generally spaced 455mm apart; once found, estimate positions of adjacent studs.

    Watch out

    • Drywall alone cannot hold screws, not effective against tipping. Always fix into studs.
    • Adjust bracket horizontally to align screws with stud centers if bracket positions differ from studs.
  15. 15

    Attaching L-shaped brackets to bookshelf

    ≈ 10 min

Attach all 4 L-shaped brackets to outer sides of bookshelf upper side boards using 38mm coarse-thread screws via provided holes. Fix brackets flush or within 5mm from side board surface, so bracket protrudes vertical to wall when mounted.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 15 / 20

    Tip

    • Mount L brackets with bent part facing wall and screw holes facing bookshelf side board.

    Watch out

    • If brackets are skewed, gaps form between bracket and wall during fixing; check with level.
  16. 16

    Installing bookshelf and wall fixing

    ≈ 20 min

Carry bookshelf to installation spot (two people advised), position flushed against wall. Drive 45-50mm coarse-thread screws into wall studs via bracket screw holes (use included or separate screws). Fix all 4 bracket points to complete tipping prevention.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 16 / 20

    Tip

    • 38mm screws are too short for wall fixing; use 45-50mm screws reaching stud.
    • Wall fixing is the most critical step to prevent injury or death during earthquakes; do not skip.

    Watch out

    • Drywall anchors alone have insufficient strength; always fix into studs.
    • Use shims if gaps more than 5mm exist between bookshelf and wall before fixing; loose brackets reduce effectiveness.
  17. 17

    Cleaning before finishing

    ≈ 10 min

Clean entire bookshelf with vacuum and dry cloth to completely remove wood dust, oil, and fingerprints. Cleaning quality greatly affects final finish. Mask back board before finishing as an option because plywood absorbs stain quickly.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 17 / 20

    Tip

    • Dry wiping → wet wiping → dry wiping in three steps thoroughly cleans surface before finishing.

    Watch out

    • Remaining wood dust causes rough finish; inspect with light for dust.
  18. 18

    First oil stain application

    ≈ 40 min

Apply oil stain (e.g., Watco Oil or Kinura) all over with brush: start from side board outer surfaces, shelf board top faces, shelf board undersides, then back board. After 10-15 minutes, wipe off excess with dry cloth. Use about 60-70% of total oil volume on this first coat.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 18 / 20

    Tip

    • Oil stain procedure: apply → 10-15 min wait → wipe off. Leaving residue causes stickiness.
    • Brush size 30-50mm width is optimal; too large cannot reach detail areas.

    Watch out

    • Forgetting to wipe leaves sticky surface for over a week. Always wipe off.
    • Plywood back board absorbs quickly and unevenly; apply thinly and wipe carefully.
  19. 19

    Second oil stain application

    ≈ 25 min

After 24-hour drying of first coat, apply second coat with 1/3 to 1/2 volume of first. Wipe off residue again. Two coats deepen color and improve protection. Full dry time is 24-48 hours.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 19 / 20

    Tip

    • Second coat evens out color irregularities from first coat; apply thinly and uniformly.
    • For darker color, a third coat may be added.

    Watch out

    • Do not forget wiping residue on second coat; thick layers cause unevenness.
    • Keep indoors away from dust and insects while drying.
  20. 20

    Completion, use start, and inspection

    ≈ 15 min

After full drying (48 hours), place books to begin use. Place heavy books on lower shelves, lighter ones above for stability. After one week of use, recheck screw looseness and L-bracket fixation; retighten if needed.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 20 / 20

    Tip

    • Concentrate heavy books (encyclopedias etc.) on the bottom two shelves.
    • Reapply oil every 3-5 years to restore sheen and protection.

    Watch out

    • Placing books immediately after finishing transfers oil to books; always wait 48+ hours.
    • Books absorb moisture; place dehumidifiers during rainy seasons. Bookshelf may warp from humidity.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
