Build steps

  1. 1

Final Check of Materials and Tools

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare two side boards of SPF lumber 1x10 (19×400×2000mm), six shelf boards (19×400×1500mm), one 4mm plywood back panel (1500×2000mm), forty-eight 38mm coarse-thread screws, and four 50mm L-brackets. Tools include electric screwdriver, handsaw, tape measure, carpenter's square, #120 and #240 sandpaper, level, two F-clamps, brush and paint tray, tackers or small nails.

    Measure
    W 1500 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 20

    Tip

    • SPF lumber tends to warp easily. Check each board visually at purchase and select boards with warping under 1mm.
    • L-brackets and screws are critical safety features to prevent tipping. Never omit them.

    Watch out

    • Check each SPF board for warping, cracking, and knots before purchase. Using boards warped over 1mm will distort the shelf boards.
    • The 4mm plywood back panel is thin and can easily break during handling. After cutting, store it standing up immediately.
  2. 2

    Securing the Workspace

    ≈ 10 min

Ensure a workspace that can accommodate a 2000mm tall bookshelf standing upright. Ceiling height should be at least 2200mm with floor space roughly 1500×1200mm. Lay a blue tarp and support long lumber on two sawhorses.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 2 / 20

    Tip

    • Assemble lying on the floor and stand up at the final step. Even small rooms can be used.

    Watch out

    • Standing the assembled bookshelf upright is difficult alone. Use two people for safety.
    • If ceiling height is under 2000mm, the bookshelf may hit the ceiling when standing up. Confirm beforehand.
  3. 3

Creating Cut List and Ordering Cuts

    ≈ 20 min

Submit a cut list to the home center for two side boards (2000mm), six shelf boards (1500mm), and one back panel (1500×2000mm). If cutting yourself, support long boards on two sawhorses and cut with a pull stroke. Aim for cutting accuracy within ±2mm.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 3 / 20

    Tip

    • Cutting costs are about 30-50 yen per cut; full-cut orders cost around 1000 yen but reduce time from 30 minutes to instant.
    • Shelf boards are all the same length, so bundling for a single cut increases accuracy.

    Watch out

    • Even straight cuts of 19mm thick SPF lumber are prone to warping. Use guides to cut straight.
    • 4mm plywood is soft and must be supported underneath during cutting to prevent distortion.
  4. 4

Sanding All Components (#120 then #240)

    ≈ 40 min

Sand all components first with #120 then #240 sandpaper. Pay special attention to shelf support faces on side boards, both surfaces of shelf boards, and cut ends. Rounding shelf edges where hands touch makes handling easier. Vacuum thoroughly after sanding to remove all dust.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 4 / 20

    Tip

    • Smooth shelf surfaces make book handling easier.
    • Cut ends (surfaces of cuts) have raised fibers and need careful sanding starting with #120.

    Watch out

    • SPF is soft; excessive sanding changes dimensions. Use #120 primarily and reserve #240 for finishing.
    • Rounding edges too much looks clumsy. Limit the radius to about 2mm.
  5. 5

Marking Shelf Positions on Side Boards

    ≈ 15 min

Place two side boards side by side and mark shelf positions for 6 shelves with pencil. Shelf intervals are usually 300mm from bottom upward (total 1800mm for 6 shelves), or wider spacing at the top for display. Clamp the two side boards together so shelf positions match exactly, and mark simultaneously.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 5 / 20

    Tip

    • Clamping side boards together before marking ensures exact alignment on both sides.
    • Use A4 (297mm height), A5 (210mm height), or bunko size (150mm height) as references when determining shelf spacing.

    Watch out

    • Misaligned shelf marks cause tilted shelves. Clamping and simultaneous marking is mandatory.
    • Forgeting to consider the 19mm shelf board thickness results in narrower actual spacing.
  6. 6

    Drilling Pilot Holes

    ≈ 20 min

Drill 3mm diameter pilot holes at the marked shelf positions. Drill from outside of side board inward toward the shelf board end grain, penetrating through the 19mm side board plus 10mm into the shelf board (total 29mm). Use masking tape on the drill bit to mark depth.

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 6 / 20

    Tip

    • 3mm pilot holes are about 70% of the 4.2mm coarse-thread screw diameter and prevent wood splitting.
    • Each shelf has 2 pilot holes per side board: 6 shelves × 4 holes = 24 holes total. Confirm no holes are missed.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient pilot hole depth prevents proper screw insertion. Drill slightly deeper for safety.
    • Avoid drilling all the way through the opposite side of the shelf board by limiting depth with tape on bit.
  7. 7

Temporarily Fixing Shelf Boards to One Side Board

    ≈ 20 min

Lay one side board flat on the floor and stand the six shelf boards at their marked positions. Temporarily fix with F-clamps. Use carpenter's square to confirm the side board and each shelf board are at right angles. Visually check spots where the square cannot fit.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 20

    Tip

    • Starting from the bottom shelf improves stability during assembly.
    • One clamp per shelf board is best; having six clamps makes work easier. If only two clamps are available, proceed step by step.

    Watch out

    • If right angles are off when fixed, the whole assembly becomes parallelogram-shaped. Always confirm with square.
    • If shelf boards extend beyond the side board edges, the back panel cannot be installed later.
  8. 8

    Screwing One Side Board Side

    ≈ 15 min

Insert two 38mm coarse-thread screws at each pilot hole, driving from outside side board into the shelf board ends—12 screws total. Screw heads should be flush or recessed 0.5mm. Set the electric screwdriver torque to medium, and tighten the final quarter turn by hand.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 8 / 20

    Tip

    • Offsetting the two screws slightly vertically increases withdrawal strength.
    • If screw holes are visible, you can later fill them with wooden dowel plugs (optional).

    Watch out

    • Over-tightening screws can split the 19mm thick SPF end grain. Use medium torque.
    • If screws go in crooked and protrude, remove, fill with wood putty, and re-screw in another position.
  9. 9

Preparing the Opposite Side Board Installation

    ≈ 15 min

Stand the assembly with one side fixed and align the second side board at the shelf boards' opposite ends on the marked position. Temporarily clamp. Confirm right angles while the whole frame is upright.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 9 / 20

    Tip

    • This step is best done with two people: one holding the assembly and one clamping for accuracy.
    • The opposite side board marks were made initially; do not re-mark.

    Watch out

    • Attempting this alone may result in shelves falling and breaking. Always use two people or support the assembly against a wall.
  10. 10

    Screwing the Opposite Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Drive two 38mm coarse-thread screws at each pilot hole from outside the opposite side board to complete fixing both side boards and shelf boards (12 screws). This completes the main structure of the bookshelf.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 10 / 20

    Tip

    • After fixing both sides, use a level to check shelf horizontals. If any shelf is tilted, loosen screws and adjust before re-tightening.

    Watch out

    • Screwing both sides simultaneously can cause distortion. Fix all screws on one side fully before proceeding to the other side.
  11. 11

    Checking Overall Level and Diagonals

    ≈ 15 min

Place the assembled bookshelf on the floor and check each shelf's level with a level tool. Measure front diagonal distances (top left to bottom right and top right to bottom left) with a tape measure and confirm difference is within 5mm. If distorted, loosen clamps, adjust, and add screws to fix.

    Check level
    Level ✓
    LevelSTEP 11 / 20

    Tip

    • Diagonal difference over 5mm indicates parallelogram shape; fix before attaching back panel.
    • Back panel adds rigidity; adjust distortions before attachment.

    Watch out

    • Shelf boards sagging in the middle worsens under books' weight. For shelf lengths of 600mm this is acceptable; shelves over 1000mm may need reinforcement consideration.
  12. 12

    Preparing to Attach Back Panel

    ≈ 10 min

Position the 4mm plywood back panel on the bookshelf back, aligning all four corners. Confirm diagonal measurements match the frame (attaching the panel allows final distortion corrections). Once positioned, lightly tape the back panel to the frame using painter's tape.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 12 / 20

    Tip

    • Back panel is critical for structural rigidity. If misaligned or slightly slanted, rigidity decreases.
    • 4mm plywood can be fastened easily with tacker staples; if using nails, pilot holes are recommended beforehand.

    Watch out

    • Back panel larger than frame must be trimmed at protruding edges. If smaller, leave uniform gap up to 5mm at edges.
  13. 13

Attaching Back Panel with Tacker Staples

    ≈ 20 min

Fasten the back panel to side boards and shelf boards with 15mm staples or small nails. Space staples/nails every 100-150mm around the panel edges and also at shelf board positions. Start fixing from corners and along diagonals sequentially to avoid distortion.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 13 / 20

    Tip

    • Tacker staplers cost around 1500-2500 yen at home centers and are much faster than nails; worthwhile investment for bookshelf making.
    • Mark shelf positions on the back panel in pencil before nailing to avoid missing fastening at shelf locations.

    Watch out

    • Staples protruding inside must be no longer than 15mm to avoid damaging books, given 19mm thick boards.
    • Only fastening edges and shelf positions prevents the back panel from sagging.
  14. 14

    Preparing L-Bracket Installation

    ≈ 15 min

Plan to install four 50mm L-brackets: two each on upper back left and right sides. One side fixes to bookshelf upper edge, the other will fix to wall studs. Use a stud finder to find wall stud positions.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 14 / 20

    Tip

    • Store-bought stud finders at 100 yen shops may have low accuracy; home center models (1000-2000 yen) are recommended.
    • Studs are typically spaced every 455mm; locating one makes finding adjacent studs easier.

    Watch out

    • If wall surface is only drywall (gypsum board), screws will not hold and tipping protection fails. Always screw into studs.
    • If bracket position doesn't align with wall studs, shift bracket slightly left or right to position screw holes on stud center.
  15. 15

    Attaching L-Brackets to Bookshelf

    ≈ 10 min

Attach four L-brackets on the bookshelf upper side board exterior using 38mm coarse-thread screws into the bracket's screw holes. Fasten brackets flush or within 5mm of the side board surface, positioning bracket edges to protrude perpendicularly for wall attachment.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 15 / 20

    Tip

    • Install L-brackets oriented so the bent side is toward the wall and the screw holes toward the bookshelf side.

    Watch out

    • If brackets are installed crookedly, gaps between bracket and wall occur during fixing. Check with a level.
  16. 16

Placing Bookshelf and Fixing to Wall

    ≈ 20 min

Move the bookshelf to the installation location with two people. Push it flush to the wall and fasten the wall side of L-brackets to wall studs with 45-50mm coarse-thread screws (either included or separately purchased). Secure all four points to complete tipping prevention.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 16 / 20

    Tip

    • Use screws longer than 38mm for wall fixing; 45-50mm needed to penetrate studs.
    • Wall fixing is the most critical step to prevent injury or fatal accident during earthquakes; do not skip.

    Watch out

    • Drywall anchors alone are not strong enough; screws must go into studs.
    • If gap between wall and bookshelf exceeds 5mm, shim the gap before fixing. Fixing with gap renders bracket ineffective.
  17. 17

    Cleaning Before Painting

    ≈ 10 min

Clean the entire bookshelf with vacuum cleaner and dry cloth to remove wood dust, oils, and fingerprints completely. Quality of cleaning before painting significantly affects finish. Mask back panel before painting to prevent excessive absorption (optional).

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 17 / 20

    Tip

    • Wipe drying process before painting should be done in three steps: dry wipe → wet wipe → dry wipe again for perfect cleaning.

    Watch out

    • Remaining dust causes roughness in paint surface. Check with lighting to confirm absence of dust.
  18. 18

Applying First Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 40 min

Brush oil stain (e.g. Watco Oil, Kinura) over entire surface in this order: outside side boards → shelf board top surfaces → shelf board undersides → back panel. After 10–15 minutes, wipe off excess with clean cloth. Use 60-70% of total oil stain volume for the first application since absorption is high.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 18 / 20

    Tip

    • Oil stain process: apply → wait 10-15 minutes → wipe off excess. Without wiping, stickiness remains.
    • Use brushes 30-50mm wide; wider brushes can't reach small details well.

    Watch out

    • Failing to wipe excess results in stickiness lasting over a week. Always wipe off.
    • Plywood back panel absorbs oil quickly and may cause uneven coloration. Apply thinly and wipe carefully.
  19. 19

    Second Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 25 min

After 24 hours drying of first coat, apply second coat with 1/3 to 1/2 the amount used for first coat. Again, wipe off excess. Two coats deepen color and improve protection. Dry for 24–48 hours for complete cure.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 19 / 20

    Tip

    • Second coat corrects uneven coloration from first coat. Apply thin and evenly.
    • For deeper color, a third coat can be added.

    Watch out

    • Do not forget to wipe off excess on the second coat, as thick application causes unevenness.
    • During drying, keep indoors to avoid dust or insects settling on the finish.
  20. 20

    Completion, First Use, and Inspection

    ≈ 15 min

After the oil has completely dried (48 hours), place books and begin use. Arrange heavy books on lower shelves and lighter books on upper shelves for balance and stability. After one week of use, recheck screw tightness and L-bracket stability and retighten as necessary.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 20 / 20

    Tip

    • Place heavy books such as encyclopedias in the bottom two shelves. Use light paperbacks on upper shelves to reduce load.
    • Reapply oil stain every 3-5 years to restore gloss and protective effect.

    Watch out

    • Placing books immediately after finish transfer oil onto books. Always wait at least 48 hours drying.
    • Books absorb moisture, so use dehumidifiers during rainy seasons. Moisture can cause shelves to warp.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Always drill pilot holes before inserting screws to prevent wood splitting.
