Build steps

  1. 1

Final Check of Parts and Tools

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare two side boards (SPF lumber 1x8, 19×200×700mm), six shelf boards (19×200×600mm), one plywood back panel (4mm thick, 600×700mm), sixteen 38mm coarse-thread screws, and four 50mm L-shaped brackets. Tools include electric driver, saw, tape measure, carpenter's square, #120/#240 sandpaper, level, two F-type clamps, brush and paint tray, and a tacker or small nails.

    Measure
    W 600 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 20

    Tip

    • SPF lumber tends to warp; visually inspect each piece on purchase and select with warp less than 1mm.
    • L-shaped brackets and screws are essential safety features to prevent tipping; never omit them.

    Watch out

    • Check each SPF piece individually for warping, cracking, and knots; assembling with warp over 1mm causes shelf distortion.
    • The 4mm plywood back panel is thin and fragile; store it upright immediately after cutting to prevent breaking.
  2. 2

    Securing Workspace

    ≈ 10 min

Prepare a workspace where you can stand and work with the 700mm high bookshelf. Ceiling height should be at least 2200mm, floor space about 1500×1200mm is sufficient. Lay down a blue sheet and support the long pieces on two sawhorses.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 2 / 20

    Tip

    • Assemble the bookshelf lying on the floor; stand it upright only in the final step. Even small rooms are workable with this method.

    Watch out

    • Standing the assembled bookshelf upright alone is difficult; two people are advised for safety.
    • If ceiling height is below 2000mm, the bookshelf may hit the ceiling when standing up; confirm beforehand.
  3. 3

Cut List Preparation and Cutting Request

    ≈ 20 min

Submit a cutting list for two side boards (700mm), six shelf boards (600mm), and one back panel (600×700mm) to your home center. If cutting yourself, support the 700mm long pieces on two sawhorses and perform pull cuts. Aim for ±2mm cutting tolerance.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 3 / 20

    Tip

    • Cutting costs about 30-50 yen per cut; full cutting service costs roughly 1000 yen but saves about 30 minutes, done instantly.
    • Batch cutting the six shelf boards, since they are identical size, yields best accuracy.

    Watch out

    • SPF lumber at 19mm thickness warps easily even with straight cuts; use guides for straight cuts.
    • 4mm plywood is soft and will bend when cutting unless fully supported underneath.
  4. 4

Sanding All Components (#120 then #240)

    ≈ 40 min

Sand all parts starting with #120, then #240 sandpaper. Pay special attention to side board shelf support surfaces, shelf board top/bottom, and end grain. Rounding shelf edges by about R2mm eases handling. After sanding, vacuum all dust thoroughly.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 4 / 20

    Tip

    • A smooth shelf surface makes book placement easier.
    • End grain tends to raise fibers; sand carefully starting with #120.

    Watch out

    • SPF lumber is soft; excessive sanding alters dimensions. Use #120 mostly, #240 only for finishing.
    • Over-rounding edges leads to a bulky look; keep radius about 2mm.
  5. 5

Marking Shelf Positions on Side Boards

    ≈ 15 min

Place two side boards side by side and mark shelf positions with pencil for six shelves. Shelf spacing from bottom should be 300mm each (6 shelves use 1800mm total) or adjust per your design to have wider space on top for display. Clamp the two side boards together and mark simultaneously to ensure identical positions.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 5 / 20

    Tip

    • Clamping both side boards together before marking assures completely matching shelf positions.
    • Setting shelf intervals by standard book heights such as A4 (297mm), A5 (210mm), and pocket size (150mm) helps organized storage.

    Watch out

    • Shelf positions mismatched left to right cause shelves to install skewed; always mark both simultaneously clamped.
    • Ignoring the 19mm shelf board thickness when setting spacing will make the actual gaps narrower than expected.
  6. 6

    Preparing Pilot Holes

    ≈ 20 min

Drill 3mm diameter pilot holes at marked positions. Drill from the outside of the side board toward the shelf board end grain, passing through the 19mm side board and continuing 10mm into the shelf board (total depth about 29mm). Use masking tape on drill bit to mark depth for accuracy.

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 6 / 20

    Tip

    • A 3mm pilot hole equals about 70% of the 4.2mm coarse-thread screw diameter, effectively preventing wood splitting.
    • Each shelf has pilot holes at both left and right side boards with two screws each: 6 shelves × 4 screws = 24 holes total; ensure none are missed.

    Watch out

    • Insufficient pilot hole depth prevents screws being fully seated; drill slightly deeper for safety.
    • Avoid drilling through the opposite side of the shelf board by limiting drill depth with tape.
  7. 7

Temporary Fixing Shelf Boards to One Side Board

    ≈ 20 min

Lay one side board flat and position six shelf boards upright on marks. Temporarily clamp each shelf with an F clamp and verify right angles between side board and shelf board using a carpenter's square. Where the square does not fit, confirm visually.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 20

    Tip

    • Start assembling from the lower shelf up; this provides better stability.
    • Ideally, use one clamp per shelf board (6 clamps total) for smooth work; if limited, use two clamps and proceed sequentially.

    Watch out

    • Fixing in a skewed right angle results in a parallelogram structure; always check with carpenter's square.
    • If shelf boards extend beyond side board edges, back panel installation becomes impossible.
  8. 8

    Screwing One Side

    ≈ 15 min

Drive coarse-thread 38mm screws through pilot holes from the outside of the side board into the shelf board end grain. Use two screws per connection points (one position) for six shelves for a total of 12 screws. Screw heads should be flush or recessed about 0.5mm into the side board. Use medium torque on impact driver, finishing tightening by hand with a quarter turn.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 8 / 20

    Tip

    • Screws positioned slightly staggered vertically improve withdrawal strength.
    • If screw holes are noticeable, optionally fill later with wood plugs.

    Watch out

    • Over-tightening screws on 19mm thick soft SPF lumber can cause end grain splitting; use medium torque and stop.
    • If screws go in at an angle and protrude on the opposite side, remove and fill with wood filler, then re-screw at a safe position.
  9. 9

Preparing Installation of Opposite Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Stand up the partially assembled bookshelf and fit the other side board onto the opposite ends of the shelf boards, aligning the marks. Temporarily clamp in place. Check right angles ensuring the entire structure is vertical.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 9 / 20

    Tip

    • Two people is recommended for this step: one to hold and one to clamp for accuracy.
    • Opposite side board markings are made in advance; do not re-mark.

    Watch out

    • Trying to do this solo may drop shelves; always have two people or brace against a wall.
  10. 10

    Screwing the Opposite Side

    ≈ 15 min

Drive coarse-thread 38mm screws through pilot holes on the opposite side board similar to the first side: two screws per position, six shelves = 12 screws total. This completes the main structure fixing.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 10 / 20

    Tip

    • After both sides are fixed, verify the horizontal level of all shelves; loosen and adjust if any shelf is tilted.

    Watch out

    • Driving screws simultaneously on both sides causes distortion; complete all screws on one side before the other.
  11. 11

    Overall Level and Diagonal Check

    ≈ 15 min

Place the assembled frame on the floor and check each shelf with a level. Using a tape measure, measure diagonal distances from top left to bottom right and top right to bottom left, ensuring the difference is within 5mm. If skewed, loosen clamps to adjust, then re-fix with screws.

    Check level
    Level ✓
    LevelSTEP 11 / 20

    Tip

    • Diagonal differences greater than 5mm indicate a parallelogram error; correct before attaching back panel.
    • Back panel improves rigidity; correct distortions before installation.

    Watch out

    • Shelf bowing worsens under book weight; a shelf length of 600mm is acceptable, over 1000mm requires reinforcement consideration.
  12. 12

    Preparing Back Panel Installation

    ≈ 10 min

Place the 4mm plywood back panel (600×700mm) against the bookshelf rear, aligning all corners and confirming diagonal matches to correct final distortions. Lightly secure back panel to frame with masking tape.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 12 / 20

    Tip

    • Back panel is critical for distortion prevention; avoid installing it crooked.
    • Because 4mm plywood is thin, staple or gently fix it before full fastening.

    Watch out

    • If the back panel is larger than the bookshelf, trim excess. If smaller, maintain uniform gaps within 5mm around edges.
  13. 13

    Stapling Back Panel

    ≈ 20 min

Fasten back panel to side and shelf boards with a tacker (15mm staples) or fine nails spaced every 100-150mm around perimeter and at shelf board positions. Start at corners and proceed diagonally to prevent distortion.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 13 / 20

    Tip

    • Tackers cost 1500-2500 yen at home centers and are faster than nails; worthwhile for bookshelf construction.
    • Mark shelf positions on back panel with pencil before fastening to avoid missing attachment points.

    Watch out

    • Staples penetrating inside may damage books; 15mm length staples are proper for 19mm plywood.
    • Fasten only along the four back panel edges and shelf board positions to prevent panel bowing.
  14. 14

    Preparing L-shaped Bracket Installation

    ≈ 15 min

Attach four 50mm L-shaped brackets at the top rear left and right sides of the bookshelf, two per side. One side of bracket mounts to bookshelf top edge, other side designed to attach to wall. Locate wall studs in advance with a stud sensor.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 14 / 20

    Tip

    • 100-yen store stud sensors have low accuracy; home center models (1000-2000 yen) are recommended.
    • Wall studs usually have 455mm intervals; locating one gives clue to adjacent studs.

    Watch out

    • Drywall only provides no secure fastening; always screw into studs.
    • If bracket holes do not align with studs, shift brackets sideways to align screws with stud centers.
  15. 15

    Installing L-shaped Brackets on Bookshelf

    ≈ 10 min

Fix four L-brackets to the bookshelf top side external faces using 38mm coarse-thread screws through the supplied bracket holes. Ensure bracket sits flush or within 5mm of the side board surface and the bracket flange protrudes perpendicularly for wall fixing.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 15 / 20

    Tip

    • Correct bracket orientation is critical: bent portion faces wall, screw holes face bookshelf.

    Watch out

    • Brackets installed crooked cause gaps with wall during fixing; check and level carefully.
  16. 16

    Placing Bookshelf and Wall Attachment

    ≈ 20 min

Move bookshelf to installation location (two people recommended). Push tightly against wall and drive 45-50mm coarse-thread screws through bracket wall side holes into studied wall studs completing four points of attachment to prevent tipping.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 16 / 20

    Tip

    • Use 45-50mm screws for wall side, as 38mm screws are too short to reach studs.
    • Wall fixing is crucial; do not shortcut as tipping during earthquakes can cause injury or death.

    Watch out

    • Drywall anchors alone lack sufficient holding power; always fasten into studs.
    • If more than 5mm gap exists between shelf and wall, insert shim before fixing; otherwise bracket effectiveness is lost.
  17. 17

    Pre-paint Cleaning

    ≈ 10 min

Thoroughly vacuum and wipe entire bookshelf with dry cloth to remove dust, oil or fingerprints before finishing. Cleaning quality significantly affects finish. Optionally mask plywood back panel as it absorbs finish quickly.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 17 / 20

    Tip

    • Wipe in order: dry wipe, damp wipe, dry wipe for best cleanliness.

    Watch out

    • Remaining wood dust causes rough paint surfaces; check under good lighting.
  18. 18

    First Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 40 min

Brush oil stain (e.g., Watco Oil or Kinura) evenly on side board exteriors, shelf board tops, shelf board interiors, and back panel in this order. After 10-15 minutes, wipe off excess with dry cloth. The first coat absorbs heavily using approximately 60-70% of total volume.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 18 / 20

    Tip

    • Apply oil, wait 10-15 minutes, then wipe off for proper finish; leaving excess causes tackiness.
    • Use 30-50mm wide brushes suitable for bookshelf application; too large misses details.

    Watch out

    • Forgetting wiping leaves sticky surfaces for over a week.
    • Plywood back panel absorbs quickly causing unevenness; apply thinly and wipe carefully.
  19. 19

    Second Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 25 min

After at least 24 hours drying from first coat, apply second coat using one-third to one-half the first coat volume and wipe off excess similarly. Two coats deepen color and improve protection. Allow complete drying for 24-48 hours.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 19 / 20

    Tip

    • Second coat corrects color unevenness; apply evenly and thinly.
    • Add a third coat if deeper color is desired.

    Watch out

    • Do not forget wiping residue after second coat; thick areas cause unevenness.
    • Dry indoors free from dust and insects.
  20. 20

    Completion, Use Start, and Inspection

    ≈ 15 min

After full oil drying (48 hours), begin placing books starting with heavy ones on lower shelves and lighter ones on upper shelves for balance and stability. After one week in use, recheck screws and L-bracket fixings and tighten if necessary.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 20 / 20

    Tip

    • Place heavy books (encyclopedias etc.) on bottom two shelves; upper shelves for pocket or paperback lightweight books.
    • Reapplying oil every 3-5 years renews luster and protection.

    Watch out

    • Putting books on too soon transfers oil to books; drying at least 48 hours is mandatory.
    • Books absorb humidity; use dehumidifiers during rainy seasons. Bookshelf may warp with moisture.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Pre-drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
