Build steps

  1. 1

Final Check of Materials and Tools

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare 2 side boards of SPF lumber 1x10 (19×350×1800mm), 6 shelf boards (19×350×1800mm), 1 plywood back panel 4mm thick (1800×1800mm), 48 coarse-thread screws 38mm, and 4 L-brackets 50mm. Tools are electric driver, saw, measuring tape, carpenter's square, #120/#240 sandpaper, level, two F-type clamps, brush and paint tray, stapler or fine nails.

    Measure
    W 1800 mm
    MeasureSTEP 1 / 20

    Tip

    • SPF lumber tends to warp. Check each board visually at purchase and select boards with warp under 1mm.
    • L-brackets and screws are vital for 'tipping prevention.' Do not omit them.

    Watch out

    • Check each SPF board for warp, cracks, and knots before purchase. Using boards warped over 1mm will distort the shelf boards.
    • The 4mm plywood back panel is thin and prone to breakage during moving. Manage it upright immediately after cutting.
  2. 2

    Securing the Workspace

    ≈ 10 min

Secure a workspace where a bookshelf 1800mm tall can stand. Ceiling height should be 2200mm or more, and floor area around 1500×1200mm is enough. Lay a blue sheet and support long materials on two sawhorses.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 2 / 20

    Tip

    • Assembly is done while lying on the floor. Stand the bookshelf up only in the final step. Narrow rooms are still workable.

    Watch out

    • Standing the assembled bookshelf up alone is difficult. Two-person work is safer.
    • If ceiling height is under 2000mm, the bookshelf may hit the ceiling when standing up. Confirm beforehand.
  3. 3

    Creating Cut List and Cutting

    ≈ 20 min

Submit a cut list to the home center for 2 side boards (1800mm), 6 shelf boards (1800mm), and 1 back panel (1800×1800mm). If cutting yourself, support the 1800mm long lumber on two sawhorses and cut with a pull saw. Aim for cutting errors within ±2mm.

    Cut
    Use the in-store cut service
    CutSTEP 3 / 20

    Tip

    • Cutting fee is about 30-50 yen per cut. All cuts cost about 1000 yen and reduce time from 30 minutes to immediate.
    • Since all 6 shelf boards have the same size, bundle them and cut at once for best accuracy.

    Watch out

    • 19mm thick SPF lumber easily warps even with straight cutting. Use guides for straight cuts.
    • The 4mm plywood is flexible and warps if unsupported beneath during cutting.
  4. 4

Sanding All Components (#120 to #240)

    ≈ 40 min

Sand all components starting with #120 grit then finishing with #240 grit. Pay special attention to sanding the shelf bearing surfaces on the side boards, upper and lower surfaces of shelf boards, and cut ends. Rounding the shelf edges makes the bookshelf easier to handle. Vacuum completely to remove sawdust after sanding.

    Sand
    #120
    SandSTEP 4 / 20

    Tip

    • A smooth shelf surface makes it easier to put books in and out.
    • Cut ends often have raised fibers, so sand them carefully starting with #120 grit.

    Watch out

    • SPF is soft; excessive sanding alters dimensions. Use #120 mainly and #240 only for finishing.
    • Over-rounding edges results in a clumsy look. Keep edge radius about 2mm.
  5. 5

Marking Shelf Positions on Side Boards

    ≈ 15 min

Place two side boards together and mark pencil positions for fixing six shelf boards. The shelf intervals can be 300mm each from the bottom up (6 shelves totaling 1800mm) or have wider intervals on the top for decorative space. Mark both side boards simultaneously to ensure exact alignment.

    Mark a line
    Use a try square
    MarkSTEP 5 / 20

    Tip

    • Clamp two side boards together before marking to ensure identical shelf positions on both sides.
    • Use heights like A4 (297mm), A5 (210mm), and paperback size (150mm) as references for shelf spacing for easy storage.

    Watch out

    • Uneven shelf positions on left and right cause shelves to be skewed. Marking both boards together is essential.
    • Forgetting the 19mm shelf thickness in calculations narrows actual intervals.
  6. 6

    Preparing Pilot Holes

    ≈ 20 min

Drill 3mm pilot holes at the marked shelf positions. Drill from the outside of the side board toward the shelf board end grain, so holes go through the side board from outside to inside. Mark drill depth on the bit with masking tape to guide a total depth of 29mm (19mm side board plus 10mm into shelf board).

    Drill a hole
    下穴 φ3.5mm
    DrillSTEP 6 / 20

    Tip

    • A 3mm pilot hole is about 70% of the 4.2mm screw shank diameter, preventing wood splitting.
    • Each shelf requires 2 pilot holes on each side board (2 sides × 6 shelves × 2 holes = 24 holes). Thoroughly check for omissions.

    Watch out

    • Pilot holes that aren’t deep enough prevent screws from fully seating. Drill a bit deeper than needed.
    • Prevent drilling entirely through the shelf board by limiting depth with tape.
  7. 7

Temporarily Fixing Shelf Boards to One Side Board

    ≈ 20 min

Lay one side board flat on the floor and stand six shelf boards at marked positions. Temporarily clamp with F-type clamps and check the right angle between the side board and shelf boards using a carpenter’s square. Where the square cannot fit, verify visually.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 7 / 20

    Tip

    • Stand shelf boards sequentially from the bottom to improve stability.
    • Ideally, have one clamp per shelf (6 total) for easier work; otherwise, use two clamps sequentially.

    Watch out

    • Fixing with incorrect right angles will distort the entire frame into a parallelogram shape. Always check with a square.
    • If shelf boards protrude beyond the side board edges, the back panel cannot be attached later.
  8. 8

    Driving Screws on One Side

    ≈ 15 min

Drive coarse-thread screws 38mm through the pilot holes from the outside of the side board into the shelf board ends. Use two screws per attachment point for all six shelves (total 12 screws). The screw heads should be flush or recessed up to 0.5mm from the side board surface. Set the impact driver torque to medium and finish the last 1/4 turn by hand.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 8 / 20

    Tip

    • Offset the two screws vertically slightly to improve pull-out strength.
    • If screw heads are very visible, optionally fill holes later with wooden dowels.

    Watch out

    • Over-tightening screws can split the 19mm thick SPF lumber end grain. Stop at medium torque.
    • If a screw goes in angled and protrudes on the opposite side, remove it, fill with wood putty, and reinstall at another position.
  9. 9

Preparing to Attach Opposite Side Board

    ≈ 15 min

Stand the partially assembled unit upright and position the second side board on the opposite side. Align the opposite ends of the shelf boards to the marks on the second side board and clamp temporarily. Check the entire assembly for verticality and right angles.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 9 / 20

    Tip

    • This step is recommended for two-person work: one supports the unit, the other clamps for precision.
    • The marks for the second side board have been made previously; no need to remark.

    Watch out

    • Attempting this alone risks the shelves falling off and damaging the floor. Use two people or lean the unit against a wall.
  10. 10

Driving Screws on the Opposite Side

    ≈ 15 min

Drive 38mm coarse-thread screws through pilot holes on the outer side of the second side board into the shelf boards with 2 screws each at 6 shelves (12 total). This completes main structure assembly of side boards and shelf boards.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 10 / 20

    Tip

    • After fixing both sides, use a level to check all shelves are horizontal. Loosen and adjust if any shelf is tilted.

    Watch out

    • Driving screws simultaneously on both sides can cause distortion. Screw one side fully before the other.
  11. 11

    Overall Level and Diagonal Check

    ≈ 15 min

Place the assembled bookshelf on the floor and use a level to confirm all shelves are horizontal. Measure diagonal distances frontally (top left to bottom right and top right to bottom left) with measuring tape; difference should be within 5mm. If distorted, loosen clamps and adjust, then add screws for fixing.

    Check level
    Level ✓
    LevelSTEP 11 / 20

    Tip

    • A diagonal difference exceeding 5mm indicates a parallelogram distortion. Correct before attaching back panel.
    • Back panel increases rigidity; correct distortion before installing it.

    Watch out

    • Shelf bowing at the center worsens with book weight. Shelf length up to 600mm is acceptable; over 1000mm requires reinforcement.
  12. 12

    Preparing Back Panel Attachment

    ≈ 10 min

Fit the 4mm plywood back panel against the rear of the unit. Align corners and confirm back panel diagonals match the unit's diagonals. Aligning the back panel corrects final distortions. Secure lightly with masking tape.

    Build the frame
    Check for square
    AssembleSTEP 12 / 20

    Tip

    • Back panel is important to suppress distortion. Slightly skewed installation reduces rigidity.
    • 4mm plywood can be easily attached using a stapler. Use pilot holes when nailing with fine nails.

    Watch out

    • If the back panel is larger than the unit, trim protruding parts. If smaller, evenly leave a 5mm gap around edges.
  13. 13

    Stapling Back Panel

    ≈ 20 min

Attach the back panel to side and shelf boards using a stapler with 15mm staples or fine nails. Space staples every 100-150mm around the perimeter and on shelf board positions. Start stapling at corners and proceed along diagonals to minimize distortion.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 13 / 20

    Tip

    • Stapler costs about 1500-2500 yen at home centers but is faster than fine nails. Worth the investment for this project.
    • Mark shelf board positions on the back panel with pencil before stapling to avoid missing attachment points.

    Watch out

    • Staples too long may protrude inside and damage books. A 15mm staple length is appropriate for 19mm thick boards.
    • Staple only around the four edges plus shelf board locations to prevent back panel sagging.
  14. 14

    Preparing L-Bracket Attachment

    ≈ 15 min

Prepare four 50mm L-brackets to attach two each on the upper back corners of the bookshelf. One side attaches to the bookshelf top edge, the other to the wall. Use a stud finder to locate wall studs.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 14 / 20

    Tip

    • 100-yen store stud finders lack accuracy; better to buy one from a home center (1000-2000 yen).
    • Studs are usually spaced 455mm apart. Once you find one, estimate adjacent studs easily.

    Watch out

    • Drywall alone cannot hold screws securely for tipping prevention. Always fix to studs.
    • If L-bracket position does not align with studs, adjust brackets left or right so screws hit stud center.
  15. 15

    Attaching L-Brackets to Bookshelf

    ≈ 10 min

Attach four L-brackets to the bookshelf’s upper side boards' outer surfaces using 38mm coarse-thread screws into the bracket's screw holes. Fix so the bracket is flush or up to 5mm offset from the side board and protrudes perpendicularly from the wall.

    Drive screws
    コーススレッド 51mm
    ScrewSTEP 15 / 20

    Tip

    • Ensure the bracket is oriented so the bent side faces the wall and the screw holes side faces the bookshelf.

    Watch out

    • Misaligned bracket causes gaps between the bracket and wall during fixing. Check alignment with a level.
  16. 16

Setting Up Bookshelf and Wall Attachment

    ≈ 20 min

Carry the bookshelf upright to the installation location (two people recommended). Place it against the wall and drive 45-50mm coarse-thread screws through the L-brackets into the wall studs (using supplied or additional screws). Fix all four points securely to prevent tipping.

    Fix to the wall
    Anchor to studs
    Wall mountSTEP 16 / 20

    Tip

    • 38mm screws are too short for wall mounting; use 45-50mm screws that reach studs.
    • Wall attachment is the most critical step; neglecting it risks injury or death during earthquakes.

    Watch out

    • Drywall anchors alone are insufficient strength; always screw into studs.
    • If gap between wall and bookshelf is over 5mm, shim before fixing. Leaving gap reduces bracket effectiveness.
  17. 17

    Cleaning Before Painting

    ≈ 10 min

Vacuum and wipe the entire bookshelf with a dry cloth to remove all sawdust, oil, and fingerprints. Cleanliness before finishing greatly affects the result quality. Plywood back panels absorb paint quickly; optional to mask off beforehand.

    Inspect
    No wobble ✓
    InspectSTEP 17 / 20

    Tip

    • For perfect cleaning before finishing, wipe with dry cloth, then wet cloth, then dry cloth again in three steps.

    Watch out

    • Residual sawdust causes rough texture in finishing. Use a light to inspect.
  18. 18

    First Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 40 min

Apply oil stain (e.g., Watco Oil, Kinura) with a brush over all surfaces in order: side board outer surfaces, shelf board tops, shelf board undersides, then back panel. After 10-15 minutes, wipe off excess with a dry cloth. Use about 60-70% of total amount for the first coat because absorption is high.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 18 / 20

    Tip

    • Oil stain application procedure is apply, wait 10-15 minutes, then wipe off excess.
    • Brush width of 30-50mm is ideal for bookshelf work; too wide is difficult for detailed areas.

    Watch out

    • Forgetting to wipe excess causes stickiness lasting over a week. Always wipe off.
    • The plywood back panel absorbs quickly and can become uneven; apply thinly and wipe carefully.
  19. 19

    Second Coat of Oil Stain

    ≈ 25 min

After the first coat dries for 24 hours, apply a second coat using one-third to one-half the amount of the first coat. Wipe off excess again. Two coats deepen color and improve protection. Allow 24-48 hours for complete drying.

    Paint
    Watco oil / varnish
    PaintSTEP 19 / 20

    Tip

    • The second coat corrects uneven color from the first coat. Apply thin and evenly.
    • Add a third coat if a deeper color is desired.

    Watch out

    • Do not forget to wipe off excess on the second coat; thick application leads to uneven color.
    • During drying, keep indoors free from dust and insects.
  20. 20

    Completion, Usage Start, and Inspection

    ≈ 15 min

After full oil drying (48 hours), arrange books and start use. Place heavy books on the lower shelves and lighter books on the upper shelves for balance and stability. After one week, re-check screws and L-brackets and tighten if necessary.

    Done!
    Done — nice work!
    DoneSTEP 20 / 20

    Tip

    • Concentrate heavy books (encyclopedias etc.) on the bottom two shelves. Use paperback and light books on upper shelves.
    • Reapply oil every 3-5 years to restore shine and protection.

    Watch out

    • Loading books immediately post finishing may transfer oil to books; wait at least 48 hours.
    • Books absorb moisture; use a dehumidifier during rainy season. Moisture may warp shelves.

Warnings

  • ⚠️Pre-drill pilot holes before driving screws to prevent wood splitting.
